ABSTRACT

Parosteal lipoma is a rare tumor that occurs very close to the bone, and accounts for approximately 0.3% of all lipomas. Chondrolipoma, a lipoma with cartilaginous metaplasia, is also a rare tumor consisting of mature adipose and cartilage tissues. Therefore, a tumor with characteristics of both parosteal lipoma and chondrolipoma simultaneously is extremely rare. Herein, we report the imaging findings of a parosteal chondrolipoma arising in the right periscapular area, confirmed based on surgical resection and histopathologic examination.

BACKGROUND: With recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, the practical role of lung MRI is expanding despite the inherent challenges of the thorax. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the current status of the concurrent dephasing and excitation (CODE) ultrashort echo-time sequence and the T1-weighted volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) sequence in the evaluation of thoracic disease by comparing it with the gold standard computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Twenty-four patients with lung cancer and mediastinal masses underwent both CT and MRI including T1-weighted VIBE and CODE. For CODE images, data were acquired in free breathing and end-expiratory images were reconstructed using retrospective respiratory gating. All images were evaluated through qualitative and quantitative approaches regarding various anatomical structures and lesions (nodule, mediastinal mass, emphysema, reticulation, honeycombing, bronchiectasis, pleural plaque and lymphadenopathy) inside the thorax in terms of diagnostic performance in making specific decisions. RESULTS: Depiction of the lung parenchyma, mediastinal and pleural lesion was not significant different among the three modalities (p > 0.05). Intra-tumoral and peritumoral features of lung nodules were not significant different in the CT, VIBE or CODE images (p > 0.05). However, VIBE and CODE had significantly lower image quality and poorer depiction of airway, great vessels, and emphysema compared to CT (p < 0.05). Image quality of central airways and depiction of bronchi were significantly better in CODE than in VIBE (p < 0.001 and p = 0.005). In contrast, the depiction of the vasculature was better for VIBE than CODE images (p = 0.003). The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were significant greater in VIBE than CODE except for SNRlung and SNRnodule (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed the potential of CODE and VIBE sequences in the evaluation of localized thoracic abnormalities including solid pulmonary nodules.

ABSTRACT

Cationic alteration related to a sodium super ion conductor (NASICON)-structured Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) is an effective strategy for formulating high-energy and stable cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this study, we altered the structure of NVP with dual cations, namely, Cr and Fe, to develop Na3V1.5Cr0.4Fe0.1(PO4)3 cathodes for SIBs with high-rate capability (∼71 mAh g-1 at 100 C) and an extreme cycle life output (∼75 mAh g-1 with 95% capacity retention for 10,000 cycles). These excellent electrochemical properties can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of Cr and Fe in the NVP structure, as verified experimentally and theoretically. Therefore, the proposed cosubstitution method can enhance the performance of SIBs by improving their structural stability, electronic conductivity, and phase-change behavior.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic disadvantage during childhood and adolescence is associated with higher risk for many physical health problems, including infectious disease, throughout the lifespan. Greater negative affective (NA) reactivity has shown similar links to greater risk for physical health conditions and altered patterns of biological functioning associated with acute respiratory infection as socioeconomic disadvantage; yet their interactive effects on physical health outcomes have not been examined. Thus, the present study examined whether NA reactivity accentuated the link between early socioeconomic disadvantage and susceptibility to the common cold. METHOD: Participants were 212 adults (42% female, 18-55 years old) who completed measures of childhood socioeconomic status (SES; parental home ownership) and were subsequently exposed to a virus that causes the common cold. Participants then remained quarantined for 5 days, during which multiple indicators of viral infection and clinical illness were assessed. Before and after quarantine, participants completed a laboratory stress task to assess NA reactivity. RESULTS: NA reactivity moderated the relationship between parental home ownership and clinical cold diagnosis in adulthood (b = -0.11, p = .018), such that fewer years of parental home ownership was associated with increased odds for developing a cold only among adults who had greater NA reactivity (OR = 0.89, 95% confidence interval, CI [0.82, 0.96]), but not among those who had lower NA reactivity (OR = 1.01, 95% CI [0.94, 1.09]). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that how individuals negatively react to psychosocial stressors in adulthood may exacerbate the impact of childhood SES on acute infection susceptibility. ABSTRACT

