ABSTRACT

Background@#The emerging practice of tele-AAC (telepractice in augmentative and alternative communication) is gaining attention. Mapping existing research is necessary to help guide clinicians, characterize knowledge gaps, and identify future research directions.@*Objectives@#This study aimed to describe tele-AAC studies' quantity, research characteristics (i.e., rationale, objectives, methodology), and investigated services (i.e., service type, provider, mode, etc.). @*Methodology@#The scoping review involved four phases (search, selection, extraction, synthesis) and covered published and unpublished studies disseminated between 2002-2021. Information sources searched include 12 databases or repositories and six conference websites. For selection and extraction, two independent reviewers reviewed each document and the team resolved discrepancies by consensus. The extracted data were coded and synthesized quantitatively and narratively@*Results@#Thirty unique studies were included. The majority were published (n = 24; 80%), conducted in developed countries (n = 29; 97%), investigated service efficacy (n = 21; 70%) and/or stakeholders experiences (n = 18; 60%), used experimental designs (n = 19; 63%), and involved 2-3 AAC users (n = 10; 33%). The studies focused on training and/or coaching services (n = 19; 63%), high-tech AAC (n = 20; 67%), developmental disabilities (n = 20; 67%), and services provided by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) (n = 15; 50%) or AAC researchers (n = 10; 33%). Most services were synchronous (n = 20; 67%) and home-based (n = 20; 67%). @*Conclusion@#Telepractice offers multiple, innovative ways to maximize AAC access and outcomes. Although preliminary data are available, the investigated populations, settings, and service delivery modes can be more diverse. Future researchers are recommended to use less bias-prone designs.

ABSTRACT

Salmonella species is the causative agent of typhoid fever which is a disease characterized by high mortality and morbidity worldwide. This study was carried out to screen oxacillin resistantSalmonella species isolated from palms of some primary school pupils and food vendors within Kaduna South LGA, Nigeria. Three hundred (300) swab samples were collected from pupils and food vendors of the three selected primary schools as the sampling location. Salmonella enterica was isolated and identified using standard bacteriological methods. Isolates were susceptible to ciprofloxacin 28 (70.0%), Augmentin® 25 (65.0%) amoxicillin 25 (62.5%) and vancomycin 22 (55.0%) but showed resistance to oxacillin 9 (22.5%), ampicillin 12 (30.0%), chloramphenicol 15 (37.5%) and tetracycline 16 (40.0%). Antibiotics that exhibited intermediate susceptibility were methicillin 8 (20.0%) and gentamicin 11 (27.5%). Ciprofloxacin was the most effective antimicrobial agent against Salmonella enterica. The presence of oxacillin-resistant Salmonella enterica was detected via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis. The study recommends that regular monitoring of antibiotic susceptibility pattern and good hygiene practices such as hand washing with soap and water and the use of alcoholic based hand sanitizers should be encouraged.

ABSTRACT

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare manifestation of primary mucinous neoplasms. We report two rare cases of PMP originating from mucinous primary ovarian neoplasms. The case series discusses the cases of female patients aged 86 and 52 years who presented with worsening dyspepsia, abdominal distension, pelvic pain, and altered bowel habits. Both of the patients underwent evaluation comprising cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) levels, ultrasound (US) examination of the abdomen and the pelvis, tumor markers, cytological evaluation, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the pelvis and abdomen. Patients were diagnosed to have pseudomyxoma peritonei arising from mucinous ovarian tumors. Patients were referred to the surgical department and were successfully managed with repeated removal of mucinous material. The present case report highlights the significant radio-pathologic characteristics of PMP, which originated from mucinous ovarian tumors.

ABSTRACT

Occurrence of the second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) is a frequent finding. Literary reports have shown it to be found more in the cases of the maxillary first molar. However the maxillary second molars have also been found with this variation in a number of canals. This paper presents a case report on the occurrence of a second mesiobuccal canal or the MB2 in the maxillary second molar.
