ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Current evidence supports the benefits of cochlear implants (CIs) in children with hearing loss, including those with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). However, there is limited evidence regarding factors that hold predictive value for intervention outcomes. DESIGN: This retrospective case-control study consisted of 66 children with CIs, including 22 with ANSD and 44 with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) matched on sex, age, age at CI activation, and the length of follow-up with CIs (1:2 ratio). The case and control groups were compared in the results of five open-set speech perception tests, and a Forward Linear Regression Model was used to identify factors that can predict the post-CI outcomes. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in average scores between the two groups across five outcome measures, ranging from 88.40% to 95.65%. The correlation matrix revealed that younger ages at hearing aid fitting and CI activation positively influenced improvements in speech perception test scores. Furthermore, among the variables incorporated in the regression model, the duration of follow-up with CIs, age at CI activation, and the utilization of two CIs demonstrated prognostic significance for improved post-CI speech perception outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Children with ANSD can achieve similar open-set speech perception outcomes as children with SNHL. A longer CI follow-up, a lower age at CI activation, and the use of two CIs are predictive for optimal CI outcome.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study examined the proportion of Iranian children who met the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years. Additionally, it investigated the feasibility and acceptability of the methods to be used in the SUNRISE study. METHODS: This pilot study was conducted among 83 children aged 3 and 4 years in preschools and health care centres in Iran, in 2022. Physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep (ActiGraph wGT3x-BT); fine and gross motor skills (validated activities); and executive functions (the Early Years Toolbox) were assessed. RESULTS: Only four (4.8%) children met all recommendations of the WHO guidelines. The proportion of children who met MVPA, TPA, screen time, restrained sitting and sleep were 44.6%, 38.6%, 19.3%, 38.6% and 65.1%, respectively. Fifty-two (62.6%) children wore the ActiGraph for at least three full days. A total of 97.6%, 95.1% and 91.5% of children completed anthropometric, EF and motor skill assessments, respectively. CONCLUSION: This pilot study was feasible and acceptable among Iranian children. Regarding the low proportion of children who met the WHO guidelines, it is recommended that long-term and practical strategies be developed to promote healthier lifestyles among preschool children in Iran.

ABSTRACT

Medical image segmentation is a critical task in computer vision because of facilitating precise identification of regions of interest in medical images. This task plays an important role in disease diagnosis and treatment planning. In recent years, deep learning algorithms have exhibited remarkable performance in this domain. However, it is important to note that there are still unresolved issues, including challenges related to class imbalance and achieving higher levels of accuracy. Considering the challenges, we propose a novel approach to the semantic segmentation of medical images. In this study, a new sampling method to handle class imbalance in the medical datasets is proposed that ensures a comprehensive understanding of both abnormal tissues and background characteristics. Additionally, we propose a novel loss function inspired by exponential loss, which operates at the pixel level. To enhance segmentation performance further, we present an ensemble model comprising two UNet models with ResNet backbone. The initial model is trained on the primary dataset, while the second model is trained on the dataset obtained through our sampling method. The predictions of both models are combined using an ensemble model. We have assessed the effectiveness of our approach using three publicly available datasets: Kvasir-SEG, FLAIR MRI Low-Grade Glioma (LGG), and ISIC 2018 datasets. In our evaluation, we have compared the performance of our loss function against four different loss functions. Furthermore, we have showcased the excellence of our approach by comparing it with various state-of-the-art methods.

