ABSTRACT

In recent decades, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the primary organic pollutants associated with particulate matter (PM), have attracted significant attention due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic potential. However, past studies have lacked exploration into the diurnal variation characteristics of PAHs, primarily due to limited analytical technical capabilities. This study utilized a thermal-desorption device coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) to identify the levels of PAHs in PM2.5 during short periods (3-hr) and aimed to investigate the diurnal variations, possible sources, and potential health risks associated with PM2.5-bound PAHs in northern Taiwan. The mean concentration of total PAHs in PM2.5 was 1.22 ± 0.69 ng m-3 during the sampling period, with high molecular weight PAHs dominating. Source apportionment by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that industrial emissions and traffic emissions (57.7 %) were the predominant sources of PAHs, with petroleum volatilization and coal/biomass combustion (42.3 %) making a lesser contribution. Diurnal variations of industrial and traffic emissions showed higher concentrations during traffic rush hours, while petroleum volatilization and coal/biomass combustion displayed higher concentrations at noon. Results from the potential source contribution function (PSCF) and the concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) model suggested that industrial emissions and traffic emissions mostly originated from local sources and were concentrated in the vicinity of the sampling site and the coastal area of western Taiwan. Source-attributed excess cancer risk (ECR) showed that industrial and traffic emissions had the highest cancer risks during morning traffic peak hours (1.69 ×10-5), while petroleum volatilization and coal/biomass combustion reached the maximum at noon (4.75 ×10-6). As a result, efforts to reduce PAH emissions from industrial and vehicle exhaust sources, especially during morning traffic hours, can help mitigate their adverse impact on human health.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological evidence suggests an association between CS and offspring metabolic syndrome (MetS), but whether a causal relationship exists is unknown. METHODS: In this study, timed-mated Wistar rat dams were randomly assigned to cesarean section (CS), vaginal delivery (VD), and surrogate groups. The offspring from both CS and VD groups were reared by surrogate dams until weaning, and weaned male offspring from both groups were randomly assigned to receive normal diet (ND) or high-fat/high-fructose diet (HFF) ad libitum for 39 weeks. RESULTS: By the end of study, CS-ND offspring gained 17.8% more weight than VD-ND offspring, while CS-HFF offspring gained 36.4% more weight than VD-HFF offspring. Compared with VD-ND offspring, CS-ND offspring tended to have increased triglycerides (0.27 mmol/l, 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.50), total cholesterol (0.30 mmol/l, -0.08 to 0.68), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (0.30 mmol/l, -0.01 to 0.60); more pronounced differences were observed between CS-HFF and VD-HFF offspring in these indicators (triglyceride, 0.66 mmol/l, 0.35 to 0.97; total cholesterol, 0.46 mmol/l, 0.13 to 0.79; and FPG, 0.55 mmol/l, 0.13 to 0.98). CONCLUSIONS: CS offspring were more prone to adverse metabolic profile and HFF might exacerbate this condition, indicating the association between CS and MetS is likely to be causal. IMPACT: Whether the observed associations between CS and MetS in non-randomized human studies are causally relevant remains undetermined. Compared with vaginally born offspring rats, CS born offspring gained more body weight and tended to have compromised lipid profiles and abnormal insulin sensitivity, suggesting a causal relationship between CS and MetS that may be further amplified by a high-fat/high-fructose diet. Due to the high prevalence of CS births globally, greater clinical consideration must be given to the potential adverse effects of CS, and whether these risks should be made known to patients in clinical practice merits evaluation.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic fields (MF) have been proven efficient in bioaugmentation, and the internal MFs have become competitive because they require no configuration, despite their application in waste gas treatment remaining largely unexplored. In this study, we firstly developed an intensity-regulable bioaugmentation with internal MF for gaseous chlorobenzene (CB) treatment with modified packing in batch bioreactors, and the elimination capacity increased by up to 26%, surpassing that of the external MF. Additionally, the microbial affinity to CB and the packing surface was enhanced, which was correlated with the ninefold increased secreted ratio of proteins/polysaccharides, 43% promoted cell surface hydrophobicity, and half reduced zeta potential. Furthermore, the dehydrogenase content was promoted over 3 times, and CB removal steadily increased with the rising intensity indicating enhanced biofilm activity and reduced CB bioimpedance; this was further supported by kinetic analysis, which resulted in improved cell adhesive ability and biological utilisation of CB. The results introduced a novel concept of adjustable magnetic bioaugmentation and provided technical support for industrial waste gas treatments. KEY POINTS: • Regulable magnetic bioaugmentation was developed to promote 26% chlorobenzene removal • Chlorobenzene mineralisation was enhanced under the magnetic field • Microbial adhesion was promoted through weakening repulsive forces.

