ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The pandemic profoundly stressed nursing practice and could have thereby affected trends in nurse-sensitive quality indicators (NSIs), measures that detect changes in patient health status directly affected by nursing care. OBJECTIVES: To determine if NSIs have worsened in response to the pandemic and then returned to pre-pandemic levels using data from 2019 through 2022. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study of annual trends, examining unit data from the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) from 2019 through 2022 for five indicators: rates of falls, central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI), and ventilator-associated events (VAE). The NDNQI is the largest repository of nursing quality indicators, which are derived from patient-level events, reported at the nursing unit level, and submitted quarterly by over 2,000 member hospitals. Adult medical-surgical or critical care inpatient nursing units with complete data for the 4 years were included, with samples ranging from 456 to 5,818 nursing units in 2,346 hospitals. Analysis of variance was conducted by comparing the 2019 rates to each subsequent year. RESULTS: In decreasing order of prevalence, the mean pre-pandemic rates were 6.58 VAE per 1,000 ventilator days (critical care only), 2.41 HAPI per 1,000 device days, 2.20 falls per 1,000 patient days, 0.96 CAUTI per 1,000 catheter days, and 0.68 CLABSI per 1,000 central line days, for medical-surgical and critical care units combined. The rates for all five nurse-sensitive indicators increased significantly beginning in 2020 and have begun to decline but have not returned to baseline by 2022. The maximum rate was observed in 2020 for falls and 2021 for the remaining indicators. These increases to the maximum ranged from a 12% percent increase in CAUTI to 49% for CLABSI. DISCUSSION: NSIs increased during the pandemic and are now returning to baseline. The pandemic underscored the importance of nursing practice. The pandemic's enduring negative effects on the nursing workforce must be addressed to preserve patient safety.

ABSTRACT

Plants used in traditional medicine offer an affordable new alternative in tissue repair therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the 5% Rhizophora mangle cream compared to the 5% dexpanthenol cream in healing open surgical wounds on the upper eyelid. A total of 18 patients were submitted to the experiment and divided into 2 groups with 9 patients each who used topically and daily 5% dexpanthenol cream (control group) or 5% R.mangle cream (intervention group) for 7 days. Clinical, morphometric and histomorphometric analyses of wounds and surgical procedures for skin removal were performed. In the morphometric analysis, all wounds treated with R.mangle and dexpanthenol creams showed complete macroscopic scars, without inflammatory signs and infection free. The skin hydration values in pre and post application periods of the cream were 43.82 ± 43.93 and 62.12 ± 67.40 respectively. The histomorphometric study showed lower values of epithelium distance in R. mangle group and higher in dexpanthenol group with significant difference between groups (p < 0.05). The R.mangle 5% cream proved to be effective in healing wounds of human upper eyelid skin with a significant improvement in epithelization compared to dexpanthenol 5% cream.

ABSTRACT

This work reports the construction of an HIV-specific genosensor through the modification of carbon screen-printed electrodes (CSPE) with graphene quantum dots decorated with L-cysteine and gold nanoparticles (cys-GQDs/AuNps). Cys-GQDs were characterized by FT-IR and UV-vis spectra and electronic properties of the modified electrodes were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modification of the electrode surface with cys-GQDs and AuNps increased the electrochemical performance of the electrode, improving the electron transfer of the anionic redox probe [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- on the electrochemical platform. When compared to the bare surface, the modified electrode showed a 1.7 times increase in effective electrode area and a 29 times decrease in charge transfer resistance. The genosensor response was performed by differential pulse voltammetry, monitoring the current response of the anionic redox probe, confirmed with real genomic RNA samples, making it possible to detect 1 fg/mL. In addition, the genosensor maintained its response for 60 days at room temperature. This new genosensor platform for early detection of HIV, based on the modification of the electrode surface with cys-GQDs and AuNps, discriminates between HIV-negative and positive samples, showing a low detection limit, as well as good specificity and stability, which are relevant properties for commercial application of biosensors.

