ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the integration of resilience in several psychological and medical studies underscores a need for resilience assessment measures with robust psychometric properties. This study aimed to evaluate the underlying structure of the French version of the Resilience Scale (RS-14), a widely used measure to assess resilience both in general and clinical population. METHOD: A sample of 2195 college students from France (18.68% of male; Mean age=20.09 years old (±1.21) completed the RS-14, the Child and Youth Resilience Measure, the Social Support Questionnaire and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. EFA with parallel analysis was conducted to assess the factorial structure of the RS-14 while CFA was performed to investigate the goodness-of-fit. Internal consistency, concurrent and convergent validity were evaluated. RESULTS: A one-dimensional-factorial-solution emerged from the EFA, its goodness-of-fit was adequate and it presented good internal consistency. As expected, the RS-14 score correlated positively to the CYRM and SSQ scores and negatively to the psychological distress score, supporting the validity of the scale. CONCLUSION: The one-dimensional-factor corroborates the initial and many languages versions of the RS-14. The results showed that the French version of the RS-14 presents adequate psychometric properties and that is a reliable and valid scale in evaluating resilience.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Devic neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or Devic's syndrome is an uncommon clinical syndrome associating unilateral or bilateral optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. Usually reported in adults, childhood cases constitute a distinctive clinical entity. CASE REPORT: We report a case of NMO occurring in a 9-year-old girl, admitted for paraplegia, sphincter troubles as acute installation bladder retention and of a sudden decline of the visual acuity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed abnormalities of spinal cord signal with hypo intensity in T1-weighted images and hyper intensity in T2-weighted images along the spinal cord. However, the cerebral region was normal. Visual evoked potentials were consistent with retrobulbar optic neuropathy. Our patient received corticosteroids (methyl prednisolone) during 5 days followed by oral prednisone. At week three, an immunosuppressant (azathioprine) was added. Clinical outcome was favourable with disappearance of sphincter troubles, a correction of the visual acuity and a progressive disappearance of motor troubles. CONCLUSION: Pediatric Devic's NMO is rare. It is a different clinical entity with an excellent visual and neurological prognosis. Review of the literature shows that recurrence is rare in children and seems to be without long-term sequelae with corticosteroids and immunosuppressant therapy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate two nosocomial outbreaks due to Salmonella Livingstone in a pediatric ward in Sfax hospital using molecular typing techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 84 strains of S. Livingstone isolated from patients hospitalized in a pediatric ward between November 1999 through August 2002 in addition to one environmental sample. Three epidemiological unrelated strains of S. Livingstone were also tested. The molecular typing techniques were: plasmid analysis, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC-PCR), random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). RESULTS: The plasmid analysis and the ERIC-PCR generated a similar profile for outbreak isolates including the environmental sample while the epidemiologically unrelated strains demonstrated distinct patterns. The RAPD-PCR applied on 20 strains showed three patterns but one profile was predominating. All the strains isolate of S. Livingstone, except the veterinary strain, could not be typed by PFGE. CONCLUSION: Using the molecular typing techniques, we showed that these two outbreaks in the pediatric ward were due to the clonal spread of a single strain of S. Livingstone. The identification of the source of contamination and the improvement of hygiene conditions are required.