ABSTRACT

Inflammation in the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment is a constitutive component of leukemogenesis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Current evidence suggests that both leukemic blasts and stroma secrete proinflammatory factors that actively suppress the function of healthy hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). HSPCs are also cellular components of the innate immune system, and we reasoned that they may actively propagate the inflammation in the leukemic niche. In two separate congenic models of AML we confirm by evaluation of the BM plasma secretome and HSPC-selective single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) that multipotent progenitors and long-lived stem cells adopt inflammatory gene expression programs, even at low leukemic infiltration of the BM. In particular, we observe interferon gamma (IFN-γ) pathway activation, along with secretion of its chemokine target, CXCL10. We show that AML-derived nanometer-sized extracellular vesicles (EVAML) are sufficient to trigger this inflammatory HSPC response, both in vitro and in vivo. Altogether, our studies indicate that HSPCs are an unrecognized component of the inflammatory adaptation of the BM by leukemic cells. The pro-inflammatory conversion and long-lived presence of HSPCs in the BM along with their regenerative re-expansion during remission may impact clonal selection and disease evolution.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Full-cohort and sibling-comparison designs have yielded inconsistent results about the impacts of caesarean delivery on offspring health outcomes, with the effect estimates from the latter being more likely directed towards the null value. We hypothesized that the seemingly conservative results obtained from the sibling-comparison design might be attributed to inadequate adjustment for non-shared confounders between siblings, particularly maternal age at delivery. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was first conducted. PubMed, Embase, and the Web of Science were searched from database inception to April 6, 2022. Included studies (1) examined the association of caesarean delivery, whether elective or emergency, with offspring health outcomes; (2) simultaneously conducted full-cohort and sibling-comparison analyses; and (3) reported adjusted effect estimates with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). No language restrictions were applied. Data were extracted by 2 reviewers independently. Three-level meta-analytic models were used to calculate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for caesarean versus vaginal delivery on multiple offspring health outcomes separately for full-cohort and sibling-comparison designs. Subgroup analyses were performed based on the method of adjustment for maternal age at delivery. A simulation study was then conducted. The simulated datasets were generated with some key parameters derived from the meta-analysis. RESULTS: Eighteen studies involving 21,854,828 individuals were included. The outcomes assessed included mental and behavioral disorders; endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases; asthma; cardiorespiratory fitness; and multiple sclerosis. The overall pooled OR for estimates from the full-cohort design was 1.14 (95% CI: 1.11 to 1.17), higher than that for estimates from the sibling-comparison design (OR = 1.08; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.14). Stratified analyses showed that estimates from the sibling-comparison design varied considerably across studies using different methods to adjust for maternal age at delivery in multivariate analyses, while those from the full-cohort design were rather stable: in studies that did not adjust maternal age at delivery, the pooled OR of full-cohort vs. sibling-comparison design was 1.10 (95% CI: 0.99 to 1.22) vs. 1.06 (95% CI: 0.85 to 1.31), in studies adjusting it as a categorical variable, 1.15 (95% CI: 1.11 to 1.19) vs. 1.07 (95% CI: 1.00 to 1.15), and in studies adjusting it as a continuous variable, 1.12 (95% CI: 1.05 to 1.19) vs. 1.12 (95% CI: 0.98 to 1.29). The severe underestimation bias related to the inadequate adjustment of maternal age at delivery in sibling-comparison analyses was fully replicated in the simulation study. CONCLUSIONS: Sibling-comparison analyses may underestimate the association of caesarean delivery with multiple offspring health outcomes due to inadequate adjustment of non-shared confounders, such as maternal age at delivery. Thus, we should be cautious when interpreting the seemingly conservative results of sibling-comparison analyses in delivery-related studies.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution of metal elements in PM10 and their potential sources and associated health risks over a period of two years in eight locations in the central part of western Taiwan. The study revealed that the mass concentration of PM10 and the total mass concentration of 20 metal elements in PM10 were 39.0 µg m-3 and 4.74 µg m-3, respectively, with total metal elements accounting for approximately 13.0% of PM10. Of the total metal elements, 95.6% were crustal elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, and Na), with trace elements (As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ga, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, V, and Zn) contributing only 4.4%. Spatially, the inland areas exhibited higher PM10 concentrations due to lee-side topography and low wind speeds. In contrast, the coastal regions exhibited higher total metal concentrations because of the dominance of crustal elements from sea salt and crustal soil. Four primary sources of metal elements in PM10 were identified as sea salt (58%), re-suspended dust (32%), vehicle emissions and waste incineration (8%), and industrial emissions and power plants (2%). The positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis results indicated that natural sources like sea salt and road dust contributed up to 90% of the total metal elements in PM10, while only 10% was attributed to human activities. The excess cancer risks (ECRs) associated with As, Co, and Cr(VI) were greater than 1 × 10-6, and the total ECR was 6.42 × 10-5. Although only 10% of total metal elements in PM10 came from human activities, they contributed to 82% of the total ECR.

