ABSTRACT
El material contiene consejos que consideramos pueden ser útiles para evitar o disminuir los accidentes en el hogar. Está dirigido, fundamentalmente a médicos y enfermeras de la familia, pediatras, maestros, administradores de salud, especialmente en el área materno-infantil y a todos aquellos que se solidaricen con esta campaña contra este flagelo que tantas vidas, lesiones e incapacitados cobra en nuestra sociedad.

Los autores se basan en las observaciones hechas por los estudios de crecimiento y desarrollo realizados en nuestra patria (1979) y plantean como objetivo el estudio de un grupo de jovenes de un area de salud (adolescentes de 10 a 15 anos).Se estudian las condiciones socioeconomicas, habitos toxicos, maduracion sexual, asi como se valoran la maduracion osea y el comportamiento del peso y talla de los mismos. Se encontro que la edad de aparicion de la menarquia es acorde con las normas cubanas para zonas urbanas. Ademas, que las valoraciones de peso y talla coinciden con nuestras curvas de acuerdo con la edad y sexo. Los habitos toxicos mas frecuentes fueron el cafe y la bebida

During the years 1972 to 1974, a great scale study was carried out on development and growth taking at random a stratified sample of multiple stages of 50,311 children from birth to 20 years. Fifteen anthropometric dimensions were considered and evaluation was made of sexual development in both sexes. In girls, the age of menarche was registered. An X-ray of the hand was taken to 10% of the sample. One year later, 30% of the sample was X-rayed again to determine speed of growth. Response of the population was close to 94%. The importance of a national system of growth is recognized, together with the colaboration of the orgaism of masses to achieve these purposes. Information related with some of measurements reported is offered and comments related with these findings are made.

Within the sample of the National Investigation of Development and Growth in Cuba in 1972, the mean age of menarche in girls and the different stages of sexual development in both sexes were analyzed. For menarche, the status method was employed with logit analysis in a national aleatory sample that comprised 13,143 girls. The mean age for menarche was 13.01 +/- 0.02 years with a value of 12.77 for urban population and 13.26 for the rural. The study was also made by provinces. The sexual development, according with the stages of Tanner's method was investigated. The sample included about 26,000 individuals from 8 to 18 years old. The results obtained for the different percentiles with the logit analysis are offered. The importance that adolescents have a different maturation rhythm; precocious, average and late, becomes evident and the importance of the knowledge of these variants in normal individuals by the personnel in charge is pointed out.
