ABSTRACT

This paper demonstrates that ash composites, comprising fly ash and polyurethane, can be used to develop value-added products that exhibit an effective decrease in the leaching of coal ash inorganics to less than one-third of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s maximum contaminant level (MCL) when soaked in a water circulation system for 14 months. Furthermore, the composite blocks remain safe even with ruptured surfaces. The concept of encapsulating fly ash within ash composites by using a polar polymer to bind the fine inorganic particles, mimicking how nature does it in the original unburned coal, ensures the safety of the composite. The ash composites can be formulated to have designed mechanical, fire, and electrical properties by controlling the formulation and the density. The properties of typical density composites were produced, measured, and compared with commercial materials. This paper also demonstrates that ash composite technology can be extended to coal ash stored in ponds. Finally, a typical electric utility box cover was designed, fabricated, and test validated. The box cover has less than one-half the weight of the original box cover for the same design limits. Finally, the benefits of this ash-composite technology for product manufacturers, society, and ash producers are summarized.

ABSTRACT

Cholecystectomy is one of the most performed surgical procedures. The safety of this surgery notwithstanding, the sheer volume of operations results in a notable incidence of post-cholecystectomy complications. Early and accurate diagnosis of such complications is essential for timely and effective management. Imaging techniques are critical for this purpose, aiding in distinguishing between expected postsurgical changes and true complications. This review highlights current knowledge on the indications for cholecystectomy, pertinent surgical anatomy and surgical technique, and the recognition of anatomical variants that may complicate surgery. The article also outlines the roles of various imaging modalities in identifying complications, the spectrum of possible postsurgical anatomical changes, and the implications of such findings. Furthermore, we explore the array of complications that can arise post-cholecystectomy, such as biliary system injuries, gallstone-related issues, vascular complications, and the formation of postsurgical collections. Radiologists should be adept at identifying normal and abnormal postoperative findings to guide patient management effectively.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Despite the growing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in cancer treatment, data regarding ICI-associated pericardial disease are primarily derived from case reports and case series. ICI related pericardial disease can be difficult to diagnose and is associated with significant morbidity. We conducted a systematic review to further characterize the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and outcomes of this patient population. METHODS: A search of four databases resulted in 31 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Patients > 18 years old who presented with ICI mediated pericardial disease were included. Intervention was medical + surgical therapy and outcomes were development of cardiac tamponade, morbidity, and mortality. RESULTS: Thirty- eight patients across 31 cases were included. Patients were majority male (72%) with a median age of 63. Common symptoms included dyspnea (59%) and chest pain (32%), with 41% presenting with cardiac tamponade. Lung cancer (81%) was the most prevalent, and nivolumab (61%) and pembrolizumab (34%) were the most used ICIs. Pericardiocentesis was performed in 68% of patients, and 92% experienced symptom improvement upon ICI cessation. Overall mortality was 16%. DISCUSSION: This study provides the most comprehensive analysis of ICI-mediated pericardial disease to date. Patients affected were most commonly male with lung cancer treated with either Nivolumab or Pembrolizumab. Diagnosis may be challenging in the setting of occult presentation with normal EKG and physical exam as well as delayed onset from therapy initiation. ICI-associated pericardial disease demonstrates high morbidity and mortality, as evidenced by a majority of patients requiring pericardiocentesis.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound can overcome barriers to visualizing the internal jugular vein, allowing hepato-jugular reflux and jugular venous pressure measurement. We aimed to determine operating characteristics of the ultrasound hepato-jugular reflux and ultrasound jugular venous pressure predicting right atrial and pulmonary capillary occlusion pressures. METHODS: In a prospective observational cohort at three US academic hospitals the hepato-jugular reflux and jugular venous pressure were measured with ultrasound before right heart catheterization. Receiver operating curves, likelihood ratios, and regression models were utilized to compare the ultrasound hepato-jugular reflux and ultrasound jugular venous pressure to the right atrial and pulmonary capillary occlusion pressures. RESULTS: In 99 adults undergoing right heart catheterization, an ultrasound hepato-jugular reflux had a negative likelihood ratio of 0.4 if 0 cm and a positive likelihood ratio of 4.3 if ≥ 1.5 cm for predicting a pulmonary capillary occlusion pressure ≥ 15 mmHg. Regression modeling predicting pulmonary capillary occlusion pressure was not only improved by including the ultrasound hepato-jugular reflux (P < .001), it was the more impactful predictor compared with the ultrasound jugular venous pressure (adjusted odds ratio 2.6 vs 1.2). The ultrasound hepato-jugular reflux showed substantial agreement (kappa 0.76; 95% confidence interval, 0.30-1.21), with poor agreement for the ultrasound jugular venous pressure (kappa 0.11; 95% confidence interval, -0.37-0.58). CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing right heart catheterization, the ultrasound hepato-jugular reflux is reproducible, has modest impact on the probability of a normal pulmonary capillary occlusion pressure when 0 cm, and more substantial impact on the probability of an elevated pulmonary capillary occlusion pressure when ≥ 1.5 cm.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Studies of neurosurgical pediatric patients associate treatment at low-volume hospitals and by low-volume surgeons with increased odds of adverse outcomes. Although these associations suggest that increased centralization of care could be considered, we evaluate whether confounding endogenous factors mitigate against the proposed outcome benefits. METHODS: Literature review of English language articles from 1999 to 2021. We included articles that assessed volume-outcome effects in pediatric neurosurgical patients. RESULTS: Twelve papers were included from 1999 to 2021. Primary outcomes included mortality (9), length of stay (LOS) (6), complications (4), and shunt revision/failure rates (3). Volume was measured at the hospital level (8) and at the surgeon level (6). Four papers found that higher volume hospitals had lower odds of mortality. Two papers found that hospitals with higher volume had fewer complications. Two papers found that higher volume surgeons had decreased mortality (odds ratio [OR] 0.09-0.3). One paper found that high-volume surgeons had fewer complications (-2.4%; P = 0.006). After controlling for hospital factors (HF), two out of 7 analyses remained significant. Five analyses did not control for HF. CONCLUSIONS: The literature consistently demonstrates a relationship between higher hospital and surgeon volume and better outcomes for pediatric neurosurgical patients. Of the 7 articles that assessed HF, only 2 analyses found that surgical volume remained associated with better outcomes. No reports assessed the degree of centralization already present. The call for centralization of pediatric care should be tempered until variables such as hospital factors, distribution of cases, and clinical thresholds can be defined and studied.

