ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Family accommodation (FA) is associated with disease severity and response to treatment rates in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is therefore particularly important in this patient group. This study investigated the structure of FA and associated factors in a Turkish society sample. METHODS: The study was carried out with 92 patients diagnosed with OCD for at least 1 year, who applied to Alanya ALKU Training and Research Hospital psychiatry outpatient clinic between February 2021 and March 2022. Sociodemographic data form, Family Accommodation Scale-Patient Form (FAS-PF), Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II) were applied to all of the cases. Relatives filled out the Sociodemographic Data. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 32.11 ± 11.56 years. Sixty-nine (75%) of the patients were women. Fifty (54.3%) patients weremarried. All participants reported FA behavior at least once in the previous week. FA exhibited no significant variation by sex (p = 0.679)or marital status (p = 0.256). Significant positive correlation was determined between DOCS-T (r = 0.370, p < 0.001), AAQ-II (r = 0.261, p = 0.013), BDI (r = 0.235, p = 0.024) and BAI (r = 0.342, p = 0.001) scores and the FAS-PF. In the regression analysis, only OCD disease severity predicted FA [(ß = 0.295, p = 0.036, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 0.02 to 0.55)]. Higher FA scores were obtained in this study (23.93 ± 15.28) compared to previous research in Western societies (14.3 ± 15.2). DISCUSSION: Clinicians should consider FA in the examination of OCD patients. High FA values for both frequency and severity suggestthat interventions directed toward FA may be associated with more positive outcomes in outpatient Turkish patients with OCD.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aims to compare patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder (PD), whom we have frequently seen in our hospital practice during the pandemic, with healthy controls (HC) in terms of coronavirus anxiety levels and coping strategies. Methods: In this study, the Sociodemographic Data Form, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) scale were applied to the participants. 30 MDD patients, 32 GAD patients, 31 PD patients and 38 HCs, totaling 131 participants, constituted the sample of the study. Results: Evaluation of the CAS scores of the participants revealed that HC scored 3.306 (p=0.002) points lower than GAD patients and 3.014 (p=0.005) points lower than PD patients, while HC and major depression patients were not statistically different in terms of CAS scores (p=0.880). In the comparison of coping strategies, HC scored 3.151 (p<0.001) points higher than MDD patients and 2.059 (p=0.004) points higher than GAD patients in terms of "active coping." In terms of "planning," HC scored 2.726 (p<0.001) points higher than MDD patients, 2.589 (p=0.001) points higher than GAD patients, and 2.171 (p=0.006) points higher than PD patients. Conclusion: This study found higher coronavirus anxiety levels in GAD and PD patients but no difference in MDD patients compared to HC during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may indicate that MDD patients can COPE better with coronavirus anxiety. Determining the coping strategies that individuals use to COPE with coronavirus anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic may help mental health professionals to control disease-related stressors and contribute to the treatment process.

