ABSTRACT

Gemcitabine (GEM) is widely employed in the treatment of various cancers, including pancreatic cancer. Despite their clinical success, challenges related to GEM resistance and toxicity persist. Therefore, a deeper understanding of its intracellular mechanisms and potential targets is urgently needed. In this study, through mass spectrometry analysis in data-dependent acquisition mode, we carried out quantitative proteomics (three independent replications) and thermal proteome profiling (TPP, two independent replications) on MIA PaCa-2 cells to explore the effects of GEM. Our proteomic analysis revealed that GEM led to the upregulation of the cell cycle and DNA replication proteins. Notably, we observed the upregulation of S-phase kinase-associated protein 2 (SKP2), a cell cycle and chemoresistance regulator. Combining SKP2 inhibition with GEM showed synergistic effects, suggesting SKP2 as a potential target for enhancing the GEM sensitivity. Through TPP, we pinpointed four potential GEM binding targets implicated in tumor development, including in breast and liver cancers, underscoring GEM's broad-spectrum antitumor capabilities. These findings provide valuable insights into GEM's molecular mechanisms and offer potential targets for improving treatment efficacy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: High financial burden for patients has been reported for multiple types of cancer, but there are limited data in those with HCC. We aimed to describe the financial burden for patients diagnosed with HCC and identify correlates of high financial burden. METHODS: We used the IQVIA PharMetrics Plus for Academics database to identify commercially insured patients diagnosed with HCC between 2006 and 2021. Patient financial liability was defined as the difference between allowed and paid amounts from adjudicated insurance claims. We reported total and HCC-related financial liabilities (i.e., cost for HCC-related claims), with high total financial liability defined as ≥$3000 annually and high HCC-related financial liability as ≥$1000 annually. We used multivariable logistic regression modeling to identify factors associated with high total and HCC-related financial liability. RESULTS: Among 11,609 patients with HCC, the median total financial liability during the year after HCC diagnosis was $2955 (Q1-Q3: $972-$6293). Nearly half (45%) of patients experienced high total financial liability, with the greatest liability incurred in the 3-month period immediately following HCC diagnosis. Older age, increased comorbidity, and cirrhosis-related complications were associated with higher total patient liability. Patient liability also varied by type of HCC treatment, with systemic therapy and liver transplantation having the highest financial liability in multivariable analysis. However, only 66.7% of the patients experienced HCC-related liability. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with HCC experience significant financial liability underscoring a need for price transparency as well as financial counseling in this population.

ABSTRACT

Photocatalytic technology emerges as a promising solution for the sustainable treatment of contaminated wastewater. However, the practical implementation of designed photocatalysts often faces challenges due to the intricate 'high carbon footprint' process and limited outdoor laboratory investigations. Herein, a simple yet versatile impregnation approach is proposed to anchor highly dispersed FeCl3 on a g-C3N4 substrate (Fe-C3N4) with minimal energy consumption and post-processing. Fe-C3N4 enhances photocatalytic reactivity for antibiotic degradation via a synergistic photo-Fenton-like oxidation technique, efficiently removing antibiotic pollutants from actual livestock wastewater. The Fe-C3N4 catalyst exhibited consistent degradation performance over five cycles in laboratory conditions, maintaining a degradation efficiency exceeding 90 % for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCHCl). Furthermore, we engineered a straightforward Fe-C3N4Na2SiO3 reactor for treating livestock wastewater, achieving an 81.8 % removal of TCHCl in outdoor field tests conducted in the winter and summer in China. The Fe-C3N4 catalyst demonstrated high feasibility in treating antibiotic-contaminated livestock wastewater under year-round climatic conditions, leveraging synergistic effects. The stabilization of Fe-C3N4 for the degradation of antibiotic-containing wastewater under sunlight represents a significant advancement in the practical application of photocatalysts, marking a crucial milestone from experimental conception to implementation. Acute toxicity estimation suggested that intermediates/products generated exhibited lower toxicity compared to TCHCl, indicating their practical applicability. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis successfully predicted significant electron transfer between Fe-C3N4 and TCHCl, indicating efficient interfacial interactions on the TCHCl surface. To ensure the environmental sustainability of Fe-C3N4, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to compared this photocatalyst with other commonly used emerging photocatalysts. The results demonstrated that Fe-C3N4 exhibits a two orders of magnitude lower CO2 equivalent emission compared to the ZnO photocatalyst, indicating a cost-effective and efficient synergistic photo-Fenton-like catalytic approach. This low-cost photocatalyst, moving from the laboratory to real-world wastewater applications, provides a powerful and more sustainable solution for the efficient treatment of wastewater containing antibiotics from livestock farming.

