ABSTRACT

The study examined how neck muscle imbalance and plagiocephaly affect the lying and rolling activities in 118 infants aged 4 to 6 months with postural torticollis. Outcome measures included age, sex, cervical movement, and plagiocephaly severity. Neck muscle function was assessed with the Muscle Function Scale (MFS), and infant motor abilities in lying and rolling were evaluated through the corresponding dimensions of the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM). Multiple regression analysis showed that a better MFS score of the affected neck was significantly associated with improved lying and rolling activities in the GMFM (p < .01), and importantly, the interaction between the plagiocephaly and the MFS scores of the affected neck muscle in these activities was found to be significant (p < .05). These results highlight the need for early intervention in infants with torticollis to address muscle imbalance and plagiocephaly, crucial for early motor development (KCT0008367).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of hot and cold temperature on the renal function of people with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease, using large-scale clinical data. METHODS: We used retrospective cohort data from the Clinical Data Warehouse of the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, which was containing clinical, diagnostic, laboratory, and other information of all patients who have visited the hospital since 1997. We obtained climate data from the Automated Synoptic Observing System of the Korea Meteorological Administration. The heat index was used as a measuring tool to evaluate heat exposure by indexing the actual heat that individuals feel according to temperature and humidity. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. To investigate changes in renal function trends with heat index, this study used generalized additive mixed models. RESULTS: Renal function decreased linearly with the increasing heat index after approximately 25°C, which was considered the flexion point of temperature. A linear decrease in the eGFR was observed with the effects of 0 to 5 lag days. While there was a correlation observed between the decrease in eGFR and temperatures below -10°C, the results do not indicate statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study provide scientific evidence that high temperatures affect the renal function of people with chronic diseases. These results can help prevent heat-related morbidity by identifying those who are more likely to develop renal disease and experience worsening renal function.

ABSTRACT

Leaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.) is explored for its biofumigant properties, derived from its secondary metabolites, particularly allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), produced during the enzymatic breakdown of glucosinolates like sinigrin. The research examines eight leaf mustard cultivars developed in Yeosu city, South Korea, focusing on their genetic characteristics, AITC concentration and nitriles formation rates from glucosinolates. Results indicate that the allelopathic effects, largely dependent on AITC concentration and enzymatic activity, vary across cultivar. Sinigrin and AITC constitute 79% and 36%, respectively, of glucosinolate and its hydrolysis products. The cultivar 'Nuttongii' demonstrates significant potential for inhibiting weeds, exhibiting the highest AITC concentration at 27.47 ± 6.46 µmole g-1 These outcomes highlight the importance of selecting mustard cultivars for biofumigation based on their glucosinolate profiles and hydrolysis product yields. The study also identifies a significant genetic influence on AITC and nitrile formation, suggesting that epithiospecifier protein modulation could enhance both allelopathic and other beneficial effects. Collectively, the research underscores the promise of mustard as a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional herbicides.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The steatosis-associated fibrosis estimator (SAFE) score has been developed to distinguish clinically significant fibrosis in patients with steatotic liver disease (SLD). However, validation of its performance in Asian subjects is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the SAFE score in Asian subjects with biopsy-proven SLD and in different subgroups according to age, sex, and body mass index. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 6383 living liver donors who underwent a liver biopsy between 2005 and 2023. Of these, 1551 subjects with biopsy-proven SLD were included. The performance of the SAFE score was evaluated using areas under the curve and compared with those of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS) and fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4). RESULTS: The prevalence of clinically significant fibrosis in the cohort was 2.2%. The proportion of subjects with a "low-risk" SAFE score was the highest (91.0%), followed by those with "intermediate-risk" (7.8%) and "high-risk" (1.2%) scores. The prevalence of fibrosis in subjects with low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk scores was 1.6%, 6.6%, and 21.1%, respectively. The SAFE outperformed FIB-4 and NFS (area under the curve: 0.70 vs 0.64 for both NFS and FIB-4). However, it showed low diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity (27%) at the low cutoff (SAFE < 0) in subjects aged 30-39 years (fibrosis: 1.2%), despite having a high negative predictive value (0.99). CONCLUSION: While the SAFE score demonstrates superior performance compared with other noninvasive tests in Asian subjects with SLD, its performance varies across age groups. In younger subjects, particularly, its performance may be more limited.