ABSTRACT

Fungi are the main microorganisms responsible for the spoilage of bakery products, and their control and subsequent reduction of food waste are significant concerns in the agri-food industry. Synthetic preservatives are still the most used compounds to reduce bakery product spoilage. On the other hand, studies have shown that biopreservation can be an attractive approach to overcoming food and feed spoilage and increasing their shelf-life. However, limited studies show the preservation effects on real food matrices. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts on the growth of spoilage filamentous fungi (molds) on bread and panettones. In general, on conventional and multigrain bread, treatments containing Limosilactobacillus fermentum IAL 4541 and Wickerhamomyces anomalus IAL 4533 showed similar results when compared to the negative control (calcium propionate) in delaying the fungal growth of the tested species (Aspergillus chevalieri, Aspergillus montevidensis, and Penicillium roqueforti). Different from bread, treatments with W. anomallus in panettones delayed the A. chevalieri growth up to 30 days, 13 days longer than observed on negative control (without preservatives). This study showed that biopreservation is a promising method that can extend bakery products' shelf-life and be used as an alternative to synthetic preservatives.

ABSTRACT

In equine ophthalmology, ulcerative keratitis is among the most common conditions and, in general, arises as a consequence of some trauma suffered. Secondarily, subsequent contamination by pathogenic or resident bacteria of the horse's ocular microbiota may have undesirable consequences. Under physiological conditions, the normal microbiota coexists with the immune status of the host, serving as a barrier, ensuring the health of the ocular surface, and inhibiting the proliferation of pathogens. However, in the imbalance of immune barriers, the normal microbiota can become pathogenic and lead to infection, acting as an opportunistic agent. The present study aims to demonstrate the antimicrobial effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), its time of action, and its correlation with the concentration of its same components in vitro on Staphylococcus sciuri, a bacterium with high prevalence in the normal ocular microbiota of horses in the municipality of Minas Gerais. For the preparation of the PRP, eight adult Quarter Horse (QH) horses were used. The individual PRP was prepared by the double centrifugation protocol, and then, the PRPs were added to a pool, followed by testing their interaction in culture with Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth at different dilutions against five strains collected from different animals. After 3, 6, 12, and 18 hours, the colony formation units (CFU) count on a 5% horse blood agar plate was evaluated for each time point. Our study showed that Staphylococcus sciuri, the resident microorganism of the ocular conjunctival microbiota of horses, is more susceptible when compared to the standard strain "American Type Culture Collection" (ATCC-29213) Staphylococcus aureus, a pathogenic microorganism, which was used for the validation of our study. The antibacterial effect shown in this study was bacteriostatic for up to 6 hours. The most concentrated PRP dilutions, 1 : 1 and 1 : 2, were also most effective, suggesting that the antibacterial effect is volume dependent.

AIMS: To investigate whether the obesity associated to T2DM presented cardiomyocyte myocardial contractility dysfunction due to damage in Ca2+ handling, concomitantly with increased biomarkers of oxidative stress. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups: control (C): fed with standard diet; and obese (Ob) that fed a saturated high-fat. After the characterization of obesity (12 weeks), the Ob animals were submitted to T2DM induction with a single dose of intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozotocin (30 mg/kg). Thus, remained Ob rats that were characterized as to the presence (T2DMOb; n = 8) and/or absence (Ob; n = 10) of T2DM. Cardiac remodeling was measured by post-mortem morphological, isolated cardiomyocyte contractile function, as well as by intracellular Ca2+-handling analysis. RESULTS: T2DMOb presented a significant reduction of all fat pads, total body fat and adiposity index. T2DMOb group presented a significant increase in protein carbonylation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, respectively. T2DMOb promoted elevations in fractional shortening (15.6 %) and time to 50 % shortening (5.8 %), respectively. Time to 50 % Ca2+ decay was prolonged in T2DMOb, suggesting a possible impairment in Ca2+recapture and/or removal. CONCLUSION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus in obesity promotes prolongation of cardiomyocyte contractile function with protein carbonylation damage and impaired Ca2+ handling.

ABSTRACT

Fusarium cerealis is a causal agent of Fusarium Head Blight in wheat, and it produces both deoxynivalenol (DON) and nivalenol (NIV). Nevertheless, the effect of environmental factors on the growth and mycotoxin production of this species has not been studied so far. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of environmental factors on the growth and mycotoxin production of F. cerealis strains. All strains were able to grow in a wide range of water activity (aW) and temperatures, but their mycotoxin production was influenced by strain and environmental factors. NIV was produced at high aW and temperatures, while optimal conditions for DON production were observed at low aW. Interestingly, some strains were able to simultaneously produce both toxins, which could pose a more significant risk for grain contamination.

