ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the second most cause of death among the various cancers worldwide. Recent research searching an alternative therapy for cancer treatment without or less side effects. Many studies indicated the beneficial effects of Enhalus acoroides. There has been no scientific validation on antioxidant and chemopreventive potential of ethanolic extract E. acoroides against hepatoma. To assess the hepatoprotective activity of E. acoroides (EEEA) against DEN-induced hepatoma using Wistar albino rats. Animals were distributed into five groups, each containing six rats. To Group I - control rats - normal saline given. Groups II, III, IV and V rats were injection of DEN at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight i.p. to induce liver cancer. At the commencement of 6th week, Group III rats supplemented with EEEA at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight/day upto 16 weeks. Group IV rats supplemented with EEEA for 1 week before the administration of DEN and continued till the sixteenth week. Group V supplementation of silymarin at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight at the beginning of 6th week after the injection of DEN and continued upto 16 weeks and considered as positive control rats. The efficiency of E. acoroides for its antioxidant hepatoprotective and activity evaluated in rats against DEN-induced liver damage. The hepatoprotective ability of EEEA at a dose of 200 mg/kg was examined against DEN at a dose of 100 mg/kg/b.w. induced hepatotoxicity and analysed by evaluating serum liver and kidney marker levels, lipid profile (TG, HDL, LDL and total cholesterol) and serum tumour markers (DNA, RNA, AFP and CEA). Supplementation of EEEA to DEN treated rats was determined by evaluating various antioxidant biomarkers (SOD, CAT, GPx, GSH, Vit E and Vit C). Histopathological studies and morphometric gross analysis were also support the consequences of this study. A significant improvement of antioxidant defence and declined MDA levels within the serum of EEEA treated animals compared to the DEN-induced hepatoma. The supplementation of EEEA declined the serum liver, kidney and serum tumour marker levels and lipid profile as comparatively to Group I rats. The histopathological changes were changed on supplementation of EEEA demonstrating its protecting effects on hepatocytes as comparatively to Group I rats. Our significances recognized that crude extract (ethanol) of E. acoroides revealed a potential impact against DEN-induced hepatoma and assists as a superior choice for chemopreventive treatments.

ABSTRACT

Background: The energy-constrained heterogeneous nodes are the most challenging wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for developing energy-aware clustering schemes. Although various clustering approaches are proven to minimise energy consumption and delay and extend the network lifetime by selecting optimum cluster heads (CHs), it is still a crucial challenge. Methods: This article proposes a genetic algorithm-based energy-aware multi-hop clustering (GA-EMC) scheme for heterogeneous WSNs (HWSNs). In HWSNs, all the nodes have varying initial energy and typically have an energy consumption restriction. A genetic algorithm determines the optimal CHs and their positions in the network. The fitness of chromosomes is calculated in terms of distance, optimal CHs, and the node's residual energy. Multi-hop communication improves energy efficiency in HWSNs. The areas near the sink are deployed with more supernodes far away from the sink to solve the hot spot problem in WSNs near the sink node. Results: Simulation results proclaim that the GA-EMC scheme achieves a more extended network lifetime network stability and minimises delay than existing approaches in heterogeneous nature.

ABSTRACT

The evolution the novel corona virus disease (COVID-19) as a pandemic has inflicted several thousand deaths per day endangering the lives of millions of people across the globe. In addition to thermal scanning mechanisms, chest imaging examinations provide valuable insights to the detection of this virus, diagnosis and prognosis of the infections. Though Chest CT and Chest X-ray imaging are common in the clinical protocols of COVID-19 management, the latter is highly preferred, attributed to its simple image acquisition procedure and mobility of the imaging mechanism. However, Chest X-ray images are found to be less sensitive compared to Chest CT images in detecting infections in the early stages. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based framework to enhance the diagnostic values of these images for improved clinical outcomes. It is realized as a variant of the conventional SqueezeNet classifier with segmentation capabilities, which is trained with deep features extracted from the Chest X-ray images of a standard dataset for binary and multi class classification. The binary classifier achieves an accuracy of 99.53% in the discrimination of COVID-19 and Non COVID-19 images. Similarly, the multi class classifier performs classification of COVID-19, Viral Pneumonia and Normal cases with an accuracy of 99.79%. This model called the COVID-19 Super pixel SqueezNet (COVID-SSNet) performs super pixel segmentation of the activation maps to extract the regions of interest which carry perceptual image features and constructs an overlay of the Chest X-ray images with these regions. The proposed classifier model adds significant value to the Chest X-rays for an integral examination of the image features and the image regions influencing the classifier decisions to expedite the COVID-19 treatment regimen.