ABSTRACT

Organic-inorganic perovskite halides (OIPH) have emerged as a wonder material with growing interest in sensors detecting various toxic gases. However, lead toxicity represents a potential obstacle, and therefore finding lead-free cost-effective compatible materials for gas sensing applications is essential. In this work, methylammonium bismuth iodide i.e. (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9(MABI) perovskite thin films-based ammonia (NH3) sensor was synthesized using an antisolvent-assisted one-step spin coating method. The MABI sensor shows a linear relationship between the responsivity and concentration of NH3with excellent reversibility, high gas responsivity, and humidity stability. The MABI thin-film sensor exhibits a maximum gas response of 24%, a short response/recovery time i.e. 0.14 s /8.15 s and good reversibility at 6 ppm of NH3. It was observed that MABI thin films based sensors have excellent ambient stability over a couple of months. This work reveals that it is feasible to design high-performance gas sensors based on environmentally-friendly Bi-based OIPH materials.

ABSTRACT

Fo subcomplex of ATP synthase is a membrane-embedded rotary motor that converts proton motive force into mechanical energy. Despite a rapid increase in the number of high-resolution structures, the mechanism of tight coupling between proton transport and motion of the rotary c-ring remains elusive. Here, using extensive all-atom free energy simulations, we show how the motor's directionality naturally arises from the interplay between intraprotein interactions and energetics of protonation of the c-ring. Notably, our calculations reveal that the strictly conserved arginine in the a-subunit (R176) serves as a jack-of-all-trades: it dictates the direction of rotation, controls the protonation state of the proton-release site, and separates the two proton-access half-channels. Therefore, arginine is necessary to avoid slippage between the proton flux and the mechanical output and guarantees highly efficient energy conversion. We also provide mechanistic explanations for the reported defective mutations of R176, reconciling the structural information on the Fo motor with previous functional and single-molecule data.

