ABSTRACT

The immunocorrective effect of indomethacin in the course of chemoradiation treatment for inoperable lung cancer was established in a group of 117 patients. It manifested itself in an increase in T-lymphocyte level, normalization of their membrane structure and improvement in immunoregulatory function mainly due to a rise in T-helper/inductor level. Blood plasma-circulating immune complex concentration returned to normal. The concomitant administration of indomethacin during chemoradiation therapy improved subjective status of patients and tumor response but failed to increase survival.

ABSTRACT

Combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin and platinum was performed in 122 patients with stage III-IV squamous-cell cancer and adenocarcinoma of the lung. Control group included 84 cases of non-small-cell lung cancer treated with the same drugs except platinum. Ten patients with stage III disease received platinum-based combination chemotherapy and split-course radiotherapy in the total dose of 65-70 Gy. Complete or partial remission was obtained in 48.6 +/- 11.74% of stage III patients following three cycles of chemotherapy, with mean survival reaching 8.6 +/- 3.2 months. Survival in responders was 10.6 +/- 2.1 months. Chemoradiation treatment was associated with even higher survival (14.6 +/- 2.16 months). It is concluded that platinum be used in combination chemotherapy and chemoradiation treatment of the above categories of patients.

ABSTRACT

The influence of drugs improving sympathoadrenal system status on natural killer (NK) functional activity was studied in lung cancer patients. The activity of adenosine-metabolizing enzymes (adenosine deaminase and 5'-nucleotidase) in NK cells was found significantly altered, suggesting the involvement of this phenomenon in decreasing NK activity under tumor growth. Pharmacological correction of sympathoadrenal system status was followed by an increase in NK functional activity in lung cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

The paper discusses results of a cooperative study of effectiveness of hydrazine sulfate therapy in 740 patients with primary advanced, recurrent and metastatic solid tumors and malignant lymphomas who had failed all other treatment modalities. Both objective response and symptomatic effect were assessed. Objective response was observed in neuroblastoma, recurrent desmoid, Hodgkin's disease, lung cancer, fibrosarcoma and other tumors. Since hydrazine sulfate provided relief of a wide spectrum of cancer symptoms, it may be recommended for patients with end-stage cancer.

ABSTRACT

Immunoregulatory T-lymphocytes (T mu- and T gamma-lymphocytes) and circulating immune complexes were studied in inoperable patients with the stomach carcinoma of stages III-IV. It is established that the absolute number of T-lymphocytes, mainly of T-helpers/inductors increases after the administration of indomethacin and 5-fluorouracil with indomethacin. The T mu/T gamma-lymphocyte ratio increases and approaches the control values. The level of the circulating immune complexes tends to be normalized. The main effect of indomethacin is determined by the effect of T-lymphocytes on immunoregulatory subpopulations.

ABSTRACT

The results of radio- and chemoradiotherapy of 109 patients with pulmonary cancer after exploratory thoracotomy were studied. In these patients, the tumour invasion to the adjacent organs and vessels, involvement of the root of a lung and lymphatic mediastinal nodes, metastatic pleural lesion were revealed. As a result of the use of radio- and chemoradiotherapy, the tumour diminishing was documented in 48.8 and 53.2% of the cases, respectively. The adverse effects were cupped off in most patients by means of the symptomatic agents. A conclusion of the expediency to perform radio- and chemoradiotherapy in patients with pulmonary cancer after exploratory thoracotomy was made.

ABSTRACT

An automated IR-spectrophotometer-mini-computer system was designed for assay of steroid hormone level. Its application obviates a clinical analysis of urine. The ratio of 17-ketogenic steroids to androsterone was found to be significantly higher in patients with lung cancer than in healthy controls. The system may be used for identification of groups at high risk both during screenings and in oncological clinic.

ABSTRACT

A considerable disturbance in the ratio of the immunoregulatory T-lymphocyte subpopulations detected by receptors to Fc-fragment of IgM, IgG and by theophilline was revealed in 70 patients with inoperable lung cancer as well as a considerable increase in the blocking circulating immunocomplexes (CIC) in blood serum of these patients. A single dose of indometacin (100 mg/kg) led to the reduction of immunoregulatory disbalance 3 hours after injection and to a decrease in the blocking CIC in blood serum. These data permit recommending the use of indometacin in the treatment of inoperable lung cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

Immunologic vigor and the efficacy of combined treatment (short- and long-term courses of levamisole + chemoradiotherapy) were assessed in 195 cases of inoperable epidermoid cancer of the lung. In some cases, lymphocyte response to levamisole in vitro incubation was studied in a reaction of spontaneous rosette formation with ovine erythrocytes prior to therapy. Shorter courses of levamisole used in combination with chemoradiotherapy were followed, on the average, by a 4 months longer survival. The results obtained make the case for studying lymphocyte response to levamisole in vitro in a reaction of spontaneous rosette formation as a criterion for its administration for lung cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

A mathematical analysis of immunologic indexes was carried out in patients with inoperable stomach cancer. Some of these indexes were identified as the most important for prognosis in patients treated with 5-fluorouracil and levamisole.

ABSTRACT

Excretion of polyamines (spermine, spermidine and putrescine) with the urine was studied in patients with carcinoma of the stomach of the III-IV stage after intravenous injection of 5-fluorouracil and indomethacin. A 40% increase of the polyamine level in the urine was observed at the beginning and towards the end of drug infusion course as well as a decrease of these indices at the top point of chemotherapy and towards the end of it. It is emphasized that an increase of the polyamine amount following the separate use of 5-fluorouracil is less expressed than following combined use of 5-fluorouracil and indomethacin.
