ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the correlation between variations in maximum occlusal force and the maxillofacial skeletal pattern in subjects with malocclusion using a compact device. DESIGN: Three hundred and fifty patients (150 males 200 females) with malocclusion were included. The male and female subjects were divided into five groups each based on chronological age. The maximum occlusal force was measured with a simplified occlusal force meter. The maxillofacial skeletal pattern was analyzed with lateral cephalograms. On the basis of these data, we studied the correlation between the maximum occlusal force and the maxillofacial skeletal pattern in each age group. RESULTS: The maximum occlusal force tended to increase with age, with a tendency to be greater in male than in female subjects. In the male subjects, up to their 20s, the maximum occlusal force continued to increase, while in the female subjects its increase almost terminated in the later teens. In some of the age groups, the maximum occlusal force showed a negative correlation with the mandibular plane angle. CONCLUSIONS: Maximum occlusal force tended to increase with age. There was a gender difference in the maximum occlusal force at all age groups, values being larger in the males. In the males, the maximum occlusal force continued to increase until their 20s, while in the females, this increase almost terminated at the age of 17.

ABSTRACT

To elucidate phytochrome A (phyA) function in rice, we screened a large population of retrotransposon (Tos17) insertional mutants by polymerase chain reaction and isolated three independent phyA mutant lines. Sequencing of the Tos17 insertion sites confirmed that the Tos17s interrupted exons of PHYA genes in these mutant lines. Moreover, the phyA polypeptides were not immunochemically detectable in these phyA mutants. The seedlings of phyA mutants grown in continuous far-red light showed essentially the same phenotype as dark-grown seedlings, indicating the insensitivity of phyA mutants to far-red light. The etiolated seedlings of phyA mutants also were insensitive to a pulse of far-red light or very low fluence red light. In contrast, phyA mutants were morphologically indistinguishable from wild type under continuous red light. Therefore, rice phyA controls photomorphogenesis in two distinct modes of photoperception--far-red light-dependent high irradiance response and very low fluence response--and such function seems to be unique and restricted to the deetiolation process. Interestingly, continuous far-red light induced the expression of CAB and RBCS genes in rice phyA seedlings, suggesting the existence of a photoreceptor(s) other than phyA that can perceive continuous far-red light in the etiolated seedlings.

ABSTRACT

The members of nonphototropic hypocotyl 1 (NPH1) family of genes in plants are considered to be the blue-light photoreceptors for phototropism. We isolated and characterized two NPH1 homologues from rice named as OsNPH1a and OsNPH1b. The predicted proteins of both OsNPH1 genes include LOV (LOV1 and LOV2) and protein kinase domains which are typically conserved regions in all the members of NPH1 family. Comparison of OsNPH1 apoproteins with those from other plant species revealed a close homology of OsNPHla with Arabidopsis, maize and oat NPH1, while the OsNPH1b appeared to be more closer to the recently found Arabidopsis NPL1. These structural homologies indicate that NPH1 homologues can be grouped into two classes namely "NPH1 type" and "NPL1 type". Northern blot analysis showed that OsNPH1a was strongly expressed in coleoptiles, whereas OsNPH1b was highly expressed in leaves of dark-grown rice seedlings. When the dark-grown seedlings were transferred to the continuous white light, the abundance of the OsNPH1a transcript in coleoptiles rapidly declined to the minimum levels, whereas the OsNPH1b transcript level in leaves gradually increased. These results lead us to conclude that expression of OsNPH1a and OsNPH1b is differently photoregulated in different tissues of rice seedlings.

ABSTRACT

We observed induction of additional trichome formation on the adaxial surface of mature leaves of Arabidopsis after massive doses (1-3 kilograys) of gamma-radiation from cobalt-60. A typical increase in trichome number was observed in the seventh leaf when the full expansion of the fifth leaf was irradiated. Under normal growth conditions, trichome numbers on the adaxial surface of seventh leaf of the Arabidopsis ecotypes Columbia (Col) and Landsberg erecta (Ler) were 122.5 +/- 22.7 and 57.5 +/- 14.5, respectively. However, gamma-radiation induced additional trichome formation and the numbers rose to 207.9 +/- 43.7 and 95.0 +/- 27.1 in Col and Ler, respectively. In Col the shape of new trichomes was intact and their formation was spatially maintained at equal distances from other trichomes. In Ler trichome morphology was aberrant and the formation was relatively random. Treatment with antioxidants before gamma-irradiation suppressed the increase in trichome number, and treatment with methyl viologen and light induced small trichomes. These results suggest that gamma-radiation-induced trichome formation is mediated by active oxygen species generated by water radiolysis. gamma-Radiation-induced trichome formation was blocked in the trichome mutants ttg-1, gl1-1, and gl2-1. These results suggest that gamma-radiation-induced trichome formation is mediated by the normal trichome developmental pathway.

