ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Many factors contribute to quality of life (QoL) in patients with schizophrenia, yet limited research examined these factors in patients in China. This cross-sectional study explores subjective QoL and its associated factors in patients. METHODS: The QoL was assessed using the Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (SQLS). Clinical symptoms were evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and seven factors were extracted. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) were used to assess depression and anxiety. Cognitive impairment was assessed using the Ascertain Dementia 8 (AD8). The Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) and Rating Scale for Extrapyramidal Side Effects (RSESE) were used to evaluate the side effects of medications. RESULTS: We recruited 270 patients (male:142,52.6%, mean age:41.9 ± 9.4 years). Positive correlations were observed between SQLS and its subdomains with the total score of BPRS, PHQ-9, GAD-7, AD8, TESS, and RSESE (all P < 0.005). Patients who were taking activating second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) had lower scores on total SQLS, Motivation/ Energy domain of SQLS (SQLS-ME) as well as Symptoms/ Side effects domain of SQLS (SQLS-SS) compared to those taking non-activating SGAs (all P < 0.005). Multiple regression analysis showed that depressive/ anxiety symptoms and cognitive impairment had significant negative effects on QoL (P ≤ 0.001), while activating SGAs had a positive effect (P < 0.005). Blunted affect and unemployment were inversely associated with the motivation/energy domain (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings emphasize the important role of depression/anxiety symptoms and cognitive impairment in the QoL of patients with chronic schizophrenia. Activating SGAs and employment may improve the QoL of these individuals. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This protocol was registered at chictr.org.cn (Identifier: ChiCTR2100043537).

ABSTRACT

Tuning the magnetic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets has special importance for their practical applications. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the magnetic properties of Co-doped Fe3GaTe2 with different Co concentrations and different Co atomic sites. Calculation results show that Fe or Co atoms with relatively lower atomic concentrations preferentially occupy Fe1 sites with interlayer coupling, which is more energetically favorable. As the doping concentration of Co atoms increases, the total magnetic moment of the doped system decreases, while the average atomic magnetic moments of Fe1 and Fe2 increase and decrease, respectively, with Fe1 reaching ∼2.08µB. The spin polarization of the doped model 2Co-2 near the Fermi energy level is significantly reduced, while 4Co-3 exhibits an enhanced trend. At some doping level, a phase change from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism appears at high Co concentration. These results provide a theoretical basis for experimental studies and valuable information for the development of Fe3GaTe2-based spintronic devices.

ABSTRACT

The reactions of NHB-stabilized disilyne (NHB)Si≡Si(NHB) (1, NHB = [ArN(CMe)2NAr]B, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with internal alkynes were described. Reaction of disilyne 1 with one equivalent of bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene led to a reversible [1 + 2] cycloaddition of one of the Si atoms with the alkyne and the insertion of the other Si into one of Ar rings with the formation of a silirenyl-silepin 2, whereas reaction of 1 with two equivalents of Me3SiCCSiMe3 resulted in the formal addition of the Csp-Si bond to the Si≡Si triple bond to give disilene (NHB)(Me3Si)Si=Si(CCSiMe3)(NHB). Reaction of 1 with 1,3-diyne Me3SiCCCCSiMe3 yielded a 1,2-disilacyclobut-3-ene via cycloaddition, ring expansion, and NHB 1,2-shift sequence. The initial [1 + 2] cycloaddition of one of the silicon atoms with an alkyne was strongly supported by DFT calculations. The results demonstrated the significant bis(silylene) character and rich synthetic potential of bis(boryl) disilyne 1.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To develop a practical method to enable 3D T1 mapping of brain metabolites. THEORY AND METHODS: Due to the high dimensionality of the imaging problem underlying metabolite T1 mapping, measurement of metabolite T1 values has been currently limited to a single voxel or slice. This work achieved 3D metabolite T1 mapping by leveraging a recent ultrafast MRSI technique called SPICE (spectroscopic imaging by exploiting spatiospectral correlation). The Ernst-angle FID MRSI data acquisition used in SPICE was extended to variable flip angles, with variable-density sparse sampling for efficient encoding of metabolite T1 information. In data processing, a novel generalized series model was used to remove water and subcutaneous lipid signals; a low-rank tensor model with prelearned subspaces was used to reconstruct the variable-flip-angle metabolite signals jointly from the noisy data. RESULTS: The proposed method was evaluated using both phantom and healthy subject data. Phantom experimental results demonstrated that high-quality 3D metabolite T1 maps could be obtained and used for correction of T1 saturation effects. In vivo experimental results showed metabolite T1 maps with a large spatial coverage of 240 × 240 × 72 mm3 and good reproducibility coefficients (< 11%) in a 14.5-min scan. The metabolite T1 times obtained ranged from 0.99 to 1.44 s in gray matter and from 1.00 to 1.35 s in white matter. CONCLUSION: We successfully demonstrated the feasibility of 3D metabolite T1 mapping within a clinically acceptable scan time. The proposed method may prove useful for both T1 mapping of brain metabolites and correcting the T1-weighting effects in quantitative metabolic imaging.