ABSTRACT

Late-Life Depression (LLD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in elderly, causing significant functional impairments. MicroRNAs are small molecules involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Elderly individuals diagnosed with LLD present down regulation of miR-184 (hsa-miR-184) expression compared to healthy patients. Therefore, this miR-184 can be used as a biomarker to diagnose LLD. Current LLD diagnosis depends primarily on clinical subjective identification, based on symptoms and variable scales. This work introduces a novel and facile approach for the LLD diagnosis based on the development of an electrochemical genosensor for miR-184 detection in plasma, using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). DPV results presented a 2-Fold increase in current value for healthy patients, compared to individuals with LLD when monitoring ethidium bromide oxidation peak. For EIS, a 1.5-fold increase in charge transfer resistance for healthy elderly subjects was observed in comparison with depressed patients. In addition, the analytical performance of the biosensor was evaluated using DPV, obtaining a linear response ranging from 10-9 mol L-1 to 10-17 mol L-1 of miR-184 in plasma and a detection limit of 10 atomoles L-1. The biosensor presented reusability, selectivity and stability, the current response remained 72% up to 50 days of storage. Thus, the genosensor proved to be efficient in the diagnosis of LLD, as well as the accurate quantification of miR-184 in real plasma samples of healthy and depressed patients.

OBJECTIVES: To use growth data from electronic health records to describe and model infant growth (weight velocity and peak body mass index [pBMI]) characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: We extracted data from all children born at ≥34 weeks of gestation within one health system between 2014 and 2017. After excluding implausible growth data with an algorithm created for childhood growth, we estimated pBMI, peak weight and length velocities, and the odds of obesity at 2 years, adjusted for race, sex, ethnicity, and birth weight, by the magnitude of peak weight velocity, peak length velocity, and pBMI. RESULTS: Among 6425 children (41% White, 28% Black, 26% other race; 16% Hispanic ethnicity), mean pBMI was 17.9 kg/m2 (SD 1.5) and mean age at pBMI was 9.6 months (SD 2.7). Mean peak weight velocity was 949 g (SD 165) per 2 weeks, and the mean peak length velocity was 3.4 cm (SD 0.3) per 2 weeks. Children with obesity at 2 years (n = 931, 14.5%) were more likely to be Hispanic, had greater peak weight and peak length velocities, and had 2 kg/m2 greater magnitude of pBMI than children without obesity. For each unit increase in pBMI, children had more than 4 times greater odds of obesity at age 2 years. CONCLUSIONS: In a large sample of infants with clinical growth data tracked via electronic health records, we found associations between the magnitude and timing of peak infant BMI and obesity at 2 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Children with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in low-income and middle-income countries rarely survive. The Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Association of Central America (AHOPCA) developed the AHOPCA-ALL REC 2014 protocol to improve outcomes in resource-constrained settings without access to stem cell transplantation. METHODS: The AHOPCA-ALL REC 2014 protocol was based on a modified frontline induction phase 1A, a consolidation therapy with six modified R-blocks derived from the ALL-Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster REZ 2002 protocol and intermittent maintenance therapy. Children with B-lineage ALL were eligible after a late medullary relapse, an early or late combined relapse, or any extramedullary relapses. Those with T-lineage ALL were eligible after early and late extramedullary relapses, as were those with both B-lineage and T-lineage relapses occurring at least 3 months after therapy abandonment. RESULTS: The study population included 190 patients with T-lineage (n = 3) and B-lineage (n = 187) ALL. Of those with B-lineage ALL, 25 patients had a very early extramedullary relapse, 40 had an early relapse (32 extramedullary and 8 combined), and 125 had a late relapse (34 extramedullary, 19 combined, and 72 medullary). The main cause of treatment failure was second relapse (52.1%). The 3-year event-free survival rate (± standard error) was 25.9% ± 3.5%, and the 3-year overall survival rate was 36.7% ± 3.8%. The 3-year event-free survival rate was 47.2% ± 4.7% for late relapses. The most frequently reported toxicity was grade 3 or 4 infection. Mortality during treatment occurred in 17 patients (8.9%), in most cases because of infectious complications. CONCLUSIONS: Selected children with relapsed ALL in Central America can be cured with second-line regimens even without access to consolidation with stem cell transplantation. Children in low-income and middle-income countries who have lower risk relapses of ALL should be treated with curative intent.