ABSTRACT

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is deadly anaplastic changes in the gastrointestinal tract with high-rate mortality. In recent years, the application of phytocompounds has been extended along with different therapeutic protocols. Here, we monitored the effects of Thymoquinone (TQ) on autophagy via mitochondrial function after modulation of the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway.Human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells were treated with TQ (60 µM) and 15 µM Wnt3a inhibitor (LGK974) for 48 h. The survival rate was evaluated using an MTT assay. The expression of Wnt-related factors (c-Myc, and Axin), angiogenesis (VE-Cadherin), and mitophagy-related factors (PINK1, OPTN) was assessed using real-time PCR assay. Protein levels of autophagy factors (Beclin-1, LC3, and P62) were monitored using western blotting. Using flow cytometry analysis, the intracellular accumulation of Rhodamine 123 was evaluated. The migration properties were analyzed using a scratch wound healing assay.Data indicated that TQ can reduce the viability of HT-29 cells compared to the control cells (p < 0.05). The expression of VE-Cadherin was inhibited while the expression of PINK1 was induced in treated cells (p < 0.05). Both LGK974 and TQ-treated cells exhibited activation of autophagy flux (Beclin-1↑, LC3II/I↑, and p62↓) compared to the control group (p < 0.05). TQ can increase intracellular accumulation of Rhodamine 123, indicating the inhibition of efflux mechanisms in cancer cells. Along with these changes, the migration of cells was also reduced (p < 0.05).TQ is a potential phytocompound to alter the dynamic growth of human colorectal HT-29 cells via the modulation of autophagy, and mitophagy-related mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Eradication of endodontic biofilms from the infected root canal system is still the main concern in endodontics. In this study, the role of the power density parameter in the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) with toluidine blue O (TBO) and phycocyanin (PC) activated by a 635 nm diode laser (DL) against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm in the root canal model was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The E. faecalis biofilm in the root canal was treated with TBO and PC with different power densities (636, 954, 1273, and 1592 W/cm2). The untreated biofilm represented the control group. After the treatments, the biofilms were analyzed based on the number of colonies per milliliter. RESULTS: TBO and PC activated with 635 nm DL with a power density of 1592 W/cm2 were more efficient in removing E. faecalis biofilms within the root canals than those with a power density of 636 W/cm2 (p = 0.00). CONCLUSION: The light power density optimized the bacterial reduction of E. faecalis biofilms in the root canal spaces. These results provide information on the decisive parameters for performing PDT on intracanal biofilms.

ABSTRACT

Auditory deprivation following congenital/pre-lingual deafness (C/PD) can drastically affect brain development and its functional organisation. This systematic review intends to extend current knowledge of the impact of C/PD and deafness duration on brain resting-state networks (RSNs), review changes in RSNs and spoken language outcomes post-cochlear implant (CI) and draw conclusions for future research. The systematic literature search followed the PRISMA guideline. Two independent reviewers searched four electronic databases using combined keywords: 'auditory deprivation', 'congenital/prelingual deafness', 'resting-state functional connectivity' (RSFC), 'resting-state fMRI' and 'cochlear implant'. Seventeen studies (16 cross-sectional and one longitudinal) met the inclusion criteria. Using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool, the publications' quality was rated between 65.0% and 92.5% (mean: 84.10%), ≥80% in 13 out of 17 studies. A few studies were deficient in sampling and/or ethical considerations. According to the findings, early auditory deprivation results in enhanced RSFC between the auditory network and brain networks involved in non-verbal communication, and high levels of spontaneous neural activity in the auditory cortex before CI are evidence of occupied auditory cortical areas with other sensory modalities (cross-modal plasticity) and sub-optimal CI outcomes. Overall, current evidence supports the idea that moreover intramodal and cross-modal plasticity, the entire brain adaptation following auditory deprivation contributes to spoken language development and compensatory behaviours.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to evaluate the impacts of lavender and metformin on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. METHODS: We performed a randomized, double-blind clinical trial including 68 females aged 18 to 45, fulfilling the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS. The patients were randomized to receive lavender (250 mg twice daily) or metformin (500 mg three times a day) for 90 days. The serum progesterone was measured at baseline and after 90 days, one week before their expected menstruation. Moreover, the length of the menstrual cycle was documented. RESULTS: Our results showed that lavender and metformin treatment notably increased the progesterone levels in PCOS patients (increasing from 0.35 (0.66) and 0.8 (0.69) to 2.5 (6.2) and 2.74 (6.27) ng/mL, respectively, P < 0.001). However, we found no significant differences between the increasing effects of both treatments on progesterone levels. In addition, all patients in the lavender or metformin groups had baseline progesterone levels <3 ng/mL, reaching 14 (45.2%) patients >3 ng/mL. Lavender and metformin remarkably attenuated the menstrual cycle length in PCOS patients (decreasing from 56.0 (20.0) and 60 (12.0) to 42.0 (5.0) and 50.0 (14.0) days, respectively, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the decreasing effects of lavender on the menstrual cycle length were greater than the metformin group; however, it was not statistically significant (P = 0.06). CONCLUSION: Lavender effectively increased progesterone levels and regulated the menstrual cycles in PCOS patients, similar to metformin. Therefore, lavender may be a promising candidate for the treatment of PCOS.