ABSTRACT

Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) plays important roles in innate immunology. In this study, we isolated the STING gene in Nile tilapia, termed OnSTING. Using quantitative RT-PCR, we explored the expression patterns of the OnSTING gene. Using dual-luciferase reporter assays, we revealed the effect of STING overexpression on nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), IFN and AP activation in HEK 293 cells. Using coimmunoprecipitation, the interaction of STING and TRIF was studied. The effect of OnSTING overexpression on the antibacterial activity in tilapia was investigated. The results showed that upon stimulation with Streptococcus agalactiae, the OnSTING transcript was upregulated in all the tested tissues. OnSTING mRNA levels were very stable from 2.5 to 8.5 dpf. Moreover, OnSTING, OnIFN and IRF3 expression was induced by LPS, Poly (I:C), S. agalactiae WC1535 and DCPS in Nile tilapia macrophages. Overexpression of OnSTING and OnDDX41 increased NF-κB activation in HEK293T cells and slightly increased IFN-ß activation but had no effect on AP-1 activation. OnSTING interacted with OnDDX41 and OnTBK1. However, OnSTING did not interact with TRIF. OnSTING overexpression in vivo decreased the sensitivity of tilapia to S. agalactiae infection. These results are helpful for clarifying the innate immune response against bacterial infection in Nile tilapia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vaginal seeding-exposure of neonates to maternal vaginal fluids-has been proposed to improve the microbiota of infants born through cesarean delivery, but its impacts on the infants' subsequent health outcomes remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the impacts of vaginal seeding on gut microbiota, growth, and allergy risks in infants born through cesarean delivery. STUDY DESIGN: This randomized controlled trial was conducted at Liuyang Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital in Hunan, China. We estimated that a minimum sample size of 106 was needed by assuming a standardized effect size of 0.6 for the primary outcomes, with a statistical power of 80%, a 2-sided type I error of 0.05, and an expected loss to follow-up rate of 15%. Finally, 120 singleton term pregnant women scheduled for cesarean delivery were enrolled from November 2018 to September 2019. Infant follow-up was completed in September 2021. The participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to the vaginal seeding group (n=60; infants were swabbed immediately after birth using gauze preincubated in maternal vagina) or the control group (n=60; routine standard care). The first set of primary outcomes was infant body mass index and body mass index z-scores at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age. The other primary outcome was the total allergy risk score at 18 months for 20 common allergens (each scored from 0-6 points). Characteristics of gut microbiota, overweight/obesity, and allergic diseases and symptoms were included as secondary outcomes. The main analyses were performed according to the modified intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: Of 120 infants, 117 were included in the analyses. Infant body mass index and body mass index z-scores did not significantly differ between the 2 groups at any of the 4 time points, with the largest difference in point estimates occurring at 6 months: the mean (standard deviation) body mass index was 17.5 (1.4) kg/m2 and 17.8 (1.8) kg/m2 in the vaginal seeding and control groups, respectively (mean difference, -0.31 kg/m2 [95% confidence interval, -0.91 to 0.28]; P=.30), and body mass index z-score was 0.2 (1.0) and 0.4 (1.1), respectively (mean difference, -0.20 [95% confidence interval, -0.58 to 0.18]; P=.31). The median total allergy risk score was 1.5 (interquartile range, 0.0-4.0) in the vaginal seeding group and 2.0 (interquartile range, 1.0-3.0) in the control group (median difference, 0.00 [95% confidence interval, -1.00 to 1.00]; P=.48). For infants from the vaginal seeding group, the relative abundance of genera Lactobacillus and Bacteroides in the gut microbiota was slightly yet nonsignificantly elevated at birth and 6 months, and the risk of overweight/obesity was lower at 6 months (0/57 vs 6/59; relative risk, 0.03 [95% confidence interval, 0.00-0.57]; P=.03) though not at subsequent time points. Other secondary outcomes did not differ between groups. No adverse events related to the intervention were reported. CONCLUSION: For infants born through cesarean delivery, vaginal seeding has no significant impacts on the gut microbiota, growth, or allergy risks during the first 2 years of life.

