ABSTRACT

Erythrocyte autoantibodies can be elicited in mice by injection of rat red blood cells (RBC) which are cross-reactive with mouse RBC. In this report, we show that histamine injected in vivo delayed the production of autoantibodies among BALB/c and OF1 mice. In contrast, the induction of autoantibodies in SJL mice was not affected by histamine. Furthermore, histamine did not affect the production of anti-rat RBC. Cimetidine (anti-H2) but not diphenhydramine (anti-H1) inhibited the histamine effect.

ABSTRACT

The IgE contents of various therapeutic immunoglobulin (Ig) preparations of placental or plasmatic origin were measured. Their effects on spontaneous IgE synthesis by lymphocytes from healthy and atopic subjects were also studied. Whatever their origin, Igs contained IgE in varying amounts, depending on the batch. Only Igs of placental origin inhibited spontaneous IgE synthesis; this effect appeared linked to IgE content.

ABSTRACT

Fifty-five consecutive patients with stage II and III myeloma were treated at 7 centers with alternating combinations of 7 cytostatics and prednisolone. 30/48 evaluable patients responded to the combination chemotherapy, 10/55 patients died within 15 months, and the median survival was 40 months. No advantage could be shown over a previous non-alternating combination of two cytostatics. However, stage III patients had a significantly better survival statistically (p less than 0.05) than earlier patients from the same center given only one cytostatic.

ABSTRACT

In normoglycaemic subjects the haemoglobin glycosylation rate primarily depends on duration of erythrocyte life. Measurements of glycosylated haemoglobin therefore can be used to evaluate erythrocyte life. Indeed, glycosylated haemoglobin is significantly reduced (p less than 0.001) in patients with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia or Minkowski-Chauffard syndrome as compared with patients with non-haemolytic anaemia. In addition, there is a strong correlation (r = 0.92) in non-diabetic subjects between the level of glycosylated haemoglobin and the percentage of daily haemolysis, as determined by a method using 51 Cr-labelled antologous red cells.

ABSTRACT

A native Cambodian woman delivered a third full-term female baby who had a strongly positive direct antiglobulin test. During the pregnancy and after the delivery, the woman had a negative irregular antibody screening test using standard red blood cell panels, but the indirect antiglobulin test between the mother's serum and the father's red blood cells was strongly positive. The antibody could be eluted from the baby's red blood cells and its was identified as an anti-Dia (Diegoa). The child developed a mild hyperbilirubinemia and recovered without treatment.

ABSTRACT

About six of sigmoid volvulus m children, the authors underline the rarity of this etiology in large bowel obstruction. Two cases happened during neonate and four cases are associated with other pathologic diseases (2 neurologic ans 2 Hirschsprung diseases). Diagnosis is based on baryum enema and the best surgical management in emergency is resection and derivation with secondary anastomosis.

ABSTRACT

We report an evaluation of a commercially available kit, the Biomérieux IgE-kit, for determination of total IgE in serum by the EIA double antibody sandwich method. Results by this procedure and PRIST (Pharmacia) show a degree of association (r) of 0.98 and a regression equation of log Y = 0.79 log PRIST + log 3.31. Correlation between the IgE kit and RIST shows a degree of association of 1.00 and a regression equation of log Y = 1.01 log RIST--log 1.05. Between-laboratory standard deviations are 3%, 3%, and 15% for the IgE concentrations of, respectively, 83, 285, and 900 IU/ml. Similarly, intra- and inter-assay correlations were performed on 60 lyophilised serum samples tested in the four centres. No protein interference was found except for cryoprecipitates. The favourable correlation with existing procedures and the feasibility of this kit offer a new way of measuring IgE levels.
