ABSTRACT

(1) Background: University students, often constrained by time and influenced by socio-economic factors such as culture and religion, frequently adopt diets centred on ultra-processed foods (UPFs), increasing the risk of long-term non-communicable diseases. This study aimed to assess UPF consumption among Spanish university students and explore the potential impact of religion and the academic year on their eating habits. (2) Methods: In a cross-sectional study of 257 university students aged 18-31, UPF consumption was assessed using NOVA food classification at the academic year's start and end. Chi-square and Wilcoxon tests analysed UPF consumption changes, while binary logistic regression identified associations between religion and weekly UPF consumption. (3) Results: Muslim students had a consumption of industrial bakery products almost five times [95% CI: 2.694-9.259] higher than that observed among Christians. Similar data were observed for artificial juice consumption (OR = 3.897, 95% CI = 2.291-6.627) and candy consumption (OR = 3.724, 95% CI = 2.051-6.762). Moreover, a greater percentage of calories and grams of saturated fats from UPFs was observed for Muslims at the end of the study. (4) Conclusions: Highlighting the impact of religion on UPF consumption among students underscores the necessity of monitoring and intervening in dietary habits to prevent undesirable long-term complications such as cardiovascular diseases.

ABSTRACT

The poultry-housing environment plays a significant role in the transmission and persistence of the egg-associated pathogen Salmonella Enteritidis in laying flocks. The commercial egg industry is in the midst of a transition toward cage-free housing, but the food safety ramifications of this shift are not yet certain. The present study assessed internal organ colonization by Salmonella Enteritidis in layer pullets reared in cage-free housing and infected at two different ages. Groups of 280 pullets were transferred from the rearing facility (at 9 wk of age in one trial and 15 wk in another) to a containment facility with four isolation rooms simulating commercial cage-free barns with perches and nest boxes (70 birds/room). Twenty-four pullets in each room were orally inoculated with Salmonella Enteritidis immediately after placement in the containment facility. At 1-2 wk postinoculation in each trial, samples of liver, spleen, and intestinal tract were collected from all birds in two rooms for bacteriologic culturing to detect Salmonella Enteritidis. At 21-22 wk of age, samples of spleen, ovary, and intestinal tract were similarly collected and tested from all birds in the remaining two rooms. Among samples collected at 1-2 wk postinoculation, Salmonella Enteritidis was isolated significantly more often from groups of pullets infected initially at 15 wk of age than from those infected at 9 wk (61% vs. 38% of livers, 59% vs. 31% of spleens, and 84% vs. 57% of intestines). Among samples collected at 21-22 wk of age, the frequency of recovery of Salmonella Enteritidis was again significantly greater in birds infected at 15 wk of age than in those infected at 9 wk (16% vs. 6% of spleens, 9% vs. 1% of ovaries, and 26% vs. 10% of intestines). These data suggest that Salmonella Enteritidis infections introduced into flocks during the later stages of pullet rearing have greater potential to persist into the early phase of egg production.


