ABSTRACT

The long term intake of the ethyl alcohol by rats caused the morphologic changes of plano-epithelial and subepithelial layer of the larynx mucosa. The most expressed lesions were the disconnection of the epithelial structures and its taking into pieces. The changes were accentuated by longer alcohol intake, especially in morphology, size and color.

ABSTRACT

The total amount of phospholipids of the stored blood erythrocytes does not change during the first week of storage. After the second and the third week of storage the changes are only insignificant. During the fourth week this amount decreases by 25%. Detailed analysis of inositol phospholipids shows that balance of the phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle is shifted towards dephosphorylation. The decrease in phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns-4,5-P2) is accompanied by the increase in phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PtdIns-4-P) and phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns). The total amount of inositol phospholipids does not change. The increase in PtdIns-4-P is accompanied by the appearance of echinoidal forms of erythrocytes. The results of this study suggest that PtdIns-4-P can be considered as one of the important factors which determine the shape of erythrocytes.

ABSTRACT

Since the lathyrogen beta-aminopropionitrile is known to affect the fibrogenic and physical properties of collagen polymers, we have examined its effects on collagenous components of methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma in rat. Lathyrogen treatment reduced total collagen content of tumours from approximately 17 to 12 mg collagen/g tissue. It also proportionately increased the solubility of specific collagen fractions, the summation of all extractable solubilized collagens reflecting 37 and 67% of total collagen content for control and lathyric tumours, respectively. Although lathyrogen had no significant effect on the growth and overall size of fibrosarcoma, histological studies confirmed that changes had occurred to appearance and distribution of collagenous components of extracellular matrix.

ABSTRACT

It was found that chronic intoxication of rats with ethanol results in an increase of prolyl hydroxylase activity in liver and serum of the experimental animals. The increase of enzyme activity precedes the morphological symptoms of liver damage. The possibility arises that the assay of prolyl hydroxylase in serum or in liver biopsy samples could be useful for the diagnosis of the tendency of some individuals to develop liver cirrhosis induced by ethanol.

ABSTRACT

In the defect of the resected part of the abdominal aorta in 36 dogs vascular prostheses were implanted. The prostheses were bilaterally veloured of the Dallon type, produced in Poland. The process of healing of the vascular prostheses proceeded two stages. In the first stage the structures were produced. In the second stage the connective tissue developed and endothelium cells on the surface of the newly produced internal layer. The analysis of morphological test results allows us to state that in the process of reconstruction of the arteries we have to the with a certain balance in the regenerative and reperative processes.

ABSTRACT

The effect of platelet-breakdown products on the process of regeneration of mechanically injured anterior tibial muscles was investigated in rabbits. It was found that repeated injection of the platelet homogenate into the site of the damage accelerated muscle regeneration.

ABSTRACT

The development of a new intima in polyester prostheses Dallon implanted into the abdominal part of dog's aorta was tested in the scanning and transmission electron microscope. It was proved that during the first month of the experiment morphoetic elements of blood appeared on the graft surface and later within 36 months smooth muscle cells, collagen fibres and small amounts of elasticin could be found. The process of endothelialization began in the 4 month and after 12 months the graft was totally covered by endothelium. The picture in the SEM especially in the central part differed from the picture of normal arterial endothelium.

ABSTRACT

Eighty four male Buffalo rats bearing transplantable Morris 5123 hepatoma were used for the experiment. Half of the animals were given into the tumor BCG vaccine (final dose 2.2 X 10(6) living mycobacteria), the other 42 rats after BCG underwent surgical removal of the hind leg together with the tumor. Though the immunotherapy reduced the size of lung metastases of the tumor it did not, however diminish the survival rate of the animals. Multiple BCG doses associated with the surgical procedure prevented dissemination of the tumor cells and prolonged the survival of rats up to the 100th day of the follow-up.
