ABSTRACT

The relationship between vitamin E supplementation rate and colour stability was investigated using 70 mixed sex 6-8 month old crossbred lambs. An initial group of 10 were slaughtered, while the remainder were fed a pellet ration containing either 30, 150, 275 or 400 IU vitamin E/kg ration or on green pasture for 56 days. After slaughter, carcases were halved; one side packed fresh (5 days) and the other in CO2 (21 days), both at 2°C. Five muscles were set for retail display for 96 h. The oxy/metmyoglobin ratio was measured every 12 h. Colour stability increased with increasing muscle vitamin E until an apparent maximum effect for vitamin E concentration (3.5-4.0mg α-tocopherol/kg tissue) was reached beyond which no further response was evident. This was reached within 3-4 weeks (275 IU treatment), and meat from these lambs should reach 60 h retail display with a satisfactory surface colour. This effect was most apparent in aerobic muscle types and meat aged post slaughter.

ABSTRACT

Minerais são componentes essenciais na dieta, exercendo diversas funções no organismo animal onde o uso de sais orgânicos visa aumentar a disponibilidade dos inerais no trato digestório. O perfil metabólico auxilia na avaliação de índices produtivos, para tanto, se faz análises de componentes bioquímicos do sangue. O objetivo foi estudar os efeitos que fontes orgânicas e inorgânicas de cobre e enxofre possuem nos parâmetros bioquímicos. O experimento foi realizado na FZEA/USP, para tanto 40 ovinos foram distribuídos em 10tratamentos: 1) dieta basal; 2) dieta contendo Mo; 3) dieta basal+ Cu inorg + S inorg; 4) dieta basal + Cu inorg + S org; 5) dieta basal + Cu org + S inorg; 6) dieta basal + Cu org + S org; 7) dieta com Mo + Cu inorg + S inorg; 8) dieta com Mo + Cu inorg + S org; 9) dieta com Mo + Cu org + S inorg; 10) dieta com Mo + Cu org + S org. De acordo com cada tratamento houve a inclusão de 10mgkg-1 de MS de Cu inorgânico ou orgânico ou 10 mg kg-1 de MS de Mo ou 0,2% de S inorgânico ou orgânico. Os animais receberam dieta única duas vezes ao dia com inclusão de volumoso num total de 3% do peso vivo. O experimento teve duração de 84 dias, com coletas a cada 28 dias para estudo de glicose, ureia, albumina, colesterol, triglicerídeos. Os parâmetros foram analisados com estrutura fatorial 2 x 2 x 2 (com e sem Mo, Cu orgânico e inorgânico e S orgânico e inorgânico) e uma dieta basal e uma basal mais molibdênio, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com um nível de significância de 5%. Os teores séricos de glicose, ureia, albumina e colesterol não apresentaram diferença significativa entre tratamentos e tempo, tão pouco foram influenciados (p>0.05) pelos tratamentos, sendo as médias 64,8mg dl-1; 30,0mg dl-1; 2,78mg L-1; 72,2mg dl-1respectivamente, apresentando-se dentro da normalidade. Minerals are essential components in the diet, exercising various functions in the animal. There are many studies to find better results for the organic sources of minerals, and one of the reasons for that is to avoid the negative interactions. The metabolic profile helps in assessment of production indices, therefore analyzes blood biochemical components. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of organic and inorganic copper and sulphur supplementation on blood biochemical parameters in sheep. The experiment was conducted at the FZEA/USP. Total 40 weaned sheep were divided in a completely randomized design with 10 treatments: 1) basal diet; 2) basal diet plus Mo; 3) basal diet + inorganic Cu + inorganic S; 4) basal diet + inorganic Cu + organic S; 5) basal diet + organic Cu + inorganic S; 6) basal diet + organic Cu + organic S; 7) diet plus Mo + inorganic Cu + inorganic S; 8) diet plus Mo + inorganic Cu + organic S; 9) diet plus Mo + organic Cu + inorganic S; 10) diet plus organic Cu + organic S. According each treatment was added 10mg kg-1 MS inorganic or organic Cu or 10mg kg-1 MS Mo or 0.2% S inorganic or organic. The animals were fed twice a day, a total of 3% of body weight. The experiment lasted 84 days, blood was sampled every 28 days to study glucose, urea, albumin, cholesterol and triglycerides. The parameters were analyzed with factorial structure 2 x 2 x 2 (with and without Mo, organic and inorganic Cu and organic and inorganic S) and a basal diet and a basal diet plus Mo, with 5% significance. Serum levels of glucose, urea, albumin and cholesterol showed no significant difference between treatment and time (p> 0.05). It observed means of 64.8mg dl- 1; 30.0mg dl -1; 2.78mg L -1; 72.2mg dl- 1 respectively for glucose, urea, albumin and cholesterol. Serum levels of triglycerides in the treatments (28.8; 34.8; 30.8; 36.9; 34.3; 27.0; 31.6; 32.1; 34.6; 31.1mg dl- 1) were influenced by interaction Cu x S, triglycerides decreased...