ABSTRACT

Seagrasses are globally recognized for their contribution to blue carbon sequestration. However, accurate quantification of their carbon storage capacity remains uncertain due, in part, to an incomplete inventory of global seagrass extent and assessment of its temporal variability. Furthermore, seagrasses are undergoing significant decline globally, which highlights the urgent need to develop change detection techniques applicable to both the scale of loss and the spatial complexity of coastal environments. This study applied a deep learning algorithmto a 30-year time series of Landsat 5 through 8 imagery to quantify seagrass extent, leaf area index (LAI), and belowground organic carbon (BGC) in St. Joseph Bay, Florida, between 1990 and 2020. Consistent with previous field-based observations regarding stability of seagrass extent throughout St. Joseph Bay, there was no temporal trend in seagrass extent (23 ± 3 km2, τ = 0.09, p = 0.59, n = 31), LAI (1.6 ± 0.2, τ = -0.13, p = 0.42, n = 31), or BGC (165 ± 19 g C m-2, τ = - 0.01, p = 0.1, n = 31) over the 30-year study period. There were, however, six brief declines in seagrass extent between the years 2004 and 2019 following tropical cyclones, from which seagrasses recovered rapidly. Fine-scale interannual variability in seagrass extent, LAI, and BGC was unrelated to sea surface temperature or to climate variability associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation or the North Atlantic Oscillation. Although our temporal assessment showed that seagrass and its belowground carbon were stable in St. Joseph Bay from 1990 to 2020, forecasts suggest that environmental and climate pressures are ongoing, which highlights the importance of the method and time series presented here as a valuable tool to quantify decadal-scale variability in seagrass dynamics. Perhaps more importantly, our results can serve as a baseline against which we can monitor future change in seagrass communities and their blue carbon.

ABSTRACT

As social and interdependent beings, we have responsibilities to each other. One of them is to recognize each other appropriately. When we fail to meet this responsibility, we often stigmatize. In this paper, I argue that the COVID-19-related stigmatization is a variation of the lack of recognition understood as an orientation to our evaluative features. Various stereotypical behaviors regarding COVID-19 become stigmatized practices because of labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss and discrimination, and power. When people stigmatize COVID-19 victims, they orient themselves to their evaluative quality of being vulnerable to the SARS-CoV-2 virus by internalizing the victims as dangerous, understanding them as separable, and being motivated to act with them differently. All this causes the COVID-19 victims to lose status and suffer discrimination for which they do not experience participatory parity in different facets of their lives, rendering the COVID-19-related stigmatization an appalling example of misrecognition.

ABSTRACT

Elevated oxidative stress and hormonal imbalance have been suggested to associate with polycystic ovarian syndromes (PCOS), a causal factor for unsuccessful pregnancy outcomes and other associated complications in women. The aim of this study was to compare the oxidative stress markers and different relevant hormones between pregnant women with and without PCOS. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), insulin, follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), vitamin A and vitamin C were measured in 80 pregnant women with PCOS and 80 healthy pregnancies. The mean MDA and insulin levels were significantly elevated in pregnant women with PCOS compared to healthy controls (1.98±0.07 vs. 1.06±0.02 nmol/mL and 11.15±0.25 vs. 6.67±0.25 mIU/L, respectively with p<0.001 for both). Compared to healthy controls, the mean concentrations of FSH (3.65±0.16 vs. 1.75±0.10 IU/L) and LH (15.67±0.63 vs. 3.65±0.16 IU/L) were significantly higher in pregnant women with PCOS, p<0.001 for both comparisons. Similarly, the concentration of serum TSH was also higher in PCOS cases compared to controls (2.79±0.22 vs. 2.34±0.06, p=0.048). In contrast, the levels of vitamin A and C were lower in PCOS cases compared to healthy pregnancy group, 0.45±0.01 vs. 1.05±0.01 and 0.26±0.01 vs. 0.53±0.02, respectively with p-values <0.001 for both comparations. In conclusion, in PCOS cases, serum MDA, insulin, FSH, LH and TSH levels were found to be elevated while the levels of antioxidant vitamins were lower compared to healthy pregnant women. Unusual hormonal imbalance and increase of oxidative stress markers during the pregnancy might be important to establish the PCOS diagnosis.

