ABSTRACT

Rock and sediment samples were collected from petit-spots in the northwestern Pacific. The sampling was conducted using deep-submergence vehicle (DSV) Shinkai 6500 and its mother ship, research vessel (RV) Yokosuka during YK20-14S and YK21-07S cruises. The collected rock samples are basalt and peperite. Some of the basalts include small mantle xenoliths (∼3 cm in diameter). The dataset of rock and sediment samples from the petit-spots located on >130 Ma northwestern Pacific plate are presented herein. The peperites are a reaction product between petit-spot magma and wet sediment, and the mantle xenoliths are fragmented mantle materials transported by the petit-spot magmas. Therefore, the petit-spot samples are of significant importance to elucidate modification process of the surface condition by petit-spot magma and to characterize the deep lithospheric mantle. The dataset presented herein provides in a sense a unique insight into the whole Pacific plate just before its subduction beneath the Japan arc.

ABSTRACT

The comprehensive production of detailed bathymetric maps is important for disaster prevention, resource exploration, safe navigation, marine salvage, and monitoring of marine organisms. However, owing to observation difficulties, the amount of data on the world's seabed topography is scarce. Therefore, it is essential to develop methods that effectively use the limited data. In this study, based on dictionary learning and sparse coding, we modified the super-resolution technique and applied it to seafloor topographical maps. Improving on the conventional method, before dictionary learning, we performed pre-processing to separate the teacher image into a low-frequency component that has a general structure and a high-frequency component that captures the detailed topographical features. We learn the topographical features by training the dictionary. As a result, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) was reduced by 30% compared with bicubic interpolation and accuracy was improved, especially in the rugged part of the terrain. The proposed method, which learns a dictionary to capture topographical features and reconstructs them using a dictionary, produces super-resolution with high interpretability.

ABSTRACT

A 28-year-old man presented with mental retardation, peculiar facial features, radioulnar synostosis, hypogonadism, aplasia of the right kidney, a moderate degree of proteinuria, and peripheral cyanosis. The activated partial thromboplastin time was shortened, and the level of plasma factor VIII was high. A chromosomal analysis revealed a 49, XXXXY karyotype. From the 10th hospital day, he suffered from sudden dyspnea following swelling of the left leg. He was diagnosed as having deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and was successfully treated with anticoagulant therapy. This is the first case of the 49, XXXXY syndrome complicated with unilateral renal aplasia, proteinuria, and venous thromboembolism.

ABSTRACT

A case of adult-to-adult, living-donor liver transplantation using a right liver graft is described. In the donor operation, when the middle hepatic vein (MHV) was clamped after hepatic transection, reversed flow was detected in MHV tributaries by intraoperative color Doppler ultrasonography. Regurgitated flow in the clamped inferior right hepatic vein was also demonstrated. Portal flow remained hepatopetal during the procedure. Based on these ultrasonographic findings, neither the MHV tributaries nor the inferior right hepatic vein was reconstructed.
