ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to determine dimensions of the normal menisci in 174 healthy subjects by using MRI. The menisci were divided into three zones (anterior horn, mid-body, posterior horn). The height and width of the both menisci were measured. For the medial meniscus; the height and width of the anterior horn were 5.32 mm and 7.78 mm, the height and width of the mid-body were 5.03 mm and 7.37 mm, and the height and width of the posterior horn were 5.53 mm and 11.71 mm, respectively. For the lateral meniscus, the height and width of the anterior horn were 4.33 mm and 8.88 mm, the height and width of the mid-body were 4.94 mm and 8.37 mm, and the height and width of the posterior horn were 5.36 mm and 9.70 mm, respectively. Three cases (1.7%) of discoid lateral meniscus were encountered. The results of this study should help to establish standard measurements, and to differentiate between normal and pathologic conditions of the menisci of the knee joint.

ABSTRACT

Bone grafting is an essential part of most total hip acetabular reconstructions. There are a limited number of surgical options, each with inherent disadvantages for the management of structural acetabular defects. In this cadaver study, the authors aimed to evaluate the availability of vascularized pedicled iliac crest graft for the purpose of acetabular reconstruction. The hip joints, ilia and deep circumflex iliac artery pedicles of six adult preserved cadavers were dissected bilaterally. A segment of the iliac crest was elevated on the vascular pedicle and its access to different parts of the acetabulum was evaluated. The average pedicle length was sufficient for coverage of the superior and anterior acetabular walls. The access to the posterior wall, however, required modification of the bone size. A vascularized pedicled iliac crest graft is suitable for the reconstruction of selected acetabular deficiencies.

ABSTRACT

We prospectively investigated the outcome of a combination therapy of oral amitriptyline and sympathetic ganglion blockade on 10 patients suffering from reflex sympathetic dystrophy of the upper extremity for at least three months. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated by clinical examination, pain ratings on the visual analogue scale (VAS) and grip strength measurements using the Jamar dynamometer. The results were statistically analysed with Wilcoxon signed-ranks test for comparison of the before and after treatment grip strength measurements and with paired t-test for comparison of the mean of initial and consecutive pain ratings on the VAS. Values of p < 0.01 were considered to be statistically significant. Combination therapy proved beneficial in this particular patient population, which, as far as previously documented studies are concerned, would otherwise respond less favourably to a treatment consisting solely of sympathetic blockade.