ABSTRACT

A 4 × 3 factorial experiment (n=8 pigs per treatment combination) was conducted with 96 female Landrace × Large White pigs to examine the required level of dietary vitamin E and optimum feeding duration before slaughter to maximise muscle vitamin E content in the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle. The respective factors were four dietary levels of vitamin E (supplemented as dl-α-tocopheryl acetate; 35, 300, 500, and 700 IU/kg) and three feeding durations (14, 28 and 42 days before slaughter). Vitamin E concentration in the LTL was maximised at 6 mg/kg, which was achieved by feeding a 700 IU vitamin E diet for 28 days before slaughter (P<0.001). There was no further increase in the vitamin E content of the LTL by feeding the high vitamin E diet more than 28 days before slaughter.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations are often associated with rectal pouch fistulas. Surgical correction requires accurate evaluation of the presence and position of such fistulas. Fluoroscopy is currently the chosen modality for the detection of fistulas. The role of MRI is unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of MR versus fluoroscopic fistulography in the pre-operative evaluation of infants with anorectal malformation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a pilot study of infants requiring defunctioning colostomy for initial management of anorectal malformation. Dynamic sagittal steady-state free-precession MRI of the pelvis was acquired during introduction of saline into the mucous fistulas. Findings were compared among MR fistulography, fluoroscopic fistulography and intraoperative inspection. RESULTS: Eight children were included. Median age at fistulography was 15 weeks, inter-quartile range 13-20 weeks; all were boys. There was full agreement among MR fistulography, fluoroscopic fistulography and surgical findings. CONCLUSION: The pilot data suggest that MR fistulography is promising in the pre-operative evaluation of children with anorectal malformation.

ABSTRACT

Besides HPV infection, the progression to cervical cancer also depends on the host immune response. HLA-G molecules are involved in the inhibition of cell-mediated immune responses and may permit the development of an infection in the female cervical tract. The aim of this study was to explore the possible influence of the two HLA-G polymorphisms located on the 3'UTR on the susceptibility to cervical cancer and risk factors in Brazilian patients. Polymorphism analysis (14 bp In/Del and +3142C/G) was performed by PCR. A total of 105 cervical samples were tested, 50 without lesions and 55 with lesions; 22 with high grade (HSIL) and 33 with invasive cancer (ICC). The polymorphisms (∗)Del/Del was associated with a decreased risk of developing ICC in smokers and (∗)In and (∗)In/In were associated with an increased risk of HSIL and a higher risk of ICC in smokers. The genotype (∗)In/Del was associated with the increased risk of HSIL only among women with a family history of cancer. The haplotypes (∗)In/G and (∗)Del/G were associated with increased and decreased risk of HSIL and cervical cancer, respectively. In conclusion, the 3'UTR of HLA-G is associated with an increased risk of developing cervical cancer, especially in smokers.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of computerised tomography imaging (CT scan), for carcase composition determination, on the oxy/metmyoglobin ratio, hue and L(∗), a(∗) and b(∗) scores of M. longissimus dorsi from both beef and lamb. Beef and lamb M. longissimus dorsi were divided into four proportions and randomly allocated to one of the following treatments; CT 30 day aged; CT fresh; control 30 day aged; control fresh. Colour measurements were made over a 96h retail display period. CT scan had little effect on the colour of both lamb and beef across all colour parameters. There was a small negative affect observed in CT aged samples (P<0.05) for ratio, hue, a(∗) and b(∗) values, however these differences were so small that they are unlikely to impact upon the commercial shelf-life of the product. Other factors such as aging, species and vitamin E concentration play a much greater role in colour stability than CT. Aged M. longissimus dorsi clearly had a worse colour stability than the fresh packaged samples, while beef was a lot more colour stable than lamb. It appears that CT scan for the purpose of body composition determination will not have any commercially relevant impact on colour stability of both beef and lamb.

ABSTRACT

The interaction of low molecular weight alcohols with low density lipoprotein (LDL) has been studied using amide I band-fitting, thermal profiling and two-dimensional infrared correlation spectroscopy (2D-IR). At 0.3 M alcohol, no changes in secondary structure are observed. In the presence of 1 M alcohol, ethanol and propanol decreases protein denaturation temperature and produces changes in the amide I thermal profiles of protein components and in the lipid bands. The 2D-IR synchronous map corresponding to protein or lipid component at 20-37 degrees C suggests differences in the presence of propanol. The asynchronous map corresponding to the lipid component indicates changes in bandwidth, compatible with a more fluid environment. In the 37-80 degrees C temperature range the thermal profile is different in the presence of propanol, both for the lipid and protein components. The results presented show that when alcohols affect the protein component, the lipid spectrum also varies pointing to an effect on the lipid-protein interaction.

ABSTRACT

O estudo descreve um conjunto de nove projetos que se caracterizam como iniciativas de inovaçäo do ensino de enfermagem em doze países da América Latina. Faz reflexäo acerca do propósito destes projetos, no sentido de incorporar concepçöes pedagógicas crítica-reflexivas e metodologias ativas de ensino e analisa os aspectos conceituais, as estratégias e os modelos gerenciais adotados pelos mesmos. Aborda as características comuns relativas à oferta de cursos na modalidade semi-presencial e à distância e analisa as metodologias de ensino que enfocam a relaçäo professor/aluno enquanto relaçäo que fortalece a aprendizagem independente e em grupo, estabelecido pelos projetos, o qual busca fortalecer relaçöes horizontais, incorporando tecnologia e ensino telemático. Conclui pela indicaçäo da iniciativa como uma estratégia adequada para contribuir com a construçäo de novos modelos de formaçäo de pessoal de enfermagem.
