ABSTRACT

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a strongly correlated material that exhibits the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) near room temperature, which makes it a promising candidate for applications in nanophotonics or optoelectronics. However, creating VO2 nanostructures with the desired functionality can be challenging due to microscopic inhomogeneities that can significantly impact the local optical and electronic properties. Thin lamellas, produced by focused ion beam milling from a homogeneous layer, provide a useful prototype for studying VO2 at the truly microscopic level using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). High-resolution imaging is used to identify structural inhomogeneities while electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) supported by statistical analysis helps to detect V x O y stoichiometries with a reduced oxidation number of vanadium at the areas of thickness below 70 nm. On the other hand, the thicker areas are dominated by vanadium dioxide, where the signatures of the IMT are detected in both core-loss and low-loss EELS experiments with in situ heating. The experimental results are interpreted with ab initio and semi-classical calculations. This work shows that structural inhomogeneities such as pores and cracks present no harm to the desired optical properties of VO2 samples.

ABSTRACT

Reactive oxygen species play a significant role in male fertility and infertility. They are essential for physiological processes, but when their concentration becomes excessive, they can be a cause of various sperm pathologies. Seminal leukocytes and pathologically abnormal sperm are the primary sources of oxygen radicals in ejaculate. They negatively affect sperm quality, including DNA fragmentation and sperm motility impairment. Addressing increased concentrations of reactive oxygen species involves various appropriate lifestyle modifications and measures, including the use of antioxidants, treatment of urogenital infections, management of varicocele, weight reduction, and others. In many cases, these interventions can lead to adjustments in the condition and improvement in sperm quality. Such improvements can subsequently lead to enhanced outcomes in assisted reproduction or even an increased likelihood of natural conception. In some instances, the need for donor sperm may be eliminated. However, a key factor is adhering to a sufficiently prolonged treatment, which requires patience on the part of both, the physician and the patient.

ABSTRACT

Structural color filters use nano-sized elements to selectively transmit incident light, offering a scalable, economical, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional pigment- and dye-based color filters. However, their structural nature makes their optical response prone to spectral shifts whenever the angle of incidence varies. We address this issue by introducing a conformal VO2 layer onto bare aluminum structural color filters. The insulator-metal transition of VO2 compensated the spectral shift of the filter's transmission at a 15° tilt with 80% efficiency. Unlike solutions that require adjustment of the filter's geometry, this method is versatile and suitable also for existing structural filters. Our findings also establish tunable materials in general as a possible solution for angle-dependent spectral shifts.
