ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to determine the magnitude of characteristics of immunity and estimate the immunological status of the children presenting with chronic adenoiditis (CA) at the stage of remission. The valid sample (n=158) was used to analyse the blood cellular spectrum and humoral characteristics in the children at the age from 2.5 to 10 years residing in the city of Krasnoyarsk. It was shown that the development of CA was associated with the activation of non-specific protective factors and consistent with the general physiological patterns. The total T-lymphocyte population significantly increased which excluded the T-cellular immunodepressive state. The reduction in the absolute and relative number of B-lymphocytes suggested insufficiency of the B cell-dependent component of the immune system in the children that was especially well-pronounced in the younger age group.

ABSTRACT

The results of the study lead to the conclusion that the development of burn disease in children is accompanied by significant lymphocytic structural metabolic changes that determine the functional capabilities of cells and the immune system as a whole. There is an evident activation of the glutathione antioxidant system, a drastic activation of enzymes that ensure Krebs cycle reactions, as well as activation of anaerobic processes. The above changes are mainly caused by the activated sympathoadrenal system that is characteristic of stresses. The knowledge about the metabolic mechanisms responsible for the development of cellular reactions to burn shock and burn disease permits specification of the elements of the pathogenesis of these severe conditions and substantiation of the possibility of using metabolic correction in the complex treatment of children with the above pathology.

ABSTRACT

Expression of total T- and B-population, T-subpopulation lymphocyte receptors and secretion of IgM, IgG and IgA were measured in 112 patients with diffuse purulent peritonitis and 81 healthy donors. Expression of receptors was correlated with the disease severity identified by leukocytic index of intoxication (LII). The latter appeared to accurately reflect the pattern of immunological impairment. Reduced absolute and proportional values of total pools of T-, B-cells and T-helpers, but elevated ones of T-suppressors and T-amplifiers occurred in LII less than 2.0. In LII greater than 7.0 there was total suppression of all the cellular populations due to deep lymphopenia. At the terminal stage of peritonitis paralysis of T-helper receptors and B-cells went in parallel with high secretion of serum immunoglobulins.