Prevalence of tan spot of wheat caused by the fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis has become more prevalent in Oklahoma as no-till cultivation in wheat has increased. Hence, developing wheat varieties resistant to tan spot has been emphasized, and selecting pathogen isolates to screen for resistance to this disease is critical. Twelve isolates of P. tritici-repentis were used to inoculate 11 wheat cultivars in a greenhouse study in splitplot experiments. Virulence of isolates and cultivar resistance were measured in percent leaf area infection for all possible isolate x cultivar interactions. Isolates differed significantly (P < 0.01) in virulence on wheat cultivars, and cultivars differed significantly in disease reaction to isolates. Increased virulence of isolates detected increased variability in cultivar response (percent leaf area infection) (r = 0.56, P < 0.05) while increased susceptibility in cultivars detected increased variance in virulence of the isolates (r = 0.76, P < 0.01). A significant isolate × cultivar interaction indicated specificity between isolates and cultivars, however, cluster analysis indicated low to moderate physiological specialization. Similarity in wheat cultivars in response to pathogen isolates also was determined by cluster analysis. The use of diverse isolates of the fungus would facilitate evaluation of resistance in wheat cultivars to tan spot.

BACKGROUND: In the conventional management of the morbidly obese that normalizes the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), CO2 levels often remain elevated. METHODS: A retrospective review of morbidly obese patients using volume preset settings up to 1800ml to positive inspiratory pressures (PIPs) of 25-55cm H2O, or pressure control at 25-50cm H2O pressure via noninvasive interfaces up to continuously (CNVS). RESULTS: Twenty-six patients, mean 55.6±14.8 years of age, weight 108-229kg, mean BMI 56.1 (35.5-77)kg/m2, mean AHI 69.0±24.9, depended on up to CNVS for 3 weeks to up to 66 years. There were eleven extubations and seven decannulations to CNVS despite failure to pass spontaneous breathing trials. Thirteen were CNVS dependent for 92.2 patient-years with little to no ventilator free breathing ability (VFBA). Six used NVS from 10 to 23h a day, and others only for sleep. Fifteen patients with cough peak flows (CPF) less than 270L/m had access to mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MIE) in the peri-extubation/decannulation period and long-term. The daytime end-tidal (Et)CO2 of 14 who were placed on sleep NVS without extubation or decannulation to it decreased from mean EtCO2 61.0±9.3-38.5±3.6mm Hg and AHI normalized to 2.2. Blood gas levels were normal while using NVS/CNVS. Pre-intubation PaCO2 levels, when measured, were as high as 183mm Hg before extubation to CNVS. CONCLUSIONS: Ventilator unweanable morbidly obese patients can be safely extubated/decannulated and maintained indefinitely using up to CNVS rather than resort to tracheotomies.

ABSTRACT

The conserved GxGxxG motif of protein kinases forms a beta turn at the tip of the flexible glycine-rich loop and creates much of the ATP pocket binding surface. Notable exceptions to this sequence include GGGxxG in ABL kinase and GxGxxA in protein kinase C isoforms. We constructed the corresponding mutants of PKA, T51G, and G55A, and tested quinazoline inhibitors that were designed to bind via glycine-rich loop interactions, testing also staurosporine for comparison. The quinazoline inhibitors have significantly reduced binding strengths in both mutants. In striking contrast to these results, the binding of the "pan-kinome" inhibitor staurosporine is strengthened in the mutants. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) shows that the tightened binding of staurosporine arises from increased kon rates, changes not offset by more moderately increased koff rates. The SPR results fit best to a two step binding process for staurosporine in wild type PKA, but not the mutants.

BACKGROUND: In the case of immigrant health and wellness, data are the key limiting factor, where comprehensive national knowledge on immigrant health and health service utilisation is limited. New data and data silos are an inherent response to the increase in technology in the collection and storage of data. The Health Data Cooperative (HDC) model allows members to contribute, store, and manage their health-related information, and members are the rightful data owners and decision-makers to data sharing (e g. research communities, commercial entities, government bodies). OBJECTIVE: This review attempts to scope the literature on HDC and fulfill the following objectives: 1) identify and describe the type of literature that is available on the HDC model; 2) describe the key themes related to HDCs; and 3) describe the benefits and challenges related to the HDC model. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the five-stage framework outlined by Arskey and O'Malley to systematically map literature on HDCs using two search streams: 1) a database and grey literature search; and 2) an internet search. We included all English records that discussed health data cooperative and related key terms. We used a thematic analysis to collate information into comprehensive themes. RESULTS: Through a comprehensive screening process, we found 22 database and grey literature records, and 13 Internet search records. Three major themes that are important to stakeholders include data ownership, data security, and data flow and infrastructure. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study are an informative first step to the study of the HDC model, or an establishment of a HDC in immigrant communities. ABSTRACT