Background: After the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the widespread adoption of working from home, or teleworking, has prompted extensive research regarding its effects on work productivity and the physical and mental health of employees. In this context, our study aimed to investigate the association between working from home and health-related productivity loss (HRPL). Methods: An online survey was conducted with a sample of 1,078 workers. HRPL was estimated by the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire: General Health version. Workers that have been working from home in the last 6 months were categorized into the "work from home" group. Generalized linear models were used to compare the mean difference of HRPL between "work from home" and "commuters" group. Stratified analyses were conducted based on various factors including gender, age, income level, occupation, education level, previous diagnosis of chronic disease, presence of preschool children, living in studio apartment, living alone, commuting time, working hours and regular exercise. Results: The overall HRPL was higher in the "work from home" group than in the "commuters" group with a mean difference of 4.05 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.09-8.01). In the stratified analyses, significant differences were observed in workers with chronic diseases (mean difference: 8.23, 95% CI: 0.38-16.09), who do not live alone (mean difference: 4.84, 95% CI: 0.35-9.33), and workers that do not exercise regularly (mean difference: 4.96, 95% CI: 0.12-9.80). Conclusions: Working from home is associated with an increased HRPL in the Korean working population, especially among those with chronic diseases, those who do not live alone, and those who do not exercise regularly.

Kimchi cabbage, the key ingredient in kimchi, is cultivated year-round to meet high production demands. This study aimed to examine the effects of seasonal harvesting (spring, summer, fall, and winter) on the microbial and metabolic profiles of kimchi during 30 days of fermentation. Lactic acid bacteria distribution is notably influenced by seasonal variations, with Latilactobacillus dominant in fall-harvested kimchi group and Weissella prevailing in spring, summer, and winter. The microbial communities of spring and fall group exhibited similar profiles before fermentation, whereas the microbial communities and metabolic profiles of spring and summer group were similar after 30 days of fermentation. Seasonal disparities in metabolite concentrations, including glutamic acid, serine, and cytosine, persist throughout fermentation. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the substantial impact of seasonal harvesting of kimchi cabbage on the microbial and metabolic characteristics of kimchi, providing valuable insights into producing kimchi with diverse qualities.