Alloying-type metallic tin is perceived as a potential anode material for K-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and reasonable working potential. However, pure Sn still face intractable issues of inferior K+ storage capability owing to the mechanical degradation of electrode against large volume changes and formation of intermediary insulating phases K4 Sn9 and KSn during alloying reaction. Herein, the TiC/C-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is prepared as an effective buffer matrix and composited with Sn particles (Sn-TiC/C-CNTs) through the high-energy ball-milling method. Owing to the conductive and rigid properties, the TiC/C-CNTs matrix enhances the electrical conductivity as well as mechanical integrity of Sn in the composite material and thus ultimately contributes to performance supremacy in terms of electrochemical K+ storage properties. During potassiation process, the TiC/C-CNTs matrix not only dissipates the internal stress toward random radial orientations within the Sn particle but also provides electrical pathways for the intermediate insulating phases; this tends to reduce microcracking and prevent considerable electrode degradation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) ventilation flow-weighted (VFW) maps together with 3D ventilation-weighted (VW) maps may help to better assess pulmonary function. PURPOSE: To investigate the use of 3D VFW and VW maps for evaluating pulmonary ventilation function. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Two patients (one male, 85 years old; one female, 64 years old) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and nine healthy subjects (all male; 23-27 years). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3-T, 3D radial UTE imaging. ASSESSMENT: 3D VFW and VW maps were calculated from 3D UTE MRI by voxel-wise subtraction of respiratory phase images. Their validation was tested in nine healthy volunteers using slow/deep and fast/shallow breathing conditions. Additional validation was performed by comparison with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) ventilation maps of one healthy participant. For comparison, gravity dependence of anterior-posterior regional ventilation was assessed by one-dimensional plot of the mean signal intensity for each coronal slice. Structural similarity index measure was also calculated. Finally, VW maps and VFW maps of two COPD patients were evaluated for emphysema lesions with reference to CT images. STATISTICAL TESTS: Wilcoxon sign-rank tests for regional Ventilation and Ventilation flow, analysis of variance, post-hoc t-tests and Bonferroni correction, coefficient of variation, Kullback-Liebler divergence. A P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The validation of 3D VFW and VW maps was shown by statistically significant differences in ventilation flow and ventilation between the breathing conditions. Additionally, UTE-MRI and SPECT-based ventilation maps showed gravitational dependence in the anteroposterior direction. When applied to patients with COPD, the use of 3D VFW and VW maps was able to differentiate between two patients with different phenotypes. DATA CONCLUSION: The use of 3D VFW and VW maps can provide regional information on ventilation function and potentially contribute to assessment of COPD subtypes and disease progression. ABSTRACT

Objective: This study investigated the change in the number of patients with head trauma according to the trauma mechanism among severely injured patients transferred to the emergency department of Wonju Severance Christian Hospital before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Medical records (sex, age, diagnosis, trauma mechanism, and injury severity score) of patients referred to the emergency room between January 2018 and December 2019 and January 2020 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed, verified, and compared. Results: Between 2020 and 2021, the number of patients with traumatic brain injury decreased by 251 (32%). No significant differences were observed in sex, age, or time of accident. From 2020 to 2021, among the trauma mechanisms, the number of cases involving rolling down slightly reduced compared with those involving other mechanisms. Furthermore, cerebral contusions among intracranial lesions significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Partial restrictions on social activities owing to COVID-19 are ongoing. Further investigation of the clinical characteristics of trauma patients over a longer period is required.

ABSTRACT

Among lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery materials, sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) has attracted substantial attention as a cathode material owing to its potential to bypass the problematic polysulfide formation and shuttling effect. Carbonate-based electrolytes have been eschewed compared with ether-based electrolytes because of their poor compatibility with Li metal anodes. In this work, we design and study an electrolyte comprising 0.8 M of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, 0.2 M of lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate, and 0.05 M of lithium hexafluorophosphate in ethyl methyl carbonate/fluoroethylene carbonate = 3:1 v/v solution in the Li-S battery coupled with a Li metal anode and SPAN cathode. The well-designed carbonate-based electrolyte effectively stabilizes both electrodes, delivering high Coulombic efficiencies with stable cyclability. Studies using operando optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy demonstrate that dense, uniform Li deposition is promoted to suppress dendrite growth even at a high current density. Operando Raman spectroscopy reveals a reversible Li+ storage behavior in the SPAN structure through the cleavage of disulfide bonds and their redimerization during lithiation and delithiation. As a result, the proposed Li-S battery delivers an overall capacity retention of 73.5% over 1000 cycles, with high Coulombic efficiencies over 99.9%.