Introduction It is seen that shift work causes various biological, psychological, and behavioral problems in individuals. This study aimed to determine the eating attitudes and behaviors of health workers working in shifts in a stressful environment such as the emergency service and to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, and stress levels and eating behaviors (emotional eating, restrictive eating, and external eating) in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Material and Methods Sociodemographic data form; Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS); and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) were used. The study sample consisted of 92 employees (doctor, nurse, emergency medical technician (EMT), medical secretary, and security, staff) who were actively on duty in the emergency department of Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Medical Faculty Training and Research Hospital. Results In our study, when the eating behavior of emergency service workers was evaluated in terms of "emotional, external, and restricted eating" sub-dimensions, depression (p=0.043), anxiety (p=0.017), increased stress levels (p=0.002), being female (p=0.022), nurse-emergency medical technician profession (p=0.001), working in 24-hour shifts (p=0.001), and diet history (p=0.013) were associated with "emotional eating." In addition, an increase in depression levels (p=0.048), being single (p=0.015), working in 24-hour shifts (p=0.005), a decrease in age (p<0.001) with "extrinsic eating," an increase in body mass index (BMI) (p=0.020) and waist circumference (p=0.049), and diet history (p<0.001) were associated with "restricted eating." Conclusions In our study, among the sociodemographic factors, being female, being single, working in 24-hour shifts, diet history, nurse-EMT profession, and undergraduate education level were found to increase the tendency to develop eating behavior problems. An increase in depression levels, being single, working in 24-hour shifts, and a decrease in age were associated with "extrinsic eating." There is a correlation between depression, anxiety, and stress scores and emotional eating scores. Additionally, we found significant correlations between body mass index, waist circumference, diet history, and restricted eating scores. In the approach to eating behavior problems, it is important to determine the individual eating behavior disorder. Due to the increased risk of eating behavior disorder in those who work in long shifts such as 24 hours, it will be possible to organize work programs and increase the quality of service.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether some temperamental traits would be associated with persistence of attention deficit-hyperacitivty disorder (ADHD) in adulthood independent from bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: Eighty-one ADHD patients without a comorbid diagnosis of BD were divided into two groups, those with childhood ADHD (n=46), and those with Adulthood ADHD (n=35). The severity of childhood and adulthood ADHD were assessed by using the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS-25) and Turgay's Adult ADD/ADHD Diagnosis and Evaluation Scale (DES). Subjects' temperamental characteristics were examined using the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-auto questionnaire (TEMPS-A). RESULTS: The mean scores of WURS-25 were higher in adult ADHD group than in childhood ADHD group (p<0.001). Adult ADHD group had significantly higher scores on cyclothymic (p=0.002), irritable (p<0.0001), and anxious (p=0.042) subscales of TEMPS-A. The scores of WURS-25 in adulthood ADHD group were positively correlated with cyclothymia scores (r=0.366, p=0.033). Total scores of Turgay's Adult ADD/ADHD DES were positively correlated with cyclothymic (r=0.354, p=0.040), hyperthymic (r=0.380, p=0.026), and irritable (r=0.380, p=0.026) subscale scores. Cychlothymic and irritable temperaments were significantly associated with the severity of adulthood symptoms of ADHD. CONCLUSION: We might suggest that cyclothymic and irritable temperaments would predict the diagnosis of adulthood ADHD independent from BD.

BACKGROUND: The biological and psychological aspects of post-stroke depression (PSD) may vary based on the time since stroke onset. The sociodemographic and clinical correlates of early-onset PSD are not yet well understood. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the clinical correlates of early-onset depression following first stroke. We hypothesized that the severity of a stroke or disability (other than lesion characteristics) would likely be related to PSD in a sample of first stroke patients with single and unilateral lesions. METHODS: Post-stroke patients with (n = 40) and without (n = 51) early-onset depression were compared with respect to several demographic and clinical variables. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the groups with respect to lesion location, lateralization, or volume. Scores on the Brief Disability Questionnaire, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, and Modified Rankin Scale were significantly higher in depressed post-stroke patients than in non-depressed patients. The anxiety, depression, and total scores of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were positively correlated with the Modified Rankin Scale, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, and Brief Disability Questionnaire scores. A previous history of depression and Brief Disability Questionnaire score were strongly associated with the occurrence of early-onset PSD. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that early-onset PSD is likely to be correlated with the severity of stroke and functional disability.

ABSTRACT

We examined whether the patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) comorbidity may represent a distinct form of BD. The subjects diagnosed with BD (n=48), OCD (n=61), and BD with OCD (n=32) were compared in terms of several socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. Previous history of suicidal attempts was more likely to be higher in BD-OCD group compared to the other two groups. A more episodic course of OCD, higher rates of rapid cycling, and the seasonality were found in BD-OCD patients. The frequency of bipolar II and NOS subtypes was more prevalent in patients with BD-OCD than in OCD patients. The first diagnosed illness was BD in the majority of BD-OCD cases. It was found that first affective episode was major depression in half of BD-OCD patients. Age at onset of BD was found to be earlier in BD-OCD group compared to pure BD patients. Bipolarity may not have a specific effect on the phenomenology of OC symptoms. The episodic course of OCD, seasonality, rapid cycling, earlier onset of BD, and impulsivity in BD-OCD patients may be indicative for a distinct form of BD.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of schizophrenia is multifactorial, with antipsychotic medications comprising a major part of treatment. Paliperidone is a newly commercialized antipsychotic whose formulation includes the principal active metabolite risperidone, 9-hydroxyrisperidone. Ever since the relationship between schizophrenia and oxidative stress was first demonstrated, many studies have been conducted in order to probe the potential protective effects of antipsychotic drugs on the oxidant-antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation. The basic aim of this study is to determine the effects of the newly marketed drug paliperidone on the activities of the enzymes adenosine deaminase (ADA), xanthine oxidase (XO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as well as on malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in rat brain tissues. METHODS: Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the study, which were divided into two equal groups. The first was the control group (n = 10) and the second was the paliperidone group (n = 10). Saline was administered once daily for 14 days in the control group. In the paliperidone group, paliperidone was administered once daily with a dose of 1 mg/kg for 14 days. All rats were sacrificed at the end of the fourteenth day. Brain samples were collected and then analyzed. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that paliperidone significantly decreased the activities of ADA (P = 0.015), XO (P = 0.0001), and CAT (P = 0.004) while insignificantly increasing the activity of SOD (P = 0.49), MDA (P = 0.71), and NO (P = 0.26) levels in rat brain tissues. In addition, paliperidone insignificantly decreased the activity of GSH-Px (P = 0.30) compared to the control group in rat brain tissues. DISCUSSION: In conclusion, the data obtained in this study suggest that paliperidone can positively alter antioxidant status and, accordingly, can offer positive outcomes in the treatment of schizophrenia by reducing activity in the enzymes ADA and XO, which are associated with purine metabolism. We believe that such a comprehensive approach used with other antipsychotic drugs warrants further study.