ABSTRACT

Amniotic membrane (AM), the innermost layer of the placenta, is an exceptionally effective biomaterial with divers applications in clinical medicine. It possesses various biological functions, including scar reduction, anti-inflammatory properties, support for epithelialization, as well as anti-microbial, anti-fibrotic and angio-modulatory effects. Furthermore, its abundant availability, cost-effectiveness, and ethical acceptability make it a compelling biomaterial in the field of medicine. Given the potential unavailability of fresh tissue when needed, the preservation of AM is crucial to ensure a readily accessible and continuous supply for clinical use. However, preserving the properties of AM presents a significant challenge. Therefore, the establishment of standardized protocols for the collection and preservation of AM is vital to ensure optimal tissue quality and enhance patient safety. Various preservation methods, such as cryopreservation, lyophilization, and air-drying, have been employed over the years. However, identifying a preservation method that effectively safeguards AM properties remains an ongoing endeavor. This article aims to review and discuss different sterilization and preservation procedures for AM, as well as their impacts on its histological, physical, and biochemical characteristics.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the fracture resistance of mandibular first molars after preparation with 3 different access cavity designs and 2 rotary systems using finite element analysis. METHODS: Six 3-dimensionally printed mandibular first molars simulating natural teeth received traditional, conservative, and ultraconservative (truss) access cavity preparations. The root canals in each group were instrumented with either XP-Endo Shaper (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) or TruNatomy (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) rotary files. The models were individually digitized, and micro-computed tomographic scans were transferred to Mimics software (Materialise NV, Leuven, Belgium) to create a geometric model of the tooth. The designed model was exported to 3-matic software (Materialise NV), and STL files were transferred to Geomagic Design X (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC). Point cloud data were used for surfacing and transferred to ANSYS software (Ansys, Canonsburg, PA). A 200-N superficial force was applied vertically to the buccal cusps and central fossa, and the maximum and minimum equivalent von Mises stress values were calculated and reported. RESULTS: The traditional and ultraconservative access cavity designs yielded the highest and the lowest von Mises stress values, respectively. In the ultraconservative cavity design, the stress values in pericervical dentin were lower in canal preparation with TruNatomy compared with XP-Endo Shaper. In the traditional and conservative cavity designs, stress was lower in the first 2 mm from the cementoenamel junction in the XP-Endo Shaper group and in the next 3 mm in the TruNatomy group. CONCLUSIONS: Stress was lower in the ultraconservative and conservative cavity designs compared with the traditional design. Also, root canal preparation with TruNatomy yielded lower stress values in general compared with XP-Endo Shaper.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The objective of this overview of systematic reviews (SRs; umbrella review) was to systematically summarize and critically appraise current evidence of cochlear implant (CI) outcomes in children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). METHOD: This study was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement. The methodological quality and the risk of bias in the included SRs were assessed using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews 2 checklist and the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews tool, respectively. RESULTS: According to eight included SRs, children with ANSD achieve CI outcomes (speech perception performance) similar to their peers with sensorineural hearing loss. In children with postsynaptic ANSD (cochlear nerve deficiency), cochlear nerve hypoplasia is associated with better speech recognition outcomes compared with cochlear nerve aplasia, especially in the absence of additional disabilities. Except for one study, the overall quality of the included SRs was critically low, and except for three studies, evidence of a high risk of bias was identified in other included SRs. CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence supports CI benefits for children with ANSD. To improve the quality of evidence, well-designed, prospective studies with appropriate sample sizes, using valid outcome measures, clarifying matching criteria, and taking into account the role of confounding factors are essential.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with cerebral plaques and tangles, reduced synapse number, and shrinkage in several brain areas and these morphological effects are associated with the onset of compromised cognitive, motor, and anxiety-like behaviours. The appearance of both anatomical and behavioural symptoms is worsened by stress. The focus of this study was to examine the effect of neonatal tactile stimulation on AD-like behavioural and neurological symptoms on APP NL-G-F/NL-G-F mice, a mouse model of AD, who have been gestationally stressed. Our findings indicate that neonatal tactile stimulation improves cognition, motor skills, and anxiety-like symptoms in both gestationally stressed and non-stressed adult APP mice and that these alterations are associated with reduced Aß plaque formation. Thus, tactile stimulation appears to be a promising non-invasive preventative strategy for slowing the onset of dementia in aging animals.