ABSTRACT

Background: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) expressing eosinophilia experience slightly fewer episodes of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) than those without eosinophilia. However, the severity and burden of hospitalized pneumonia patients with COPD concerning eosinophilia have not been assessed. Methods: We evaluated the differences in clinical characteristics between patients with CAP and COPD with or without eosinophilia by a post-hoc analysis of a prospective, multi-center, cohort study data. Results: Of 349 CAP patients with COPD, 45 (12.9%) had eosinophilia (blood eosinophil ≥ 300 cells/µL). Patients with eosinophilia had a lower sputum culture percentile (8.1% vs. 23.4%, P < 0.05), a lower percentile of neutrophils (70.3% vs 80.2%, P<0.05), reduced C-reactive protein levels (30.6 mg/L vs 86.6 mg/L, P<0.05), and a lower pneumonia severity index score (82.5 vs. 90.0, P < 0.05) than those without eosinophilia. The duration of antibiotic treatment (8.0 days vs. 10.0 days, P < 0.05) and hospitalization (7.0 days vs. 9.0 days, P < 0.05) were shorter in eosinophilic patients. The cost of medical care per day (256.4 US$ vs. 291.0 US$, P < 0.05), cost for the medication (276.4 US$ vs. 349.9 US$, P < 0.05), and cost for examination (685.5 US$ vs 958.1 US$, P<0.05) were lower in patients with eosinophilia than those without eosinophilia. Conclusion: Eosinophilia serves as a favorable marker for severity of pneumonia, health-care consumption, and cost of medical care in patients with CAP and COPD.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: This study aims to reevaluate upper reference limit (URL) for alanine aminotransferase (ALT) by considering the changing epidemiology of major liver diseases. We employed histological and metabolic parameters in Asian living liver donors. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 5455 potential living liver donors from 2005 to 2019. Participants were screened for hepatitis B, C, HIV, and alcohol use. Histologically and metabolically healthy participants were assessed using the Prati criteria (body mass index <23 kg/m2, triglyceride ≤200 mg/dL, fasting glucose ≤105 mg/dL, total cholesterol ≤220 mg/dL). The updated ALT-URL was determined as the 95th percentile among participants without hepatic steatosis and who met the Prati criteria. RESULTS: The median age was 30 years, with a male predominance (66.2%). Among 5455 participants, 3162 (58.0%) showed no hepatic steatosis, with 1553 (49.1%) meeting both the criteria for no steatosis and the Prati criteria for metabolic health. The updated URL for ALT in these participants was 34 U/L for males and 22 U/L for females, which was significantly lower than conventionally accepted values. Using this revised ALT-URL, 72.8% of males with ALT levels ≥34 U/L and 55.0% of females with ALT levels ≥22 U/L showed signs of steatosis, whereas 32.7% of males and 22.2% of females met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided the newly established reference intervals for ALT levels in a metabolically and histologically verified Asian population. The proposed URL for ALT are 34 U/L and 22 U/L for males and females, respectively.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify clinical and radiologic characteristics that could predict response to atezolizumab-bevacizumab combination therapy in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: This single-center retrospective study included 108 advanced HCC patients with intrahepatic lesions who were treated with atezolizumab-bevacizumab. Two radiologists independently analyzed Imaging characteristics of the index tumor on pretreatment computed tomography. Predictive factors associated with progressive disease (PD) at the best response based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, Version 1.1 were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Progression-free survival (PFS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Results: Of 108 patients with a median PFS of 15 weeks, 40 (37.0%) had PD during treatment. Factors associated with PD included the presence of extrahepatic metastases (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19-14.35; p=0.03), the infiltrative appearance of the tumor (aOR, 3.07; 95% CI, 1.05-8.93; p=0.04), and the absence of arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE) (aOR, 6.34; 95% CI, 2.18-18.47; p<0.001). Patients with two or more of these factors had a PD of 66.7% and a median PFS of 8 weeks, indicating a significantly worse outcome compared to the patients with one or no of these factors. Conclusion: In patients with advanced HCC treated with atezolizumab-bevacizumab treatment, the absence of APHE, infiltrative appearance of the intrahepatic tumor, and presence of extrahepatic metastases were associated with poor response and survival. Evaluation of early response may be necessary in patients with these factors.

Introduction: The strawberry industry in South Korea has witnessed a significant 65% growth over the past decade, surpassing other fruits and vegetables in production value. While sweetness and acidity are well-recognized flavor determinants, the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in defining the desirable flavor profiles of strawberries is also crucial. However, existing research has predominantly concentrated on a limited range of commercial cultivars, neglecting the broader spectrum of strawberry varieties. Methods: This study embarked on developing a comprehensive VOC database for a diverse array of strawberry cultivars sourced both domestically and internationally. A total of 61 different strawberry cultivars from Korea (45), the USA (7), Japan (8), and France (1) were analyzed for their VOC content using Tenax TA Thermo Desorption tubes and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). In addition to VOC profiling, heritability was assessed using one-way ANOVA to compare means among multiple groups, providing insights into the genetic basis of flavor differences. Results and discussion: The analysis identified 122 compounds categorized into esters, alcohols, terpenes, and lactones, with esters constituting the majority (46.5%) of total VOCs in Korean cultivars. 'Arihyang', 'Sunnyberry', and 'Kingsberry' exhibited the highest diversity of VOCs detected (97 types), whereas 'Seolhong' showed the highest overall concentration (57.5mg·kg-1 FW). Compared to the USA cultivars, which were abundant in γ-decalactone (a peach-like fruity aroma), most domestic cultivars lacked this compound. Notably, 'Misohyang' displayed a high γ-decalactone content, highlighting its potential as breeding germplasm to improve flavor in Korean strawberries. The findings underscore the importance of a comprehensive VOC analysis across different strawberry cultivars to understand flavor composition. The significant variation in VOC content among the cultivars examined opens avenues for targeted breeding strategies. By leveraging the distinct VOC profiles, particularly the presence of γ-decalactone, breeders can develop new strawberry varieties with enhanced flavor profiles, catering to consumer preferences for both domestic and international markets.