ABSTRACT

Recurrent opportunistic infections (OIs) in patients with severely immunosuppressed AIDS remain an unresolved medical challenge despite advancements in antiretroviral therapy (ART). To address this gap, we developed an HLA-mismatched allogeneic adoptive immune therapy (AAIT) specifically targeting this patient population. The safety and efficacy of this novel therapeutic approach were preliminarily confirmed in our phase 1 trial. Subsequently, a multicenter, open-label, controlled, phase 2a trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of AAIT in combination with ART compared with the conventional ART-only regimen. No difference in the incidence of adverse events (AEs) was observed between the two groups at the 96-week follow-up. AAIT treatment improved CD4+ T cell recovery at weeks 72 (P = 0.048) and 96 (P = 0.024) compared to the Control Group. Additionally, stratified analysis of patients in the AAIT Group showed that donor/recipient sex mismatch was significantly associated with the likelihood of patients achieving an immunological response (OR = 8.667; 95% CI, 2.010-37.377; P = 0.004). These findings suggest that AAIT serves as a promising adjunct therapy for improving the outcomes of patients with severely immunosuppressed AIDS. Further studies are needed to elucidate the immunological mechanisms underlying AAIT and identify the subpopulations that respond optimally to this therapeutic approach. ABSTRACT

The viewpoints on whether high concentrations of chloride ion (Cl-) promote or inhibit the oxidation activity of activated persulfates are still inconclusive. Furthermore, the degradation of organic pollutants by the persulfates in the presence of high Cl- concentrations without any activation medium has not yet been studied. In this work, the efficiency and mechanism of degradation of organic pollutants such as carbamazepine (CBZ), sulfadiazine (SDZ), and phenol (PN) by Cl--activated PMS (denoted as Cl-/PMS) were investigated. Results showed that Cl- could effectively activate PMS for the complete removal of CBZ, SDZ, and PN with reaction kinetic constants of 0.4516 min-1, 0.01753 min-1, and 0.06805 min-1, respectively. Parameters such as PMS dose, Cl- concentration, solution pH, and initial concentrations of organic pollutants that affect the degradation efficiencies of the Cl-/PMS process were optimized. Unlike conventional activated persulfates, it was confirmed that the free chlorine was the main active species in the Cl-/PMS process. Finally, the degradation by-products of CBZ and SDZ as well as their toxicity were detected, and a possible degradation pathway for CBZ and SDZ was proposed. Though higher toxic chlorinated by-products were generated, the Cl-/PMS process was still an efficient oxidation method for the removal of organic pollutants in aqueous solutions which contain high concentrations of Cl-.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the correlation between CD117 antigen and the prognosis of hematological malignancies has been demonstrated. However, there is limited literature on the clinical significance of CD117 antigen in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the clinical features and prognostic significance of CD117 in APL. METHODS: In this study, we retrospectively investigated the clinicopathological characteristics, outcome, and prognostic impact of negative CD117 expression (CD117-) in 169 APL patients treated with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO) containing regimen. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 63.0 months. CD117- was detected in 13 APL patients (7.7%). No significant differences were found in baseline characteristics between CD117+ and CD117- subgroups. However, compared to CD117+ APL, the incidence of early death (ED) was significantly higher in CD117- APL (p = 0.023). By multivariate analysis, CD117- was an independent adverse prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) (p = 0.022 and p = 0.014, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: To sum up, CD117- is associated with greater risk of ED and has the statistical power to predict inferior OS and PFS, this marker may be considered to build prognostic scores for risk-adapted therapeutic strategies in APL management.

