ABSTRACT

Water electrolysis plays an interesting role toward hydrogen generation for overcoming global environmental crisis and solving the energy storage problem. However, there is still a deficiency of efficient electrocatalysts to overcome sluggish kinetics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Great efforts have been employed to produce potential catalysts with low overpotential, rapid kinetics, and excellent stability for HER and OER. At present, hydrogen economy is driven by electrocatalysts with excellent characteristics; thus, systematic design strategy has become the driving force to exploit earth-abundant transition metal-based electrocatalysts toward H2 economy. In this review, the recent progress on newer materials including metals, alloys, and transition metal oxides (manganese oxides, cobalt oxides, nickel oxides, PBA-derived metal oxides, and metal complexes) as photocatalysts/electrocatalysts has been overviewed together with some methodologies for efficient water splitting. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysts have been highly exploited owing to their interesting functionalities. The photovoltaic-electrocatalytic (PV-EC) process focused on harvesting high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (STH) among various solar energy conversion as well as storage systems. Electrocatalysts/photocatalysts with high efficiency have become an urgent need for overall water splitting. Also, cutting-edge achievements in the fabrication of electrocatalysts along with theoretical consideration have been discussed.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the largest dengue outbreak in the state of Kerala, India in 2017, along with global evidence of changing epidemiology of dengue virus and its distribution, this study was planned to understand the epidemiological pattern of dengue infection and contemplate the clinical presentations of different serotypes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts of Kerala, India, spanning 3 y from 2017 to 2019. We recruited adult patients based on the World Health Organization case definition of probable dengue fever to study their virological, spatial and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: Dengue infection was identified in 113 (33.9%) of the 333 probable dengue patients recruited. Dengue virus 1 (DENV1), along with its combinations (59.09%), was the predominant serotype during 2017, followed by DENV2. There was a marked increase in the proportion of DENV4 cases (34.56%) and concurrent infections (26%) in 2019. DENV3 infections were more likely to present with warning signs (adjusted relative risk 6.14 [95% confidence interval 1.3 to 29.4]) and a significantly lower platelet count (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the hyperendemicity of dengue infection in the state and the changing pattern of dengue virus predominance along with redominance. The rise in DENV4 and concurrent infections put forth the possibility of a more severe future outbreak.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The poor maternal oral health in the pregnancy has an impact on the fetus through the oral-systemic link. Various studies have proven the relationship between poor maternal oral health and the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Hence, periodontal therapy becomes indispensable during pregnancy. Previous systematic reviews and meta-analysis conducted to assess the influence of periodontal therapy on the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes have shown inconsistent results. Hence, we conducted the present review to assess the influence of periodontal therapy on the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes including the studies published till date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched for the relevant studies using the databases PUBMED, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE on the randomized controlled trials evaluating the influence of periodontal treatment on adverse pregnancy outcomes from 2000 to 2018. Nineteen studies were considered for the present review based on the predetermined criteria. The risk of bias tool by Cochrane was used to evaluate the risk of bias among the studies. RESULTS: Among the studies included for the present review, the occurrence of preterm birth among the pregnant mothers who received periodontal therapy ranged from 0% to 53.5%, while in the control group, the range was 6.38%-72%. The rate of LBW among the mothers treated for periodontal disease ranged from 0% to 36%, and in the control group, it varied from 1.15% to 53.9%. CONCLUSION: With best possible evidence, it can be inferred that nonsurgical periodontal therapy is safe during pregnancy. Even though it does not completely avert the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes, it can be recommended as a part of antenatal care.

ABSTRACT

Two unknown impurities were detected in verapamil hydrochloride bulk drug using isocratic reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). These impurities were isolated by preparative HPLC. Spectral data for the isolated impurities were collected. Based on the spectral data derived from two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS), impurity-1 and impurity-2 were characterized as 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-methylbut-2-enenitrile and 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-isopropyl-3-methylbutanenitrile, respectively.

ABSTRACT

We describe a patient with an implanted pacemaker for impaired AV conduction who presented with an incessant tachycardia. EP study showed that the tachycardia was atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) with repeated spontaneous initiation because of poor or absent antegrade fast pathway conduction. Slow pathway ablation was successful in terminating the tachycardia and making it non-inducible.
