ABSTRACT

This work was carried out to investigate the effect of silymarin combination in the therapeutic plane of schistosomiasis with praziquantel or mirazid to enhance the liver and reduce fibrosis. Mice were divided into 2 main groups, the 1st uninfected group served as control and the 2nd group infected subcutaneously with 60 cercaria of S. mansoni per each. The infected group was subdivided into 5 subgroups, the 1st kept untreated, the 2nd and 3rd treated at the 7th week of infection with (600 mg/kg) of PZQ orally for 3 consecutive days, while the 3rd treated also orally with (150 mg/kg) of silymarin daily for 11 weeks. The 4th and 5th groups treated orally at the 7th week of infection with 600 mg/kg of MZ for 3 consecutive days, while the 5th group treated orally also with 150 mg/kg of silymarin daily for 11weeks. IgG determination showed high level in the untreated infected group. Furthermore, the infected groups treated with PZQ and PZQ with silymarin displayed the lower levels than treated with MZ. Additionally, the untreated infected group showed severe pathological changes as hyaline degeneration, inflammation, presence of worm burdens in dilated portal veins, granulomas as well as depositions of collagenous and reticular fibers indicated intense fibrosis. Treatment with PZQ alone resulted in reduction of pathological signs and decreasing of granulomas. Combination with silymarin to PZQ therapy revealed more improvement for liver besides to lowering of granulomas areas and volumes and decreasing of fibrosis. Whereas, treatment with MZ was less effective than PZQ to reduce granulomas areas, volumes and fibrosis. Although, combination of silymarin to MZ treatment resulted in more curative signs and reduction of granulomas areas, volumes and fibrosis. Furthermore, the present study concluded that PZQ still the more effective drug of schistosomiasis treatment than MZ. The silymarin is very useful in schistosomiasis treatment when combined with PZQ or MZ due to its anti-fibrotic effect.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Faecal incontinence due to constipation associated with myelomeningocele (MMC) is a frustrating problem. It could have a bad impact on patients and their families' quality of life. Conservative measures could be a starting point. In case of failure, Malone antegrade continence enema (MACE) is commonly considered. However, it is associated with higher complications. Peristeen transanal irrigation (TAI) depends on the injection of water into the colon through a rectal catheter with an inflatable balloon to promote a controlled evacuation of large quantities of faecal contents. Transanal irrigation could be an alternative in these patients to avoid surgery. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and satisfaction of TAI management (Peristeen®, Coloplast, Denmark) in children with MMC who failed to respond to conservative measures for stool incontinence. STUDY DESIGN: All patients with MMC who did not respond to conservative measures for stool incontinence and were using TAI with the last follow-up 6 months before the end date were included. Data were collected retrospectively from January 2008 till January 2016. The data collected included the age of starting Peristeen, duration of using the Peristeen, acceptance and compliance of the patient's family with the TAI. Success was defined as stool continence. RESULTS: A total of 109 patients (55 males and 54 females) diagnosed as having MMC were started on TAI Peristeen. With a mean follow-up of 48 months (24-108), 101 patients (90.4%) achieved complete stool continence and 8 patients were considered failures. DISCUSSION: The study results are comparable with those of previously reported publications. The main limitation of Peristeen TAI is that it cannot be performed by the patient himself/herself. This may present a problem with later independence. CONCLUSION: Transanal irrigation with Peristeen® system is a safe and good alternative option for stool incontinence when other conservative measures fail.

ABSTRACT

The prophylactic effects of Chinese propolis against cypermethrin toxicity were evaluated by performing ovary and uterus histopathology, as well as by characterizing ovarian function, embryos, and litters. Cypermethrin induced atypia in the ovary and uterus, and decreased the ovulation sites and the number of embryos. Cypermethrin-induced oxidative stress during pregnancy, decreased the parturition rate as well as the number and weight of offspring and increased the incidence of morphological malformations in the offspring. Administration of propolis to cypermethrin-treated animals mitigated cypermethrin-induced reproductive toxicity.

ABSTRACT

Si-doped GaAs/AlGaAs multi-quantum wells structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) and (311)B GaAs substrates have been studied by using conventional deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and high-resolution Laplace DLTS techniques. One dominant electron-emitting level is observed in the quantum wells structure grown on (100) plane whose activation energy varies from 0.47 to 1.3 eV as junction electric field varies from zero field (edge of the depletion region) to 4.7 × 10(6) V/m. Two defect states with activation energies of 0.24 and 0.80 eV are detected in the structures grown on (311)B plane. The E(c)-0.24 eV trap shows that its capture cross-section is strongly temperature dependent, whilst the other two traps show no such dependence. The value of the capture barrier energy of the trap at E(c)-0.24 eV is 0.39 eV.