While the use of TiO2 nanoparticles in the form of slurry/suspension requires energy-intensive separation processes, its immobilization in solid support may open new opportunities in the area of sustainable water treatment technologies. In this study, a novel method for the development of photocatalytic paint based on TiO2 nanoparticles and acrylate-based photopolymer resin is reported. The paint (TiO2@polymer) was applied on substrates such as plastic petri dish and glass jar, which was polymerized/solidified by ultraviolet light irradiation. The painted petri dish and glass jar were used for the photocatalytic degradation of model organic pollutants viz. methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), and indole in deionized water, simulated fresh drinking water, and tap water matrices. The photocatalytic degradation studies were performed under sunlight and UV-B light were used for. The sunlight-assisted photocatalytic degradation of MO and MB was found to be faster and more efficient than the UV-B light-assisted ones. Under UV-B light irradiation, it took 120 min to degrade about 80% of 6 ppm MB solution, whereas under sunlight irradiation it took 60 min to degrade about 90% of the same MB solution. The photocatalytic paint generated hydroxyl radical (·OH) under the UV-B and sunlight irradiation, which was studied by the terephthalic acid fluorescence tests. Further, the potential release of TiO2 during the exposure to UV irradiation was studied by single particle ICP-MS analysis.

Satellite remote sensing offers an effective remedy to challenges in ground-based and aerial mapping that have previously impeded quantitative assessments of global seagrass extent. Commercial satellite platforms offer fine spatial resolution, an important consideration in patchy seagrass ecosystems. Currently, no consistent protocol exists for image processing of commercial data, limiting reproducibility and comparison across space and time. Additionally, the radiometric performance of commercial satellite sensors has not been assessed against the dark and variable targets characteristic of coastal waters. This study compared data products derived from two commercial satellites: DigitalGlobe's WorldView-2 and Planet's RapidEye. A single scene from each platform was obtained at St. Joseph Bay in Florida, USA, corresponding to a November 2010 field campaign. A reproducible processing regime was developed to transform imagery from basic products, as delivered from each company, into analysis-ready data usable for various scientific applications. Satellite-derived surface reflectances were compared against field measurements. WorldView-2 imagery exhibited high disagreement in the coastal blue and blue spectral bands, chronically overpredicting. RapidEye exhibited better agreement than WorldView-2, but overpredicted slightly across all spectral bands. A deep convolutional neural network was used to classify imagery into deep water, land, submerged sand, seagrass, and intertidal classes. Classification results were compared to seagrass maps derived from photointerpreted aerial imagery. This study offers the first radiometric assessment of WorldView-2 and RapidEye over a coastal system, revealing inherent calibration issues in shorter wavelengths of WorldView-2. Both platforms demonstrated as much as 97% agreement with aerial estimates, despite differing resolutions. Thus, calibration issues in WorldView-2 did not appear to interfere with classification accuracy, but could be problematic if estimating biomass. The image processing routine developed here offers a reproducible workflow for WorldView-2 and RapidEye imagery, which was tested in two additional coastal systems. This approach may become platform independent as more sensors become available.

