ABSTRACT

Following a traumatic event such as intimate partner violence (IPV), survivors often experience stress related to the violence. These high levels of stress related to IPV can be associated with the daily activities of survivors and their relationships with their children, such as maternal-child bonding. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between daily activities, daily stress levels, parenting self-efficacy and behaviors, and maternal-child bonding among survivors living in an IPV shelter using an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology. Twenty-five mothers living in an IPV shelter in two states in the Southern United States completed a baseline survey and completed electronic daily diaries for 14 days. Higher daily stress was associated with the number of times the mothers met with the case manager. Higher daily stress was also related to lower parenting self-efficacy. The number of case management appointments and legal appointments were positively correlated with a higher bonding score. More social support was associated with more positive parenting. IPV and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms were not significantly associated with maternal-child bonding, parenting behaviors, or parenting self-efficacy. Findings suggest that screening for maternal support may be particularly important for positive bonding and positive parenting. Findings also lend preliminary insight into practical places where service providers could act to protect the bonding process or mitigate risks to impede it. Future research should include objective data about the mother's emotions and her interactive behavior with her child. There is also a need to consider how federal programs fund and incentivize service providers to focus on mother-child dyads and how they can tailor services that promote bonding.

ABSTRACT

Background: Maxillary molar endodontic treatments require the right post and core system. This study tested cast metal, glass fiber with composite resin, carbon fiber with composite resin, and zirconia post and core materials. Materials and Methods: Sixty removed human maxillary teeth were randomly divided into four post and core material groups (n = 15 per group). The teeth acquired their post and core system after normal endodontic treatment. Fracture resistance, cyclic fatigue resistance, and microleakage analyses were statistically assessed. Results: The zirconia post and core material had the highest fracture resistance (mean: 900 N), followed by carbon fiber with composite resin, cast metal, and glass fiber with composite resin. Zirconia had the highest mean cycles to failure (120,000), followed by carbon fiber with composite resin (100,000), cast metal (110,000), and glass fiber with composite resin (90,000). Zirconia had the lowest mean microleakage score (1.8), and glass fiber with composite resin, the highest (3.0). Conclusion: The zirconia post and core material outperformed the others in fracture resistance, cyclic fatigue resistance, and sealing. The cast metal has better fracture and cycle fatigue resistance than glass fiber with composite resin. These findings help doctors choose maxillary molar endodontic post and core materials.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Immigrants comprise a sizable proportion (15%) of the population living in the United States (U.S.). Given these proportions, it is imperative that we understand immigrant experiences of well-being and stress toward improved well-being and integration. METHODS: To examine the experiences of first- and second-generation immigrants using a comparative approach, we utilized data from two surveys collected under Trump (n = 490) and Biden (n = 306) administrations. Both studies employed non-probability quota and convenience sampling techniques. Questions about experiences of stress (PSS-4), discrimination (Everyday Discrimination Scale), resilience (Brief Resilience Scale), border stress (Border Community and Immigration Stress Scale), immigration policies (general questions) were included in the surveys. Each study sample included diverse racial groups across both immigrant generations. We report frequencies, descriptive statistics, and ANOVAs/post hoc test results. RESULTS: Findings highlight that levels of both stress and discrimination among non-White participants under the Trump administration were significantly higher than those of White participants, though neither relationship was significant under the Biden administration. Further, White participants exhibited higher resilience under the Trump administration, but not under the Biden administration. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study to comparatively examine immigrant experiences under the two most recent federal administrations. This study is seminal in highlighting discussions and making policy recommendations to limit immigrant exclusion, curtail exclusionary policies regarding travel bans, and improve pathways to citizenship, enhancing immigrant integration in the U.S. Roles of social workers in supporting immigrant communities and pathways for future research with immigrants are discussed.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a new platelet concentrate concept consisting of an autologous fibrin gel having accumulation of platelets and the released cytokines in a fibrin clot. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of autologous PRF in accelerating bone regeneration and repair in fresh third molar extraction sockets. The investigators hypothesized the cicatricial properties and accumulation of growth factors in a single clot which will improve bone density and quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PRF results from a natural and progressive polymerization occurring during centrifugation. Two groups were made with bilaterally impacted third molar patients. PRF was obtained and surgical extraction was carried out under aseptic conditions. Quantitative data are presented as mean. Statistical significance was inferred at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Results obtained were evaluated statistically and found a significant difference between the groups in improvement in alveolar bone density of regenerate measured radiographically. The study demonstrates a faster bone formation in the extracted sockets with PRF as compared to control. CONCLUSION: PRF proved to be an autologous biomaterial with useful features that allowed efficient postextraction bone defect filling and faster bone regeneration.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Endodontic sealer should adhere to both dentin and the core filling material but the moisture conditions of the canals affect the adhesive properties of the sealer. An ideal sealer with perfect moisture conditions will lead to greater strength of the restored tooth, which may provide greater resistance to tooth fracture and clinical longevity of an endodontically treated tooth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of moisture conditions on the push-out bond strength of three root canal sealers: AH Plus® (Dentsply-Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK), Epiphany (Pentron Clinical Technologies, Wallingford, CT), and GuttaFlow (Coltene/Whaledent, Altstatten, Switzerland). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 single-rooted, non-carious teeth were collected for the study and were stored in normal saline. The root canals were prepared using step-back technique. Teeth were divided into four groups based on type of drying procedure used and further subdivided into three subgroups based on the type of sealer used. The samples were cut horizontally to produce slices and then tested for push-out bond strength using Universal Testing Machine (Servo Series 50 kN; P S I Sales Private Limited, New Delhi, India). The specimens were examined for mode of fracture under magnification and the results were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Distinctive moisture conditions for all sealers were observed and the highest strength of AH Plus® was evaluated under moist condition, Epiphany under dry condition, and GuttaFlow under normal condition, respectively. CONCLUSION: Distinctive moisture conditions affect the push-out bond strength of the sealers.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of the study is to evaluate fracture resistance of nanocomposites with and without fiber reinforcement with different cavity designs used for obliquely fractured incisal edge restoration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, 60 sound extracted maxillary central incisors were mounted on autopolymerizable acrylic resin up to the cementoenamel junction, out of which, 10 intact teeth were kept as control (group 1) and the remaining 50 samples were reduced incisally in an oblique manner up to 3 mm. All incisally reduced samples were divided into five groups (n = 10) based on the restoration techniques as follows: group 2 (conventional bevel), group 3 (single central palatal slot on the incisal edge), group 4 (single palatal slot with central 2 mm fiber), group 5 (two palatal slots on the incisal edge with a distance of 0.5 mm to 1 mm between them), and group 6 (two slots on the incisal edge with two 2 mm fibers). All samples were built incrementally with nanocomposites followed by finishing and polishing. All samples including control were then stored in distilled water before their fracture resistance was measured using a universal testing machine. Failure modes were visually examined and the results were subjected to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean fracture resistance among the experimental groups was observed, group 4 with single fiber in the central position had the highest (832.68 N) followed by group 3 (490.84 N), group 5 (446.175), and group 2 (270.1359), and the least in group 6 (223.443). The mean fracture resistance of group 4 is comparable to intact teeth, i.e., group 1 (1096.40). The mean of all samples was compared using the one-way Anova test, and it was found that there is statistically significant difference in fracture resistance among groups (p < 0.001**). CONCLUSION: Fibers certainly have the reinforcing effect and the position of fibers determines their reinforcing effects. A single central slot with fiber (Ribbond) showed maximum fracture resistance almost equivalent to natural teeth. Modifying conventional beveled cavity design with an additional slot in the center also increases the fractural strength of restoration. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Nanocomposites reinforced with single fiber in the central palatal slot used for restoring fractured incisors provide strength almost equivalent to natural teeth. In case when the fiber is not available for preparing a single palatal slot also, we can increase the fracture resistance.
