ABSTRACT

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the larynx is a rare benign lesion that commonly occurs in the soft tissues. We present the first case with systemic manifestations of laryngeal IMT that was associated with hypochromic, microcytic-type anemia and thrombocytosis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The article's aim was to investigate the effects of probiotics in the experimental otitis media with effusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats were used. They were divided into four groups. Experimental otitis media with effusion was created by intratympanic histamine injection. The effusion was confirmed by otomicroscopic examination 24 h after injection. Group 1; did not receive any treatment, group 2; received probiotics for 7 days after the detection of effusion, group 3; received probiotics for 7 days prior to injection of histamine, group 4; received probiotics for 7 days before injection of histamine and 7 days after detection of effusion. After detection of effusion, animals were sacrificed. Otomicroscopic evaluation was done to determine the effusion. In histopathological examination neutrophil leukocyte counts were determined in 25 areas of the sub-mucosa of the temporal bulla. RESULTS: The otomicroscopic ear effusions' healing rate in group 1 was 10%, in group 2 was 25%, in group 3 was 50%, and in group 4 was 100% (p < 0,013). The mean counts of submucosal neutrophil leukocyte from 25 areas of the temporal bulla of group 1 was 86,8 ± 24, group 2 was 66,5 ± 21, group 3 was 66,2 ± 16, and group 4 was 26,3 ± 6,5 (p < 0,001). CONCLUSION: Probiotics have a curative effect on the prevention and treatment of otitis media with effusion. This result may be related to their anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, probiotics can be widely used in the age group at risk for otitis media with effusion as a complementary therapy by dietary supplements. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NA.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Adenoidectomy can be performed with many ways, including curettage and microdebrider endoscopic-assisted adenoidectomy. Those two techniques have advantages and disadvantages. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to research the effects of curettage adenoidectomy and endoscopic-assisted microdebrider adenoidectomy on the tympanum pressures in pediatric patients with adenoid hypertrophy without otitis media with effusion. METHODS: This prospective descriptive study was performed with 65 patients who had a normal tympanic membrane and normal tympanogram and then underwent adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy for adenoid and tonsil hypertrophy. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: curettage adenoidectomy group and endoscopic microdebrider-assisted adenoidectomy group. They underwent tympanometry, and the preoperative as well as 1st and 7th day postoperative values of the tympanum pressures were compared within and among the groups. RESULTS: There were 32 patients in the curettage adenoidectomy group and 33 patients in the microdebrider adenoidectomy group. Statistically significant differences were observed in the median tympanum pressure on the preoperative and 1st and 7th postoperative days for both the left and right ears with curettage adenoidectomy (p<0.001, p<0.001). This difference occurred on the 1st postoperative day, and the value returned to normal on the 7th day. There was no significant difference in the median tympanum pressure on the preoperative and 1st and 7th postoperative days for both the left and right ears in the microdebrider adenoidectomy group (p=0.376, p=0.128). CONCLUSION: Postoperative Eustachian tube dysfunction is seen less often with the endoscopic-assisted microdebrider adenoidectomy technique than with the conventional adenoidectomy technique.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Concha bullosa (CB), which is pneumatization of the concha, is one of the most commonly seen anatomic variations of the lateral nasal wall. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects on olfactory function of lateral turbinectomy and crushing methods used in the surgical treatment of CB. METHODS: The study included a total of 47 patients operated on for a diagnosis of CB and nasal septum deviation. The patients comprised 22 females and 25 males, with bilateral CB in 18 cases and unilateral in 29 cases. Intervention was made to a total of 65 CB. The cases were separated as those applied with septoplasty and lateral turbinectomy in group 1 (n = 34) and those applied with the septoplasty and crushing method in group 2 (n = 31). The olfactory function of the patients was evaluated preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively with the Brief Smell Identification Test. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase was determined in the postoperative smell test results compared with the preoperative values in both group 1 (P = .021) and group 2 (P = .001). When the change in the smell test results from preoperative to postoperative was compared between the groups, the increase in group 2 was determined to be statistically significantly greater (P = .002). CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that the crushing method in surgical treatment of CB increased olfactory functions more than the lateral resection method, and as the improvement in olfactory functions was greater, this demonstrated that only increasing the nasal cavity is not sufficient and the nasal mucosa should be protected as far as possible.

ABSTRACT

In this clinical report, 3 cases, admitted to the ears, nose, throat outpatient clinic with the complaints of unilateral swelling in the parotid region and facial asymmetry, are presented. In the etiology, contralateral parotid gland aplasia with compensatory hypertrophy and sialosis was detected. With this rare condition, clinical and radiological features of this anomaly are discussed.
