ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients with infective endocarditis (IE) who have preoperative cerebral complications remains less understood. Therefore, this study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients with acute IE based on preoperative intracranial findings. METHODS: Of 32 patients with acute IE treated at our hospital between August 2015 and March 2022, 31 patients of whom preoperative intracranial imaging evaluation was available were included in our analysis and compared with those with and without intracranial findings. We controlled the mean arterial blood pressure and activated clotting time (ACT) to prevent abnormally high perfusion pressures and ACTs during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The preoperative background, and postoperative courses focusing on postoperative brain complications were reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 31 patients, 20 (65%) had preoperative imaging findings. The group with intracranial findings was significantly older, with more embolisms in other organs, positive intraoperative pathology findings, and longer CPB times. A new cerebral hemorrhage developed postoperatively in one patient without intracranial findings. There were no early deaths; two patients had recurrent infections in each group, and one died because of sepsis in the late phase in the group with intracranial findings. CONCLUSIONS: Positive intracranial findings indicated significantly active infectious conditions preoperatively but did not affect the postoperative course. Patients without preoperative cerebral complications can develop serious cerebral hemorrhage. Although meticulous examination of preoperative cerebral complications in all patients with IE is essential, a strategy should be adopted to prevent cerebral hemorrhage, even in patients without intracranial findings.

ABSTRACT

To apply CuInSe2 (CIS)-based printable solar batteries; an aqueous phase synthesis method of Cu-In (CI) alloy nanoparticles is studied. Metal complexes in the original solution are restricted to homogenized species by utilizing calculations. For example; [(Cu2+)(ASP2-)2] [ASP: the "body (C4H5O4N)" of aspartic acid (C4H7O4N)] is predominant in the pH 6-13 region (CASP/CCu > 6); while In complexes can be restricted to [(In3+)(OH-)(EDTA4-)] (pH 10-12; CEDTA/CIn = 2) and/or [(In3+)(ASP2-)2] (pH 7-9; CASP/CIn = 5). These results indicate that the added amount of complex reagents should be determined by calculations and not the stoichiometric ratio. The reduction potential of homogenized metal complex is measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements and evaluated by Nernst's equation using the overall stability constants. CuIn alloy nanoparticles with a small amount of byproduct (In nanoparticles) are successfully synthesized. The CI precursor films are spin-coated onto the substrate using a 2-propanol dispersion. Then the films are converted into CIS solar cells; which show a maximum conversion efficiency of 2.30%. The relationship between the open circuit potential; short circuit current density; and fill factor indicate that smoothing of the CIS films and improving the crystallinity and thickness increase the solar cell conversion efficiency.

ABSTRACT

In Japan Pseudopythina tsurumaru is an up to 10.8 mm-long commensal of the burrowing sea cucumber Protankyra bidentata, whereas in Hong Kong the same species is smaller and associated with the crab Hexapus anfractus, itself a commensal of P. bidentata. Japanese P. tsurumaru is a hermaphrodite tending towards protogyny maturing to a female when > or = 7 mm, and entering the hermaphroditic condition when > or = 9 mm long. In addition to normal euspermatozoa, the species produces 30-32 microm long and 7 x 8 microm broad spindle-shaped paraspermatozoa provided with a conical acrosome, a nucleus, and a bundle of approximately 15-16 flagella issuing from the head region. Paired pouch-formed seminal receptacles normally occur in bivalves > or = 6 mm. Bulk sperm transfer presumably takes place by way of spermatozeugmata formed by the two types of sperm cells. Exogenous euspermatozoa attach to particular nonepithelial cells that occupy the interior of the receptacles. These cells, together with their associated sperm, are probably released as syncytial sperm-carrying bodies into the suprabranchial chamber, where the ova are fertilized.
