ABSTRACT

Epidermal basal layer cell vacuolar dystrophy of varying severity was detected in 16 patients with different dermatoses (lichen ruber planus, lupus erythematosus, drug-induced exanthemas, etc.). These changes underlie the lichenoid tissue reactions.

ABSTRACT

The authors analyze the findings of histologic and electron-microscopic examinations of skin biopsy specimens from 15 patients with xerotic balanoposthitis. The results evidence that xerotic balanoposthitis morphologically is characterized by atrophy of the epidermis, vacuolar dystrophy of the basal cells, changed structure of keratohyalin granules, presence of a vast edematous area under the epidermis, absence of elastic fibers, inflammatory cellular infiltrate under the edematous area. During initial manifestations of the disease and its progressive stage more manifest changes are detectable in the derma. Atrophy of the epidermis was not observed, a lesser edematous area was seen under the epidermis, and, in contrast to the typical pattern of sclerotic and atrophic lichen, a dense, more superficially located cellular infiltrate in the derma. Small-granular substance is detectable in the edematous area under the epidermis, as are numbers of microfibrils and this diffusely located collagen fibrils that indicate synthesis of fibrillar substances.

ABSTRACT

On the basis of clinico-morphological analysis of 104 patients with malignant skin lymphomas (MSL) they are subdivided into two groups: epidermotropic (mycosis fungoides, prolymphocytic and lymphoblastic MSL with sinuous nuclei, histiocytic MSL) and non-epidermotropic (prolymphocytic MSL with roundish nuclei, microlymphoblastic and immunoblastic MSL). The former group differs from the latter by the involvement of the epidermis, with hyperplasia of keratinocytes and the disturbance of their differentiation, penetration of tumour cell into the epidermis and by the composition, type and localization of the proliferate. Epidermotropic MSL were much more frequent, affected younger persons, had a longer duration, more widespread skin involvement with polymorphic eruptions. Non-epidermotropic MSL were characterised by the appearance of single tumours of the skin and early generalization.

ABSTRACT

Presents a detailed clinical description of two forms of xerotic obliterating balanoposthitis. Suggests a working classification of the condition, analyzes morphologic findings, proposes a new approach to therapy: laser photochemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

The results of therapy of 43 patients with lichen ruber pilaris are analyzed. Different treatment modalities were employed: PUVA therapy, Re-PUVA therapy, retinoids, PUVA therapy with methotrexate, etc. Re-PUVA therapy was found the most effective method of treatment. Retinoid therapy ranks second in efficacy, PUVA therapy third, etc.

ABSTRACT

A 50-year-old female patient with typical symptoms of acne necrotica is described. The eruptions involved seborrheic areas on the skin of the forehead, conchae of the auricles, nose and nasolabial folds, and presented as nodules covered with serous crusts, necrotic foci, and small stamp cicatrices. Histologic findings confirm the clinical diagnosis. Combined treatment with presocyl and tetracycline was fairly effective.

ABSTRACT

This is the first case of chronic lichenoid keratosis described in this country. The clinical picture and histologic findings suggest that this dermatosis be regarded as an atypical variety of lichen ruber planus.

ABSTRACT

Analyzing the morphologic changes in 106 biopsy specimens from patients with malignant lymphomas of the skin (MLS), the authors paid special attention to abnormalities in the epidermis and to specific features of the infiltrate. Correlations between MLS morphologic types and clinical symptoms were followed. Despite a variety of clinical symptoms of MLS, specific features of each morphologic form and group (of epidermotropic and nonepidermotropic lymphomas) were detected. Since MLS diagnosis should be based on the clinical and morphologic data, the knowledge of the clinical picture corresponding to every morphologic variety of MLS will help the dermatologist predict the disease course and define the examination and treatment strategy for this patient population.

ABSTRACT

The authors review the literature data on and describe 6 cases of nodular mastocytosis presenting as multiple blending nodes. The patients (2 girls and 4 boys aged under 4) have developed a disseminated process with multiple nodes up to 3.0-3.5 cm in diameter colored brownish or yellowish, mostly with a smooth surface, localized on the hairy part of the head, trunk, and limbs. Some nodes blended to form larger foci of lesions, particularly on the back and in large skin folds. In 5 patients the diagnosis has been confirmed histologically. No visceral or systemic abnormalities have been revealed. Enlarged (pea-size) inguinal and cubital lymph nodes have been detected in one child. Zaditen therapy has been fairly effective.

ABSTRACT

A 44-year-old patient suffering from porokeratosis of Mibelli for 27 years is described. The eruptions have involved the skin of the buttocks and the upper and lower limb flexor surface. The clinical picture of the disease may be regarded as the classical plaque form. The clinical diagnosis has been confirmed by a characteristic histologic picture with invagination of the corium mass into the epidermis (corniculate plates). Electron microscopy has shown a number of shifts in the epidermis sites adjacent to the corniculate plate and above it. The proliferative activity of the epidermis was enhanced but the keratinization processes round the corniculate plate was unchanged.