ABSTRACT

Orthokeratinized Odontogenic Cyst (OOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst, which is important because it has a low recurrence potential, but it has a percentage of the potential for malignant changes. OOC characteristics can be different from OKC (odontogenic keratocyst), which was once classified in its category. The microscopic view of OOC cyst is the reason for its easy identification from OKC, the orthokeratinized epithelial covering and the clear granular layer, and the hyperplasia of the basal layer, and the smooth surface of this cyst. OOC cyst treatment is conservative and can be usually carried out by enucleation. In terms of gender predominance, it is often reported in men. Furthermore, OOC is more common in the 3rd and 4th decades of life. Hereby, we report a rare case of OOC in the posterior mandible of a young adult 18-year-old boy and its treatment method. The clinical and diagnostic points of view and the treatment options were discussed in this article.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second leading cause of death in adults worldwide. There are remarkable geographical variations in the accessibility to emergency medical services (EMS). Moreover, transport delays have been documented to affect stroke outcomes. This study aimed to examine the spatial variations in in-hospital mortality among patients with symptoms of stroke transferred by EMS, and determine its related factors using the auto-logistic regression model. METHODS: In this historical cohort study, we included patients with symptoms of stroke transferred to Ghaem Hospital of Mashhad, as the referral center for stroke patients, from April 2018 to March 2019. The auto-logistic regression model was applied to examine the possible geographical variations of in-hospital mortality and its related factors. All analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, v. 16) and R 4.0.0 software at the significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: In this study, a total of 1,170 patients with stroke symptoms were included. The overall mortality rate in the hospital was 14.2% and there was an uneven geographical distribution. The results of auto-logistic regression model showed that in-hospital stroke mortality was associated with age (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01-1.04), accessibility rate of ambulance vehicle (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.94-0.99), final stroke diagnosis (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.07-2.39), triage level (OR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.31-3.54), and length of stay (LOS) in hospital (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01-1.04). CONCLUSION: Our results showed considerable geographical variations in the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality in Mashhad neighborhoods. Also, the age- and sex-adjusted results highlighted the direct association between such variables as accessibility rate of an ambulance, screening time, and LOS in hospital with in-hospital stroke mortality. Thus, the prognosis of in-hospital stroke mortality could be improved by reducing delay time and increasing the EMS access rate.

Current evidence supports the link between hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, few studies report the hearing status of AD mice compared to wild-type mice. This study aimed to compare hearing thresholds and short-term memory (STM) performance of an AD (APPNL-G-F) mouse model of amyloid-beta (Aꞵ) pathology with C57BL/6 J and CBA/CaJ mice across age. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) test, using click and five tone-burst (TB) stimuli, was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. The novel object recognition (NOR) test, a measure of STM, was conducted at 6 and 12 months. While hearing thresholds were almost preserved in CBA/CaJ mice, they were not recorded at high frequencies with age in C57BL/6 J and AD mice, leading to island hearing (severe to profound hearing loss) at 9 and 12 months. AD mice showed increased hearing thresholds in TB8 and TB16 kHz at 6 and 9 months compared to C57BL/6 J mice. NOR findings were evidence of impaired STM in both C57BL/6 J and AD mice relative to CBA/CaJ mice, and a relationship was found between hearing thresholds and NOR measures in three groups. The findings were in support of the link between the degree of hearing loss and impaired STM.

