ABSTRACT

The hollow MCM-48 polyethyleneimine carboxyphenylboronic acid molecularly imprinted polymers (H-MPC@MIPs) were synthesized to efficiently and selectively separate and enrich the ovalbumin (OVA) in egg white samples. Polyethyleneimine contained enough active amino groups to increase the amount of boric acid molecules modified to silica nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the materials were etched to enhance the adsorption effect. The H-MPC@MIPs exhibited a rapid adsorption equilibrium rate (within 30 min) and outstanding adsorption capacity for OVA (1334.1 mg g-1). It possessed a good reusability after 5 cycles. In addition, both the high density and the imprinting action of boric acid were essential for enhancing the identification and binding of OVA. The OVA in egg white samples was successfully selectively enriched using this method.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to review and synthesise the evidence of the interventions of patients' and informal caregivers' engagement in managing chronic wounds at home. The research team used a systematic review methodology based on an updated guideline for reporting systematic reviews (PRISMA) and recommendations from the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis. Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial of the Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL, Wanfang (Chinese), and CNKI database (Chinese) were searched from inception to May 2022. The following MESH terms were used: wound healing, pressure ulcer, leg ulcer, diabetic foot, skin ulcer, surgical wound, educational, patient education, counselling, self-care, self-management, social support, and family caregiver. Experimental studies involving participants with chronic wounds (not at risk of wounds) and their informal caregivers were screened. Data were extracted and the narrative was synthesised from the findings of included studies. By screening the above databases, 790 studies were retrieved, and 16 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies were 6 RCTs and ten non-RCTs. Outcomes of chronic wound management included patient indicators, wound indicators, and family/caregiver indicators. Home-based interventions of patients or informal caregivers' engagement in managing chronic wounds at home may effectively improve patient outcomes and change wound care behaviour. What's more, educational/behavioural interventions were the primary type of intervention. Multiform integration of education and skills training on wound care and aetiology-based treatment was delivered to patients and caregivers. Besides, there are no studies entirely targeting elderly patients. Home-based chronic wound care training was important to patients with chronic wounds and their family caregivers, which may advance wound management outcomes. However, the findings of this systematic review were based on relatively small studies. We need more exploration of self and family-oriented interventions in the future, especially for older people affected by chronic wounds.

ABSTRACT

In this study, 3-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CP)-functionalized amino-modified Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@NH2-CP, FNC) magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (FNC@MIPs) were synthesized and applied for the quick identification and selective separation of luteolin (LTL). The structure and morphology were characterized in detail by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating specimen magnetometry (VSM) methods. The FNC@MIPs had a homogeneous shape, excellent magnetic characteristics, quick binding kinetics, a high adsorption capacity, acceptable selectivity, and stable reusability. The solid-phase extraction parameters and preparation conditions were both optimized. Under optimized conditions, the maximal adsorption capacity was 14.26 mg g-1 and the imprinting factor was 3.62. Furthermore, the experimental kinetics data were best fitted with the pseudo-first-order model (R2 = 0.9877), and the Langmuir model could describe the adsorption process (R2 = 0.9979), suggesting a monolayer covering. The practical application of the sorbent for LTL detection in Lonicera japonica Thunb samples showed recoveries in the range of 84.5-108.7%. Therefore, the strategy offers a fresh avenue for the extraction and purification of LTL.

ABSTRACT

As one of the most significant 2D materials, black phosphorus (BP) offers a promising way to manipulate the polarization state of light due to its in-plane anisotropy, however, reconfigurable polarization manipulation is still challenging in simple BP structure. Here, we propose a multilayer metamaterial with twisted BP nanostructures and numerically study its circular dichroism (CD) and circular birefringence (CB) responses. The dependences of the circular polarization responses in the twisted BP metamaterial have been fully investigated on geometrical and material parameters. The giant tunability enables the twisted BP nanostructure to be attractive for constructing BP-based metamaterials devices, such as polarizers, biosensors and modulators.

ABSTRACT

The increase in landfill temperature often results in shear strength reduction of both the solid waste and the liner, which leads to slope instability. However, very few landfill slope analysis methods can simultaneously consider the effect of temperature on the shear strength of the waste solid and the liner. In this study, based on the strength parameters of the liner and waste with temperature, a wedge method for translational failure analysis of landfills considering temperature increase was established. The results showed that rising temperatures caused by biochemical degradation at the bottom and middle of the landfill reduced the anti-slide force of back slope more than that of bottom slope. With the leachate level increasing, the effect of temperature rise on landfill stability became obvious. The feasibility of the proposed wedge method was verified by the engineering case study of Xiaping Landfill, Shenzhen, China. This study probably provides important guidance for the design, operation and management of municipal solid waste landfills.

ABSTRACT

Slope instability occurs in landfills owing to increased internal temperatures. However, strength characteristic tests for solid waste (SW) and landfill slope stability (SS) calculations that consider temperature variations are scarce in the literature. In this study, we conducted triaxial tests on SW under a range of temperature conditions and proposed the circular slide method (CSM) for calculating SS in consideration of temperature effects. SW cohesion decreased linearly with increasing temperature, whereas the internal friction angle remained essentially unchanged. Our results showed that higher temperatures reduced the SW shear strength, changing the most dangerous sliding arc away from the slope toe. The landfill slope safety factor decreased by more than 20% with an increase of the maximum temperature from 20°C to 50°C. Reduction of the leachate level (LL) led to a decrease in the landfill high-temperature zone and the safety factor increased according to LL and temperature distribution. If cooling pipes are used to control the SW temperature, we recommend arranging the cooling pipes on the landfill liner. The proposed CSM can be used to analyse landfill SS.