ABSTRACT

To develop new anti-inflammatory agents with improved pharmaceutical profiles, a series of chalcone analogues were designed and synthesized. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of these compounds was evaluated by screening their inhibitory effects on NO production in RAW264.7 cell lines. The most promising compounds 3h and 3l were selected for further investigation by assessment of their dose-dependent inhibitory activity against cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 and PGE2 release. The further study also indicated that 3h and 3l could significantly suppress the expression of iNOS and COX-2 through the NF-κB/JNK signaling pathway. Furthermore, compounds 3h and 3l could also remarkably inhibit the mRNA expression of inflammation-related genes. Meanwhile, 3h could also down-regulate ROS production. Docking simulation was conducted to position compounds 3h and 3l into the iNOS binding site to predict the probable binding mode. In conclusion, this series of chalcone analogues with reasonable drug-likeness obtained via in silico rapid prediction can be used as promising lead candidates.

ABSTRACT

The spike-in plasmid method was utilized to perform an analysis on meconium and second-pass feces, yielding both relative and absolute quantitative results. With the absolute quantitative data, the abundance of bacteria in 17 meconium samples and 17 second-pass fecal samples were found to be 1.14 × 107 and 1.59 × 109 copies/g, respectively. The mode of delivery can significantly influence the alterations and compositions of gut bacteria in a newborn within 72 h.

ABSTRACT

RNAi plays a crucial role in insect gene function research and pest control field. Nonetheless, the variable efficiency of RNAi across diverse insects and off-target effects also limited its further application. In this study, we cloned six essential housekeeping genes from Solenopsis invicta and conducted RNAi experiments by orally administering dsRNA. Then, we found that mixing with liposomes significantly enhanced the RNAi efficiency by targeting for SiV-ATPaseE. Additionally, we observed a certain lethal effect of this dsRNA on queens by our established RNAi system. Furthermore, no strict sequence-related off-target effects were detected. Finally, the RNAi effect of large-scale bacteria expressing dsRNA was successfully confirmed for controlling S. invicta. In summary, this study established an RNAi system for S. invicta and provided a research template for the future development of nucleic acid drugs based on RNAi.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Parasitic helminths influence the composition of the gut microbiome. However, the microbiomes of individuals living in helminth-endemic regions are understudied. The Orang Asli, an indigenous population in Malaysia with high burdens of the helminth Trichuris trichiura, display microbiotas enriched in Clostridiales, an order of spore-forming obligate anaerobes with immunogenic properties. We previously isolated novel Clostridiales that were enriched in these individuals and found that a subset promoted the Trichuris life cycle. In this study, we aimed to further characterize the functional properties of these bacteria. RESULTS: Clostridiales isolates were profiled for their ability to perform 57 enzymatic reactions and produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and hydrogen sulfide, revealing that these bacteria were capable of a range of activities associated with metabolism and host response. Consistent with this finding, monocolonization of mice with individual isolates identified bacteria that were potent inducers of regulatory T-cell (Treg) differentiation in the colon. Comparisons between variables revealed by these studies identified enzymatic properties correlated with Treg induction and Trichuris egg hatching. CONCLUSION: We identified Clostridiales species that are sufficient to induce high levels of Tregs. We also identified a set of metabolic activities linked with Treg differentiation and Trichuris egg hatching mediated by these newly isolated bacteria. Altogether, this study provides functional insights into the microbiotas of individuals residing in a helminth-endemic region. Video Abstract.