ABSTRACT

When performing complex tasks such as position transfer and material transportation, the distributed driving unmanned platform with variable configurations needs to address the challenge of multi-wheel cooperative torque distribution control to achieve high-performance differential steering and enhance vehicle dynamics. The configuration change will impact the dynamic performance of the unmanned platform, posing a challenge to the performance of the existing control strategy based on mathematical model development. In order to address the aforementioned issues, this paper analyzes the impact of changes in vehicle configuration on steering gain and proposes a hierarchical adaptive differential steering strategy based on variable vehicle configurations. Firstly, the response characteristics of the yaw angle relative to the active yaw moment under the influence of changes in wheelbase and tread are analyzed. Based on this analysis, two structural modes, maneuverable and balanced, are selected. Secondly, a localized-modelling sliding mode control method with an extended state observer is proposed to estimate the desired yaw moment in the upper controller, considering the motor's execution delay. Then, the lower controller optimizes the torque of each wheel in real-time using the whale optimization algorithm. It aims to optimize tire energy dissipation and tire load rate while ensuring driving stability and achieving differential steering. Finally, through co-simulation and experiments on a scaled prototype, the reliability of the dynamics theory and the superiority of the control algorithm are validated. This optimization has led to significant improvements in the tire dissipation energy index and tire load rate index.

