ABSTRACT

We report the design and performance of a cryogen-free, pulse-tube refrigerator (PTR)-based scanning probe microscopy (SPM) system capable of operating at a base temperature of near 5 K. We achieve this by combining a home-made interface design between the PTR cold head and the SPM head, with an automatic gas-handling system. The interface design isolates the PTR vibrations by a combination of polytetrafluoroethylene and stainless-steel bellows and by placing the SPM head on a passive vibration isolation table via two cold stages that are connected to thermal radiation shields using copper heat links. The gas-handling system regulates the helium heat-exchange gas pressures, facilitating both the cooldown to and maintenance of the base temperature. We discuss the effects of each component using measured vibration, current-noise, temperature, and pressure data. We demonstrate that our SPM system performance is comparable to known liquid-helium-based systems with the measurements of the superconducting gap spectrum of Pb, atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy image and quasiparticle interference pattern of Au(111) surface, and non-contact atomic force microscopy image of NaCl(100) surface. Without the need for cryogen refills, the present SPM system enables uninterrupted low-temperature measurements.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: S-1 is an oral anticancer drug composed of tegafur (FT), which is a prodrug of 5-FU, 5-chloro-2,4-dihydroxypyridine (CDHP), and potassium oxonate. Recently, some studies have been reported on watering eyes caused by S-1. However, the mechanism of watering eyes caused by S-1 is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between tears and plasma concentrations of FT, 5-FU, and CDHP, which are components and active modulator of S-1. METHODS: We prospectively investigated the pharmacokinetics (PK) of FT, 5-FU, and CDHP in plasma and in tears of gastric cancer patients who were treated with S-1 monotherapy at the dose of 80 mg/m2/day. Plasma and tears from both eyes were obtained 1, 2, 4, and 8 h after S-1 administration on day 1 and 14 of the first cycle. RESULTS: Total of eight patients were enrolled. All the FT, 5-FU and CDHP were detected both in plasma and in tears, and their PK parameters were measured. There was a positive correlation between the concentrations of FT, 5-FU and CDHP in the plasma and those in the tears on day 1 and day 14 (correlation coefficients r, right eye/left eye: r = 0.882/0.878, 0.877/0.890, and 0.885/0.878, respectively). CONCLUSION: There was a positive correlation between the concentrations of FT, 5-FU and CDHP in the plasma and those in the tears. The result is expected to facilitate the further investigation into the causes of watering eyes and the establishment of the effective methods for the prevention and the treatment.

ABSTRACT

Physical activity (PA) is recommended to both promote and maintain health and prevent cancer by improving the body's DNA repair system, which is considered a mechanism of cancer prevention. However, associations between PA and urinary levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG), which reflects DNA damage, are unclear. This cross-sectional study included 2370 men and 4052 women aged 45-74 years enrolled between 2010 and 2012. Habitual PA was assessed by single-axis accelerometer and urinary 8-OH-dG levels by automated HPLC. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between log-transformed urinary 8-OH-dG and total PA (TPA) and PA of moderate/vigorous intensity (MVPA; ≥3 metabolic equivalents), with adjustment for age, body mass index, energy intake, alcohol consumption, smoking status, daily coffee drinking, menopause status (in women), and TPA (for MVPA). On multivariate adjustment, urinary 8-OH-dG levels were inversely correlated with TPA (ß = -0.020, P < 0.01) in women, and this correlation was not changed by PA intensity. Conversely, urinary 8-OH-dG levels were inversely correlated with MVPA (ß = -0.022, P < 0.05) in men, although the correlation with TPA was non-significant. This inverse correlation was clearer in current smokers than in never or former smokers, although the interaction between smoking status and MVPA on urinary 8-OH-dG levels was non-significant. In conclusion, greater TPA in women and greater MVPA in men were correlated with reduction in urinary 8-OH-dG, suggesting sex-specific effects of MVPA and TPA on protection from oxidative DNA damage. Increasing PA may mediate reduction in oxidative stress.

In the absence of any catalysts, ortho-alkynylanilines react with aldehydes and amines in HFIP to form trans-2,3-disubstituted 2,3-dihydro-4-iminoquinolines in a complete trans-selective manner via the three-component alkyne-imine metathesis.

SbF5-MeOH catalytic system efficiently promotes the alkyne-carbonyl metathesis of o-alkynylaniline derivatives and aldehydes to afford 2,3-disubstituted dihydroquinolinones in moderate to high yields with high trans-selectivity.

ABSTRACT

We report an ultrafast cross phase modulation (XPM) effect in intersubband transition (ISBT) of InGaAs/AlAs/AlAsSb coupled quantum wells, where the ISBT absorption of a transverse-magnetic mode pump signal induces phase modulation of a transverse-electric mode probe signal. Using waveguide-type ISBT devices, we have achieved XPM-based 10 Gbit/s wavelength conversion with a power penalty of 2.53 dB. Also, we propose XPM-based signal processing circuits for gate switching and modulation format conversion.

ABSTRACT

An organic-inorganic hybrid support has been synthesized by covalently anchoring an N-octyldihydroimidazolium cation fragment onto SiO2 (denoted as 1-SiO2). This modified support was characterized by solid-state 13C, 29Si, and 31P NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The results showed that the structure of the dihydroimidazolium skeleton is preserved on the surface of SiO2. The modified support can act as a good anion exchanger, which allows the catalytically active polyoxometalate anion [gamma-1,2-H2SiV2W10O40]4- (I) to be immobilized onto the support by a stoichiometric anion exchange (denoted as I/1-SiO2). The structure of anion I is preserved after the anion exchange, as confirmed by IR and 51V NMR spectroscopy. The catalytic performance for the oxidation of olefins and sulfides, with hydrogen peroxide (only one equivalent with respect to substrate) as the sole oxidant, was investigated with I/1-SiO2. This supported catalyst shows a high stereospecificity, diastereoselectivity, regioselectivity, and a high efficiency of hydrogen peroxide utilization for the oxidation of various olefins and sulfides without any loss of the intrinsic catalytic nature of the corresponding homogeneous analogue of I (i.e., the tetra-n-butylammonium salt of I, TBA-I), although the rates decreased to about half that with TBA-I. The oxidation can be stopped immediately by removal of the solid catalyst, and vanadium and tungsten species can hardly be found in the filtrate after removal of the catalyst. These results rule out any contribution to the observed catalysis from vanadium and tungsten species that leach into the reaction solution, which means that the observed catalysis is truly heterogeneous in nature. In addition, the catalyst is reusable for both epoxidation and sulfoxidation without any loss of catalytic performance.

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text] Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 efficiently catalyzes the heterogeneous aerobic oxygenation or oxidative dehydrogenation of alkylarenes to give the corresponding oxygenated or dehydrogenated products. Catalyst/product separation is very easy, and the recovered catalyst is reusable with retention of the high catalytic performance.