ABSTRACT

Intronic polyadenylation (IPA) refers to a particular type of alternative polyadenylation where a gene makes use of a polyadenylation site located within its introns. Aberrant IPA events have been observed in various types of cancer. IPA can produce noncoding transcripts or truncated protein-coding transcripts with altered coding sequences in the resulting protein product. Therefore, IPA events hold the potential to act as a reservoir of tumor neoantigens. Here, we developed a computational method termed DIPAN, which incorporates IPA detection, protein fragmentation, and MHC binding prediction to predict IPA-derived neoantigens. Utilizing RNA-seq from breast cancer cell lines and ovarian cancer clinical samples, we demonstrated the significant contribution of IPA events to the neoantigen repertoire. Through mass spectrometry immunopeptidome analysis, we further illustrated the processing and presentation of IPA-derived neoantigens on the surface of cancer cells. While most IPA-derived neoantigens are sample-specific, shared neoantigens were identified in both cancer cell lines and clinical samples. Furthermore, we demonstrated an association between IPA-derived neoantigen burden and overall survival in cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the regions with the highest burdens of HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV), but data on the impact of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on HBV DNA suppression is limited. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of a positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) among people living with HIV, and assess the suppression of ART on HBV replication in people living with HIV in Sierra Leone. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was designed to recruit people living with HIV aged 18 years or older in ten public hospitals in Sierra Leone between August 2022 and January 2023. Statistical analyses were performed using R software. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess factors independently associated with positive HBsAg and HBV DNA suppression. RESULTS: Of the 3106 people living with HIV recruited in this study, 2311 (74.4%) were women. The median age was 36 years, 166 (5.3%) had serological evidence of HBV vaccination. The overall prevalence of HBsAg positivity was 12.0% (95% CI: 10.9% to 13.2%). Male sex (adjusted OR (aOR) 2.11, 95% CI: 1.67 to 2.68; p<0.001) and being separated (aOR 1.83, 95% CI: 1.06 to 3.16, p=0.031; reference group: being married) were independent predictors of HBsAg seropositivity. Among 331 people living with HIV and HBV receiving ART, 242 (73.1%) achieved HBV DNA suppression (below 20 IU/mL). HBV suppression rate was higher in HIV-virally suppressed patients than those with unsuppressed HIV viral load (p<0.001). In addition, the male sex was more likely to have unsuppressed HBV DNA (aOR 1.17, 95% CI: 1.17 to 3.21; p=0.010). CONCLUSIONS: We reported a high prevalence of HBsAg seropositivity and low HBV immunisation coverage in people living with HIV in Sierra Leone. In addition, we observed that ART can efficiently result in a viral suppression rate of HBV infection. Therefore, achieving the global target of eliminating HBV infection by 2030 requires accelerated access to care for people living with HIV and HBV, including HBV testing, antiviral treatment and hepatitis B vaccination.

Background: There is limited evidence suggesting that osteoporosis might exacerbate depressive symptoms, while more studies demonstrate that depression negatively affects bone density and increases fracture risk. Aims: To explore the relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and fracture risk. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control analysis (32 670 patients with fracture and 397 017 individuals without fracture) and a matched cohort analysis (16 496 patients with MDD and 435 492 individuals without MDD) in the same prospective UK Biobank data set. Further, we investigated the shared genetic architecture between MDD and fracture with linkage disequilibrium score regression and the MiXeR statistical tools. We used the conditional/conjunctional false discovery rate approach to identify the specific shared loci. We calculated the weighted genetic risk score for individuals in the UK Biobank and logistic regression was used to confirm the association observed in the prospective study. Results: We found that MDD was associated with a 14% increase in fracture risk (hazard ratio (HR) 1.14, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.15, p<0.001) in the nested case-control analysis, while fracture was associated with a 72% increase in MDD risk (HR 1.72, 95% CI 1.64 to 1.79, p<0.001) in the matched cohort analysis, suggesting a longitudinal and bidirectional relationship. Further, genetic summary data suggested a genetic overlap between MDD and fracture. Specifically, we identified four shared genomic loci, with the top signal (rs7554101) near SGIP1. The protein encoded by SGIP1 is involved in cannabinoid receptor type 1 signalling. We found that genetically predicted MDD was associated with a higher risk of fracture and vice versa. In addition, we found that the higher expression level of SGIP1 in the spinal cord and muscle was associated with an increased risk of fracture and MDD. Conclusions: The genetic pleiotropy between MDD and fracture highlights the bidirectional association observed in the epidemiological analysis. The shared genetic components (such as SGIP1) between the diseases suggest that modulating the endocannabinoid system could be a potential therapeutic strategy for both MDD and bone loss.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a specific subtype of cerebrovascular accident, is characterized by the extravasation of blood into the interstice between the brain and its enveloping delicate tissues. This pathophysiological phenomenon can precipitate an early brain injury (EBI), which is characterized by inflammation and neuronal death. Rutaecarpine (Rut), a flavonoid compound discovered in various plants, has been shown to have protective effects against SAH-induced cerebral insult in rodent models. In our study, we used a rodent SAH model to evaluate the effect of Rut on EBI and investigated the effect of Rut on the inflammatory response and its regulation of SIRT6 expression in vitro. We found that Rut exerts a protective effect on EBI in SAH rats, which is partly due to its ability to inhibit the inflammatory response. Notably, Rut up-regulated Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) expression, leading to an increase in H3K9 deacetylation and inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-[Formula: see text]B) transcriptional activation, thereby mediating the inflammatory response. In addition, further data showed that SIRT6 was proven to mediate the regulation of Rut on the microglial inflammatory response. These findings highlight the importance of SIRT6 in the regulation of inflammation and suggest a potential mechanism for the protective effect of Rut on EBI. In summary, Rut may have the potential to prevent and treat SAH-induced brain injury by interacting with SIRT6. Our findings may provide a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of SAH-induced EBI.