Nota de investigación- Colonización de órganos internos por Salmonella Enteritidis en pollitas de postura infectadas en dos edades diferentes durante la crianza en alojamiento sin jaulas. El ambiente en alojamientos avícolas juega un papel importante en la transmisión y persistencia del patógeno asociado a los huevos Salmonella Enteritidis en parvadas postura. Veinticuatro pollitas en cada sala fueron inoculadas oralmente con Salmonella Enteritidis inmediatamente después de su colocación en la instalación de contención. En cada ensayo, de una a dos semanas después de la inoculación, se recolectaron muestras de hígado, bazo y tracto intestinal para cultivo bacteriológico de todas las aves en dos salas para detectar Salmonella Enteritidis. A las 21-22 semanas de edad, se recolectaron y analizaron de manera similar muestras de bazo, ovario y tracto intestinal de todas las aves en las dos salas restantes. Entre las muestras recolectadas entre una y dos semanas después de la inoculación, Salmonella Enteritidis se aisló significativamente con mayor frecuencia en grupos de pollitas infectadas inicialmente a las 15 semanas de edad que en aquellas infectadas a las 9 semanas (61% contra 38 % en los hígados, 59% contra 31% de bazos y 84 % contra 57% en intestinos). Entre las muestras recolectadas a las 21-22 semanas de edad, la frecuencia de recuperación de Salmonella Enteritidis fue nuevamente significativamente mayor en aves infectadas a las 15 semanas de edad que en aquellas infectadas a las 9 semanas (16% contra 6% de bazos, 9% contra 1% en ovarios y 26% contra 10% de los intestinos). Estos datos sugieren que las infecciones por Salmonella Enteritidis introducidas en las parvadas durante las últimas etapas de la cría de pollitas tienen un mayor potencial para persistir en la fase inicial de la producción de huevos.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines in preventing infection and hospitalization among healthcare workers (HCWs) in the Valencian Community (Spain), considering vaccination timing, dose number, and predominant variant. METHODS: A test-negative case-control design estimated vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic disease and hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2. HCWs who underwent PCR or antigen testing for SARS-CoV-2 from January 2021 to March 2022 were included. Cases had a positive diagnostic test, while controls had negative tests. Adjusted vaccine effectiveness (aVE) was calculated using the formula: aVE = (1 - Odds ratio) × 100. RESULTS: During the Delta variant's predominance, aVE against infection within 12-120 days post-second dose was 64.8 % (BNT162b2) and 59.4 % (mRNA-1273), declining to 21.2 % and 42.2 %, respectively, after 120 days. For the Omicron variant, aVE within 12-120 days post-second dose was 61.1 % (BNT162b2) and 85.1 % (mRNA-1273), decreasing to 36.7 % and 24.9 %, respectively, after 120 days. After a booster dose of mRNA-1273, aVE was 64.0 % (BNT162b2 recipients) and 65.9 % (initial mRNA-1273 recipients). Regardless of variant, aVE for hospitalization prevention after 2 doses was 87.0 % (BNT162b2) and 89.0 % (mRNA-1273). CONCLUSION: The administration of two doses of Moderna-mRNA-1273 against SARS-CoV-2 in HCWs proved to be highly effective in preventing infections and hospitalizations in the first 120 days after the second dose during the predominance of the Omicron variant. The decline in VE after 120 days since the administration of the second dose was significantly restored by the booster dose administration. This increase in VE was greater for the Pfizer vaccine. COVID-19 hospitalization prevention remained stable with both mRNA vaccines throughout the study period.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that physical activity (PA) could improve cognitive performance in youths, but whether these effects occur from early childhood remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To summarize evidence on the effects of PA interventions on cognitive performance in early childhood. METHODS: We performed a systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and PsycINFO (from inception to 6 September 2023) for randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of PA interventions (≥ 3 weeks) on cognitive-related outcomes in early childhood (3-6 years). We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis when five or more studies assessed a given outcome. The potential moderating role of participant (e.g., age) and intervention characteristics (e.g., duration, volume, intensity, cognitive engagement) was also assessed. RESULTS: We found a total of 24 studies (N = 3483 children) that were deemed to be of overall fair methodological quality. PA interventions were supervised and lasted between 3 and 24 weeks. The most common session duration was 30 min, with a frequency of two sessions per week. Pooled analyses revealed that PA interventions have positive effects on all analysed outcomes, including attention (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18-0.79, p = 0.002), inhibition (SMD = 0.45, 95% CI 0.06-0.84, p = 0.022), working memory (SMD = 0.50, 95% CI 0.18-0.82, p = 0.002), cognitive flexibility (SMD = 0.39, 0.15-0.62, p = 0.002) and vocabulary (SMD = 1.18, 0.19-2.16, p = 0.019). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the benefits in all cases except for inhibition (p = 0.062). No consistent differences were found relating to any moderator variable. CONCLUSIONS: Although further research is warranted, our findings suggest that PA interventions may improve cognitive performance in early childhood, particularly in the domains of attention, inhibition, working memory, cognitive flexibility and vocabulary. These findings might support the implementation of PA interventions from early childhood. PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42021249319.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Unsupervised exercise intervention (UNSUP) appears to be a practical and beneficial strategy for older adults, although its feasibility and effectiveness compared to supervised exercise intervention (SUP) remains unknown. We aimed to compare the safety, attendance/adherence rates, and effectiveness of SUP versus UNSUP on physical function and well-being outcomes in older adults. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and APA PsycINFO up to September 2022 for randomized controlled trials comparing SUP versus UNSUP in older adults (≥ 60 years). Safety and attendance/adherence rates were registered as indicators of feasibility, and meta-analyses were performed for physical function and well-being outcomes. Sub-analyses were performed for those studies that applied a similar intervention in both groups and for those studies where participants performed ≥ 66% of the sessions in the assigned condition. RESULTS: Thirty-four studies were included (n = 2830). No serious adverse events were reported, with similar attendance rates (81%) for both SUP and UNSUP. Compared with UNSUP, SUP induced significant higher benefits on knee extension strength (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.18, p = 0.002), sit-to-stand test (STS, SMD = 0.25, p = 0.050), timed-up-and-go test (TUG, SMD = 0.21, p = 0.035), usual gait speed (SMD = 0.29, p = 0.026), lean mass (mean difference = 1.05 kg, p < 0.001) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL, SMD = 0.21, p = 0.035), albeit only knee extension strength remained significant in sensitivity analyses. Sub-analyses revealed superior benefits of SUP on knee extension strength when only considering those studies that applied a similar intervention in both SUP and UNSUP groups. However, no significant benefits were found for the remaining outcomes. Beneficial effects of SUP over UNSUP were also observed for knee extension strength, STS, functional reach test, TUG, usual gait speed, lean mass, and HRQoL when separately analyzing those studies in which participants performed ≥ 66% of the sessions in the assigned condition. CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence suggests that both SUP and UNSUP programs are safe and could exert benefits on physical function and HRQoL. However, despite being associated with similar attendance rates, SUP might offer some additional benefits, although further high-quality research (i.e., accounting for confounding factors such as presence of supervised sessions in UNSUP or vice versa, as well as equating the exercise dose) is necessary to confirm these findings. ABSTRACT

