ABSTRACT

Hip problems have increased especially among young ice hockey goalkeepers and those using the butterfly technique. Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a common cause of the symptoms. Although hip impingement may also be symptomless, it may later predispose to joint damages, especially in case of goalkeepers who are loading their hip. Diagnosis of the impingement is important in order to lessen any harmful effects. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most important investigation in addition to the elucidation of patient history and clinical condition. Conservative treatment includes changing the exercise, and making use of exercises supporting the hip. If secondary joint damages have already developed, surgical treatment is required.

ABSTRACT

Risks of injury in cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding are largely due to the characteristics, speed, equipment and level of difficulty of the sport. The preventative means are also found among these factors. Regardless of the injuries associated with these winter sports, skiing is considered as a safe form of physical exercise. Furthermore, the risk of injury in downhill skiing and snowboarding is acceptable provided that risk-taking is in accord with the skill level. The helmet is an easy and inexpensive means in reducing severe injuries (head injuries) occurring in downhill skiing and snowboarding. Helmet use should thus be encouraged.

ABSTRACT

Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee should be suspected, when the knee twists with a snap or giving-out. Magnetic resonance imaging is worthwhile especially in connection with a fresh hemarthrosis, since any associated injuries may influence treatment methods and schedules. Clinical decisions for athletes are furthermore dependent on the sport and sometimes also on the training phase. It pays to centralize the treatment to experienced units, in which the outcome of surgical operations is exceedingly good. Training programs have been developed for the prevention of anterior cruciate ligament injuries of the knee, especially for those pursuing sports causing a heavy load to the knee.

ABSTRACT

In order to be empowered in different situations related to dialysis care, patients need knowledge. This study describes the knowledge expectations of patients on dialysis treatment (n = 47) and selected background variables. The results indicated that patients expressed moderate knowledge expectations. Most important were the biophysiological, functional, and ethical dimensions of knowledge. The least important were the social and experiential dimensions of knowledge. Patients' age, employment status, dialysis modality, and length of dialysis were positively correlated with knowledge expectations.
