ABSTRACT

A 9-year-old boy with metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) was found to have diffuse papillomatosis of the gallbladder that was virtually obliterating the lumen of the gallbladder. To our knowledge, two other examples of this lesion have been reported previously in MLD.

ABSTRACT

Two patients with Wegener's granulomatosis, crescentic glomerulonephritis, and severe renal failure are described. Both patients required hemodialysis for control of uremic symptoms. Cyclophosphamide-prednisone therapy successfully controlled the extra-renal manifestations of their disease and reversed the renal failure so that dialysis could be discontinued.

ABSTRACT

This paper's purpose is to document a case of unilateral tonsillar malakoplakia. Escherichia coli was repeatedly cultured from the lesion, and the isolate was studied by expert microbiologists who found no abnormalities in its biologic properties. The course of the lesion was followed by repeated punch biopsies before, and after the institution of antibiotic therapy. Following treatment, healing was characterized histologically by the disappearance of edema, granulocytes and bacilli, a striking initial increase in the number of Michaelis-Gutmann (MG) bodies and other calcified particles, and an increase in the number of foamy plasma cells, before the eventual resolution of the lesion.

ABSTRACT

A 26-year-old white man underwent amputation of the right lower extremity for a chondrosarcoma of the distal femur. Eleven years later, after a long symptom-free interval, he was hospitalized for rapidly progressive dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, and hemoptysis resulting from a large pulmonary metastasis that had extended directly to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein. Within 24 hours of hospitalization, obstruction of the left commom iliac artery by tumor embolus necessitated embolectomy. This represents the second report of a metastatic chondrosarcoma involving the left atrium. The case presented clinically as an atrial myxoma and disseminated via the systemic circulation with a rapidly downhill course therafter.

ABSTRACT

A 53-year-old woman had a large, deforming mass involving the mandible and was treated by subtotal mandibulectomy. Histologically, the mass proved to be an acanthomatous ameloblastoma that contained mucus glands. Eleven years after the mandibulectomy, the tumor has not recurred or metastasized.

ABSTRACT

A case of low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising within a Warthin's tumor is reported. The carcinoma appeared to have originated from the hyperplastic atypical epithelium of the Warthin's tumor. It did not infiltrate the capsule of the lymph node in which the Warthin's tumor developed. After 6 years of follow-up, there is no evidence of recurrence or metastasis. The literature on malignant Warthin's tumor is reviewed.