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive, malignant, and lethal brain tumor of the central nervous system. Its poor prognosis lies in its inefficient response to currently available treatments that consist of surgical resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Recently, the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as a possible kind of cell therapy against glioblastoma is gaining great interest due to their immunomodulatory properties, tumor tropism, and differentiation into other cell types. However, MSCs seem to present both antitumor and pro-tumor properties depending on the tissue from which they come. In this work, the possibility of using MSCs to deliver therapeutic genes, oncolytic viruses, and miRNA is presented, as well as strategies that can improve their therapeutic efficacy against glioblastoma, such as CAR-T cells, nanoparticles, and exosomes.

ABSTRACT

Fragment screening is used to identify binding sites and leads in drug discovery, but it is often unclear which binding sites are functionally important. Here, data from 37 experiments, and 1309 protein structures binding to 1601 ligands were analysed. A method to group ligands by binding sites is introduced and sites clustered according to profiles of relative solvent accessibility. This identified 293 unique ligand binding sites, grouped into four clusters (C1-4). C1 includes larger, buried, conserved, and population missense-depleted sites, enriched in known functional sites. C4 comprises smaller, accessible, divergent, missense-enriched sites, depleted in functional sites. A site in C1 is 28 times more likely to be functional than one in C4. Seventeen sites, which to the best of our knowledge are novel, in 13 proteins are identified as likely to be functionally important with examples from human tenascin and 5-aminolevulinate synthase highlighted. A multi-layer perceptron, and K-nearest neighbours model are presented to predict cluster labels for ligand binding sites with an accuracy of 96% and 100%, respectively, so allowing functional classification of sites for proteins not in this set. Our findings will be of interest to those studying protein-ligand interactions and developing new drugs or function modulators.