OBJECTIVE@#To describe the secular trends of age at menarche and age at natural menopause of women from a county of Shandong Province.@*METHODS@#Based on the data of the Premarital Medical Examination and the Cervical Cancer and Breast Cancer Screening of the county, the secular trends of age at menarche in women born in 1951 to 1998 and age at menopause in women born in 1951 to 1975 were studied. Joinpoint regression was used to identify potential inflection points regarding the trend of age at menarche. Average hazard ratios (AHR) of early menopause among women born in different generations were estimated by performing multivariate weighted Cox regression.@*RESULTS@#The average age at menarche was (16.43±1.89) years for women born in 1951 and (13.99±1.22) years for women born in 1998. The average age at menarche was lower for urban women than that for rural women, and the higher the education level, the lower the average age at menarche. Joinpoint regression analysis identified three inflection points: 1959, 1973 and 1993. The average age at menarche decreased annually by 0.03 (P < 0.001), 0.08 (P < 0.001), and 0.03 (P < 0.001) years respectively for women born during 1951-1959, 1960-1973, and 1974-1993, while it remained stable for those born during 1994-1998 (P=0.968). As for age at menopause, compared with women born during 1951-1960, those born during 1961-1965, 1966-1970 and 1971-1975 showed a gradual decrease in the risk of early menopause and a tendency to delay the age at menopause. The stratified analysis presented that the risk of early menopause gradually decreased and the age of menopause showed a significant delay among those with education level of junior high school and below, but this trend was not obvious among those with education level of senior high school and above, where the risk of early menopause decreased and then increased among those with education level of college and above, and the corresponding AHRs were 0.90 (0.66-1.22), 1.07 (0.79-1.44) and 1.14 (0.79-1.66).@*CONCLUSION@#The age at menarche for women born since 1951 gradually declined until 1994 and leveled off, with a decrease of nearly 2.5 years in these years. The age at menopause for women born between 1951 and 1975 was generally delayed over time, but the trend of first increase and then decrease was observed among those with relatively higher education levels. In the context of the increasing delay in age at marriage and childbearing and the decline of fertility, this study highlights the necessity of the assessment and monitoring of women' s basic reproductive health status, especially the risk of early menopause.

