ABSTRACT

39,606 pathological reports issuing from the Department of Pathology, University of Vienna, during the years 1936, 1956 and 1976 were examined retrospectively. The Department of Maxillo-facial Surgery had referred 3.2% of the specimens. On analysis of the individual diagnoses, carcinoma was represented by 36.6% of the cases. Age, sex, distribution and tumour localization data are recorded in tabular form. In addition, data concerning in-patients treated for tumours at the Department of Maxillo-facial Surgery from 1974 to 1976 were stored in the Computer Centre of the University of Vienna. These data were subsequently analysed with regard to diagnosis, sex and average age of the patients.

ABSTRACT

A new clot-suturing Technique (using high-concentration fibrinogen solutions) for water-tight closure of the dura is reported. Six dogs underwent laminectomy of the thoracic spine with medial longitudinal incision in the chordal dura. After the dural split had been sealed with natural tissue adhesive and closure of the wound in layers, the animals were sacrificed at intervals of 1 to 21 days postoperatively and the chordal segments involved were removed and histologically examined. Early fibrinolysis of the clot was prevented by adding a natural proteinase inhibitor and factor XIII concentrate to the clotting substances. Histological analysis showed that healing was almost complete after 2 weeks, with delicate connective tissue overgrowing the dural split. After complete reabsorption of fibrin, the originally abundant absorbent granulation tissue had largely disappeared. Among the satisfactory results of fibrin suturing are optimum healing tendency in the fibrin-sutured region, absence of tissue irritation and neurotoxicity, which are known attributes of the synthetic alkl-cyano-acrylate tissue adhesives.

ABSTRACT

50% of patients with periodontopathy, exhibited the presence of amyloid in the clinically-altered gums. The biopsy specimen of the gums was examined microscopically by means of the crossed polar method. Seemingly-normal gum biopsies were, in all cases, amyloid positive. Amyloid was detected in two out of ten cases of healthy mucosa libera of the cheek. It was assumed that this deposition of amyloid was the consequence of a locally-limited pathological process. These results cast doubt on the possibility of tracing the pericollagenic form of general amyloidosis through gingival biopsy. An alternative procedure would be to biopsy the mucosa libera of the cheek.

ABSTRACT

Analysis of the 139 patients suffering from carcinoma of the tongue treated at the Klinik für Kieferchirurgie der Universität Wien between 1960 and 1970. In comparison with other studies, sex distribution, age distribution, etiological factors were gone into, methods of treatment were described and the results and prognoses indicated. A five year survival rate of 45.1% was found in patients operated on exclusively, which is considered favorable also in comparison with statements in the literature.

ABSTRACT

In order to quantify the blood flow conditions of the mobilized anterior maxillary fragment after an operation to correct severe maxillary prognathism, maxillary blood flow measurements were carried out using the washout of the inert, radioactive tracer. Xenon-133. It shows that post-operative blood flow is not decreased.