BACKGROUND: Physical behaviours (ie, physical activity and sedentary behaviour) might have a role in the development of sarcopenia, although the evidence is unclear. We aimed to explore the association of total and intensity-specific levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with sarcopenia and its components (ie, muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance) in older adults. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis and searched MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to July 26, 2022, for peer-reviewed, observational studies or baseline data from randomised clinical trials conducted in older adults (ie, individual age ≥60 years or mean age ≥65 years) and published in English that reported on the association of physical activity or sedentary behaviour or both with sarcopenia (or its determinants: muscle mass or strength, and physical performance). Physical activity and sedentary behaviour were measured by any method. The main outcome was sarcopenia, which could be diagnosed by any means. Estimates were extracted and pooled using Bayesian meta-analytic models and publication bias was assessed using the Egger's test. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42022315865. FINDINGS: We identified 15 766 records, of which 124 studies (230 174 older adults; 121 301 [52·7%] were female and 108 873 [47·3%] were male) were included in the systematic review. 86 studies were subsequently included in the meta-analysis. Higher levels of total physical activity were inversely associated with sarcopenia both cross-sectionally (21 studies, n=59 572; odds ratio 0·49, 95% credible interval 0·37-0·62) and longitudinally (four studies, n=7545; 0·51, 0·27-0·94). A protective association was also identified for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in cross-sectional research (five studies, n=6787; 0·85, 0·71-0·99), whereas no association was identified for the remaining physical behaviours (ie, steps, light physical activity, or sedentary behaviour). INTERPRETATION: Total and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity are inversely associated with sarcopenia. These findings might support the importance of moderate-to-vigorous, rather than light, intensity physical activity-based interventions to prevent sarcopenia. FUNDING: None. ABSTRACT

In the context of the alarming rise of infant obesity and its health implications, the present research aims to uncover disruptions in postprandial lipid metabolism and the composition of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins in obese adolescents. A double-blind, controlled clinical trial in the postprandial phase on 23 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years was carried out. Twelve participants were categorized as obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2 and percentile > 95) and 11 as normal-weight (BMI = 20-25 kg/m2, percentile 5-85). Blood samples were collected after a 12-h overnight fast and postprandially after consumption of a standardized breakfast containing olive oil, tomato, bread, orange juice, and skimmed milk. Obese adolescents exhibited elevated triglyceride concentrations in both fasting and postprandial states and higher TG/apo-B48 ratios, indicating larger postprandial triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) particle size, which suggests impaired clearance. Obese subjects also exhibited higher n-6 PUFA concentrations, potentially linked to increased TRL hydrolysis and the release of pro-inflammatory adipokines. In contrast, TRL from normal-weight individuals showed higher concentrations of oleic acid and DHA (n-3 PUFA), with possible anti-inflammatory effects. The results indicate an interplay involving postprandial TRL metabolism and adipokines within the context of adolescent obesity, pointing to potential cardiovascular implications in the future.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: There is a growing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition associated with a higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. We assessed the association between self-reported physical activity (PA) and CKD and also studied whether PA attenuates CKD-associated CVD risk. METHODS: A cohort of Spanish adults (18-64 years) participated in this nationwide study. Participants were categorized at baseline as being either inactive (performing no PA), regularly, or insufficiently active (meeting or not, respectively, international PA recommendations) and were followed for up to 5 years. The presence of CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 ) and major CVD risk factors (diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, obesity) was determined at baseline and at follow-up. RESULTS: 517 917 participants (44 ± 9 years, 67% male, CKD prevalence = 7%) were studied at baseline, with prospective analyses (median follow-up = 2 years, range = 2-5) in a subcohort of 264 581 individuals. Compared to physical inactivity, cross-sectional analyses at baseline showed that regular PA (odds ratio = 0.80; 95% confidence interval = 0.79-0.81), but not insufficient PA (1.02; 0.99-1.04) was associated with lower CKD prevalence. However, prospective analyses failed to confirm this association (p > 0.1). In turn, CKD was associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension (+3%) and diabetes (+5%) at baseline and with a greater incidence of hypertension at follow-up (+37%). Among those participants with CKD, regular PA was associated with a lower prevalence (-45% to -7%) and incidence (-38% to -4%) of all CVD risk factors. CONCLUSION: Although PA might not reduce incident CKD in the middle term (~2 years), it can attenuate the CVD risk linked to this condition.