ABSTRACT

Oxidative stress is a critical route of damage in various physiological stress-induced disorders, including depression. Rose oil may be a useful treatment for depression because it contains flavonoids which include free radical antioxidant compounds such as rutin and quercetin. We investigated the effects of absolute rose oil (from Rosa × damascena Mill.) and experimental depression on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant levels in the cerebral cortex of rats. Thirty-two male rats were randomly divided into four groups. The first group was used as control, while depression was induced in the second group using chronic mild stress (CMS). Oral (1.5 ml/kg) and vapor (0.15 ml/kg) rose oil were given for 28 days to CMS depression-induced rats, constituting the third and fourth groups, respectively. The sucrose preference test was used weekly to identify depression-like phenotypes during the experiment. At the end of the experiment, cerebral cortex samples were taken from all groups. The lipid peroxidation levels in the cerebral cortex in the CMS group were higher than in control whereas their levels were decreased by rose oil vapor exposure. The vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C and ß-carotene concentrations in the cerebral cortex were lower in the CMS group than in the control group whereas their concentrations were higher in the rose oil vapor plus CMS group. The CMS-induced antioxidant vitamin changes were not modulated by oral treatment. Glutathione peroxidase activity and reduced glutathione did not change statistically in the four groups following CMS or either treatment. In conclusion, experimental depression is associated with elevated oxidative stress while treatment with rose oil vapor induced protective effects on oxidative stress in depression.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on nine 3-5-year-old rams of different species: four Norduz, two Karakas, and three Ile de France × Akkaraman rams. Sperm of each ram was collected by means of an artificial vagina once per month from June to October 2007. In each case, the sperm volume, pH, viscosity, mass activity, motility, concentration, abnormal spermatozoa ratio, and the sperm death/live ratio were recorder along with the animals' testis diameter and scrotum circumferences. The concentrations of calcium, potassium, copper, magnesium, iron, and zinc levels in seminal plasma were determined. There were changes in the measured parameters according to genotype and time of sampling, which can be useful for better planning of anestrous mating programs for these ram species.

ABSTRACT

Thermal behaviors of wheat straw flour (WF) filled thermoplastic compositeswere measured applying the thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanningcalorimetry. Morphology and mechanical properties were also studied using scanningelectron microscope and universal testing machine, respectively. Presence of WF inthermoplastic matrix reduced the degradation temperature of the composites. One for WFand one for thermoplastics, two main decomposition peaks were observed. Morphologicalstudy showed that addition of coupling agent improved the compatibility between WFs andthermoplastic. WFs were embedded into the thermoplastic matrix indicating improvedadhesion. However, the bonding was not perfect because some debonding can also be seenon the interface of WFs and thermoplastic matrix. In the case of mechanical properties ofWF filled recycled thermoplastic, HDPE and PP based composites provided similar tensileand flexural properties. The addition of coupling agents improved the properties ofthermoplastic composites. MAPE coupling agents performed better in HDPE while MAPPcoupling agents were superior in PP based composites. The composites produced with thecombination of 50-percent mixture of recycled HDPE and PP performed similar with theuse of both coupling agents. All produced composites provided flexural properties requiredby the ASTM standard for polyolefin-based plastic lumber decking boards.