Besides unclear burden estimates, another concern is that transplacental transfer of maternal pertussis antibodies could result in attenuation of the immune response to whole cell pertussis (DTwP) primary vaccination series in infants. This study was taken up to determine whether higher levels of maternal pertussis antibodies attenuate immune response of infants to DTwP vaccination series given at 6-10-14 weeks of age. METHODOLOGY: A total of 261 pregnant women and their infants from four low-income settlements in Karachi, Pakistan were enrolled in this study. The study endpoints were infant antibody titers for Pertussis toxin (PTx), Filamentous hemagglutinin antigen (FHA), Pertactin (PRN) and Fimbriae type 2/3 (FIM) - from birth through 18 weeks of age. Cord blood or pre-vaccine pertussis antibody titers indicate the concentration of maternal antibodies transferred to infants. Linear regression models were used to determine the association between higher maternal antibody titers and infant immune response to DTwP vaccine. Geometric Mean Ratio (GMR) was calculated as the ratio of infant antibody titers at specified time points against the maternal antibody titers at the time of delivery. RESULTS: At eighteen weeks of age, the adjusted ß regression coefficient for PTx was 0.06 (95% CI: -0.49-0.61), FHA 0.02 (95% CI: -0.26 -0.29), PRN 0.02 (95%CI -0.38- 0.43), and FIM 0.17 (95%CI: -0.21-0.54). Among infants who received at least two doses of DTwP vaccine, higher maternal antibody titers did not have any attenuating effect on infant post-immunization antibody titers against all four pertussis antigens. CONCLUSION: Maternal pertussis antibodies did not attenuate infant's immune response to pertussis antigens in DTwP primary vaccine given at 6-10-14 weeks of age.

ABSTRACT

A partial-body irradiation model with approximately 2.5% bone marrow sparing (PBI/BM2.5) was established to determine the radiation dose-response relationships for the prolonged and delayed multi-organ effects of acute radiation exposure. Historically, doses reported to the entire body were assumed to be equal to the prescribed dose at some defined calculation point, and the dose-response relationship for multi-organ injury has been defined relative to the prescribed dose being delivered at this point, e.g., to a point at mid-depth at the level of the xiphoid of the non-human primate (NHP). In this retrospective-dose study, the true distribution of dose within the major organs of the NHP was evaluated, and these doses were related to that at the traditional dose-prescription point. Male rhesus macaques were exposed using the PBI/BM2.5 protocol to a prescribed dose of 10 Gy using 6-MV linear accelerator photons at a rate of 0.80 Gy/min. Point and organ doses were calculated for each NHP from computed tomography (CT) scans using heterogeneous density data. The prescribed dose of 10.0 Gy to a point at midline tissue assuming homogeneous media resulted in 10.28 Gy delivered to the prescription point when calculated using the heterogeneous CT volume of the NHP. Respective mean organ doses to the volumes of nine organs, including the heart, lung, bowel and kidney, were computed. With modern treatment planning systems, utilizing a three-dimensional reconstruction of the NHP's CT images to account for the variations in body shape and size, and using density corrections for each of the tissue types, bone, water, muscle and air, accurate determination of the differences in dose to the NHP can be achieved. Dose and volume statistics can be ascertained for any body structure or organ that has been defined using contouring tools in the planning system. Analysis of the dose delivered to critical organs relative to the total-body target dose will permit a more definitive analysis of organ-specific effects and their respective influence in multiple organ injury.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The addition of Global Positioning System (GPS) to a mobile phone makes it a very powerful tool for surveillance and monitoring coverage of health programs. This technology enables transfer of data directly into computer applications and cross-references to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps, which enhances assessment of coverage and trends. OBJECTIVE: Utilization of these systems in low and middle income countries is currently limited, particularly for immunization coverage assessments and polio vaccination campaigns. We piloted the use of this system and discussed its potential to improve the efficiency of field-based health providers and health managers for monitoring of the immunization program. METHODS: Using "30×7" WHO sampling technique, a survey of children less than five years of age was conducted in random clusters of Karachi, Pakistan in three high risk towns where a polio case was detected in 2011. Center point of the cluster was calculated by the application on the mobile. Data and location coordinates were collected through a mobile phone. This data was linked with an automated mHealth based monitoring system for monitoring of Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIAs) in Karachi. After each SIA, a visual report was generated according to the coordinates collected from the survey. RESULT: A total of 3535 participants consented to answer to a baseline survey. We found that the mobile phones incorporated with GIS maps can improve efficiency of health providers through real-time reporting and replacing paper based questionnaire for collection of data at household level. Visual maps generated from the data and geospatial analysis can also give a better assessment of the immunization coverage and polio vaccination campaigns. CONCLUSION: The study supports a model system in resource constrained settings that allows routine capture of individual level data through GPS enabled mobile phone providing actionable information and geospatial maps to local public health managers, policy makers and study staff monitoring immunization coverage.
