ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Interventions trying to prevent violence from clients towards employees tend to show limited effect on the risk or the frequencies of violent episodes, possibly due to a too-narrow focus on only one or a few preventive strategies. This study aimed to show what employees and line managers identify as key intervention areas for preventing violence and threats. METHODS: The study is based on data collected during a participatory intervention study aiming to improve violence prevention in Danish psychiatric units and prison and detention centers. In the intervention study, employees and line managers from 13 work units developed 293 suggestions and 92 action plans to prevent workplace violence. Through qualitative thematic analysis of the suggestions and action plans, we identified the main categories that work units viewed as important and realistic to work with to improve violence prevention. RESULTS: We identified 12 topics of violence prevention that work units considered relevant. Action plan topics used by more than half of the work units included: specific approaches to violence prevention (e.g., de-escalating techniques), communication between employees to transfer knowledge between shifts, and introduction to new employees and temporary workers. Topics used by three to five work units were: interdisciplinary corporation, communication and relational work, uniform approaches, organization of work, and staffing. Topics used rarely were: definition of violence and threats, policy and guidelines, support from colleagues and management, and engagement in violence prevention. For nine of the 12 topics, action plans were developed in both high-risk sectors. CONCLUSIONS: The violence prevention action plans developed by work units from two high-risk sectors indicate that workplaces estimate the prevention of client-induced workplace violence to require activities on many levels and cannot be solved by a single focused approach. This variety of preventive activities needs to be considered when designing violence prevention interventions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess interactions between combinations of quantitative demands, emotional demands, unclear and contradictory demands, and violence/threats of violence in the prospective association with risk of long-term sickness absence (LTSA). METHODS: We included 55 467 employees from the 2012, 2014 and 2016 waves of the Work Environment and Health in Denmark (WEHD) survey. We measured the four independent variables in the WEHD survey and assessed risk of LTSA in a national register during 12 months of follow-up. Using Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for age, sex, educational attainment and job group, we estimated risk of LTSA and assessed deviation from additivity using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI). RESULTS: For combinations of high emotional demands and high quantitative demands (HR 1.50; 95% CI 1.33 to 1.70; RERI 0.06; 95% CI -0.15 o 0.26) and high emotional demands and violence/threats of violence (HR 1.76; 95% CI 1.53 to 2.02; RERI 0.12; 95% CI -0.43 to 0.66) we found no indications of deviations from additive effects in predicting LTSA. For combinations of violence/threats of violence and high quantitative demands (HR 1.90; 95% CI 1.64 to 2.20; RERI 0.36; 95% CI 0.01 to 0.71) and unclear and contradictory demands and high quantitative demands (HR 1.46; 95% CI 1.31 to 1.62; RERI 0.23; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.42) the results indicated an excess risk of LTSA above additivity (ie, superadditivity). CONCLUSIONS: Participants reporting high quantitative demands combined with either violence/threats of violence or unclear and contradictory demands showed a higher risk of LTSA than expected, indicating superadditivity. Results have implications for preventing negative health effects related to adverse psychosocial working conditions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: As smartphones become more widespread, software applications for occupational health, safety and well-being (OHS&W) at work are increasing. There is sparse knowledge about the available apps and the research evidence of their effects. This study aims to identify available smartphone applications designed to improve OHS&W at workplaces, and examine to what extent the apps are scientifically validated. METHODS: We searched the Danish App Store and Google Play for free OHS&W apps. Apps were included if they targeted OHS&W and were designed for workplace use. After categorizing the apps, we searched bibliographic databases to identify scientific studies on the 'intervention apps'. RESULTS: Altogether, 57 apps were included in the study; 19 apps were categorized as digital sources of information, 37 apps contained an intervention designed for workplace changes, and one app had too sparse information to be classified. Based on the publicly available information about the 37 intervention apps, only 13 had references to research. The bibliographic database search returned 531 publications, resulting in four relevant studies referring to four apps aimed at ergonomic measures, noise exposure, and well-being, which showed either limited effect or methodological limitations. CONCLUSION: There is no conceptual clarity about what can be categorized as an OHS&W app. Although some of the apps were developed based on scientific research, there is a need to evaluate the apps' effects in promoting OHS&W. The sparse documentation of evidence should be kept in mind when applying apps to improve OHS&W.

ABSTRACT

Due to aging populations and the prolonging of working lives, the number of senior workers will increase. Therefore, this study investigates the use of SOC strategies (Selection, Optimization, and Compensation) across organizational levels as a means for senior workers to maintain workability and age successfully at work. The need to expand the perspective of the SOC model beyond the individual level, when applied to a work context, has been emphasized theoretically in the literature, nevertheless, SOC strategies have so far only been examined at the individual level. This study is the first to explore SOC strategies at the organizational, leadership, and group level. We focus on senior employees and the SOC strategies they use to balance out demands and limited resources. Based on 23 semi-structured interviews with senior employees and immediate managers at two hospitals (nurses), and two dairies (skilled/unskilled workers), we explore which specific SOC strategies are used at each level and reflect on the applicability of broadening the perspective of the SOC model when applying it to a work context. Based on the empirical findings and the discussion of the empirical exploration of SOC strategies beyond the individual level, we argue that it is advantageous to further pursue this line of inquiry and include the group, leadership, and organizational level when applying the SOC model in a work setting.
