ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of the present research was to assess the mesiodistal angulation of the maxillary anterior teeth utilizing Image J computer software, a Profile projector, and a Custom-made jig. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 34 subjects (17 males and 17 females) were chosen from a group of 18-30 years old with bilateral Angle Class I molars and canine relationships. One manual approach (Custom-made jig) and two digital methods (J computer software, a Profile projector) were used to record the mesiodistal angulation in incisal view. The individuals had alginate impressions made, and a facebow was used to capture the maxilla's spatial relationship with the cranium. The articulated cast with the help of mounting ring moved to the specially customized jig, then the angulations was measured in the incisal view after the casts were placed in a semi-adjustable articulator. Data were recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The mesiodistal angulation in the incisal view via three methods between the 17 males and 17 females has statistically significant different. Although the mesiodistal angulation for maxillary lateral incisor and canine did not show any statistically significant difference, the maximum and minimum values obtained were always greater in males in comparison with the females. This indicates that the positions of six maxillary anterior teeth in the males resulted in the creation of upward sweep of incisal edges of central and lateral incisors which was also referred to as "smiling line" producing masculine surface anatomy more squared and vigorous while feminine surface anatomy being more rounded, soft, and pleasant. There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left sides, indicating bilateral arch symmetry and the symmetrical place of the right teeth compared with the left side's corresponding teeth. CONCLUSION: On conclusion, according to the current study's findings, all three approaches can measure the mesiodistal angulations of maxillary anterior teeth in incisal view with clinically acceptable accuracy. The digital methods, which included using the Image J computer software and the profile projector, achieved more accurate results than the manual method. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The outcomes of this study's mesiodistal angulations can be used as a reference for placing teeth in both fully and partially edentulous conditions. This study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of achieving the ideal occlusion in the Indian population by placing the maxillary anterior teeth at the proper mesiodistal angulation. ABSTRACT

Chronic non-suppurative osteomyelitis, also known as Garre's osteomyelitis is a well-described pathologic entity in dental literature. We present here a case report of a unilateral hard bony swelling of the lower jaw associated with infection. Radiograph revealed the pathognomic feature of 'onion skin' appearance. Surgical recontouring of the lower jaw was performed since there was no evidence of bone remodelling after removal of the infected tooth.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Oral health as an integral part of general health. Rural population neglect oral health as they lack awareness on oral diseases and also due to inadequate availability of dental services. There is a very high prevalence of chronic inflammatory periodontal disease in the rural Indian population, which is left untreated. Hence, this cross-sectional survey was taken up in the rural area of Mangalore taluk, Karnataka, India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 1312 participants aged 18 years and older. The prevalence of periodontal disease among the dental prosthetic and nonprosthetic wearers was assessed. The World Health Organization format was used to record the periodontal status and loss of attachment. Data collected were analyzed using chi-square test. P < 0.05 was considered as significant. RESULT: Of the 1312 included subjects, 520 were males (39.6%) and 792 were females (60.3%). Periodontal status showed that calculus was found to be high among all age groups. When the prevalence of periodontal disease was assessed among the prosthetic wearers, it was found that subjects wearing removable partial denture showed increased prevalence of periodontal pocket depth and attachment loss irrespective of age group, gender, and educational qualification. CONCLUSION: Lack of awareness among the individuals regarding periodontal diseases has been associated with consistently higher prevalence of periodontal diseases and treatment needs. Demographical studies need to be carried out at regular intervals, thus helping in planning the treatment needs nationwide for better oral health care in rural population.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The present study was aimed to assess the transferability of occlusal plane (OP) orientation from the patient to the articulators with the help of two different facebow systems and evaluated with a gold standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty dentate patients were selected for the study. Two semi-adjustable arcon articulators that are Hanau Wide(®) Vue using SpringBow and Whip Mix(®) using quick-mount facebow were used in the study. Mean angle between OP to horizontal reference plane obtained from Hanau Wide Vue articulator system (SpringBow using Orbitale as anterior reference point) and Whip Mix articulator system (quickmount facebow using nasion as anterior reference point) was tabulated. These values obtained were further compared with each other and evaluated against cephalometric evidence, which was considered as the gold standard for the study. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, Scheffe post hoc analysis for group comparison, and level of significance (P) was calculated using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 16 (IBM, New York, USA) software program. RESULTS: Intragroup comparison of mean angle OP values showed highly significant difference (p = 0.000). Comparison between Hanau Wide Vue articulator system and Whip Mix articulator system showed statistically highly significant with a mean difference of 10.51° with Hanau system values being lower than Whip Mix system. Difference between Hanau system and cephalometric values were statistically significant with a mean difference of 2.835° and Hanau system consistently recording lower values than cephalometric values. Difference between Whip Mix system and cephalometric values was also statistically significant with a mean difference of 7.680° with group 2 values were on average 7.680° higher than group 3. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, the Hanau system and Whip Mix system showed significant difference in reproduction of angle between OP and horizontal reference plane. Hanau articulator system showed closer values to that of cephalometric values in comparison with Whip Mix articulator system. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Orientation of the maxillary cast in an articulator is a crucial part of several techniques used in dentistry. Orientation of maxillary cast in the articulator acts as a baseline from which further steps for occlusal rehabilitation of the patients are carried out. Recording and transferring of the occlusal cant to articulators require facebow.