ABSTRACT

In this project, a three-dimensional graphene oxide coated agarose/chitosan (ACGO) porous film was synthesized and utilized as sorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) technique to extract 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as the model analytes in various real samples such as agricultural waste water, honey and tea samples. In addition, deep eutectic solvent made of tetra ethyl ammonium chloride/chlorine chloride was used as a desorption solvent. The effect of various variables, such as: extraction time, stirring rate, solvent desorption volume, desorption time, ionic strength and solution pH on the extraction efficiency of the method was studied and optimized. Under the optimized condition, the linear range of the method was obtained in the range of 0.1-500µgL-1 for testing analytes (4-chloropheol=0.1-500µgL-1, 2,4-dichlorophenol=0.2-500µgL-1, 3,5-dichlorophenol=0.5-500µgL-1 and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol=0.2-500µgL-1). The obtained correlation coefficients (r2) were between 0.9984 and 0.9994. The limits of detection (LODs) were also calculated between 0.03 - 0.13µgL-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were obtained in the range of 2.8 to 5.9%. The enrichment factor (EFs) values for the studied analytes were also obtained in the range of 33.4-35.8. In addition, the obtained results indicated that the prepared film can potentially be used for more applications in the field of environment, food safety, and drug analysis.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Human amniotic membrane (hAM) and its cells have been proposed for several clinical applications, including cancer therapy. However, reports on the anticancer effects of human amniotic epithelial stem cells-conditioned media (hAECs-CM) are limited. This work aims to evaluate the anticancer effects of hAECs-CM on cervical cancer and breast cancer cell lines in vitro. METHODS: Human term placentas were gained from uncomplicated Cesarean sections from healthy donor women. After amnion peeling from the chorion, its epithelial stem cells were isolated and cultured, and its conditioned medium (CM) was collected for experiments. MTT assay was performed to assess cancer cells viability. Migration rate of cancer cells was examined via wound healing assay. Cell-cycle distribution and apoptosis were determined using flow cytometry. RESULTS: Based on MTT assay hAECs-CM was cytotoxic against cancerous cell lines in a dose-time-dependent manner. After 48 h of treatment with hAECs-CM pure, the cell viability of breast cancer cells includes MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 reached to 73.2% and 65.5%, respectively. In the same situation, HeLa cervical cancer cell line revealed the lowest viability by 47.3%. The wound-healing assay displayed an incomplete wound closure of scratched MDA-MB-231 cells and significant inhibition of cell migration after hAECs-CM treatment. The results also revealed that hAECs-CM exerted anti-proliferation activity by prompting cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of cancer cells.Conclusions: hAECs-CM is a potent candidate for inducing apoptosis and simultaneously inhibition of the proliferation and migration of cancer cells via inhibiting cell cycle blockade.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the largest health crises in the world. There are limited pharmaceutical interventions to treat AD, however, and most of the treatment options are not for cure or prevention, but rather to slow down the progression of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of tactile stimulation (TS) on AD-like symptoms and pathology in APPNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice, a mouse model of AD. The results show that TS reduces the AD-like symptoms on tests of cognition, motor, and anxiety-like behaviors and these improvements in behavior are associated with reduced AD pathology in APP mice. Thus, TS appears to be a promising noninvasive strategy for slowing the onset of dementia in aging animals.