ABSTRACT

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries using Li2S and Li-free anodes have emerged as a potential high-energy and safe battery technology. Although the operation of Li-S full batteries based on Li2S has been demonstrated at room temperature, their effective use at a subzero temperature has not been realized due to the low electrochemical utilization of Li2S. Here, ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is introduced as a functional additive that allows Li-S full batteries to operate at -10 °C. The polar N-H bonds in the additive alter the activation pathway of Li2S by inducing the dissolution of the Li2S surface. Then, Li2S with an amorphized surface layer undergoes the modified activation process, which consists of the disproportionation and direct conversion reaction, through which Li2S is efficiently converted into S8. The Li-S full battery using NH4NO3 delivers a reversible capacity and cycling stability over 400 cycles at -10 °C.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) is a versatile therapeutic agent. H2 gas inhalation is reportedly safe and has a positive impact on a range of illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Herein, we investigated the effects of 4 weeks of H2 gas inhalation on community-dwelling adults of various ages. Fifty-four participants, including those who dropped out (5%), were screened and enrolled. The selected participants were treated as a single group without randomization. We evaluated the association between total and differential white blood cell (WBC) counts and AD risk at individual levels after 4 weeks of H2 gas inhalation treatment. The total and differential WBC counts were not adversely affected after H2 gas inhalation, indicating that it was safe and well tolerated. Investigation of oxidative stress markers such as reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide showed that their levels decreased post-treatment. Furthermore, evaluation of dementia-related biomarkers, such as beta-site APP cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE-1), amyloid beta (Aß), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), T-tau, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), and inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6), showed that their cognitive condition significantly improved after treatment, in most cases. Collectively, our results indicate that H2 gas inhalation may be a good candidate for improving AD with cognitive dysfunction in community-dwelling adults of different ages.

Anxiety disorders in autistic children are associated with significant functional impairment. Few studies have examined impairing anxiety presentations in autistic preschool children (i.e., 3-5 years old). This cross-sectional study examined the phenomenology of impairing anxiety and the strongest correlates of anxiety in 75 autistic preschool children. Parents completed a diagnostic interview that assesses two anxiety types, DSM-5 anxiety disorders and impairing distinct anxiety presentations, and measures of anxiety correlates. An exploratory network analysis examined connections between anxiety and its correlates. Forty percent of children had impairing anxiety. Specific phobia followed by 'other social fear,' a type of distinct anxiety, were the most common anxiety types. Child intolerance of uncertainty (IU) was the only correlate that was associated with anxiety in a network analysis framework. Child IU linked anxiety to two other correlates, sensory over-responsivity and somatic symptoms. Findings emphasize the need for early intervention for anxiety and further research on its correlates.

ABSTRACT

The use of bioplastics, which can alleviate environmental pollution caused by non-degradable bioplastics, has received attention. As there are many types of bioplastics, method that can treat them simultaneously is important. Therefore, Bacillus sp. JY35 which can degrade different types of bioplastics, was screened in previous study. Most types of bioplastics, such as polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), (P(3HB-co-4HB)), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polycaprolactone (PCL), can be degraded by esterase family enzymes. To identify the genes that are involved in bioplastic degradation, analysis with whole-genome sequencing was performed. Among the many esterase enzymes, three carboxylesterase and one triacylglycerol lipase were identified and selected based on previous studies. Esterase activity using p-nitrophenyl substrates was measured, and the supernatant of JY35_02679 showed strong emulsion clarification activity compared with others. In addition, when recombinant E. coli was applied to the clear zone test, only the JY35_02679 gene showed activity in the clear zone test with bioplastic containing solid cultures. Further quantitative analysis showed 100 % PCL degradation at 7 days and 45.7 % PBS degradation at 10 days. We identified a gene encoding a bioplastic-degrading enzyme in Bacillus sp. JY35 and successfully expressed the gene in heterologous E. coli, which secreted esterases with broad specificity.