BACKGROUND: There has been an increase in the number of studies examining the effect of acute and chronic physical activity on academic outcomes in children and adolescents in the last two decades. We aimed to systematically determine the acute effects of physical activity on academic outcomes in school-aged youth and to examine possible moderators. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search using PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO databases (from inception to 11th January 2023) for studies assessing the acute effects of physical activity on academic performance-related outcomes in school-aged youth. A univariate and multivariate meta-analysis was conducted based on a random-effects model with restricted maximum likelihood used to pool the academic outcomes results (Hedge's g). RESULTS: We included 11 articles (803 children and adolescents [range: 6-16 years]) in the systematic review. Overall, acute physical activity increased academic outcomes (Hedge's g = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.20-0.50). Multivariate meta-analyses revealed that physical activity increased academic performance in mathematics (Hedge's g = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.16-0.42) and language (Hedge's g = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.09-0.47). Only behavior change techniques (Hedge's g = 0.54, 95% CI, 0.18-0.90, p < 0.001) played a significant role in this relationship. CONCLUSIONS: A single bout of physical activity can improve academic outcomes in school-aged youth, which may serve as a complementary tool for the educational field. However, the observed heterogeneity in the results indicates that we should interpret the findings obtained with caution.

ABSTRACT

Evidence of the pharmacological activity of oleanolic acid (OA) suggests its potential therapeutic application. However, its use in functional foods, dietary supplements, or nutraceuticals is hindered by limited human bioavailability studies. The BIO-OLTRAD trial is a double-blind, randomized controlled study with 22 participants that received a single dose of 30 mg OA formulated as a functional olive oil. The study revealed that the maximum serum concentration of OA ranged from 500 to 600 ng mL-1, with an AUC0-∞ value of 2862.50 ± 174.50 ng h mL-1. Furthermore, we discovered a physiological association of OA with serum albumin and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL). UV absorption spectra showed conformational changes in serum albumin due to the formation of an adduct with OA. Additionally, we demonstrated that TRL incorporate OA, reaching a maximum concentration of 140 ng mL-1 after 2-4 hours. We conjecture that both are efficient carriers to reach target tissues and to yield high bioavailability.

ABSTRACT

Modulation of microglial response could be a target to reduce neuroinflammation associated with Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we propose that lipophilic bioactive molecules present in pomace olive oil (POO), transported in triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs), are able to modulate microglial high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSO, points) or pomace olive oil (POO, stripes). In order to prove this hypothesis, a randomized crossover postprandial trial was performed in 18 healthy young women. POO was assayed in opposition to high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSO), a common dietary oil which shares with POO an almost identical fatty acid composition but lacks certain biomolecules with recognized antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. TRLs were isolated from blood at the baseline and 2 and 4 hours postprandially and used to treat BV-2 cells to assess their ability to modulate the microglial function. We found that the intake of POO leads to the constitution of postprandial TRLs that are able to modulate the inflammatory response in microglia compared to HOSO. TRL-derived POO reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukins 1ß and 6) and nitric oxide and downregulated genes codifying for these cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in BV-2 cells. Moreover, the ingestion of POO by healthy women slightly improved glycemic control and TRL clearance throughout the postprandial phase compared to HOSO. In conclusion, we demonstrated that consuming POO results in postprandial TRLs containing lipophilic bioactive compounds capable of regulating the inflammatory response prompted by microglial activation.

ABSTRACT

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a biocompatible polymer used in maxillofacial and orthopedic applications because of its mechanical properties and chemical stability. However, this biomaterial is inert and requires surface modification to make it bioactive, enhancing implant-tissue integration and giving the material the ability to interact with the surrounding microenvironment. In this paper, surface of PEEK was activated by oxygen plasma treatment and this resulted in increasing reactivity and surface hydrophilicity. Then, a polydopamine (PDA) coating was deposited over the surface followed by biofunctionalization with an RGD peptide. The plasma effect was studied by contact angle measurements and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of PDA coating and RGD peptide. Crystallinity and phase identification were carried out through X-ray diffraction. Quantification of the immobilized peptide over the PEEK surface was reached through UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, in vitro tests with fibroblast cell line (NIH/3T3) determined the viability, attachment, spreading, and proliferation of these cells over the modified PEEK surfaces. According to the results, PEEK surfaces functionalized with peptides demonstrated an increased cellular response with each successive surface modification.

