ABSTRACT

Introduction: Physical attractiveness, productivity, religiosity, meaningfulness, and relationships are important characteristics of successful aging. To maintain psychological flexibility, acceptance and values-directed interventions have been effective in managing difficulties with aging. Objectives: The present paper aimed to investigate body acceptance and individual values in healthy individuals over the age of 50 living in Austria. Methods: In addition to sociodemographic variables, subjective age, attractiveness, and desire for body changes were assessed in our survey. The Austrian Value Questionnaire was used to record values, and the German Version of the Quality of Marriage scale assessed partnership quality. Data from 187 older adults were recruited via snowball sampling. Analyses were performed in SPSS and R, using a structural equation modeling approach. Results: The results indicate that as age increases and subjective attractiveness decreases, body acceptance declines. Materialism seems to support the desire for cosmetic surgery (ß = .230, p = .016). A negative association between conservatism and changes in desires for body change (ß = -.221, p = .044) suggests that greater value commitment and conservative attitudes are related to fewer change desires. Conclusion: These findings underpin the necessity for encouraging individuals early on to be in touch with their values to promote psychological flexibility.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined whether compliance with anti-pandemic measures during the COVID-19 pandemic relates to (a) importance of the fulfillment of core psychological needs, namely, relationship, self-esteem, efficacy, and pleasure; (b) coping behavior styles, namely, surrender, self-soothing, divert attention, and confrontation; and (c) worries or concerns beyond COVID-19 which may impair wellbeing. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design and online survey data from responses to a structured questionnaire developed within the theoretical framework of schema-based psychotherapy on psychological needs and coping behavior styles from 740 participants in Central Europe and West Africa. RESULTS: Analysis indicated that people with the psychological needs of "pleasure" and "efficacy" and the coping style of "surrender" were more likely to comply with anti-pandemic measures. We also found that people with the coping style of "confrontation" were less likely to comply. There were no statistically significant relationships between compliance and "relationship," "self-esteem," "self-soothing," "divert attention," and "existential concerns." DISCUSSION: Our findings indicate that how likely a given individual is to comply with prescribed pandemic countermeasures varies based on their specific psychological needs and behavior styles. Therefore, to control contagion during a pandemic, authorities must recognize the relevance of human need fulfillment and their behavior styles and accordingly highlight and encourage admissible and feasible actions. The findings demonstrate that some individual differences in core psychological needs and coping behavior patterns predict compliance behavior.

ABSTRACT

An imbalance between energy input and energy needs contributes to the growing incidence of overweight children. Pre-schoolers normally like to move, but even at this young age, they are already affected by a lack of physical activity and a high amount of screen time. Media consumption contributes to unhealthy diets and extends the length of time spent sitting. Longer periods of sitting are, independent of the level of activity, seen as a risk factor for the development of obesity. In the present study, 160 pre-schoolers and their parents (128 mothers, 121 fathers) were examined. The results show deviations from actual recommendations regarding physical activity, time spent sitting, dietary intake, and media consumption. Increased screen time was associated with a higher weight status among pre-school-aged children. To provide a healthy upbringing, prevention and intervention measures should be implemented on a behavioral and relational level.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Informal family care is an essential pillar of the healthcare system whilst informal caregivers face the huge challenge of coordinating family, the care situation as well as their employment. OBJECTIVE: This article describes care situations, associated burdens, challenges and desired support measures experienced by university staff. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 75 people who are currently caring for or have in the past cared for a relative, participated in the online survey. RESULTS: Informal care, often undertaken at short notice for family members, consumes a lot of time and requires a high amount of flexibility. In 64% of the reported cases the care situation lasted for more than 1 year, while being concealed by one third of the respondents and thus leading to a high risk of burnout. CONCLUSION: Informal caregivers need support within the social and professional environment by creating an awareness of this growing and unspoken topic.

ABSTRACT

The biopsychosocial model represents a very important theoretical framework developed in the 21th century. According to a body mind unity theory, it postulates that research must focus not only on biomedical but also on other aspects in order to understand complex interactions occurring on different system levels. With regard to the occurrence of melanoma, both immunologic surveillance and a lack of cancerogenic factors are crucial in the suppression of tumor development. In addition, a reduction in mental stress (employing effective strategies for coping with stress) in cases of malignant disease seems to prolong life. Focusing on these theories, examples of studies that followed an interdisciplinary, biopsychosocial approach to melanoma research conducted at one center are given to emphasize the multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary aspects of the biopsychosocial model.

ABSTRACT

Work-related stress has been identified as a relevant problem leading to negative effects on health and quality of life. Using data from 844 nurses, latent profile analyses (LPA) were applied to identify distinct patterns of work stress. Several sociodemographic variables, including nurses' working and living conditions, as well as nurses' reactions to workload, were considered to predict respondents' profile membership. LPA revealed three distinct profiles that can be distinguished by a low, moderate, and higher stress level. Being financially secure is positively related to the low stress profile, whereas working in an urban area and having low job satisfaction increases the chance of belonging to the higher stress profile. Our results can be used as a basis to develop interventions to create a healthy nursing home environment by supporting the balance between family and work, providing access to job resources and optimizing recovery opportunities.

ABSTRACT

The daily routine of nurses in long term care units is characterized by a variety of physical and psychological burdens. This study is dedicated to work load, burnout, health and coping of this target group. Registered nurses were surveyed in two federal states of Austria, namely in Vienna (n = 78) and Carinthia (n = 59). The individuals of the, on average, older Viennese sample who often feel destined for this occupation face younger colleagues from rural areas whose motivations are predominantly pro-social and economic. The results show an alarming proportion of emotional exhaustion (23%) and aversion to residents (17%). The participants felt particularly burdened by work conditions and the old people they are caring for. Carinthian nurses estimated their state of health to be better than that of their Viennese colleagues. The Viennese sample was found to be significantly more discontent than the Carinthian one. The study underlines the high risk of burnout for nurses in long term care units.
