ABSTRACT

Herein, a low-cost and readily available sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) was used as a solid base catalyst for the depolymerization of polycarbonate (PC) via methanolysis in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a solvent. NaAlO2 was highly active for the reaction, and the performance was comparable to that of soluble strong base SrO and much higher than those of MgO and CaO. By the reaction over the catalyst, a highly pure and crystalline bisphenol A (BPA) was obtained. Among tested organic solvents, THF was the best in aiding PC methanolysis over NaAlO2 due to the polarity similar to PC according to Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs). At 60 °C, 98.1% PC conversion and 96.8% BPA yield were achieved within just 2 h. NaAlO2 was reusable without any severe catalyst deactivation in at least four runs. The mechanistic study revealed that the reaction proceeded via the methoxide pathway, with THF aiding the dissolution of PC. The reaction over NaAlO2 possessed a low apparent activation energy (Ea) of 75.1 kJ mol-1, which is the lowest ever reported so far for the reaction over solid catalysts.

ABSTRACT

The trapping of paraffins is beneficial compared to selective olefin adsorption for adsorptive olefin purification from a process engineering point of view. Here we demonstrate the use of a series of Zn2(X-bdc)2(dabco) (where X-bdc2- is bdc2- = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate with substituting groups X, DM-bdc2- = 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate or TM-bdc2- = 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and dabco = diazabicyclo[2.2.2.]octane) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of ethane from ethylene streams. The best performing material from this series is Zn2(TM-bdc)2(dabco) (DMOF-TM), which shows a high ethane uptake of 5.31 mmol g-1 at 110 kPa, with a good IAST selectivity of 1.88 towards ethane over ethylene. Through breakthrough measurements a high productivity of 13.1 L kg-1 per breakthrough is revealed with good reproducibility over five consecutive cycles. Molecular simulations show that the methyl groups of DMOF-TM are forming a van der Waals trap with the methylene groups from dabco, snuggly fitting the ethane. Further, rarely used high pressure coadsorption measurements, in pressure regimes that most scientific studies on hydrocarbon separation on MOFs ignore, reveal an increase in ethane capacity and selectivity for binary mixtures with increased pressures. The coadsorption measurements reveal good selectivity of 1.96 at 1000 kPa, which is verified also through IAST calculations up to 3000 kPa. This study overall showcases the opportunities that pore engineering by alkyl group incorporation and pressure increase offer to improve hydrocarbon separation in reticular materials.

ABSTRACT

A metal-organic framework (MOF) consisting of Cu-benzenetricarboxylic acid was processed under ultrahigh pressure (5 GPa) and at temperature of up to 500 °C. The products were characterized with TEM, FTIR, and XAFS. The decomposition of the MOF started at 200 °C at 5 GPa. This temperature was much lower than that in the vacuum. Single-nanometer Cu nanoparticles were obtained in carbon matrix, which was significantly smaller than the Cu particles prepared at ambient pressure. The catalytic activity for Huisgen cycloaddition was examined, and the sample processed at 5 GPa showed a much improved performance compared with that of the MOF-derived Cu nanoparticles prepared without high pressure.

ABSTRACT

Alongside TiO2, Magneli-phase titanium suboxide having the composition of TinO2n-1 is a kind of attractive functional materials composed of titanium. However, there still remain problems to be overcome in the synthesis of titanium suboxide; the existing synthesis methods require high temperature typically over 1000 °C and/or postsynthesis purification. This study presents a novel approach to synthesis of titanium suboxide nanoparticles through solid-phase reaction of TiO2 with TiH2. Crystal phases of titanium suboxide were easily controlled by changing TiO2/TiH2 molar ratios in a TiO2-TiH2 mixed precursor, and a series of titanium suboxide nanoparticles including Ti2O3, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, and Ti8O15 were successfully obtained. The reaction of TiO2 with TiH2 proceeded at a relatively low temperature due to the high reactivity of TiH2, giving titanium suboxide nanoparticles without any postsynthesis purification. Ti2O3 nanoparticles and TiO2 were applied as solid acid catalysts for reaction of furfural with 2-propanol. Ti2O3 showed a high catalytic activity and high selectivity for acetalization of furfural, while TiO2 showed only poor activity for transfer hydrogenation of furfural. The difference in catalytic properties is discussed in terms of the acid properties of Ti2O3 and TiO2.

ABSTRACT

A two-dimensional (2D) layered Mg(II) coordination polymer (CP) with a high tolerance for H2 O was designed, synthesised, and crystallographically characterised. The synthesis was achieved by the introduction of a flexible 2D layered structure composed of Mg(II) ions and isonicotinate N-oxide ligands. Owing to its high H2 O tolerance, the obtained 2D layered structure has the flexibility to repeatedly adsorb a large amount of H2 O associated with interlayer expansion and enable the removal of H2 O from a H2 O/2-propanol mixed vapour. These results indicate that the CP could be an excellent dehydrating agent.

ABSTRACT

Heteropolyanions and their arrays in microporous cesium salts of 12-tungstosilicic acid, Cs2.5H1.5[SiW12O40] and Cs4.0[SiW12O40], were observed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Microstructures that form micropores in the polyoxometalates were visualized.