Dietary oils play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy diet. However, with the increasing number of oils available, it became a challenging task for food producers and consumers to select the best oil for their needs. In this work, an easy-to-understand nutrition quality score was created, using a model that included beneficial lipid compounds criteria according to the dietary recommendations published by international food and health organizations. The algorithm assigned points for each component of the model considering their content in each particular oil. The points were added up and the fats and oils were classified by the corresponding percentile. As a result, among the 32 edible oils that were evaluated, virgin olive oil ranked first with a score of 100. All plant oils, except for margarine and coconut oil, ranked above the 50th percentile. Receiver-operator curves and regression models showed that saturated fatty acids may be able to predict the score, and thus, the nutritional quality of the oils. In conclusion, the proposed nutritional quality score would promote healthy and nutritious food options for consumers and would provide food producers with a valuable tool to select high-quality oils for their products, ensuring that they meet the nutritional requirements.

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive and fatal form of brain cancer. Despite new advancements in treatment, the desired outcomes have not been achieved. Temozolomide (TMZ) is the first-choice treatment for the last two decades and has improved survival rates. Emerging studies have shown that targeting epigenetics in glioblastoma can be beneficial when combined with clinically used treatments. Trichostatin A (TSA), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, has anti-cancer properties in various cancers. No data concerning the TMZ and TSA relationship was shown previously in glioblastoma therefore, we aimed to determine the likely therapeutic effect of the TMZ and TSA combination in glioblastoma. The T98G and U-373 MG, glioblastoma cell lines, were used in this study. TMZ and TSA cytotoxicity and combination index were performed by MTT assay. The expression of DNA repair genes (MGMT, MLH-1, PMS2, MSH2 and MSH6) was detected using RT-PCR. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for statistical analysis. Combination index calculations revealed antagonistic effects of TMZ and TSA in terms of cytotoxicity. Antagonistic effects were more apparent in the T98G cell line, which is expressing MGMT relatively higher. MGMT and DNA Mismatch Repair (MMR) genes were upregulated in the T98G cell line, whereas downregulated in the U373-MG cell lines under TMZ and TSA combination treatment. It is concluded that MGMT might be playing a more active part than MMR genes in TMZ resistance to TMZ and TSA antagonism. This is the first study elucidating the TMZ and TSA relationship in cancer cell lines.

ABSTRACT

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive form of brain tumor originating from glial cells with a maximum life expectancy of 14.6 months. Despite the establishment of multiple promising therapies, the clinical outcome of glioblastoma patients is abysmal. Drug resistance has been identified as a major factor contributing to the failure of current multimodal therapy. Epigenetic modification, especially DNA methylation has been identified as a major regulatory mechanism behind glioblastoma progression. In addition, miRNAs, a class of non-coding RNA, have been found to play a role in the regulation as well as in the diagnosis of glioblastoma. The relationship between epigenetics, drug resistance, and glioblastoma progression has been clearly demonstrated. MGMT hypermethylation, leading to a lack of MGMT expression, is associated with a cytotoxic effect of TMZ in GBM, while resistance to TMZ frequently appears in MGMT non-methylated GBM. In this review, we will elaborate on known miRNAs linked to glioblastoma; their distinctive oncogenic or tumor suppressor roles; and how epigenetic modification of miRNAs, particularly via methylation, leads to their upregulation or downregulation in glioblastoma. Moreover, we will try to identify those miRNAs that might be potential regulators of MGMT expression and their role as predictors of tumor response to temozolomide treatment. Although we do not impact clinical data and survival, we open possible experimental approaches to treat GBM, although they should be further validated with clinically oriented studies.