ABSTRACT

We have isolated five cDNA clones (osk1-5) for protein kinases from rice which are related to SNF1 protein kinase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Based on the sequence homology, these cDNAs can be classified into two groups, group 1 (osk1) and group 2 (osk2-5). The products of these genes were demonstrated to be functional SNF1-related protein kinases by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Recombinant proteins expressed from both groups of genes were fully active as protein kinases and could phosphorylate SAMS peptide, a substrate specific for the SNF1/AMPK family, as well as themselves (autophosphorylation). Moreover, expression of osk3 cDNA in yeast snf1 mutants restored SNF1 function. Northern blot analyses showed differential expression of these two gene groups; group 1 is expressed uniformly in growing tissues (young roots, young shoots, flowers, and immature seeds), whereas group 2 is strongly expressed in immature seeds. SNF1-related protein kinases have been reported from different plant species, such as rye, barley, Arabidopsis, tobacco, and potato, while the type of gene strongly expressed in immature seeds is known only in cereals such as rye, barley, and, from our findings, in rice. Expression levels of the group 2 genes were further analyzed in seeds during seed maturation. Expression is transiently increased in the early stages of seed maturation and then decreases. The expression peak precedes those of the sbe1 and waxy genes, which are involved in starch synthesis in rice. Taken together, these findings suggest that group 2 OSK genes play important roles in the early stages of endosperm development in rice seeds.

ABSTRACT

A 57-year-old man was admitted with fever and a dry cough in 1985. He had used methylphenidate intravenously for 3 years. A chest X-ray film on admission showed diffuse micronodular shadows and massive lesions in the lower lung fields bilaterally. Pulmonary granulomatosis was diagnosed histologically, but the etiology remained unclear. In 1993, the patient was readmitted because of symptom exacerbation. The micronodular shadows had extended and the bilateral, massive lesions had enlarged. Transbronchial lung biopsy revealed granulomas with crystallized foreign bodies. Electron microscopy confirmed that the foreign bodies consisted of magnesium and silicon, suggesting talc. Talc granulomatosis caused by intravenous administration of methylphenidate was subsequently diagnosed. The symptoms improved with conservative treatment, and no signs of reexacerbation have appeared.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A phase II trial combining cisplatin, carboplatin and etoposide was conducted in previously untreated patients with stage IIIB and IV small-cell lung cancer, in an attempt to increase response rates and prolong survival. METHODS: Previously untreated patients with small-cell lung cancer, with measurable disease, aged < or = 72 years, performance status < or = 2, and adequate hematologic, hepatic and renal function were enrolled in the study. They were treated with 80 mg/m2 cisplatin on day 1, 100 mg/m2 carboplatin on days 2, 3 and 8, and 50 mg/m2 etoposide on days 1, 2, 3 and 8. RESULTS: A total of 46 patients (20 with stage IIIB and 26 with stage IV disease) were enrolled in the study. A total of 186 courses of chemotherapy were given, and the dose was reduced in 27 courses (15%). The chemotherapy was repeated for four or more courses in 30 patients. There were 10 complete responses and 32 partial responses, for a total response rate of 91% (95% confidence interval, 79% to 98%). The median survival time and 2-year survival rates were 18 months and 22% for stage IIIB disease, and 14 months and 15% for stage IV disease. Major side effects were hematologic: leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia of grade 3 or more occurred in 48%, 46%, and 43% of patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The three-drug regimen of cisplatin, carboplatin and etoposide is feasible and active against small-cell lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

We investigated a new separated type of dental appliance (mandibular advancing positioner: MAP) that is mobile and allows free adjustment of mandibular advancement. In 8 adult male patients with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), the mean apnea index (AI) decreased from 31.1 to 4.2, and the mean apnea hypopnea index (AHI) decreased from 44.2 to 11.7. The distance of mandibular advancement using the Flankfort horizontal plane as a standard ranged in the 8 SAS patients from 1.8 to 5.0 mm by lateral cephalograms. A high positive correlation was observed between the distance of mandibular advancement and the rate of improvement in AI (R2 = 0.878), or the rate of AHI (R2 = 0.861), showing a higher improvement rate with more marked mandibular advancement.

ABSTRACT

The effects of calcium phosphate ceramic implants on tooth eruption were investigated radiographically and histologically in 20 3-month-old dogs. Four kinds of ceramic particles were used: dense and porous hydroxyapatite particles, and dense and porous tricalcium phosphate particles. These particles were implanted in the sockets after deciduous tooth extraction. The four types of calcium phosphate ceramic particles produced similar radiographic and histologic findings. There was no delay of tooth eruption, no dysplasia, and no resorption of dental hard tissue.

Although many cases of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WMG) with pulmonary involvement have been reported, endobronchial involvement has not been described. We report an unusual case of WMG wherein endobronchial invasion of tumor cells narrowed the airways and caused coughing and wheezing.

A rare case of a peripheral pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma is presented. Histological examination after lobectomy showed pronounced submucosal invasion of the carcinoma to proximal bronchi.

ABSTRACT

Flomoxef (FMOX, 6315-S) is a new oxacephem with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. We used FMOX for treatment of 13 patients with respiratory tract infections including 4 cases of pneumonia, 5 of lung abscess and 4 of exacerbation of the chronic airway diseases. FMOX showed excellent in vitro antimicrobial activities against clinical isolates including 4 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, 2 strains of Haemophilus influenzae and each one strain of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Clinical responses were excellent in 3 cases, good in 7 and fair or poor in 3. No side effect was observed, but abnormal laboratory findings caused by FMOX administration were found in 2 cases; hypertransaminasemia and eosinophilia. However, neither of them was severe. From the above results, it is considered that FMOX will be useful for treatment of patients with respiratory tract infections.