ABSTRACT

Prenatal exposures to toxic metals and trace elements have been linked to childhood neurodevelopment. However, existing evidence remains inconclusive, and further research is needed to investigate the mixture effects of multiple metal exposures on childhood neurodevelopment. We aimed to examine the associations between prenatal exposure to specific metals and metal mixtures and neurodevelopment in children. In this prospective cohort study, we used the multivariable linear regressions and the robust modified Poisson regressions to explore the associations of prenatal exposure to 25 specific metals with neurodevelopment among children at 3 years of age in 854 mother-child pairs from the Jiangsu Birth Cohort (JBC) Study. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was employed to assess the joint effects of multiple metals on neurodevelopment. Prenatal manganese (Mn) exposure was negatively associated with the risk of non-optimal cognition development of children, while vanadium (V), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), antimony (Sb), cerium (Ce) and uranium (U) exposures were positively associated with the risk of non-optimal gross motor development. BKMR identified an interaction effect between Sb and Ce on non-optimal gross motor development. Additionally, an element risk score (ERS), representing the mixture effect of multiple metal exposures including V, Cu, Zn, Sb, Ce and U was constructed based on weights from a Poisson regression model. Children with ERS in the highest tertile had higher probability of non-optimal gross motor development (RR = 2.37, 95 % CI: 1.15, 4.86) versus those at the lowest tertile. Notably, Sb [conditional-posterior inclusion probabilities (cPIP) = 0.511] and U (cPIP = 0.386) mainly contributed to the increased risk of non-optimal gross motor development. The findings highlight the importance of paying attention to the joint effects of multiple metals on children's neurodevelopment. The ERS score may serve as an indicator of comprehensive metal exposure risk for children's neurodevelopment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Patients with hepatocellular cancer (HCC) are vulnerable to psychological distress given a new cancer diagnosis superimposed on pre-existing chronic liver disease. We aimed to characterise the psychiatric burden in HCC, risk factors for incident diagnosis and treatment patterns over time. METHODS: Using IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus for Academics-a nationally representative claims database of the commercially insured US population-we identified psychiatric diagnoses and treatment among patients with newly diagnosed HCC. Multivariable logistic regression modelling identified factors associated with psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. RESULTS: Of 11,609 patients with HCC, 2166 (18.6%) had a psychiatric diagnosis after cancer diagnosis with depression (58.3%) and anxiety (53.0%) being most common. Women (aOR 1.33, 95% CI [1.19-1.49]), pre-existing psychiatric diagnoses (aOR 9.12 [8.08-10.3]) and HCC treatment type (transplant: aOR 2.15 [1.66-2.77]; locoregional therapies: aOR 1.74 [1.52-1.99]; hospice: aOR 2.43 [1.79-3.29]) were significantly associated with psychiatric diagnosis. Female sex, ascites, higher comorbidity and treatment type were associated with incident psychiatric diagnosis. Pharmacotherapy was used in 1392 (64.3%) patients with a psychiatric diagnosis, with antidepressants (46.2%) and anxiolytics (32.8%) being most common. Psychiatric diagnoses increased from 14.8% in 2006-2009 to 21.1% in 2018-2021 (p < 0.001). In almost 20% of patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions, therapy was discontinued after HCC diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly 2 of 10 patients with HCC were diagnosed with a psychiatric condition after cancer diagnosis with unique sociodemographic and clinical risk factors identified. This highlights a risk for increased psychological burden in need of early evaluation and treatment among patients with newly diagnosed HCC.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by impaired renal function and is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. Sheep milk contains several bioactive molecules with protective effects against inflammation and oxidative stress. In the current study, we investigated the potential renoprotective effects of sheep milk and the associated mechanisms of action in an adenine-induced CKD murine model. Sheep milk delayed renal chronic inflammation (e.g., significant reduction in levels of inflammatory factors Vcam1, Icam1, Il6, and Tnfa), fibrosis (significant reduction in levels of fibrosis factors Col1a1, Fn1, and Tgfb), oxidative stress (significant increase in levels of antioxidants and decrease in oxidative markers), mineral disorders, and renal injury in adenine-treated mice (e.g. reduced levels of kidney injury markers NGAL and KIM-1). The combined proteomics and metabolomics analyses showed that sheep milk may affect the metabolic processes of several compounds, including proteins, lipids, minerals, and hormones in mice with adenine-induced chronic kidney disease. In addition, it may regulate the expression of fibrosis-related factors and inflammatory factors through the JAK1/STAT3/HIF-1α signaling pathway, thus exerting its renoprotective effects. Therefore, sheep milk may be beneficial for patients with CKD and should be evaluated in preclinical and clinical studies.

ABSTRACT

The research interest in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) has been surging due to the advantages of safety, abundance, and high electrochemical performance. However, some technique issues, such as dendrites, hydrogen evolution reaction, and corrosion, severely prohibit the development of AZIBs in practical utilizations. The underlying mechanisms regarding electrochemical performance deterioration and structure degradation are too complex to understand, especially when it comes to zinc metal anode-electrolyte interface. Recently, theoretical simulations and in situ characterizations have played a crucial role in AZIBs and are exploited to guide the research on electrolyte engineering and solid electrolyte interphase. Herein, we present a comprehensive review of the current state of the fundamental mechanisms involved in the zinc plating/stripping process and underscore the importance of theoretical simulations and in situ characterizations in mechanism research. Finally, we summarize the challenges and opportunities for AZIBs in practical applications, especially as a stationary energy storage and conversion device in a smart grid.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and a history of cancer, retrospective studies suggest that exposure to immunosuppressive agents does not increase the risk of incident (recurrent or new) cancer compared to unexposed patients. SAPPHIRE is a prospective registry aimed at addressing this issue. METHODS: Since 2016, patients with IBD and confirmed index cancer prior to enrollment were followed annually. Patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation at enrollment, or recurrent cancer within five years were excluded. Primary outcome was development of incident cancer related to exposure to immunosuppressive medications. RESULTS: Among 305 patients (47% male, 88% white), median age at IBD diagnosis and cancer were 32 and 52 years, respectively. Index cancers were solid organ (46%), dermatologic (32%), gastrointestinal (13%), and hematologic (9%). During median follow-up of 4.8 years, 210 (69%) were exposed to immunosuppressive therapy and 46 (15%) developed incident cancers (25 new, 21 recurrent). In unadjusted analysis, the crude rate of incident cancer in unexposed patients was 2.58/100 person-years versus 4.78/100 PY (relative risk 1.85, 95% CI 0.92-3.73) for immunosuppression exposed patients. In a proportional hazards model adjusting for sex, smoking history, age and stage at index malignancy, and non-melanoma skin cancer, no significant association was found between receipt of immunosuppression and incident cancer (adjusted hazard ratio, aHR, 1.41, 95% CI: 0.69-2.90), or with any major drug class. CONCLUSION: In this interim analysis of patients with IBD and a history of cancer, despite numerically elevated aHRs, we did not find a statistically significant association between subsequent exposure to immunosuppressive therapies and development of incident cancers.