Background: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of liver resection (LR) and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with multinodular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the Milan criteria who were not eligible for liver transplantation. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 483 patients with multinodular HCC within the Milan criteria, who underwent either LR or TACE as an initial therapy between 2013 and 2022. The overall survival (OS) in the entire population and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients who underwent LR and TACE and achieved a complete response were analyzed. Propensity score (PS) matching analysis was also used for a fair comparison of outcomes between the two groups. Results: Among the 483 patients, 107 (22.2%) and 376 (77.8%) underwent LR and TACE, respectively. The median size of the largest tumor was 2.0 cm, and 72.3% of the patients had two HCC lesions. The median OS and RFS were significantly longer in the LR group than in the TACE group (p <0.01 for both). In the multivariate analysis, TACE (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.81 and aHR, 2.41) and large tumor size (aHR, 1.43 and aHR, 1.44) were significantly associated with worse OS and RFS, respectively. The PS-matched analysis also demonstrated that the LR group had significantly longer OS and RFS than the TACE group (PS <0.05). Conclusion: In this study, LR showed better OS and RFS than TACE in patients with multinodular Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A HCC. Therefore, LR can be considered an effective treatment option for these patients.

Background: The present study aimed to analyze several aspects of the working conditions and health status of platform workers in the Republic of Korea, such as ergonomic and emotional hazards. We also compared the health status of the platform workers with that of the general population. Methods: A total of 1,000 platform workers participated in this survey from August 7 to August 17, 2022. The participants included 400 designated drivers, 400 food-delivery drivers, and 200 housekeeping managers. A face-to-face survey with a structured questionnaire was conducted by researchers who had received specific instructions. The focus of the survey extended to the work environment, encompassing factors such as workplace violence, as well as physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards. Health-related data for the previous year were also collected, covering a range of issues such as hearing problems, skin problems, musculoskeletal symptoms, headaches, injuries, mental health issues, and digestive problems. Subsequently, we compared the health symptom data of the responders with those of the general population in the Republic of Korea. Results: Platform workers, including designated drivers, food-delivery drivers, and housekeeping managers, existed in the blind spot of social insurance, facing frequent exposure to physical and chemical hazards, ergonomic risk factors, and direct or indirect violence. The prevalence of health problems, including musculoskeletal symptoms, general fatigue, and depressive symptoms, in each occupational group was statistically higher than that in the general population after standardization for age and gender. Conclusion: The results revealed unfavorable working environment and inferior occupational health of platform workers compared with those of the general population.