ABSTRACT

Crotamine, one of the major toxins present in the venom of the South American rattlesnake Crotalus durissus terrificus, exhibits potent cytotoxic properties and has been suggested for cancer therapy applications. However, its selectivity for cancer cells needs to be improved. This study designed and produced a novel recombinant immunotoxin, HER2(scFv)-CRT, composed of crotamine and single-chain Fv (scFv) derived from trastuzumab targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). The recombinant immunotoxin was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using various chromatographic techniques. The cytotoxicity of HER2(scFv)-CRT was assessed in three breast cancer cell lines, demonstrating enhanced specificity and toxicity in HER2-expressing cells. These findings suggest that the crotamine-based recombinant immunotoxin has the potential to expand the repertoire of recombinant immunotoxin applications in cancer therapy.

Papaya fruit (Carica papaya) has different degrees of ripening within each fruit, affecting its commercial market value. The fruit characteristics of "Tainung No. 2" Red papaya were investigated at the stem-end, middle, and calyx-end across 3 ripening stages and categorized based on fruit skin coloration: unripe at 16 weeks after anthesis (WAA), half-ripe at 18 WAA, and full-ripe at 20 WAA. The fruits maintained an elliptical shape during ripening with a ratio of 2.36 of the length to the width. The peel and pulp color changed from green to white to yellow during ripening, regardless of the three parts. In the pulp, soluble solid contents increased, and firmness decreased during ripening but did not differ among the three parts. Individual nutrient contents, including metabolites and minerals, changed dynamically between the ripening stages and fruit parts. Total carbohydrates and proteins, N, and K, were accumulated more at the stem-end during ripening; meanwhile, fructose, glucose, Mg, and Mn were accumulated more at the calyx-end. In the principal component analysis, ripening stages and fruit parts were distinctly determined by the first and second principal components, respectively. Understanding the nutrient and metabolite dynamics during ripening and their distribution within the fruit can help optimize cultivation practices, enhance fruit quality, and ultimately benefit both growers and consumers.

ABSTRACT

Batteries using potassium metal (K-metal) anode are considered a new type of low-cost and high-energy storage device. However, the thermodynamic instability of the K-metal anode in organic electrolyte solutions causes uncontrolled dendritic growth and parasitic reactions, leading to rapid capacity loss and low Coulombic efficiency of K-metal batteries. Herein, an advanced electrolyte comprising 1 M potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) + 0.05 M potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF6 ) dissolved in dimethoxyethane (DME) is introduced as a simple and effective strategy of regulated solvation chemistry, showing an enhanced interfacial stability of the K-metal anode. Incorporating 0.05 M KPF6 into the 1 M KFSI in DME electrolyte solution decreases the number of solvent molecules surrounding the K ion and simultaneously leads to facile K+ de-solvation. During the electrodeposition process, these unique features can lower the exchange current density between the electrolyte and K-metal anode, thereby improving the uniformity of K electrodeposition, as well as potentially suppressing dendritic growth. Even under a high current density of 4 mA cm-2 , the K-metal anode in 0.05 M KPF6 -containing electrolyte ensures high areal capacity and an unprecedented lifespan with stable Coulombic efficiency in both symmetrical half-cells and full-cells employing a sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathode.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adipocyte dysregulation of lipid droplet (LD) metabolism caused by altered expression of LD proteins contributes to obesity-related metabolic diseases. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate whether expression levels of PLIN1, CIDEA, and CIDEC were altered in adipose tissues of women with obesity and type 2 diabetes and whether their alterations were associated with metabolic risk factors. METHODS: Normal-weight (NW; 18.5 kg/m2 < BMI ≤ 25 kg/m2; n = 43), nondiabetic obese (OB; BMI > 30 kg/m2; n = 38), and diabetic obese (OB/DM; BMI > 30 kg/m2, fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, HbA1c ≥ 6.5%; n = 22) women were recruited. Metabolic parameters were measured, and expressions of PLIN1, CIDEA, CIDEC, and obesity-related genes were quantified in abdominal subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral adipose tissues (VAT). Effects of proinflammatory cytokines, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress inducers, and metabolic improvement agents on LD protein gene expressions were investigated in human adipocytes. RESULTS: PLIN1, CIDEA, and CIDEC expressions were lower in SAT and higher in VAT in OB subjects relative to NW subjects; however, they were suppressed in both fat depots in OB/DM subjects relative to OB (P < 0.05). Across the entire cohort, whereas VAT PLIN1 (r = 0.349) and CIDEC expressions (r = 0.282) were positively associated with BMI (P < 0.05), SAT PLIN1 (r = -0.390) and CIDEA expressions (r = -0.565) were inversely associated. After adjustment for BMI, some or all of the adipose LD protein gene expressions were negatively associated with fasting glucose (r = -0.259 or higher) and triglyceride levels (r = -0.284 or higher) and positively associated with UCP1 expression (r = 0.353 or higher) (P < 0.05). In adipocytes, LD protein gene expressions were 55-70% downregulated by increased proinflammatory cytokines and ER stress but 2-4-fold upregulated by the metabolic improvement agents exendin-4 and dapagliflozin (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that reduction of adipose LD protein expression is involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders in women with obesity and type 2 diabetes and that increasing LD protein expression in adipocytes could control development of metabolic disorders.