ABSTRACT

In the past decade, the concept of membrane anatomy has been gradually applied in gastric cancer surgery. Based on this theory, D2 lymphadenectomy plus complete mesogastric excision (D2+CME) has been proposed, which has been demonstrated to significantly reduce intraoperative bleeding and intraperitoneal free cancer cells during surgery, decrease surgical complications, and improve survival. These results indicate that membrane anatomy is feasible and efficacious in gastric cancer surgery. In this review, we will describe the important contents of membrane anatomy, including "Metastasis V"(2013, 2015), proximal segmentation of dorsal mesogastrium (2015), D2+CME procedure (2016), "cancer leak"(2018), and surgical outcomes of D2+CME (2022).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Fish oil is one of the most popular supplements in the UK and other developed countries. However, the relationship between fish oil use and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively examine the association of habitual fish oil supplementation with incident COPD risk and to evaluate potential effect modification by genetic predisposition. METHODS: This study included 484,414 participants (mean and standard deviation [SD] age: 56.5 [8.1] years) from the UK Biobank who completed a touchscreen questionnaire on habitual fish oil supplement use between 2006 and 2010 and were followed up through 2018. Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) with adjustment for sociodemographic and lifestyle behaviours, health conditions, and other potential confounding factors. A weighted genetic risk score (GRS) for COPD was derived from 112 validated single nucleotide polymorphisms. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 9.0 years, 8860 incident COPD events were recorded. A total of 31.4% (152,230) of the study participants reported habitual fish oil supplementation at baseline. Habitual fish oil supplementation was significantly associated with a lower risk of incident COPD (adjusted HR: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.84-0.93). The association with COPD did not differ by GRS strata (P for interaction = 0.880). The results from subgroup and sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that habitual fish oil supplementation is associated with a lower risk of incident COPD, irrespective of genetic predisposition.

ABSTRACT

Solid non-aqueous phases (NAPs), such as silicone rubber, have been used extensively to improve the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the removal of VOCs is difficult to be further improved because the poor understanding of the mass transfer and reaction processes. Further, the conventional reactors were either complicated or uneconomical. In view of this, herein, an airlift bioreactor with silicone rubber was designed and investigated for dichloromethane (DCM) treatment. The removal efficiency of Reactor 1 (with silicone rubber) was significantly higher than that of Reactor 2 (without silicone rubber), with corresponding higher chloride ion and CO2 production. It was found that Reactor 1 achieved a much better DCM shock tolerance capability and biomass stability than Reactor 2. Silicone rubber not only enhanced the mass transfer in terms of both gas/liquid and gas/microbial phases, but also decreased the toxicity of DCM to microorganisms. Noteworthily, despite the identical inoculum used, the relative abundance of potential DCM-degrading bacteria in Reactor 1 (91.2%) was much higher than that in Reactor 2 (24.3%) at 216 h. Additionally, the silicone rubber could be automatically circulated in the airlift bioreactor due to the driven effect of the airflow, resulting in a significant reduction of energy consumption.

ABSTRACT

The association of gestational weight gain (GWG) with perinatal outcomes seems to differ between women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Whether GDM is an effect-modifier of the association has not been verified. This study aimed to assess the modifying effect of GDM on the association of GWG with perinatal outcomes. Data on 12,128 pregnant women (3013 with GDM and 9115 without GDM) were extracted from a prospective, multicenter, cohort study in China. The associations of total and trimester-specific GWG rates (GWGR) with perinatal outcomes, including small size for gestational age, large size for gestational age (LGA), preterm birth, cesarean delivery, and gestational hypertension disorders, were assessed. The modifying effect of GDM on the association was assessed on both multiplicative and additive scales, as estimated by mixed-effects logistic regression. As a result, total GWGR was associated with all of the perinatal outcomes. GDM modified the association of total GWGR with LGA and cesarean delivery on both scales (all p < 0.05) but did not modify the association with other outcomes. The modifying effect was observed in the third trimester but not in the first or the second trimester. Therefore, maternal GWG is associated with perinatal outcomes, and GDM modifies the association with LGA and cesarean delivery in the third trimester.

