ABSTRACT

Consistent positive relationships have been found between birth weight and grip strength in adults but evidence in children is limited. In a prospective general population birth cohort (Southampton Women's Survey) grip strength and anthropometry (height and weight) were measured in 968 children at age 4 years. Mean (standard deviation (S.D.)) birth weight was 3.48 (0.52) kg. Birth weight, adjusted for sex and gestational age, was positively associated with grip strength (ß = 0.22 kg/S.D. increase in adjusted birth weight; 95% CI 0.11, 0.34). The relationship was attenuated after adjustment for current height and weight such that it became non-significant (ß = 0.03 kg/S.D. increase in adjusted birth weight; 95% CI -0.08, 0.14), suggesting that body size may be on the causal pathway. Early influences on muscle development appear to impact on grip strength in children as well as adults.

ABSTRACT

Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ((18)FDG-PET) is currently the best noninvasive test to confirm hepatic metastases when diagnostic uncertainty exists after initial imaging with first-line modalities. However, we report the second case of "false-positive" uptake of (18)FDG on PET scanning from a histopathologically confirmed hepatic adenoma.

ABSTRACT

Two quantitative methods of measuring intrinsic uniformity of gamma cameras have been compared. One is a modified NEMA protocol, and the other a simpler method of data acquisition and processing that can be carried out in departments with restricted data-processing facilities. Both methods show the same trend in uniformity and lead to action being taken to rectify deterioration in performance at the same time. The use of cusum plots to monitor trends in performance and set action levels is discussed and compared with a simple plot of the data as a time series.