This study aims to investigate the effect of Naotaifang(NTF) on the proteins associated with microglial polarization and glial scar in the rat model of cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury(CIRI). The CIRI model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion. The 48 successfully modeled rats were randomized into model 7 d, model 14 d, NTF 7 d, and NTF 14 d groups(n=12). In addition, 12 SD rats were selected as the sham group. The NTF group was administrated with NTF suspension at 27 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1) by gavage, and the sham, model 7 d, and model 14 d groups were administrated with the same volume of normal saline every day by gavage for 7 and 14 days, respectively. After the intervention, Longa score was evaluated. The infarct volume was measured by 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride(TTC) staining. Morris water maze and open field tests were carried out to evaluate the spatial learning, memory, cognitive function, and anxiety degree of rats. Hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining was employed to observe the morphological structure and damage of the brain tissue. The immunofluorescence assay was employed to measure the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) and glial scar. Western blot was employed to determine the protein levels of GFAP, neurocan, phosphacan, CD206, arginase-1(Arg-1), interleukin(IL)-1ß, IL-6, and IL-4. Compared with the sham, model 7 d and model 14 d groups showed cerebral infarction of different degrees, severe pathological injury of cerebral cortex and hippocampus, neurological impairment, reduced spatial learning and memory, cognitive dysfunction, severe anxiety, astrocyte hyperplasia, thickening penumbra glial scar, and up-regulated protein levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, GFAP, neurocan, phosphacan, CD206, and Arg-1(P<0.01). Compared with the model group, NTF 7 d and NTF 14 d groups improved spatial learning, memory, and cognitive function, reduced anxiety, improved nerve function, reduced cerebral infarction volume, reduced astrocyte hyperplasia, thinned penumbra glial scar, down-regulated the protein levels of GFAP, neurocan, phosphacan, IL-6, and IL-1ß, and up-regulated the protein levels of IL-4, CD206, and Arg-1(P<0.05 or P<0.01). NTF exerts a neuroprotective effect on CIRI by inducing the M2 polarization of microglia, inhibiting inflammatory response, and reducing the formation of glial scar.

