ABSTRACT

A dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst occurring most commonly in the third molar region of mandible and maxilla and maxillary canine region followed by mandibular premolar areas. However, dentigerous cyst occurring in association with impacted maxillary premolars is a very rare presentation accounting for less than 0.5% of total dentigerous cyst cases. In the following case report, a dentigerous cyst was reported in maxillary premolar region in a nonsyndromic patient having one missing premolar and another malformed one associated with the dentigerous cyst. ABSTRACT

Cadherins are a family of transmembranous glycoproteins responsible for calcium-dependent intercellular adhesion. Absence or loss of function of E-cadherin leads to the disappearance of epithelial characteristics of the cells and generates higher invasiveness for extracellular matrices. That is why cadherin expression is considered to be a decisive indicator for differentiation, aggressive behaviour, high proliferation, metastasis, poor prognosis and invasiveness of human carcinoma cells. In this review, the role of cadherin expression was focused on, both in development and carcinogenesis, paying particular attention to mechanisms involved in its down-regulation. The elements common to this process in both physiological and pathological situations was analysed, particularly in relation to one of the most common malignancy, oral squamous cell carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To study the accessibility of chair side blood glucose non-invasive screening method for diabetes mellitus during routine periodontal examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen non-diabetics and 15 newly onset type 2 diabetics patients with moderate to severe periodontitis were selected after meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. Periodontal pocket probing was performed using a Williams Graduated periodontal probe. Blood oozing from gingival sulcus of anterior teeth following periodontal pocket probing was collected with stick of a glucose self-monitoring device. As control, finger stick capillary blood was taken. RESULTS: A statistically significant correlation was observed between the blood glucose level of gingival crevicular blood (GCB) and peripheral fasting blood (PFB) of diabetic subjects. The mean GCB glucose level of the subjects in diabetic group was 172.27 ± 5.02 mg/dl while mean PFB glucose was 167.80 ± 8.87 mg/dl. The correlation coefficient of diabetic and non-diabetic subjects were r = +0.715 and r = +0.619, respectively. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that blood oozing during routine periodontal examination may be used for diabetic mellitus screening in a dental office setting without the need for any extra procedure.

ABSTRACT

Menopause is a normal developmental stage in a woman's life, marking the permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from irreversible changes in the hormonal and reproductive functions of the ovaries and is associated with a large number of symptoms ranging from physical to psychological. Some of the common oral manifestations are oral burning sensation with associated mucosal infections, pain, altered taste perception, and alveolar bone loss. These symptoms may unfavorably affect oral health and treatment needs requiring dentists to devise newer methods that would add along to the treatment modalities advised by gynecologists in relieving menopausal women from above symptoms. The present case report describes an innovative method of fabricating a metal base denture in an edentulous female that would help perimenopausal/menopausal/post-menopausal edentulous women feel hot/cold sensations of food/liquids, thereby giving them relief from pain, better taste perception, and relief from associated allergic and candidal infections that are common with conventional acrylic base dentures.

ABSTRACT

Retained primary teeth is a well-known process but multiple retained primary, permanent, and supernumerary teeth that too in an asymptomatic, non-syndromic patient is a rare possibility that has rarely been reported in literature. This case report discusses the clinical and radiographic details along with treatment options in a 21-year-old patient having a total number of 50 teeth, i.e., 16 retained primary teeth, 32 permanent teeth, and 2 supernumerary teeth without being associated with any known syndrome complex or metabolic disorder.

ABSTRACT

Growth hormone is of vital importance for normal growth and development. Individuals with growth hormone deficiency develop pituitary dwarfism with disproportionate delayed growth of skull and facial skeleton giving them a small facial appearance for their age. Both hyper and hypopituitarism have a marked effect on development of oro-facial structures including eruption and shedding patterns of teeth, thus giving an opportunity to treating dental professionals to first see the signs and symptoms of these growth disorders and correctly diagnose the serious underlying disease.

ABSTRACT

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia (SOD) is a rare developmental disorder of the maxilla, characterized by variability of its clinical and radiological features and may mimic other fibro-osseous lesions. Clinically, the disorder is often diagnosed in early childhood due to a unilateral buccolingual expansion of the posterior alveolar process, gingival enlargement, absence of one or both premolars in the affected region, delayed eruption of the adjacent teeth, and malformations of the primary molars. We describe a rare case of a SOD in a 19-year-old female comprising findings similar to earlier reports, but for the first time SOD is reported along midline. She presented with pre-maxillary enlargement and abnormal pattern of eruption of anterior maxillary permanent teeth. Radiographic imaging showed abnormal bony trabeculation. Histopathologic findings showed characteristic features of SOD. We herein report a case of this rare unusual anomaly and review the literature. Clinicians should be aware of its presence when encountering patients presenting with facial asymmetry unresponsive to treatment.

ABSTRACT

Pathology is a science, which deals with the scientific study of structure and function of the body in disease. It involves both macroscopic and microscopic study of the tissue correlating it with the clinical and radiographic history, thus helping to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Proper history and clinical description of the excised specimen has to be conveyed to the pathologist. More than proper surgical technique is required to facilitate the proper diagnosis of an oral biopsy specimen. The proper preparation of the tissue for microscopic analysis depends on steps taken by the surgeon, assistant, and histotechnician to reduce the inclusion of artifacts. This article particularly deals with various requirements for proper handling and transportation of specimens, important things which are to be communicated to pathologists, and various methods used to preserve the tissue for use in latest techniques.
