ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS- CoV-2) causing a human pandemic disease named COVID-19 has become a major global health concern. Iran as one of the most affected countries needs unprecedented effort for monitoring and evaluation of COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalance of COVID-19 in Semnan province North-East of Iran. METHODS: Six hundred people were randomly selected using the "SIB data-base". From 1 to 30 June, 2020, 153 participants of Semnan population were enrolled. Blood, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal samples were obtained. Prevalence of IgM and IgG antibodies were ascertained using ELISA and Real-Time PCR was conducted to evaluate viral load. Estimates of prevalence were standardized by age and sex, based on the 2015 national census of Semnan province. RESULTS: Seroprevalence showed no difference between females and males and no significant association between age and seropositivity. Among total participants, the age and sex adjusted prevalence of SARS-CoV2 infection was 19.3% (95% CI, 14.0-26.7 per 100 persons). Approximately 10% of participants had detectable antibodies but showed a negative-PCR result. However, approximately 80% of participants did not show an evidence of infection. CONCLUSION: The majority of the population in Semnan province has no detectable antibodies to SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, Semnan is considered a SARS-CoV-2 susceptible area. These results emphasize the need for maintaining public health measures to tackle the new epidemic wave.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Understanding local perceptions of mental health in different cultures and contexts is crucial for designing and implementing appropriate mental healthcare services. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted to investigate local perceptions of mental health in two highly populated provincial districts in Iran. Data were collected using the free list technique and interviews. A two-phase training workshop was held with the research team at a local health center, followed by a pilot study with the participation of six subjects. All the interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and then analyzed by the third and fourth authors in DEDOOSE. RESULTS: A total of 30 individuals (20 in the free list and 10 as key informants in the interviews) took part in the study. Based on the study findings and the key informants' ideas, mental health problems were categorized into three categories of depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). CONCLUSIONS: Mental health problems appear to be expressed in different ways and with different symptoms in different cultures, and there is a distinct need for examining mental disorders in each culture and nationality separately using culturally appropriate tools for disease screening.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as "a state of well-being in which every individual realizes own potential, can cope with the normal pressures of life, is able to work effectively, and can make a contribution to community". OBJECTIVES: Mental Health Problems (MHP) is a great concern for all societies in terms of its burden and impact. This survey screened MHP and its impact in an Iranian urban population aged 6 - 12 years old, and explored its associated socio-familial factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The survey was conducted in the elementary schools of Semnan, using random cluster sampling. Collection and analysis of data was performed using the parent version of the "Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)" and survey commands of Stata-nine, taking into account cluster effect and population weights. Associations were assessed by fitting simple and multiple logistic regression models. P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: With regard to the SDQ total score, 19.3% (95% CI: 8.6, 30.1) scored above the normal threshold (9.6% abnormal, 9.7% borderline). The frequency of problems ranged between 16.1% (peer problems) and 8.4% (emotional symptoms), and in all subscales boys were affected more than girls. The impact score was abnormal in 68.4% of all children, and was greater in girls than in boys. "A previously diagnosed mental health disorder" (OR = 11.11, 95% CI: 5.55, 25.00), "male gender" (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.10, 1.87 and "less time spent with the child by father" (OR = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.20, 2.17) were significantly associated with an abnormal SDQ. CONCLUSIONS: The high rate of MHP in 6 - 12 year-old children and the lack of any significant correlation with their age, underpins the importance of early screening for MHP in schools, with particular focus on high risk groups.