ABSTRACT

This work reports the construction of a novel nanostructured immunosensor for detection of the troponin I biomarker (cTnI). Anti-troponin I antibody was anchored on the modified graphite electrode with reduced graphene oxide and polytyramine for detection of troponin I in serum samples. The performance of the electro-immunosensor was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry. The immunosensor presented a wide work range, from 4 ng mL-1 to 4 pg mL-1 , whose detection limit (4 pg mL-1 ) is significantly lower than the basal level in human serum, and maintained 100% of response after 30 days of storage. Moreover, the immunosensor showed good selectivity for detection of cTnI in real sample containing interfering substances and specificity of response to cTnI in the serum of healthy and sick patients, and demonstrated the possibility of reuse for two consecutive analyses, in addition to using a simplified and inexpensive platform when compared to other devices, demonstrating them excellent potential for application in diagnosis in the early stages of acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, has been a major public health problem worldwide in the last 2 years. SARS-CoV-2-dependent activation of innate immune receptors contributes to the strong local and systemic inflammatory reaction associated with rapid disease evolution. The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of Spike (S) viral protein (S-RBD) is essential for virus infection and its interacting molecules in target cells are still under identification. On the other hand, the search for accessible natural molecules with potential therapeutic use has been intense and remains an active field of investigation. METHODS: C57BL6/J (control) and Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4-deficient (Lps del) mice were nebulized with recombinant S-RBD. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin (IL)-6 production in bronchoalveolar lavages (BALs) was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Lung-infiltrating cells recovered in BALs were quantified by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stain. In selected groups of animals, the natural compound Jacareubin or dexamethasone were intraperitoneally (ip) administered 2 hours before nebulization. RESULTS: A rapid lung production of TNF-α and IL-6 and cell infiltration was induced by S-RBD nebulization in control but not in Lps del mice. Pre-treatment with Jacareubin or dexamethasone prevented S-RBD-induced TNF-α and IL-6 secretion in BALs from control animals. CONCLUSIONS: S-RBD domain promotes lung TNF-α and IL-6 production in a TLR4-dependent fashion in C57BL6/J mice. Xanthone Jacareubin possesses potential anti-COVID-19 properties that, together with the previously tested anti-inflammatory activity, safety, and tolerance, make it a valuable drug to be further investigated for the treatment of cytokine production caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the maximum in vitro flow rate of 6 types of polyurethane over-the-wire double lumen catheters using both ports, for high volume fluid resuscitation in large animal species. SETTINGS: University teaching hospital. DESIGN: Prospective in vitro experimental study. INTERVENTIONS: The flow rate of both ports of 6 polyurethane double lumen over-the-wire catheters (11 and 13-Fr, 15 and 20 cm long, elliptical and tapered tip designs) and 2 types of infusion (with or without pressure bags) were tested on a factorial scheme (6 × 2) in triplicate, using commercial isotonic crystalloid (0.9% NaCl) and synthetic colloid (6% Hydroxyethyl starch, 130/0.4). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Flow rates were influenced by catheter diameter, length, tip design and presence or absence of pressure bags (P < 0.05). Mean flow rates during non-pressurized 0.9% NaCl infusion ranged from 584 mL/min (35 L/h; 11-Fr x 15 cm x tapered tip catheter) to 905 mL/min (54 L/h; 13-Fr x 15 cm x elliptical tip catheter). Mean flow rates during non-pressurized synthetic colloid infusion varied from 404 mL/min (24 L/h; 11-Fr x 15 cm x tapered tip catheter) to 724 mL/min (43 L/h; 13-Fr x 15 cm x elliptical tip catheter). Mean flow rates during pressurized infusion were 1.72 and 2.02 times greater than those obtained by gravity alone for 0.9% NaCl and synthetic colloid, respectively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Highest in vitro flow rates were achieved when larger diameter, shorter and elliptical tip catheters were used during 0.9% NaCl infusion. Catheter diameter, tip design but not length influenced the flow rate during synthetic colloid infusion. The use of pressure bags significantly increased the flow rate of all catheters, for both solutions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics hypertension Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG), compared with the previous guideline ("Fourth Report"), on the frequency of hypertensive blood pressure (BP) measurements in childhood and associations with hypertension in adulthood using data from the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort Consortium. STUDY DESIGN: Childhood BPs were categorized in normal, prehypertensive/elevated, and hypertensive (stage 1 and 2) ranges using the Fourth Report and the CPG. Participants were contacted in adulthood to assess self-reported hypertension. The associations between childhood hypertensive range BPs and self-reported adult hypertension were evaluated. RESULTS: Data were available for 34 014 youth (10.4 ± 3.1 years, 50.6% female) with 92 751 BP assessments. Compared with the Fourth Report, the CPG increased hypertensive readings from 7.6% to 13.5% and from 1.3% to 2.5% for stage 1 and 2 hypertensive range, respectively (P < .0001). Of 12 761 adults (48.8 ± 7.9 years, 43% male), 3839 (30.1%) had self-reported hypertension. The sensitivity for predicting adult hypertension among those with hypertensive range BPs at any point in childhood, as defined by the Fourth Report and the CPG, respectively, was 13.4% and 22.4% (specificity 92.3% and 85.9%, P < .001), with no significant impact on positive and negative predictive values. Associations with self-reported adult hypertension were similar and weak (c-statistic range 0.61-0.68) for hypertensive range BPs as defined by the Fourth Report and CPG. CONCLUSIONS: The CPG significantly increased the prevalence of childhood BPs in hypertensive ranges and improved the sensitivity, without an overall strengthened association, of predicting self-reported adult hypertension.

Severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by lung injury, cytokine storm, and increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Current therapies focus on reducing viral replication and inflammatory responses, but no specific treatment exists to prevent the development of severe COVID-19 in infected individuals. Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) is the receptor for SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, but it is also critical for maintaining the correct functionality of lung epithelium and endothelium. Coronaviruses induce activation of a disintegrin and metalloprotease 17 (ADAM17) and shedding of ACE2 from the cell surface resulting in exacerbated inflammatory responses. Thus, we hypothesized that ADAM17 inhibition ameliorates COVID-19-related lung inflammation. We employed a preclinical mouse model using intratracheal instillation of a combination of polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) and the receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (RBD-S) to mimic lung damage associated with COVID-19. Histologic analysis of inflamed mice confirmed the expected signs of lung injury including edema, fibrosis, vascular congestion, and leukocyte infiltration. Moreover, inflamed mice also showed an increased NLR as observed in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Administration of the ADAM17/MMP inhibitors apratastat and TMI-1 significantly improved lung histology and prevented leukocyte infiltration. Reduced leukocyte recruitment could be explained by reduced production of proinflammatory cytokines and lower levels of the endothelial adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Additionally, the NLR was significantly reduced by ADAM17/MMP inhibition. Thus, we propose inhibition of ADAM17/MMP as a novel promising treatment strategy in SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals to prevent the progression toward severe COVID-19.

Abstract Background: Brewer's grains, a by-product of the brewery industry, can be included in the diet of ruminants. However, its high humidity makes it difficult to store and preserve. Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of sun dehydration of wet brewer's grains (WBG) and the effect of storage period on its nutritional and microbiological quality. Methods: A completely randomized experimental design was used to evaluate WBG dehydration efficiency, with treatments corresponding to 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 hours of sun exposure. A second experiment was carried out using also a completely randomizeddesign to evaluated the effect of storage with the following treatments: 0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days of storage of the dry by-product. Results: Dry matter (DM) content linearly increased with dehydration period. The chemical composition of the dried brewer's grains had no effect as a function of storage period. Indigestible protein (C fraction) increased linearly but did not compromise the cumulative gas production and the in vitro digestibility of DM and protein. Storage time had no effect on fungus population. The maximum aflatoxin value was 45.5 μg/kg, and remained within acceptable limits for bovine feed. Conclusion: Dehydration of WBG in the sun is efficient to guarantee conservation and makes it possible to store the by- product. The storage of the dry by-product for 180 days does not compromise its nutritional or microbiological quality.


