ABSTRACT

Conventional polymer/ceramic composite solid-state electrolytes (CPEs) have limitations in inhibiting lithium dendrite growth and fail to meet the contradictory requirements of anodes and cathodes. Herein, an asymmetrical poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT) CPE was prepared. The CPE incorporates high dielectric PZT nanoparticles, which enrich a dense thin layer on the anode side, making their dipole ends strongly electronegative. This attracts lithium ions (Li+) at the PVDF-PZT interface to transport through dipolar channels and promotes the dissociation of lithium salts into free Li+. Consequently, the CPE enables homogeneous lithium plating and suppresses dendrite growth. Meanwhile, the PVDF-enriched region at the cathode side ensures intermediate contact with positive active materials. Therefore, Li/PVDF-PZT CPE/Li symmetrical cells exhibit a stable cycling performance exceeding 1900 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 at 25 °C, outperforming Li/PVDF solid-state electrolyte/Li cells that fail after 120 h. The LiNi0.8Co0.1Mo0.1O2/PVDF-PZT CPE/Li cells show low interfacial impedances and maintain stable cycling performance for 500 cycles with a capacity retention of 86.2% at 0.5 C and 25 °C. This study introduces a strategy utilizing dielectric ceramics to construct dipolar channels, providing a uniform Li+ transport mechanism and inhibiting dendrite growth.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: A series of novel bio-based form stable composite phase-change materials (fs-CPCMs) for solar thermal energy storage and management applications were prepared, using the pomelo peel flour (PPF) as the supporting matrix and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) or isocyanate-terminated PEG to induce a phase change. The microscopic structure, crystalline structures and morphologies, phase change properties, thermal stability, light-to-thermal conversion behavior, and thermal management characteristics of the obtained fs-CPCMs were studied. The results indicate that the obtained fs-CPCM-2 presented remarkable phase-change performance and high thermal stability. The melting latent heat and crystallization heat for fs-CPCM-2 are 143.2 J/g and 141.8 J/g, respectively, and its relative enthalpy efficiency (λ) is 87.4%, which are higher than most reported values in the related literature. The obtained novel bio-based fs-CPCM-2 demonstrated good potential for applications in solar thermal energy storage and waste heat recovery.

ABSTRACT

The electrically conductive poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/carbon black (CB) composites with a fine co-continuous micro structure and selective localization of CB in the HDPE component were fabricated by one-step melt processing via a twin-screw extruder. Micromorphology analysis, electrical conductivity, thermal properties, thermal stability, and mechanical properties were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images indicate that a co-continuous morphology is formed, and CB is selectively distributed in the HDPE component. With the introduction of CB, the phase size of the PLA component and the HDPE component in PLA/HDPE blends is reduced. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermos gravimetric analysis (TGA) results show that the introduction of CB promotes the crystallization behavior of the PLA and HDPE components, respectively, and improves the thermal stability of PLA70/30HDPE/CB composites. The electrically conductive percolation threshold of the PLA70/30HDPE/CB composites is around 5.0 wt %, and the electrical conductivity of PLA70/30HDPE/CB composites reaches 1.0 s/cm and 15 s/cm just at the 10 wt % and 15 wt % CB loading, respectively. Further, the tensile and impact tests show that the PLA70/30HDPE/CB composites have good mechanical properties. The excellent electrical conductivity and good mechanical properties offer the potential to broaden the application of PLA/HDPE/CB composites.
