ABSTRACT

Introduction: Given the rising prevalence of chronic liver disease (CLD), it is increasingly important to understand its impact on surgical outcomes. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of CLD on short-term outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases undergoing simultaneous surgery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients with colorectal cancer and liver metastases who underwent simultaneous resection between January 2013 and June 2022. Patients were divided into the CLD and non-CLD groups. Data regarding short-term surgical outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 187 patients were included. After propensity score matching, there were 42 patients in each group, and the basic characteristics of the two groups were similar. Patients with CLD had a significantly greater incidence of postoperative complications (47.6% vs. 26.2%; P = 0.042). The operation times of the CLD and non-CLD groups were similar (297 vs. 307.5 min, P = 0.537), and the blood loss was comparable between the two groups (250 vs. 155 ml, P = 0.066). No significant differences were observed between the two groups in pneumonia (P > 0.999), urinary infection rate (P > 0.999), ileus rate (P = 0.474), wound infection rates (P > 0.999), abdominal infection rate (P = 0.533), anastomotic leakage rate (P > 0.999), digestive hemorrhage rate (P > 0.999), bile leakage rate (P > 0.999), hepatic hemorrhage rate (P > 0.999), reoperation rate (P > 0.999), intensive care rate (P > 0.999), or severe liver failure (P > 0.999). There were no deaths in the two groups. CLD significantly prolonged the length of hospital stay (P = 0.011). Discussion: CLD is an important factor affecting postoperative complications in patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases undergoing simultaneous surgery. Considering the large number of patients with CLD in China, more attention and medical care should be provided to patients with CLD who require simultaneous resection of colorectal cancer with synchronous liver metastases.

Introduction: During plant evolution, nucleotide-binding sites (NBS) and leucine-rich repeat (LRR) genes have made significant contributions to plant disease resistance. With many high-quality plant genomes sequenced, identification and comprehensive analyses of NBS-LRR genes at whole genome level are of great importance to understand and utilize them. Methods: In this study, we identified the NBS-LRR genes of 23 representative species at whole genome level, and researches on NBS-LRR genes of four monocotyledonous grass species, Saccharum spontaneum, Saccharum officinarum, Sorghum bicolor and Miscanthus sinensis, were focused. Results and discussion: We found that whole genome duplication, gene expansion, and allele loss could be factors affecting the number of NBS-LRR genes in the species, and whole genome duplication is likely to be the main cause of the number of NBS-LRR genes in sugarcane. Meanwhile, we also found a progressive trend of positive selection on NBS-LRR genes. These studies further elucidated the evolutionary pattern of NBS-LRR genes in plants. Transcriptome data from multiple sugarcane diseases revealed that more differentially expressed NBS-LRR genes were derived from S. spontaneum than from S. officinarum in modern sugarcane cultivars, and the proportion was significantly higher than the expected. This finding reveals that S. spontaneum has a greater contribution to disease resistance for modern sugarcane cultivars. In addition, we observed allelespecific expression of seven NBS-LRR genes under leaf scald, and 125 NBS-LRR genes responding to multiple diseases were identified. Finally, we built a plant NBS-LRR gene database to facilitate subsequent analysis and use of NBSLRR genes obtained here. In conclusion, this study complemented and completed the research of plant NBS-LRR genes, and discussed how NBS-LRR genes responding to sugarcane diseases, which provided a guide and genetic resources for further research and utilization of NBS-LRR genes.

ABSTRACT

Nitrogen (N) is a vital mineral component that can restrict the growth and development of plants if supplied inappropriately. In order to benefit their growth and development, plants have complex physiological and structural responses to changes in their nitrogen supply. As higher plants have multiple organs with varying functions and nutritional requirements, they coordinate their responses at the whole-plant level based on local and long-distance signaling pathways. It has been suggested that phytohormones are signaling substances in such pathways. The nitrogen signaling pathway is closely associated with phytohormones such as auxin (AUX), abscisic acid (ABA), cytokinins (CKs), ethylene (ETH), brassinosteroid (BR), strigolactones (SLs), jasmonic acid (JA), and salicylic acid (SA). Recent research has shed light on how nitrogen and phytohormones interact to modulate physiology and morphology. This review provides a summary of the research on how phytohormone signaling affects root system architecture (RSA) in response to nitrogen availability. Overall, this review contributes to identifying recent developments in the interaction between phytohormones and N, as well as serving as a foundation for further study.