CONTEXT: Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases. Abnormal changes in cardiovascular responses to exercise indicate the alteration in autonomic activity in obese. AIMS: To assess and compare the cardiovascular parameters before and after exercise among obese and nonobese adult males. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty each obese and normal-weight males between the age group 18-45 years were selected as cases and controls, respectively. Heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), corrected QT intervals were measured before and after submaximal treadmill exercise (QT and QTc) were done according to Bruce protocol. HR, SBP, DBP, MAP, QT, and QTc were also measured during passive recovery at 1 min and 5 min after exercise. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: One-way analysis of variance and t-test were used to assess changes before and after exercise. RESULTS: Resting HR was significantly higher in obese when compared to nonobese (P < 0.05). SBP, DBP, MAP, QT, and QTc were significantly higher in obese when compared to nonobese (P < 0.001). Immediately after exercise HR, SBP, DBP, MAP, QT, and QTc were significantly higher in obese when compared to nonobese (P < 0.001) 1 min after exercise. CONCLUSIONS: Obese individuals had elevated resting cardiovascular parameters and showed increased responses to steady exercise which could be due to alteration in autonomic functions with sympathetic hyperactivity. Delayed rate of decrease in HR and BP after exercise was also observed in obese, which indicates that they are at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We aimed at evaluating the predictive value of amniotic fluid index ≤5 on perinatal outcome in terms of effect on cardiotocography, mode of delivery, meconium in liquor, birth weight, fetal distress, APGAR score at birth and neonatal admission to ICU. METHODS: This is a prospective study of 308 antenatal women admitted to labor ward of MIMS during February 2014-December 2015 with gestational ages between 34 and 41 weeks. All women enrolled were subjected to history taking, examination, AFI estimation and compared between those with AFI ≤5 from rest. RESULTS: The non-reactive CTG, cesarean section rate due to fetal distress, low birth weight, APGAR score <7 and NICU admission were significantly high among those with oligoamnios than the control group. CONCLUSION: Oligoamnios has a significant correlation with adverse perinatal outcome.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical results of three techniques of hysterectomy- abdominal hysterectomy (AH), non-descent vaginal hysterectomy (NDVH), and laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH). METHODS: A simple prospective randomized study was performed in a tertiary care centre between June 2011 and Dec 2012, among 150 consecutive women indicated to undergo hysterectomy for benign and mobile uterine conditions. They were randomly assigned 50 each to three routes of hysterectomy; (abdominal, vaginal, and laparoscopic-assisted vaginal). Outcome measures including operating time, blood loss, rate of complications, consumption of analgesics, and length of hospital stay were assessed and compared between groups. RESULTS: As far as duration of operation, mean blood loss, analgesic requirement, length of hospital stay, P value was significant. Incidence of complications is least among VH group. CONCLUSION: Vaginal hysterectomy is the gold standard in the era of minimal access surgery. Some of the contraindications to VH can be overcome by assistance of laparoscope and a potential abdominal hysterectomy can be converted to a vaginal procedure.

ABSTRACT

A new hemoglobin variant, termed hemoglobin Athens-Georgia, has been found in a 23-year-old Caucasian student and three members of her family. The electrophoretic mobility of this variant at pH 9.0 is slightly less than that of hemoglobin-A. Arginyl residue in position 40 of the beta chain, corresponding to position 6 of the C helix, has been replaced by a lysyl residue. This amino acid substitution is at the alpha1-beta2 contact and slightly affects the oxygen binding properties of the hemoglobin molecule. Hemoglobin Athens-Georgia has an increased affinity for oxygen, a normal heme-heme interaction and a normal Bohr effect. Hematological abnormalities are not associated with this variant.

ABSTRACT

Hb-Alberta has been found in a 51 year old Caucasian male with erythrocytosis. The substitution in this variant involves the glutamyl residue in position 101(G3) of the beta chain which is replaced by a glycyl residue. Hb-Alberta accounts for about 45% in the heterozygote, and readily forms hybrid tetramers with other hemoglobins. The oxygen affinity of Hb-Alberta is greatly increased, its Bohr effect reduced, and its subunit interaction greatly diminished.