BACKGROUND: Handgrip strength (HGS) is acknowledged as a key indicator of overall physical fitness and is associated with various health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This research investigates the correlation between HGS and quality of life (QoL), focusing on its relation to pulmonary function in the general adult population. METHOD: The study involved 19,402 participants aged 40 and above, spanning from 2014 to 2019, who underwent pulmonary function and HGS tests. Participants were categorized based on lung function, and regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship between HGS and QoL, with adjustments made for lung function. RESULTS: The average age of the cohort was 58.2 years, comprising 44.6% males and 41.2% smokers. Out of the 18,708 participants who completed the European Quality of Life Scale-Five Dimensions (EQ-5D-3L) assessment, higher severity levels in mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain or discomfort, and anxiety or depression were linked to lower HGS in both sexes. Additionally, among the 3,723 participants who completed the Health-related Quality of Life Instrument with 8 Items (HINT-8) assessment, higher severity levels in pain, work, and depression were associated with lower HGS in men. In women, higher severity levels in climbing stairs, pain, vitality, and work correlated with lower HGS. CONCLUSIONS: As problems indicated by EQ-5D worsened, there was a consistent decrease in handgrip strength (HGS) across both genders. The HINT-8 assessment further revealed that increased severity in pain and work-related issues led to reduced HGS in both men and women. This study highlights the relationship between HGS and Quality of Life (QoL), taking lung function into consideration, and underscores the importance of HGS as a potential marker of physical health and fitness.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension, a major public health problem worldwide, has been linked to lifestyle factors and work conditions, with conflicting evidence on the association between long work hours and risk of hypertension. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to investigate the relationship between working hours and hypertension or blood pressure, assessed the risk of bias and performed subgroup analyses. The protocol was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews. RESULTS: The pooled OR for the association between long working hours and risk of hypertension was 1.09 (95% CI: 0.88 to 1.35) in the 15 studies that used hypertension as the outcome. In the three studies that used blood pressure as the outcome, diastolic blood pressure was higher among those with long working hours compared with those with non-long working hours (1.24 mm Hg, 95% CI: 0.19 to 2.29). In subgroup analysis, the pooled OR for the association between long working hours and risk of hypertension was 1.28 (95% CI: 1.14 to 1.44) and 1.00 (95% CI: 0.64 to 1.56) in women and men, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Although this study could not clearly confirm the relationship between long working hours and hypertension, the subgroup analysis suggests that long working hours may be associated with hypertension, particularly among women. BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a condition with an uncertain global incidence, and information on its diagnosis and management is limited. This study aimed to address these knowledge gaps. METHODS: This study utilized customized claims data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) in South Korea from January 2010, to December 2021. Patients with HP were identified based on the diagnosis code (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, J67) between 2011 and 2020. Incident HP cases were defined as new HP claims, excluding those with claims in the previous year. The study examined various factors such as age, sex, comorbidities, diagnostic methods, and treatment patterns. Additionally, multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with treatment initiation. RESULTS: A total of 8,678 HP incident cases were confirmed, with age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence rates ranging from 1.14/100,000 in 2020 to 2.16/100,000 in 2012. The mean age of patients with incident HP was 52 years, with a higher incidence observed among males. Additionally, the most common comorbidity was asthma. Bronchoscopy was performed on 16.9% of patients, and 25.4% of patients did not receive treatment within 1 year of diagnosis. Among those who received treatment, prednisone was the most used systemic steroid, and azathioprine was the most commonly used second-line immunosuppressant. Factors associated with treatment initiation included the female sex, having asthma or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and undergoing bronchoscopy. CONCLUSION: This study provides valuable insights into the incidence, diagnosis, and treatment patterns of HP in South Korea using nationwide medical claims data.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has set targets to eliminate viral hepatitis, including hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, by 2030. We present the results of the in-hospital Reflex tEsting ALarm-C (REAL-C) model, which incorporates reflex HCV RNA testing and sending alerts to physicians. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study analysing the data of 1730 patients who newly tested positive for anti-HCV between March 2020 and June 2023. Three distinct periods were defined: pre-REAL-C (n = 696), incomplete REAL-C (n = 515) and complete REAL-C model periods (n = 519). The primary outcome measure was the HCV RNA testing rate throughout the study period. Additionally, we assessed the referral rate to the gastroenterology department, linkage time for diagnosis and treatment and the treatment rate. RESULTS: The rate of HCV RNA testing increased significantly from 51.0% (pre-REAL-C) to 95.6% (complete REAL-C). This improvement was consistent across clinical departments, regardless of patients' comorbidities. Among patients with confirmed HCV infection, the gastroenterology referral rate increased from 57.1% to 81.1% after the REAL-C model. The treatment rate among treatment-eligible patients was 92.4% during the study period. The mean interval from anti-HCV positivity to HCV RNA testing decreased from 45.1 to 1.9 days. The mean interval from the detection of anti-HCV positivity to direct-acting antiviral treatment also decreased from 89.5 to 49.5 days with the REAL-C model. CONCLUSION: The REAL-C model, featuring reflex testing and physician alerts, effectively increased HCV RNA testing rates and streamlined care cascades. Our model facilitated progress towards achieving WHO's elimination goals for HCV infection.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Tumour microenvironment heterogeneity among different organs can influence immunotherapy responses. Here, we evaluated the impact of differential organ-specific responses on survival in patients with advanced-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Atezo/Bev). METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 366 consecutive patients with advanced-stage HCC treated with Atezo/Bev as first-line systemic treatment. Therapeutic response was assessed using RECIST v1.1. Patients were divided into an intention-to-treat (ITT) group (patients treated with ≥1 dose of Atezo/Bev) and a per-protocol (PP) analysis group (patients with at least one measurable lesion irrespective of location treated with ≥3 doses of Atezo/Bev). Overall response and organ-specific response at initial and best response were evaluated in the PP group. Responders were defined as patients achieving complete remission or partial response. Initial progressors were defined as patients with progressive disease after three doses of Atezo/Bev. RESULTS: The ITT and PP groups comprised 324 and 236 patients, respectively. In the PP group, the organ-specific response rate of lung and lymph node (LN) metastases at both initial and best responses were higher than those of intrahepatic lesions and macrovascular tumour thrombosis. Lung and LN-specific response rates were 21.1% and 23.5%, respectively, at initial response, and 24.7% and 31.4%, respectively, at best response. Both initial pulmonary and lymphatic progressors (adjusted hazard ratios [95% confidence intervals], 6.37 [2.10-19.3], and 8.36 [2.16-32.4], respectively) were independently associated with survival regardless of intrahepatic response. CONCLUSIONS: The response of metastatic HCC to the Atezo/Bev regimen may be used to determine whether to continue treatment or switch to second-line treatment at an early phase of therapy.