ABSTRACT

Herein, polydopamine-coated Fe3 O4 spheres were synthesized using a very simple, easy, cost-effective, efficient, and fast method. First, magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3 O4 ) were synthesized and were followed by accommodating polydopamine on the surface of the prepared Fe3 O4 . The prepared polydopamine-coated Fe3 O4 spheres were utilized as a sorbent in magnetic solid phase extraction of gemfibrozil and warfarin (as the model analytes). The extracted model analytes were desorbed by a suitable organic solvent and were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Under optimized condition, the linearity of the method was in the range of 0.1-200.0 µg/L for the selected analytes in water. The limits of detection were calculated to be in the range of 0.026-0.055 µg/L for warfarin and gemfibrozil, respectively. The limits of quantification were calculated to be in the range of 0.089-0.185 µg/L. The inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviations were determined to be in the range of 1.4%-3.3% in three concentrations in order to calculate the method precision. Furthermore, the enrichment factors were found to be 78 and 81 for warfarin and gemfibrozil, respectively. Moreover, the calculated absolute recoveries were between 78% and 81%. The obtained recoveries indicated that the method was useful and applicable in complicated real samples.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in the quality and delivery of specialized stroke care, there still persist remarkable spatial variations in emergency medical services (EMS) transport delays, stroke incidence, and its outcomes. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the possible geographical variations of in-hospital stroke mortality and to identify its associated factors. METHODS: This historical cohort study included suspected stroke cases transferred to Ghaem Hospital of Mashhad by the EMS from March 2018 to March 2019. Using emergency mission IDs, the pre-hospital emergency data were integrated with the patient medical records in the hospital. We used the Bayesian approach for estimating the model parameters. RESULTS: Out of 301 patients (142 (47.2%) females vs. 159 (52.8%) males) with a final diagnosis of stroke, 61 (20.3%) cases had in-hospital mortality. Results from Bayesian spatial log-logistic proportional odds (PO) model showed that age (PO=1.07), access rate to EMS (PO=0.78), arrival time (evening shift vs. day shift, PO=0.09), and sequelae variables (PO=9.20) had a significant association with the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality (P<0.05). Furthermore, the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality were higher in central urban areas compared to suburban areas. CONCLUSION: Marked regional variations were found in the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality in Mashhad. There was a direct association between age and odds of in-hospital stroke mortality. Hence, the prognosis of in-hospital stroke mortality could be improved by better control of hypertension, prevention of the occurrence of sequelae, increasing the access rate to EMS, and optimizing shift work schedule.

Objectives: Although various studies have revealed the beneficial effects of crocin (derived from saffron), such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antioxidant, and immune modulator, however, its exact mechanism is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of crocin on the expression ratio of T-bet/GATA-3 as an indicator of altered immune responses in the lung tissue of ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice. In addition, the effect of crocin on the expression level of miR-146a and miR-106a in the lung tissue OVA-sensitized mice was investigated. Materials and Methods: Mice were randomly divided into five groups (n=6): Control; OVA, OVA + Crocin 25, OVA + Cro 50, and OVA + Cro100 groups. Crocin was administrated intraperitoneally at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg for five consecutive days. One day after asthma induction, animals were euthanized, and lungs were sampled for pathological and gene expression analysis. Results: OVA-sensitization led to increased inflammation and histopathological changes in the lung tissue of mice. In addition, GATA-3 expression increased (P<0.001) and T-bet expression decreased (P<0.001) in OVA-sensitized groups. The T-bet/GATA3 ratio was also reduced markedly in asthma groups (P<0.001). Furthermore, increased expression of miR-146a and miR-106a levels was evident in the lung tissue of OVA-sensitized mice (P<0.001 for both). Intervention with high concentrations of crocin (50 and 100 mg/kg) significantly reduced airway inflammation, GATA-3 expression, miR-146a expression, and miR-106a expression and corrected the T-bet/GATA-3 ratio (P<0.05 to P<0.001). Conclusion: Treatment with crocin led to a decrease in the severity of lung inflammation in OVA-sensitized mice, which is probably through the reduction of the T-bet/GATA-3 ratio, and mir-146a and mir-106a expression level.