ABSTRACT

The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides is an important freshwater aquaculture fish in China. Recently, largemouth bass at a fish farm in Guangdong province experienced an outbreak of a serious ulcer disease. As part of the investigations conducted to identify the aetiology and identify potentially effective control measures, we isolated a pathogenic bacterium (NK-1 strain) from the diseased fish. It was identified as Nocardia seriolae through morphological observation, physiological and biochemical analysis, and molecular identification, and its pathogenicity was verified by experimental infection. Pathological changes in the diseased fish included granulomatous lesions in the liver and spleen, destruction of renal tubules, necrosis of intestinal epithelial cells, infiltration of inflammatory cells in the brain, vacuolation of cells, and swelling and cracking of the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Bacterial detection using qPCR showed that the spleen and intestine were the main organs targeted by N. seriolae. The mortality of largemouth bass experimentally infected with N. seriolae at 21°C was significantly lower than that in fish infected at higher temperatures between 24 and 33°C; there were no significant differences in the levels of mortality at these higher temperatures. The level of mortality of largemouth bass infected with N. seriolae was lowest at a neutral water pH of 7 but increased significantly at higher and lower pH. Of the tested Chinese herbal medicines, Chinese sumac Galla chinensis and Chinese skullcap Scutellaria baicalensis exhibited the best antibacterial effects. This study lays a foundation for the clinical diagnosis and scientific control of ulcer disease in largemouth bass.

ABSTRACT

Recommender systems help users filter items they may be interested in from massive multimedia content to alleviate information overload. Collaborative filtering-based models perform recommendation relying on users' historical interactions, which meets great difficulty in modeling users' interests with extremely sparse interactions. Fortunately, the rich semantics hidden in items may be promising in helping to describing users' interests. In this work, we explore the semantic correlations between items on modeling users' interests and propose knowledge-aware multispace embedding learning (KMEL) for personalized recommendation. KMEL attempts to model users' interests across semantic structures to leverage valuable knowledge. High-order semantic collaborative signals are extracted in multiple independent semantic spaces and aggregated to describe users' interests in each specific semantic. The semantic embeddings are adaptively integrated with a target-aware attention mechanism to learn cross-space multisemantic embeddings for users and items, which are fed to the subsequent pairwise interaction layer for personalized recommendation. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed KMEL model.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cesarean delivery vs vaginal delivery was reported to increase the risks of childhood obesity, pneumonia, anemia, and neurobehavioral disorders, but few studies were able to deal with the confounding biases associated with medical conditions indicating cesareans. This prospective cohort study aims to investigate the associations of non-medically indicated cesarean delivery on maternal request (CDMR) with these child health outcomes. Methods: Among 17 748 liveborn infants whose mothers (primiparas) participated in a randomized controlled trial on micronutrient supplementation and pregnancy outcomes during 2006-2009 in 5 rural counties in Hebei Province, China, 6972 singletons born by full-term spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD) and 3626 by CDMR were extracted for the assessments of obesity (weight-for-height z-score >3) and pneumonia (self-reported) at 1.5-5 years in 2011. Some children were further randomly selected from these two groups for the assessments of anemia (hemoglobin <110 g/L, 2341 SVD and 2417 CDMR) and neurobehavioral disorders (raw score of Child Behavior Checklist larger than the 90th percentile of the normative sample, 1257 SVD and 1060 CDMR). Results: Compared with SVD, CDMR was associated with increased risks of obesity (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.14-1.75, P = 0.002) and anemia (aOR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.28-2.12, P < 0.001), but not with the risk of pneumonia (aOR = 1.16, 95% CI = 0.94-1.45, P = 0.17) or neurobehavioral disorders (aORs varied from 0.82 to 0.91, P > 0.05) in childhood. Conclusions: Cesarean delivery, independent of cesarean indications, is likely associated with childhood obesity and anemia, indicating a need to keep pregnant women informed, especially those seeking CDMR, a need to explore possible improvement on obstetric service, and even a need for main stakeholders to reach a compromise in making a cesarean decision. ABSTRACT

