ABSTRACT

Traumatic rupture of the flexor tendons at the musculotendinous junction is rare. A case of flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture at the musculotendinous junction is described. The mechanism of the tendon injury appears to be longitudinal traction on the contracted muscle during delivery of a bowling ball.

ABSTRACT

Attrition ruptures of the flexor tendons in the carpal tunnel are uncommon. A case of rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon to the little finger secondary to osteoarthritis of the pisotriquetral joint is reported. Mechanical attrition against the radial side of the pisiform was thought to be responsible for the rupture.

ABSTRACT

Miniplates were used in the treatment of 66 patients with facial bone fractures. Follow-up (mean, 12 months) disclosed that complications occurred only in cases of mandibular fracture: there were five instances of wound dehiscence, two of infection, and two of occlusal disharmony. Loading tests on the mandibles of dogs which had undergone segmental resection showed that a dynamic compression plate gives rigid fixation, although this appeared to be due to the rigidity of the thick plate itself, rather than the compressive force. When mandibular continuity was restored with a graft, the miniplates provided considerable rigidity.

ABSTRACT

A case of a 58-year-old man with erythroplakia, which occurred in the palate, tongue and gingiva, is reported. The histological diagnosis of a biopsy specimen was carcinoma in situ. The patient was treated with irradiation (60Co, 5060 cGy) and chemotherapy (5-FU, arterial infusion, 6400 mg). The erythema completely disappeared following a 6-week therapy, and no atypical cells were histologically recognized. There were no signs suggesting recurrence or metastasis during the follow-up period of 5 months.

ABSTRACT

Chlorella ellipsoidea Gerneck (IAM C-27) was synchronously grown, and cells at an intermediate stage in the ripening phase of the cell cycle were hardened at 3 degrees C for 48 hours. A nonpolar lipid which increased greatly during hardening was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. Palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids were the main components of the lipid. Electron micrographs revealed the appearance of lipid bodies in hardened cells. When formation of free fatty acids and lipid bodies was inhibited with cycloheximide, oligomycin, and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, the development of a high level of hardiness was always inhibited. However, the converse results were not always realized. Cells hardened in the dark in the absence of glucose developed a measurable hardiness in spite of their failure to form free fatty acids. The appearance of lipid bodies was invariably accompanied by the formation of the fatty acids. In pulse-labeling with [(14)C]NaHCO(3) for 4 minutes at zero time and at the 12th hour of hardening, initial incorporation rates of (14)C into total lipids of whole cells and the cellular membrane fraction were significantly higher than that into free fatty acids. These results suggest that, although fatty acids are inserted into membrane lipids during hardening, the accumulation of free fatty acids and the appearance of lipid bodies per se are not involved in the development of frost hardiness.

ABSTRACT

Despite many reports on the association between ankylosing spondylitis and HLA-B27, most studies have failed to find a significant relationship between HLA-A or B antigen and rheumatoid arthritis. Stastny, however, showed a significantly high frequency of HLA-Dw4 in rheumatoid arthritis in 1976. The study of HLA antigens in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis are thought to be significant in view of the pathogenesis of disease. Eighty-eight Japanese patients with "definite" or " classical" rheumatoid arthritis according to the ARA criteria and 104 normal individuals were typed for serologically detectable HLA-A, B, C, and D antigens. Though small discrepancies were observed in several of the HLA-A, B, and C, antigens, they were not definitely significant. The frequency of HLA-DR4 increased to 70.5% in patients compared to 46.1% in the control (i.e. normal) group (p less than 0.001). However, the frequency increased to 80.6% in male patients (p less than 0.0005). Of interest was the significantly high frequency of HLA-DR4 in males, compared to the low frequency of HLA-DR2 (p less than 0.02). Rheumatoid patients were subdivided into different groups according to the year of onset, the presence of the the rheumatoid factor or rheumatoid nodules, the functional grade and treatment. There were no significant differences in the frequency of HLA-DR4 among subgroups. The results indicate that rheumatoid arthritis, especially in males, is associated with genes of the HLA-D region and that immunogenetic factors linked to HLA have an important role in its pathogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Chlorella ellipsoidea Gerneck (IAM C-27) was synchronously grown and cells at an intermediate stage in the ripening phase of the cell cycle were hardened at 3 C for 48 hours. At various times of hardening, the cells were pulse-labeled for 4 minutes with [(14)C]NaHCO(3) in the light or with [(14)C]glucose in the dark, and the incorporation rate of (14)C into total lipids was determined. A high incorporation rate of [(14)C]NaHCO(3) at zero time of hardening decreased after 6 hours. In the next 15 hours, a distinct increase was noted. This increase occurred prior to the development of frost hardiness. Cycloheximide completely inhibited both the increase and the development, and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea remarkably lowered the high incorporation rate at zero time. The incorporation rate of [(14)C]glucose increased along with hardiness in the dark. These results suggest that the major site of lipid synthesis shifts from chloroplasts to a cytoplasmic system during hardening of Chlorella.

ABSTRACT

We present 22 cases with inter-sterno-costoclavicular ossification. Clinical and pathological findings show that abnormal ossification observed in this situation is due to non-suppurative chronic inflammation of the soft tissues around the sterno-costo-clavicular region such as the costo-clavicular ligament. We have classified X-ray findings into three stages according to the extent of the ossification; localized, generalized, and hyperostotic, and show that the disease progressed in this sequence. A considerable number of the patients showed abnormal X-ray findings in the spine or the sacro-iliac joint. Frequent association of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris was noted in this disease. Most of the cases were treated effectively with anti-inflammatory drugs, but a few cases required surgical resection of the ossified mass with the clavicle or the first rib in order to relieve the severe pain.

ABSTRACT

The clinical and radiological features of 70 patients with ankylosing spinal hyperostosis are presented. Pain in some region of the back was found in 49 patients. No significant deviations were found in HLA typing. Radiologically, the most characteristic features were bony spurs or bridges in the dorsal spine, where they predominated on the right and anterior aspects of the spine, especially in the lower dorsal region. Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament was found in 21 patients.
