ABSTRACT

Injury to the permanent central incisors due to trauma in the maxillofacial region, though common, may result in an uncommon sequel. We report a case of traumatic injury in a 5-year-old child with displacement of the tooth bud into the nasal floor. The identification of ectopic tooth buds poses little diagnostic challenge due to the available imaging facilities, however, in the present case the ectopic bud remained unnoticed and resulted in ectopic eruption of the tooth in the nasal cavity 1 year later. This report highlights a rare case of nasal eruption of a permanent tooth and places stress on the need for close attention to detail during maxillofacial trauma for early detection and proper management.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Studies of lip prints and palatal rugae, dates back to late 19(th) and early 20(th) centuries and since then, various methods of classification and analysis were introduced, however systematic recording and analysis of data is still need to improve further, to arrive at flawless and meaningful conclusions. Moreover, the awareness among dental personnel regarding the practical knowledge of cheiloscopy and palatoscopy is ambiguous. So, efforts have been made to introduce training module to improve the education of cheiloscopy and palatoscopy for dental students. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: 1. To prepare training module for cheiloscopy and palatoscopy. 2. To assess the efficacy of designed training module. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Training module was used to train the dental students. Random matching of lip and palatal rugae patterns was carried out by dental students before and after training. Pre- and post-training matched results were then compared. Intraobserver variability assessed by comparing first and second assessment of lip print and palatal rugae patterns. RESULTS: It was inferred statistically that training module had improved the ability to identify individuals based on lip prints and palatal rugae, with insignificant intraobserver variation.

ABSTRACT

Ocular defects result from tumor, congenital anomaly and external injury not only lead to serious impairment of function and esthetics but also make the patient psychologically disabled. Prosthetic rehabilitation attempts to restore these disfgurements may improve esthetic, level of function, general psychologic improvement and quality of life. This clinical report details an attempt to rehabilitate a pediatric patient who has undergone orbital enucleation resulting from retinoblastoma with the aid of custom ocular prosthesis using commercially available prefabricated eye shell. ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Auricular swellings significantly affect the facial aesthetics. Swelling affecting the pinna can lead to overt disfigurement and change the entire appeal of the face. Gross deformity can occur because of a delay in diagnosis and mismanagement. In our clinical trial fabrication of a simple, effective innovative pressure appliance for auricular seroma is presented to prevent such changes. METHOD: Our case report comprises of a new clinical trial on a patient with auricular seroma referred from the department of ENT, M.S. Ramaiah medical hospital, Bangalore, Karnataka. A 19-gauge stainless steel wire (Leo wire, Leone, Italy) and chemically cure resin was used to fabricate the pressure appliance to prevent the recurrence of auricular seroma. RESULT: Patient was successfully treated with the help of pressure appliance after 8 weeks of follow up. CONCLUSION: This appliance is a masked alternative to conventional pressure dressing after drainage of auricular seroma which does not pose embarrassment for patient to apply. The use of such an appliance will ensure patient compliance, thereby preventing long term auricular deformity.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Cheiloscopy is the study of lip prints. Lip prints are genotypically determined and are unique, and stable. At the site of crime, lip prints can be either visible or latent. To develop lip prints for study purpose various chemicals such as lysochrome dyes, fluorescent dyes, etc. are available which are very expensive. Vermilion (Sindoor used by married Indian women) and indigo dye (fabric whitener) are readily available, naturally derived, and cost-effective reagents available in India. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of sudan black, vermilion, and indigo in developing visible and latent lip prints made on bone china cup, satin fabric, and cotton fabric. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 45 Volunteers 15 lip prints were made on bone China cup 15 lip prints on Satin fabric and 15 on Cotton fabric. Sudan black, vermilion and indigo were applied on visible and latent lip prints and graded as good (+,+), fair (+), and poor (-) and statistically evaluated. RESULTS: The vermilion and indigo dye gives comparable results to that of sudan black for developing visible and latent lip prints.
