ABSTRACT

Factitious wounds are often overlooked when patients are treated. The experiences we have had with ten patients (nine women and one man) are discussed. A typical case report of a 19 year old female, who had been hospitalized 19 times, demonstrates the magnitude of the diagnostic and therapeutic problems involved in such cases. If the basic psychological disorder cannot be eliminated, medical treatment will remain unsuccessful.

ABSTRACT

Grading and staging of ulcerations are defined using objective criteria. This allows for the initiation of specific therapies at various times. In addition, essential preoperative examinations are mentioned. The operative techniques, principles, and post-operative care are discussed. In a period of four years time the authors operated on 39 cases with presacral pressure sores. Complications are presented and discussed. Finally, in addition to the precautions required to prevent pressure sores, measures to limit their recurrence are mentioned.

ABSTRACT

Solcoderm is a new medication which has been used for the treatment of port-wine stains. It has so far produced very promising results in the treatment of benign, pre-cancerous and malignant skin lesions. The disadvantages of alternative treatment for the port-wine stain are listed.

ABSTRACT

From the 24 683 autopsies performed at the Institute of Pathology of Zurich University from 1963 to 1973, all cases with hypernephroid carcinoma or carcinoma of the urinary tract were listed. For each type of carcinoma the extent of phenacetin abuse, the sex and the mean age of the patients were established. The positive relationship between phenacetin abuse and carcinoma of the renal pelvis and the urinary bladder confirms the results of other investigators. In addition, a relationship between phenacetin abuse and hypernephroid carcinoma is discussed.