ABSTRACT

During the infusion process of a glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting composite hose, the viscosity of its resin matrix undergoes temporal variations. Consequently, if the impact of resin viscosity changes over time on the internal resin fluidity is not considered during the infusion process, this may result in the incomplete impregnation of the hose, characterized by the presence of numerous voids. This phenomenon adversely affects the quality of the pipe's curing and forming process. Therefore, based on the characteristic variations in resin viscosity, this paper considers the changes in fluidity caused by the resin's temporal evolution within the material. We establish a finite element simulation model to calculate and analyze the overall infusion effects of resin viscosity changes during the hose infusion process. Furthermore, based on the predicted analysis, a variable parameter infusion strategy is proposed to increase resin impregnation in the hose, thereby reducing internal void content and subsequently improving the quality of material curing and forming.

BMP9 has demonstrated significant osteogenic potential. In this study, we investigated the effect of Leptin on BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation. Firstly, we found Leptin was decreased during BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation and serum Leptin concentrations were increased in the ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Both in vitro and in vivo, exogenous expression of Leptin inhibited the process of osteogenic differentiation, whereas silencing Leptin enhanced. Exogenous Leptin could increase the malonylation of ß-catenin. However, BMP9 could increase the level of Sirt5 and subsequently decrease the malonylation of ß-catenin; the BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation was inhibited by silencing Sirt5. These data suggested that Leptin can inhibit the BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation, which may be mediated through reducing the activity of Wnt/ß-catenin signalling via down-regulating Sirt5 to increase the malonylation level of ß-catenin partly.