In this study, sodium acetate (NaAC) as a co-substrate effectively promoted the metabolism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa. In the cultivation supplied with 5.0 and 10.0 g L-1 NaAC, 51.1% and 61.2% SMX was removed, respectively. On this basis, the improvement effect of plant hormone gibberellin (GA3) on SMX removal by 5 g L-1 NaAC supplied as co-substrate was further investigated. The results showed that biodegradation played decisive role in the removal of SMX. As a plant hormone, GA3 effectively improved the co-metabolic removal efficiency of SMX by C. pyrenoidosa. Especially when GA3 dosage reached 10.0 and 50.0 mg L-1, C. pyrenoidosa showed a very high SMX removal rate of 83.5% and 95.3%, respectively. Transcriptome analysis showed that GA3 promoted the removal of SMX by C. pyrenoidosa was the result of the combined action of exogenous and endogenous plant hormones.

ABSTRACT

Rationale: Both genetic variants and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) contribute to the risk of incident severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Whether genetic risk of incident severe COVID-19 is the same regardless of preexisting COPD is unknown. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential interaction between genetic risk and COPD in relation to severe COVID-19. Methods: We constructed a polygenic risk score for severe COVID-19 by using 112 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 430,582 participants from the UK Biobank study. We examined the associations of genetic risk and COPD with severe COVID-19 by using logistic regression models. Results: Of 430,582 participants, 712 developed severe COVID-19 as of February 22, 2021, of whom 19.8% had preexisting COPD. Compared with participants at low genetic risk, those at intermediate genetic risk (odds ratio [OR], 1.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-1.66) and high genetic risk (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.18-1.92) had higher risk of severe COVID-19 (P for trend = 0.001), and the association was independent of COPD (P for interaction = 0.76). COPD was associated with a higher risk of incident severe COVID-19 (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.12-1.67; P = 0.002). Participants at high genetic risk and with COPD had a higher risk of severe COVID-19 (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.35-3.04; P < 0.001) than those at low genetic risk and without COPD. Conclusions: The polygenic risk score, which combines multiple risk alleles, can be effectively used in screening for high-risk populations of severe COVID-19. High genetic risk correlates with a higher risk of severe COVID-19, regardless of preexisting COPD.

ABSTRACT

EPA and DHA are essential for maternal and fetal health, but epidemiological data are sparse in China. We examined the trends of EPA alone and a combination of EPA plus DHA in pregnant and lactating women in three distinct geographic regions in China and explored their potential influencing factors. A total of 1015 healthy women during mid-pregnancy, late pregnancy or lactation were recruited from Weihai (coastland), Yueyang (lakeland) and Baotou (inland) cities of China between May and July of 2014. Maternal EPA and DHA concentrations (percentage of total fatty acids) in plasma and erythrocytes were measured by capillary GC. Adjusted EPA plus DHA concentrations in both plasma and erythrocytes significantly declined from mid-pregnancy (2·92 %, 6·95 %) to late pregnancy (2·20 %, 6·42 %) and lactation (2·40 %, 6·29 %) (Ptrend < 0·001); and both concentrations were highest in coastland, followed by lakeland, and lowest in inland (P < 0·001). Regarding EPA alone, the concentrations were higher in women during lactation or late pregnancy and in women in coastland and inland areas. Moreover, concentrations of EPA or EPA plus DHA were higher in women with older age, higher education, higher annual family income per capita and higher dietary intake of marine aquatic product and mutton. In lactating women, erythrocyte EPA concentration was higher in those having breast-feeding partially v. exclusively. In conclusion, maternal plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of EPA plus DHA or EPA alone differed with geographic regions, physiological periods and maternal characteristics, indicating a need of population-specific health strategies to improve fatty acids status in pregnant and lactating women.