Resumen Antecedentes: Los granos de cervecería son un subproducto de la industria cervecera que puede ser incluido en la dieta de rumiantes; sin embargo, su alta húmedad dificulta el almacenamiento y conservación de ese producto. Objetivo: Evaluar la eficiencia de la deshidratación al sol de los granos húmedos de cervecería (WBG) y el efecto del período de almacenamiento sobre su calidad nutricional y microbiológica. Métodos: Para evaluar la eficiencia de la deshidratación de los WBG se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar, con tiempos de tratamiento de 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, y 16 horas de exposición al sol. En un segundo experimento, también con diseño experimental completamente al azar, se evaluó el efecto del almacenamiento comparando los siguientes tratamientos: 0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 y 180 días de almacenamiento del subproducto seco. Resultados: La materia seca (DM) del WBG presentó un efecto lineal creciente con el proceso de deshidratación. La composición química de los granos secos de cervecería no tuvo efecto en función de los tiempos de almacenamiento. La proteína no digestible (fracción C) aumentó linealmente; sin embargo, no comprometió la producción acumulativa de gas y la digestibilidad in vitro de la DM y de la proteína. El tiempo de almacenamiento no tuvo efecto sobre la población de hongos. El valor máximo de aflatoxina obtenido fue de 45,5 μg/kg y permaneció dentro de los limites aceptables para alimentación de bovinos. Conclusión: La deshidratación de WBG al sol es eficiente para garantizar la conservación del material y viabilizar su almacenamiento. El almacenamiento por 180 días de este subproducto seco no compromete su calidad nutricional y microbiológica.

Objetivo: Avaliar a eficiência de desidratação ao sol dos grãos úmidos de cervejaria (WBG) e o efeito do período de armazenamento sobre a qualidade nutricional e microbiológica. Métodos: Para avaliar a desidratação do WBG, utilizou-se um delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, sendo os tratamentos os tempos de 0 e 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 e 16 horas de exposição ao sol. Um segundo experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Os tratamentos foram 0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 e 180 dias de armazenamento do subproduto seco. Resultados: A matéria seca (DM) do WBG apresentou efeito linear crescente com o processo de desidratação. A composição química dos grãos secos de cervejaria não apresentou efeito em função dos tempos de armazenagem. A proteína indigestível (Fração C) aumentou linearmente, no entanto não comprometeu a produção cumulativa de gás e a digestibilidade in vitro da DM e da proteína. A população de fungos não apresentou efeito com o tempo de armazenamento. O valor máximo de aflatoxina obtido foi de 45,5 μg/kg e permaneceu dentro dos limites aceitáveis para a alimentação de bovinos. Conclusão: A desidratação do WBG ao sol foi eficiente em garantir a conservação do material e viabilizar o seu armazenamento. A estocagem desse subproduto seco por 180 dias não comprometeu a sua qualidade nutricional e microbiológica.

INTRODUCTION: Open access (OA) publishing often requires article processing charges (APCs). While OA provides opportunities for broader readership, authors able to afford APCs are more commonly associated with well-funded, high-income country institutions, skewing knowledge dissemination. Here, we evaluate publishing models, OA practices, and APCs in cardiology and cardiac surgery. METHODS: The InCites Journal Citation Reports 2019 directory by Clarivate Analytics was searched for "Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems" journals. Sister journals of included journals were identified. All journals were categorized as predominantly cardiology or cardiac surgery. Publishing models, APCs, and APC waivers were defined for all journals. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-one journals were identified (139 cardiology, 22 cardiac surgery). APCs ranged from $244 to $5,000 ($244-5,000 cardiology; $383-3,300 cardiac surgery), with mean $2,911±891 and median $3,000 (interquartile range [IQR]: $2,500-3,425) across 139 journals with non-zero available APCs ($2,970±890, median $3,000, IQR: $2,573-3,450, cardiology; $2,491±799, median $2,740, IQR: $2,300-3,000, cardiac surgery). Average APCs were $3,307±566 and median $3,250 (IQR: $3,000-3,500) for hybrid journals ($3,344±583, median $3,260, IQR: $3,000-3,690, cardiology; $2,983±221, median $2,975, IQR: $2,780-3,149, cardiac surgery) and $1,997±832 and median $2,100 (IQR: $1,404-2,538) for fully OA journals ($2,039±843, median $2,100, IQR: $1,419-2,604, cardiology; $1,788±805, median $2,000, IQR: $1,475-2,345, cardiac surgery). Waivers were available for 51 (86.4%) fully OA and 37 (37.4%) hybrid journals. Seventeen journals were fully OA without APCs, one journal did not yet release APCs, and four journals were subscription-only. CONCLUSION: OA publishing is common in cardiology and cardiac surgery with substantial APCs. Waivers remain limited, posing barriers for unfunded and lesser-funded researchers.