ABSTRACT

Two levels of nucleic acids-based isothermal amplification normally require a long reaction time due to the low concentration of catalyst, which limits its practical application. A sensitive fluorescence assay of chloramphenicol (CAP) was developed coupled with two-level isothermal amplification using a self-powered catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) and entropy-driven circuit (EDC). CAP can bind with its aptamer to open its closed structure. The opened hairpin can initiate self-powered CHA and EDC. The product of CHA can circularly catalyze the CHA with increasing concentration. In principle, the product of CHA plays the role of catalyst and increases with the progression of the reaction. Compared with the normal two levels of amplification, the amplification efficiency of our strategy is much higher due to the self-powered reaction by the CHA product. Thus, the reaction time is shortened to 110 min in this strategy. Moreover, the detection limit for CAP can achieve 0.1 pM and shows promising prospects for practical application.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Rohdea pachynema F.T.Wang & Tang (R. pachynema), is a traditional folk medicine used for the treatment of stomach pain, stomach ulcers, bruises, and skin infections in China. Some of the diseases may relate to microbial infections in traditional applications. However few reports on its antimicrobial properties and bioactive components. AIM OF THE STUDY: To identify its bioactive constituents against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vitro and in vivo, and its mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anti-MRSA ingredient 6α-O-[ß-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-D-quinovopyranosyl]-(25S)-5α-spirostan-3ß-ol (XQS) was obtained from R. pachynema by phytochemical isolation. Subsequently, XQS underwent screening using the broth microdilution method and growth inhibition curves to assess its antibacterial activity. The mechanism of XQS was evaluated by multigeneration induction, biofilm resistance assay, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and metabolomics. Additionally, a mouse skin infection model was established in vivo. RESULTS: 26 compounds were identified from the R. pachynema, in which anti-MRSA spirostane saponin (XQS) was reported for the first time with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 8 µg/mL. XQS might bind to peptidoglycan (PGN) of the cell wall, phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) of the cell membrane, then destroying the cell wall and the cell membrane, resulting in reduced membrane fluidity and membrane depolarization. Furthermore, XQS affected MRSA lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and ABC transporters by metabolomics analysis, which targeted cell walls and membranes causing less susceptibility to drug resistance. Furthermore, XQS (8 mg/kg) recovered skin wounds in mice infected by MRSA effectively, superior to vancomycin (8 mg/kg). CONCLUSIONS: XQS showed anti-MRSA bioactivity in vitro and in vivo, and its mechanism association with cell walls and membranes was reported for the first, which supported the traditional uses of R. pachynema and explained its sensitivity to MRSA.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Brachytherapy has been indicated as an alternative option for treating cystic craniopharyngiomas (CPs). The potential benefits of brachytherapy for CPs have not yet been clarified. The purpose of this work was to conduct a meta-analysis to analyze the long-term efficacy and adverse reactions profile of brachytherapy for CPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The relevant databases were searched to collect the clinical trials on brachytherapy in patients with CPs. Included studies were limited to publications in full manuscript form with at least 5-year median follow-up, and adequate reporting of treatment outcomes and adverse reactions data. Stata 12.0 was used for data analysis. RESULTS: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 6 clinical trials involving 266 patients with CPs were included in this meta-analysis. The minimum average follow-up was 5 years. The results of the meta-analysis showed that 1-year, 2-3 years and 5 years progression free survival rates (PFS) are 75% (95%CI: 66-84%), 62% (95%CI: 52-72%) and 57% (95%CI: 22-92%), respectively. At the last follow-up, less than 16% of patients with visual outcomes worser than baseline in all included studies. While, for endocrine outcomes, less than 32% of patients worser than baseline level. CONCLUSION: In general, based on the above results, brachytherapy should be considered as a good choice for the treatment of CP.

ABSTRACT

Tap dance generates forces and joint motions that can lead to injury; however, little is known about the magnitude of load across different tap steps. The purpose of this study was to calculate peak vertical forces, average vertical foot velocities, and maximum/minimum ankle angles produced by tap dancers with different levels of experience performing the toe cannon, heel cannon, flap, and cramp roll. This prospective cross-sectional study included 14 female tap dancers aged ≥18 years with varying tap experience. Participants were recorded by three cameras while performing a choreographed tap combination containing four steps of interest on a force platform. Adjusting for experience and dancer-level clustering, we identified the steps-cramp roll and toe cannon-that had the highest peak vertical ground reaction force, angles, and velocities compared to flap and heel cannon. There was no effect of experience. The results supported our hypothesis and provide new insights into step production. Over time, the larger forces associated with these steps could pose an increased risk of injury to bones and joints when compared to smaller forces, which may suggest the importance of adjusting routines to reduce or avoid injury.

Piezocatalysis-induced dye degradation has garnered significant attention as an effective method for addressing wastewater treatment challenges. In our study, we employed a room-temperature sonochemical method to synthesize piezoelectric barium titanate nanoparticles (BaTiO3: BTO) with varying levels of Li doping. This approach not only streamlined the sample preparation process but also significantly reduced the overall time required for synthesis, making it a highly efficient and practical method. One of the key findings was the exceptional performance of the Li-doped BTO nanoparticles. With 20 mg of Li additive, we achieved 90 % removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye within a relatively short timeframe of 150 minutes, all while subjecting the sample to ultrasonic vibration. This rapid and efficient dye degradation was further evidenced by the calculated kinetic rate constant, which indicated seven times faster degradation rate compared to pure BTO. The enhanced piezoelectric performance observed in the Li-doped BTO nanoparticles can be attributed to the strategic substitution of Li atoms, which facilitated a more efficient transfer of charge charges at the interface. Overall, our study underscores the potential of piezocatalysis coupled with advanced materials like Li-doped BTO nanoparticles as a viable and promising solution for wastewater treatment, offering both efficiency and environmental sustainability.