ABSTRACT

The discovery of key epigenetic modifications in cancer is of great significance for the study of disease biomarkers. Through the mining of epigenetic modification data relevant to cancer, some researches on epigenetic modifications are accumulating. In order to make it easier to integrate the effects of key epigenetic modifications on the related cancers, we established CancerMHL (http://www.positionprediction.cn/), which provide key DNA methylation, histone modifications and lncRNAs as well as the effect of these key epigenetic modifications on gene expression in several cancers. To facilitate data retrieval, CancerMHL offers flexible query options and filters, allowing users to access specific key epigenetic modifications according to their own needs. In addition, based on the epigenetic modification data, three online prediction tools had been offered in CancerMHL for users. CancerMHL will be a useful resource platform for further exploring novel and potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in cancer. Database URL: http://www.positionprediction.cn/.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To update recent information on contamination levels of mycotoxins in South Korea. Materials and methods: A total of 208 samples sourced from the feeds of swine farms were collected. The contamination levels of mycotoxins, which are aflatoxin (Afla), ochratoxin A (OTA), deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), fumonisin (FUM), and T-2 toxin, were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Results: The detection levels of the total samples were 78.91% for DON, 75.24% for Afla, 47.02% for ZEN, 68.31% for FUM, and 5.94% for OTA and T-2, which were not detected at all. Most of the analyzed mycotoxins showed significant high occurrences in 47.02%-78.91% of the swine feed samples. 11 of the 152 alfa-positive samples exceeded the maximum residue limit (MRL) of Afla proposed by the Korean regulation. In the analysis of mycotoxin detection levels by growth stage, ZEN was found in the nursery stage at a remarkably high concentration level (126.46 ± 63.76 ppb), exceeding the MRL of ZEN for piglets proposed by the European Commission. This mycotoxin was also found in the samples from the gestation barn (89.04 ± 46.05 ppb) and the farrowing house (105.58 ± 94.12) at a high concentration level. Afla was found in the nursery stage at a high concentration (8.00 ± 2.22 ppb), approaching the MRL (10 ppb) of Afla proposed by the Korean regulation. Conclusion: These results indicate that many swine farms in South Korea are still exposed to mycotoxin risk, and special attention and surveillance are necessary for these mycotoxin risks in swine farms.

ABSTRACT

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) can induce massive death of ischemic penumbra neurons via oxygen burst, exacerbating brain damage. Parthanatos is a form of caspase-independent cell death involving excessive activation of PARP-1, closely associated with intense oxidative stress following CIRI. 4'-O-methylbavachalcone (MeBavaC), an isoprenylated chalcone component in Fructus Psoraleae, has potential neuroprotective effects. This study primarily investigates whether MeBavaC can act on SIRT3 to alleviate parthanatos of ischemic penumbra neurons induced by CIRI. MeBavaC was oral gavaged to the middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion (MCAO/R) rats after occlusion. The effects of MeBavaC on cerebral injury were detected by the neurological deficit score and cerebral infarct volume. In vitro, PC-12 cells were subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R), and assessed cell viability and cell injury. Also, the levels of ROS, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and intracellular Ca2+ levels were detected to reflect mitochondrial function. We conducted western blotting analyses of proteins involved in parthanatos and related signaling pathways. Finally, the exact mechanism between the neuroprotection of MeBavaC and parthanatos was explored. Our results indicate that MeBavaC reduces the cerebral infarct volume and neurological deficit scores in MCAO/R rats, and inhibits the decreased viability of PC-12 cells induced by OGD/R. MeBavaC also downregulates the expression of parthanatos-related death proteins PARP-1, PAR, and AIF. However, this inhibitory effect is weakened after the use of a SIRT3 inhibitor. In conclusion, the protective effect of MeBavaC against CIRI may be achieved by inhibiting parthanatos of ischemic penumbra neurons through the SIRT3-PARP-1 axis.

ABSTRACT

Nanomaterials possess unusual physicochemical properties including unique optical, magnetic, electronic properties, and large surface-to-volume ratio. However, nanomaterials face some challenges when they were applied in the field of biomedicine. For example, some nanomaterials suffer from the limitations such as poor selectivity and biocompatibility, low stability, and solubility. To address the above-mentioned obstacles, functional nucleic acid has been widely served as a powerful and versatile ligand for modifying nanomaterials because of their unique characteristics, such as ease of modification, excellent biocompatibility, high stability, predictable intermolecular interaction and recognition ability. The functionally integrating functional nucleic acid with nanomaterials has produced various kinds of nanocomposites and recent advances in applications of functional nucleic acid decorated nanomaterials for cancer imaging and therapy were summarized in this review. Further, we offer an insight into the future challenges and perspectives of functional nucleic acid decorated nanomaterials.