ABSTRACT

To elucidate the anti-inflammatory properties and constituents of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. (A. pilosa), a comprehensive investigation was conducted employing activity-guided isolation. The anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated through an in vitro nitric oxide (NO) assay on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Seven bio-active compounds with anti-inflammatory properties were successfully isolated from the butanol fraction and identified as follows: quercetin-7-O-ß-d-rhamnoside (1), apigenin-7-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside (2), kaempferol-7-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside (3), quercetin (4), kaempferol (5), apigenin (6), and apigenin-7-O-ß-d-glucuronide-6″-butylester (7). All isolated compounds showed strong NO inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 1.4 to 31 µM. Compound 6 demonstrated the most potent NO inhibition. Compound 7, a rare flavonoid, was discerned as a novel anti-inflammatory agent, ascertained through its inaugural demonstration of nitric oxide inhibition. Subsequently, a comprehensive structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis was conducted employing eight flavonoids derived from A. pilosa. The outcomes elucidated that flavones exhibit superior NO inhibitory effects compared to flavonols, and the aglycone form manifests greater potency in NO inhibition than the glycone counterpart. These results highlight A. pilosa as a promising source of effective anti-inflammatory agents and indicate its potential as a health-beneficial dietary supplement and therapeutic material.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the relationship between ergonomic risk exposures and insomnia symptoms, using data representative of Korea's general working population. METHODS: Data from the 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey were used for this study. The eligible population (employees) for the current study was 37,026. Insomnia symptoms were estimated using the minimal insomnia symptom scale (MISS) questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the association between ergonomic risks and insomnia symptoms. RESULTS: All the investigated ergonomic risks increased odd ratios (ORs) for insomnia symptoms: Tiring or painful positions (OR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.43-1.88); lifting or moving heavy loads (OR, 2.33; 95% CI, 1.99-2.71); long periods of standing (OR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.29-1.69); and repetitive hand or arm movements (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.29-1.67). The mediated proportion of musculoskeletal pain was 7.4% (95% CI, 5.81-10.13), and the mediated proportion of feeling of exhaustion was 17.5% (95% CI, 5.81-10.13). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence for the relationship between ergonomic risks and insomnia symptoms, for which musculoskeletal pains and the feeling of exhaustion may be potential mediators.