Introduction: Traditional chemical control methods pose a damaging effect on farmland ecology, and their long-term use has led to the development of pest resistance. Methods: Here, we analyzed the correlations and differences in the microbiome present in the plant and soil of sugarcane cultivars exhibiting different insect resistance to investigate the role played by microbiome in crop insect resistance. We evaluated the microbiome of stems, topsoil, rhizosphere soil, and striped borers obtained from infested stems, as well as soil chemical parameters. Results and Discussion: Results showed that microbiome diversity was higher in stems of insect-resistant plants, and contrast, lower in the soil of resistant plants, with fungi being more pronounced than bacteria. The microbiome in plant stems was almost entirely derived from the soil. The microbiome of insect-susceptible plants and surrounding soil tended to change towards that of insect-resistant plants after insect damage. Insects' microbiome was mainly derived from plant stems and partly from the soil. Available potassium showed an extremely significant correlation with soil microbiome. This study validated the role played by the microbiome ecology of plant-soil-insect system in insect resistance and provided a pre-theoretical basis for crop resistance control.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To explore the long-term oncological safety of using self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) as a bridge to surgery for acute obstructive colorectal cancer by comparing the pathological results of emergency surgery (ES) with elective surgery after the placement of SEMS. METHODS: Studies comparing SEMS as a bridge to surgery with emergency surgery for acute obstructive colorectal cancer were retrieved through the databases of Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane libraries, and a meta-analysis was conducted based on the pathological results of the two treatments. Risk ratios (OR) or mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for the outcomes under random effects model. RESULTS: A total of 27 studies were included, including 3 randomized controlled studies, 2 prospective studies, and 22 retrospective studies, with a total of 3737 patients. The presence of perineural invasion (RR = 0.58, 95% CI 0.48, 0.71, P < 0.00001), lymphovascular invasion (RR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.47, 0.99, P = 0.004) and vascular invasion (RR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.45, 0.99, P = 0.04) in SEMS group were significantly higher than those in ES group, and there was no significant difference in lymphatic invasion (RR = 0.92, 95% CI 0.77, 1.09, P = 0.33). The number of lymph nodes harvested in SEMS group was significantly higher than that in ES group (MD = - 3.18, 95% CI - 4.47, - 1.90, P < 0.00001). While no significant difference was found in the number of positive lymph nodes (MD = - 0.11, 95% CI - 0.63, 0.42, P = 0.69) and N stage [N0 (RR = 1.03, 95% CI 0.92, 1.15, P = 0.60), N1 (RR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.87, 1.14, P = 0.91), N2 (RR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.77, 1.15, P = 0.53)]. CONCLUSIONS: SEMS implantation in patients with acute malignant obstructive colorectal cancer may lead to an increase in adverse tumor pathological characteristics, and these characteristics are mostly related to the poor prognosis of colorectal cancer. Although the adverse effect of SEMS on long-term survival has not been demonstrated, their adverse effects cannot be ignored. The use of SEMS as the preferred treatment for patients with resectable obstructive colorectal cancer remains to be carefully weighed, especially when patients are young or the surgical risk is not very high.

BACKGROUND: Intersphincteric resection (ISR) has been a preferable alternative to abdominoperineal resection (APR) for anal preservation in patients with low rectal cancer. Laparoscopic ISR and robotic ISR have been widely used with the proposal of 2 cm or even 1 cm rule of distal free margin and the development of minimally invasive technology. The aim of this review was to describe the newest advancements of ISR. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed to identify studies on ISR techniques, preoperative chemoradiotherapy (PCRT), complications, oncological outcomes, and functional outcomes and thereby to summarize relevant information and controversies involved in ISR. RESULTS: Although PCRT is employed to avoid positive circumferential resection margin (CRM) and decrease local recurrence, it tends to engender damage of anorectal function and patients' quality of life (QoL). Common complications after ISR include anastomotic leakage (AL), anastomotic stricture (AS), urinary retention, fistula, pelvic sepsis, and prolapse. CRM involvement is the most important predictor for local recurrence. Preoperative assessment and particularly rectal endosonography are essential for selecting suitable patients. Anal dysfunction is associated with age, PCRT, location and growth of anastomotic stoma, tumour stage, and resection of internal sphincter. CONCLUSIONS: The ISR technique seems feasible for selected patients with low rectal cancer. However, the postoperative QoL as a result of functional disorder should be fully discussed with patients before surgery.

ABSTRACT

From December 2012 to February 2013, two outbreaks of acute respiratory disease caused by HAdV-7 were reported in China. We investigated possible transmission links between these two seemingly unrelated outbreaks by integration of epidemiological and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data. WGS analyses showed that the HAdV-7 isolates from the two outbreaks were genetically indistinguishable; however, a 12 bp deletion in the virus-associated RNA gene distinguished the outbreak isolates from other HAdV-7 isolates. Outbreak HAdV-7 isolates demonstrated increased viral replication compared to non-outbreak associated HAdV-7 isolate. Epidemiological data supported that the first outbreak was caused by introduction of the novel HAdV-7 virus by an infected recruit upon arrival at the training base. Nosocomial transmission by close contacts was the most likely source leading to onset of the second HAdV-7 outbreak, establishing the apparent transmission link between the outbreaks. Our findings imply that in-hospital contact investigations should be encouraged to reduce or interrupt further spread of infectious agents when treating outbreak cases, and WGS can provide useful information guiding infection-control interventions.
