ABSTRACT

The Solar EUV Monitor (SEM) onboard SOHO has measured absolute extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray solar irradiance nearly continuously since January 1996. The EUV Variability Experiment (EVE) on SDO, in operation since April of 2010, measures solar irradiance in a wide spectral range that encompasses the band passes (26 - 34 nm and 0.1 - 50 nm) measured by SOHO/SEM. However, throughout the mission overlap, irradiance values from these two instruments have differed by more than the combined stated uncertainties of the measurements. In an effort to identify the sources of these differences and eliminate them, we investigate in this work the effect of reprocessing the SEM data using a more accurate SEM response function (obtained from synchrotron measurements with a SEM sounding-rocket clone instrument taken after SOHO was already in orbit) and time-dependent, measured solar spectral distributions - i.e., solar reference spectra that were unavailable prior to the launch of the SDO. We find that recalculating the SEM data with these improved parameters reduces mean differences with the EVE measurements from about 20 % to less than 5 % in the 26 - 34 nm band, and from about 35 % to about 15 % for irradiances in the 0.1 - 7 nm band extracted from the SEM 0.1 - 50 nm channel.

ABSTRACT

Fluorescence excitation spectra produced through photoexcitation of N(2) using synchrotron radiation in the spectral region between 50 and 62.5 nm have been obtained with a resolution of 0.004 nm. A broadband detector (in the 115-180 nm region) was employed to monitor fluorescence originated from neutral excited atomic nitrogen fragments which are produced through direct dissociation processes and predissociation from the well-known many-electron excited Rydberg states. We have identified a new Rydberg series (2 (2)Π(g)) 4sσ, a better resolved Rydberg (D (2)Π(g)) npσ series, and also the prominent Codling series converging to the D (2)Π(g), and C (2)Σ(u)(+) states of N(2)(+), respectively. By normalizing our relative fluorescence intensities to previously measured absolute fluorescence cross-section data we obtain the cross-section data of undispersed fluorescence in the 115-180 nm region. The fluorescence quantum yields for the present photodissociative excitation processes are found to be less than 0.05. The present results may provide important data for our understanding of competitions among the various decay channels of the many-electron transition states of N(2).

ABSTRACT

Fluorescence excitation spectra produced through photoexcitation of N(2) using synchrotron radiation in the spectral region between 80 and 100 nm have been studied. Two broadband detectors were employed to simultaneously monitor fluorescence in the 115-320 nm and 300-700 nm regions, respectively. The peaks in the vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence excitation spectra are found to correspond to excitation of absorption transitions from the ground electronic state to the b (1)Pi(u), b(') (1)Sigma(u) (+), c(n) (1)Pi(u) (with n=4-8), c(n) (') (1)Sigma(u) (+) (with n=5-9), and c(4) (')(v('))(1)Sigma(u) (+) (with v(')=0-8) states of N(2). The relative fluorescence production cross sections for the observed peaks are determined. No fluorescence has been produced through excitation of the most dominating absorption features of the b-X transition except for the (1,0), (5,0), (6,0), and (7,0) bands, in excellent agreement with recent lifetime measurements and theoretical calculations. Fluorescence peaks, which correlate with the long vibrational progressions of the c(4) (') (1)Sigma(u) (+) (with v(')=0-8) and the b(') (1)Sigma(u) (+) (with v(') up to 19), have been observed. The present results provide important information for further unraveling of complicated and intriguing interactions among the excited electronic states of N(2). Furthermore, solar photon excitation of N(2) leading to the production of c(4) (')(0) may provide useful data required for evaluating and analyzing dayglow models relevant to the interpretation of c(4) (')(0) in the atmospheres of Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Titan, and Triton.

ABSTRACT

The responsivity of an extreme-ultraviolet transmission grating spectrometer with silicon photodiode detectors was measured with synchrotron radiation. The spectrometer was designed to record the absolute radiation flux in a wavelength bandpass centered at 30 nm. The transmission grating had a period of 200 nm and relatively high efficiencies in the +1 and the -1 diffraction orders that were dispersed on either side of the zero-order beam. Three photodiodes were positioned to measure the signals in the zero order and in the +1 and -1 orders. The photodiodes had aluminum overcoatings that passed the desired wavelength bandpass centered at 30 nm and attenuated higher-order radiation and wavelengths longer than approximately 80 nm. The spectrometer's responsivity, the ratio of the photodiode current to the incident radiation power, was determined as a function of the incident wavelength and the angle of the spectrometer with respect to the incident radiation beam. The spectrometer's responsivity was consistent with the product of the photodiode responsivity and the grating efficiency, both of which were separately measured while removed from the spectrometer.

ABSTRACT

Several interesting cloud and atmospheric features of the Saturn system have been observed by the long-wavelength channel of the two-channel ultraviolet photometer aboard the Pioneer Saturn spacecraft. Reported are observations of the most obvious features, including a Titan-associated cloud, a ring cloud, and the variation of atmospheric emission across Saturn's disk. The long-wavelength data for Titan suggest that a cloud of atomic hydrogen extends at least 5 Saturn radii along its orbit and about 1.5 Saturn radii vertically. A ring cloud, thought to be atomic hydrogen, has also been observed by the long-wavelength channel of the photometer; it shows significant enhancement in the vicinity of the B ring. Finally, spatially resolved observations of Saturn's disk show significant latitudinal variation. Possible explanations of the variation include aurora or limb brightening.

ABSTRACT

A two-channel ultraviolet photometer aboard Pioneer 10 has made several observations of the ultraviolet glow in the wavelength range from 170 to 1400 angstroms in the vicinity of Jupiter. Preliminary results indicate a Jovian hydrogen (1216 angstrom) glow with a brightness of about 1000 rayleighs and a helium (584 angstrom) glow with a brightness of about 10 to 20 rayleighs. In addition, Jupiter appears to have an extensive hydrogen torus surrounding it in the orbital plane of Io. The mean diameter of the torus is about equal to the diameter of the orbit of Io. Several observations of the Galilean satellites have also occurred but only a rather striking Io observation has been analyzed to date. If the observed Io glow is predominantly that of Lyman-alpha, the surface brightness is about 10,000 rayleighs.
