ABSTRACT

The article covers up-to-date information about the incidence of psychosomatic pathology among patients of gastroenterologic profile including patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and syndrome of irritable colon. From the point of view of psychosomatic idea the article considers the factors predisposing, permitting and retarding the development of the disease. A detailed description is available in psychosomatic disturbances, modern concepts about their pathogenesis including a break of correlation between limbic and frontal regions of central nervous system and disorder in serotonin metabolism--clinical manifestations, methods of diagnosis and treatment including selective inhibitors and stimulators of serotonin reuptake and neuroleptics.

ABSTRACT

Hemifacial microsomia is a congenital abnormality which results in progressive, three-dimensional facial asymmetry in the growing child. Functional appliance therapy was instituted in an 11 year, 7 month old boy with hemifacial microsomia in order to determine if symmetry could be re-established by promoting masticatory muscle function on the affected side, thereby stimulating bone growth in the affected condyle over and above what would occur without any treatment intervention. Removable functional appliance therapy, and later, unilateral Herbst appliance therapy, produced a dramatic change in the condylar growth on the affected side. Herbst therapy has the advantage over a removable functional appliance in that patient acceptance is much greater. Lack of patient compliance may be the primary cause of the variable results obtained with functional appliances in hemifacial microsomia cases as reported in the literature.

ABSTRACT

The effect of deciduous tooth extraction in the late mixed dentition on the eruption of succedaneous teeth was studied in ten Macaca nemestrina. Nineteen deciduous teeth were extracted: nine maxillary and ten mandibular left deciduous first molars. Regardless of sex, arch, chronologic or dental age, all first premolars on the experimental side erupted before those on the control side and this pattern was statistically significant. Extraction of deciduous molars in the late mixed dentition is seen to accelerate eruption of first premolars in Macaca nemestrina. This could be the result of eliminating the need for deciduous tooth root resorption during the normal process of eruption.

ABSTRACT

A recently developed system of mirror holders which makes the taking of standardized intraoral photographs less time consuming and more precise has been described. By fixing the relationship of the intraoral mirror to the camera, all that is necessary is to consistently orient the mirror to the teeth being photographed. Because the operator no longer has to position the mirror with one hand while holding the camera in the other hand, the whole operation of intraoral photography is greatly simplified. By producing serial slides of the progress of orthodontic treatment, a visual sequence of treatment can be prepared for viewing by patients, for educational purposes, and for showing at meetings and study clubs.

ABSTRACT

Details of a surgical technique to divide the free gingival and transseptal fibers around rotated teeth that have been corrected orthodontically are outlined. The rationale of the procedure, its applications, indications, and contraindications are discussed. Supracrestal fiberotomy is not a substitute but an adjunct to normal retention procedures.

ABSTRACT

The accuracy of prediction of three mixed dentition analyses was compared. Hixon and Oldfather's method was found to be the most accurate. A simplified version of the analysis obviates referral to a table, allowing assessment of the size of the unerupted teeth prior to eruption of the lateral incisor.

ABSTRACT

This article has reported on a survey of 1,000 randomly selected orthodontists in the United States to ascertain the incidence of use of the circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy technique to minimize rotational relapse. It was also the purpose of the study to determine whether any problems were associated with the procedure. While the surgical technique is not widely prescribed, there are regional differences. The result of this survey tend to indicate that the technique is reasonably problem-free and that its use probably will be increasing in the future. It should be emphasized that quantitative long-term studies of the effectiveness of the procedure and of possible periodontal sequelae have to date not been reported in the literature.