ABSTRACT

One objective was to evaluate the association of dry matter intake as a percentage of body weight (DMI%BW) and energy balance (EB) prepartum and postpartum, and energy-corrected milk (ECM) postpatum with digestive disorders postpartum. For this, ANOVA was used, and DMI%BW, EB, and ECM were the outcome variables, and left displaced abomasum (LDA), indigestion, and other digestive disorders (ODDZ) were the explanatory variables. The main objective was to evaluate prepartum DMI%BW and EB as predictors of digestive disorders. For this, logistic regression was used, and LDA, indigestion, and ODDZ were the outcome variables and DMI%BW and EB were the explanatory variables. Data from 689 cows from 11 experiments were compiled. Left displaced abomasum was not associated with prepartum DMI%BW or EB. Postpartum data were normalized to the day of the event (day 0). Cows that developed LDA had lesser postpartum DMI%BW on days -24, -23, -12, -7 to 0 and from days 1 to 8, 10 to 12, and 14 and 16, lesser postpartum EB from days -7 to -5, -3 to 0, and 12, and lesser postpartum energy-corrected milk on days -19, -2, -1, 0, 7, 9, 10, 15, and 17 relative to diagnosis than cows without LDA. Cows that developed indigestion had lesser prepartum DMI%BW and EB than cows without indigestion, and lesser postpartum DMI%BW on days -24, -1, 0, 1, and 2, and greater DMI%BW on day 26, lesser ECM on days -24, -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2 relative to diagnosis. Postpartum EB was not associated with indigestion postpartum. Cows that developed ODDZ had lesser prepartum DMI%BW on day -8 and from days -5 to -2, lesser prepartum EB on day -8 and from days -5 to -2, and lesser postpartum DMI%BW than cows without ODDZ. Each 0.1 percentage point decrease in the average DMI%BW and each Mcal decrease in the average EB in the last 3 days prepartum increased the odds of having indigestion by 9% each. Cutoffs for DMI%BW and EB during the last 3 days prepartum to predict indigestion were established and were ≤1.3%/day and ≤0.68 Mcal/day, respectively. In summary, measures of prepartum DMI%BW and EB were associated with indigestion and ODDZ postpartum and were predictors of indigestion postpartum, although the effect sizes were small.

INTRODUCTION: As a result of COVID-19, many hospitals underwent a conversion for the care for this disease. OBJECTIVE: To analyze COVID-19 hospital epidemiological behavior from March to August 2020. METHODS: Through a series of cases, COVID-19 epidemiological behavior at the hospital was analyzed, for which simple case rates, percentages and incidence of COVID-19 per 100 hospital discharges were estimated. RESULTS: Out of 491 subjects who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, 156 (31.7 %) were hospitalized for clinical data of moderate to severe disease. Average age was 59.1 years; 121 cases (75 %) were discharged due to improvement, and 32 (20.5 %), due to death. Average age of those who died was 69.7 years, and the most affected age group was 60 to 80 years (45.4 %). Calculated lethality was 20.5 per 100 hospital discharges, while that calculated taking into account positive patients (outpatients and hospitalized patients) was 6.5. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 epidemiological behavior was similar to that described in other studies; however, lethality and mortality are above national average. The analysis of this and of the factors that favored it in our population is pending.


INTRODUCCIÓN: A consecuencia de COVID-19, numerosos hospitales sufrieron una reconversión para la atención de esta enfermedad. OBJETIVO: Analizar el comportamiento epidemiológico hospitalario de COVID-19 entre marzo y agosto de 2020. MÉTODOS: En una serie de casos se analizó el comportamiento epidemiológico de COVID-19 en un hospital de tercer nivel, para lo cual se estimaron frecuencias simples de casos, porcentajes e incidencia por cada 100 egresos hospitalarios. RESULTADOS: De 491 sujetos con prueba positiva para SARS-CoV-2, 156 (31.7 %) fueron hospitalizados por datos clínicos de enfermedad moderada a grave. La edad promedio fue de 59.1 años; 121 casos (75 %) egresaron por mejoría y 32 (20.5 %), por defunción. El promedio de edad de quienes fallecieron fue de 69.7 años y el grupo etario más afectado fue el de 60 a 80 años (45.4 %). La letalidad calculada fue de 20.5 por 100 egresos hospitalarios, mientras que la calculada tomando en cuenta los pacientes positivos (ambulatorios y hospitalizados) fue de 6.5. CONCLUSIONES: El comportamiento epidemiológico de COVID-19 fue similar al descrito en otros estudios; sin embargo, la letalidad y la mortalidad están por encima de la media nacional. Está pendiente el análisis de estas y de los factores que las favorecieron en nuestra población.
