ABSTRACT

Dental erosion is frequently overlooked in clinical practice. The management of erosion-induced damage to the dentition is often delayed, such that extensive occlusal rehabilitation is required. These cases can be diagnosed by a careful clinical examination and a thorough review of the patient's medical history and/or lifestyle habits. This case report presents the diagnosis, categorization, and management of a case of gastro-esophageal reflux disease-induced palatal erosion of the maxillary teeth. The early management of such cases is of utmost importance to delay or prevent the progression of damage both to the dentition and to occlusal stability. Non-invasive adhesively bonded restorations aid in achieving this goal.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patient demand for tooth colored restorations and desire for minimally invasive restorations have made composites an indispensable part of the restorative process. An important factor affecting the intra-oral performance of composite restorations is bonding. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninty six freshly extracted molar teeth were collected and occlusal 3mm is removed using a diamond disc to expose dentine. Following with samples were divided in to two main groups (self-etch & total etch). Each main group is again sub divided in to three groups each according to bonding agent used (Tetric N- Bond Universal, Single Bond Universal, Tetric N Bond Total etch in total etch group and Clear Fill SE in self etch group). Following which bonding protocol is followed according to manufacture instructions, a composite buildup of 2x3 mm is done on each specimen and then specimen were subjected to shear bond test under universal testing machine. All the readings were noted and subjected to statistical analysis using One way ANOVA and Tukey's posthoc test. RESULTS: It showed that there is no significant difference among the groups in both self-etch and total etch modes. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that application of an etching step prior to Universal Adhesives significantly improves their dentine penetration pattern, although this does not affect their mean SBS. The bond strength values of the TBU regardless of application mode were comparable to SBU making them reliable for working under different clinical conditions. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: With the advent of new technology in material sciences in recent years, the quality of composite resin restorations has improved; however, discolouration and wear of composite resin materials remains to be a major problem in long-term clinical studies. AIM: The aim of the present study was to compare the colour stability and surface hardness of methacrylate based flowable nano composite with methacrylate based packable nano composite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The difference in colour stability and microhardness of the three composites: G aenial Universal Flo (GC India), Filtek Z350XT (3MESPE) and Tetric N Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent) were evaluated. Forty eight disc shaped specimens were made out of three different resin composite materials which were subdivided into two groups of Colour Stability (CS) and Vicker's Hardness (VH). For colour stability, specimens were immersed in staining solution consisting instant coffee for 72 hours, and then specimens were rinsed thoroughly under tap water and subjected to 10 strokes of brushing with a soft-grade toothbrush. The colour measurements were obtained using spectrophotometer and the process was repeated every 72 hours for three weeks. VH was evaluated using microhardness tester (Zwick/Roell Vicker's Microhardness Tester). Vicker's Hardness Numbers (VHN) were determined from indentations made under 10 N load for 15 seconds by the arithmetic mean of three indentation values randomly performed. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc analysis were applied. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference was found in comparison of colour stability at different time interval in study groups (p<0.001). Filtek Z350XT group showed least discolouration followed by Tetric N Ceram group and highest colour change in G aenial Universal Flo group after immersion for 21 days. Mean microhardness value of Filtek Z350XT (101.62) group was found to be significantly different from Tetric N Ceram group (63.74) (p<0.001*) and G aenial Universal Flo group (56.75) (p<0.001*). CONCLUSION: Greatest CS and VH was seen in Filtek Z350XT followed by Tetric N Ceram and least values were seen in G aenial Universal Flo.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Complete cleaning and shaping of root canal system is of paramount importance to achieve a successful root canal treatment. There are various rotary Ni-Ti systems available in the market to achieve mechanical goal of root canal preparation. But aggressive preparation of root canal with such systems would result in canal transportation and excess root dentin removal that would be one of the major reasons to decide the prognosis of root canal treated tooth. AIM: The present study was conducted to compare the root canal preparation in terms of canal transportation and volumetric changes in the root canal dentin among three Ni-Ti file systems, namely Mtwo, ProTaper (PT) and ProTaper NEXT (PTN) file system, using Computed Tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 45 mesiobuccal root canals of extracted first molar teeth with completely formed root apices and angle of curvature ranging between 10°- 35° were selected. These teeth were randomly divided into three experimental groups containing 15 teeth each, based on rotary system used. Group-I: Mtwo files, Group-II: PT files and Group-III: PTN files. Pre-instrumentation CT images were obtained at three cross-sectional planes - 3mm, 7mm and 11mm from apical end of the root. Similarly, post-instrumentation images were obtained. Shortest distance from the edge of the canal to the periphery of the root was analyzed by using Analysis of Variance. RESULTS: All three file systems tested in the present study presented similar behaviour with respect to the root canal transportation. Lesser canal transportation was recorded in Mtwo. But no statistically significant difference was seen in terms of canal transportation and volume of dentin removed between all three rotary systems (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Mtwo, PT and PTN rotary systems have similar behaviour with respect to canal transportation and volume of dentin removed.