Background/Aims: There is increasing evidence that supplementation with pre- and probiotics appears to have positive effects on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a new synbiotic formulation on gastrointestinal symptoms in elderly patients with IBS. Methods: Sixty-seven IBS patients aged ≥60 years were randomly assigned to either a placebo group (n=34) or a synbiotic group (n=33). During a 4-week intervention, subjects used a placebo or a synbiotic containing Lactobacillus paracasei DKGF1 and extracts of Opuntia humifusa once a day. Patients were evaluated with the subject global assessment, visual analog scale, and Bristol stool chart. The primary outcome was the overall responder rate and the secondary outcome was the responder rates for abdominal symptom reduction at week 4. Results: Overall, responder rates were significantly higher in the synbiotic group (51.5%) than in the placebo group (23.5%) (p=0.017). Abdominal pain (58.8% vs 81.8%) and psychological well-being (26.4% vs 60.6%) were noticeably improved in the synbiotic group (p=0.038 and p=0.004, respectively). However, there were no significant differences in gas and bloating symptoms (p=0.88 and p=0.88, respectively). In patients with constipation-dominant and diarrhea-dominant IBS (n=16), the synbiotic significantly improved abdominal pain and defecation symptoms (responder rates for the placebo vs the synbiotic: 22.2% vs 85.7%, p=0.04). There were no adverse events in either group. Conclusions: The results indicate that this new synbiotic supplement can potentially relieve abdominal symptoms in elderly IBS patients.

ABSTRACT

Ultrahigh-resolution patterning with high-throughput and high-fidelity is highly in demand for expanding the potential of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) from mobile and TV displays into near-to-eye microdisplays. However, current patterning techniques so far suffer from low resolution, consecutive pattern for RGB pixelation, low pattern fidelity, and throughput issue. Here, we present a silicone engineered anisotropic lithography of the organic light-emitting semiconductor (OLES) that in-situ forms a non-volatile etch-blocking layer during reactive ion etching. This unique feature not only slows the etch rate but also enhances the anisotropy of etch direction, leading to gain delicate control in forming ultrahigh-density multicolor OLES patterns (up to 4500 pixels per inch) through photolithography. This patterning strategy inspired by silicon etching chemistry is expected to provide new insights into ultrahigh-density OLED microdisplays.

ABSTRACT

Recently, a novel electrochemical regulation associated with a deposition/dissolution reaction on an electrode surface has been proven to show superiority in large-scale energy storage systems (ESSs). Hence, in the search for high-performance electrodes showcasing these novel regulations, we utilized a low-cost ZnO microsphere electrode to construct aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) that supplied a harvestable and storable charge through electrochemical deposition/dissolution via a reversible manganese oxidation reaction (MOR)/manganese reduction reaction (MRR), respectively, induced by the inherent formation/dissolution of zinc basic sulfate in a mild aqueous electrolyte solution containing 2 M ZnSO4 and 0.2 M MnSO4.

ABSTRACT

Endometrial carcinoma is a common gynecologic malignancy; however, metastasis to the small bowel is rare. Metastatic endometrial carcinoma usually occurs through local extension rather than distant metastasis. Isolated small bowel metastasis is extremely rare; further, intussusception with resultant intestinal obstruction is not common. We report the imaging findings of a patient with isolated small bowel metastasis of endometrial carcinoma with resultant jejunojejunal intussusception.