ABSTRACT

We established experimental models of manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) exposure in vitro and in vivo, and addressed the effects of manganese and iron combined exposure on the synaptic function of pheochromocytoma derived cell line 12 (PC12) cells and rat cortex, respectively. We investigated the protective effect of sodium para-aminosalicylate (PAS-Na) on manganese and iron combined neurotoxicity, providing a scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of ferromanganese combined neurotoxicity. Western blot and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) were performed to detect the expression levels of protein and mRNA related to synaptic damage. Y-maze novelty test and balance beam test were used to evaluate the motor and cognitive function of rats. Haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Nissl staining were performed to observe the cortical damage of rats. The results showed that the combined exposure of Mn and Fe in rats led to a synergistic effect, attenuating growth and development, and altering learning and memory as well as motor function. The combination of Mn and Fe also caused damage to the synaptic structure of PC12 cells, which is manifested as swelling of dendrites and axon terminals, and even lead to cell death. PAS-Na displayed some antagonistic effects against the Mn- and Fe-induced synaptic structural damage, growth, learning and memory impairment.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric disorders after liver transplantation (LT) are associated with worse patient and graft outcomes, which may be amplified by inadequate treatment. We aimed to characterize the burden of psychiatric disorders, treatment patterns, and associated financial burden among LT recipients (LTRs). METHODS: IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus for Academics-a large health plan claims database representative of the commercially insured U.S. population-was used to identify psychiatric diagnoses among adult LTRs and assess treatment. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with post-LT psychiatric diagnoses and receipt of pharmacotherapy. Patient financial liability was estimated using adjudicated medical/pharmacy claims for LTRs with and without psychiatric diagnoses. RESULTS: Post-LT psychiatric diagnoses were identified in 395 (29.5%) of 1,338 LTRs, of which 106 (26.8%) were incident cases. Treatment varied, with 67.3% receiving pharmacotherapy, 32.1% psychotherapy, 21.0% combination therapy, and 21.5% no treatment. Among 340 LTRs on psychotropic medications before transplant, 24% did not continue them post-LT. Post-LT psychiatric diagnoses were independently associated with female sex, alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), prolonged LT hospitalization (>2 weeks), and pre-LT psychiatric diagnosis. Incident psychiatric diagnoses were associated with female sex, ALD, and prolonged LT hospitalization. Patients with a post-LT psychiatric diagnosis had higher rates of hospitalization (89.6% vs 81.5%, p<0.001) and financial liability (median $5.5K vs $4.6K USD, p=0.006). Having a psychiatric diagnosis post-LT was independently associated with experiencing high financial liability >$5K. CONCLUSION: Over 1 in 4 LTRs had a psychiatric diagnosis in a large national cohort, yet nearly a quarter received no treatment. LTRs with psychiatric diagnoses experienced increased healthcare utilization and higher financial liability. Sociodemographic and clinical risk factors could inform high-risk subgroups who may benefit from screening and mitigation strategies.

ABSTRACT

Phonon polaritons, the hybrid quasiparticles resulting from the coupling of photons and lattice vibrations, have gained significant attention in the field of layered van der Waals heterostructures. Particular interest has been paid to hetero-bicrystals composed of molybdenum oxide (MoO3) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which feature polariton dispersion tailorable via avoided polariton mode crossings. In this work, we systematically study the polariton eigenmodes in MoO3-hBN hetero-bicrystals self-assembled on ultrasmooth gold using synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy. We experimentally demonstrate that the spectral gap in bicrystal dispersion and corresponding regimes of negative refraction can be tuned by material layer thickness, and we quantitatively match these results with a simple analytic model. We also investigate polaritonic cavity modes and polariton propagation along "forbidden" directions in our microscale bicrystals, which arise from the finite in-plane dimension of the synthesized MoO3 micro-ribbons. Our findings shed light on the unique dispersion properties of polaritons in van der Waals heterostructures and pave the way for applications leveraging deeply sub-wavelength mid-infrared light matter interactions.
