ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that has been entered into the philosophy of education for a long time. Reviewing the concept of aesthetics in education, we can see the components that can cover a number of challenges in the field of patient education. Focusing on the conceptual dimensions obtained from the analysis of this concept, the aim is matching the resulting conceptual categories with the gaps in the field of patient education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a scoping review, we reviewed the literature dealt with different dimensions of aesthetic-based education. Walker and Avant's concept analysis approach was used to inductively analyze the content obtained from the review of literature. The data were divided into three general groups of antecedents, attributes, and consequences of the aesthetic-based education concept, and the final conceptual model was defined. Interdisciplinary comparisons between educational and medical sciences were made to match the concept of aesthetic education with the field of patient education to cover its issues. During the scope review process of the texts, after screening the articles, 17 articles selected to enter the concept analysis stage. RESULT: Concept analysis phase showed that the main conceptual categories of antecedents of aesthetic-based education are aesthetic-based intrapersonal competencies and aesthetic capacities of educational setting. The attributes include aesthetic-based educational content and teaching methods including unity in diversity, combination with art and being based on empathy. The consequences include subliminal learning and constraint-free learning. These conceptual dimensions can cover four important issues in patient education including patient satisfaction, pedagogical competences of health educators, patient centeredness, and empathetic relationship. CONCLUSION: Applying aesthetic concept in the patient education process can bridge part of the gaps in this process. So, this study can be an introduction to future innovative models based on aesthetic paradigm in the field of patient education.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: According to the significance of patient education, new conceptual models are constantly required to promote pedagogical competences of health educators. In the field of educational sciences, aesthetic-based education is known as one of the effective types of curriculum planning which has shown many positive pedagogical outcomes. Thus, the researcher's assumption is that, the concept of "aesthetic education" could be transposed from educational sciences to health sciences in order to develop a new formula in the patient education process. The purpose of this study is to explain methods in detail, to develop an aesthetic-based patient education conceptual model through the concept derivation strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1. Scoping review and inductive data analysis using Walker and Avant's approach to achieve conceptual categories of the concept "aesthetic education." 2. Semi-structured qualitative interviews and directed content analysis to extract the main categories of the concept "aesthetics in the patient education process." 3. Drawing an aesthetic-based patient education conceptual model by allocating new conceptual components to each general step of the patient education process, including needs assessment, goal setting, implementation, and evaluation. 4. Modified Delphi technique to validate the final conceptual model. RESULTS: The first phase will represent the main categories and subcategories of attributes, antecedents, and consequences of "aesthetic education." The second phase will show the main categories and subcategories of attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the new concept named "aesthetic-based patient education." In the third phase, it is expected to achieve a new conceptual model representing the components of aesthetics in the general steps of the patient education process. The fourth phase will propose the final validated conceptual model. CONCLUSIONS: The provided study protocol can be a road map to developing derivative models through concept derivation strategy in health sciences.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Child visual impairment is one of the disabilities that influence the Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) of mothers. Therefore, it is necessary to establish appropriate interventions for enhancing their HRQOL. This study was conducted to assess the efficiency of a Health-Centered Life Skills Training (HCLST) program on the HRQOL of mothers with visually impaired children aged 7 to 12 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a nonblinded, randomized, controlled trial on 52 mothers with visually impaired children studying at an educational complex. The participants were selected using convenience sampling method and were randomly divided into intervention and control groups using balanced block randomization method. The intervention group participated in a HCLST program, but the control group did not. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the 36-item Short Form (SF-36) Health Survey, which were completed by the participants of both groups before, immediately after, and 3 months after the intervention. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in terms of total mean score of HRQOL before the intervention; however, it increased significantly immediately (Z = -5.73, p < 0.001) and 3 months (Z = -5.84, p < 0.001) after the intervention in the intervention group. A statistically significant increase was observed in the mean scores of the two main domains of the HRQOL, which were physical health (Z = -3.61, p < 0.001) and emotional health (Z = -6.19, p < 0.001) domains, only in the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: HCLST program can be used as an effective technique for the improvement of the HRQOL in mothers with blind children.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Religion is considered as one of the factors influencing one's behavior and cognition and plays an important role in shaping the individual's lifestyle. People with religious beliefs, due to less stress, may have less conflict with others. OBJECTIVE: Comparison of adolescents with high and low religious attitudes in terms of conflict with mother. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional, analytic, epidemiological study on girls aged between 15 to 18 years in middle and high schools of Shiraz. The sample size, with a percentage of conflict in a sample of 86 pilots, was 509. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, conflict tactics scale parents (CTSP), and religious attitude questionnaire. RESULTS: There was no significant relationship between religious attitude and individuals' reasoning tactics (P = 0.072), and physical aggression tactics (P = 0.83) of the girls with mother conflict resolution. However, there was a significant relationship between religious attitude and verbal aggression tactics (P = 0.83) of adolescents and mothers (P = 0.04(. There was a significant difference between religious attitudes and total the girls with mother conflict resolution scale (P = 0.003). Relationship between religious attitude and individuals' reasoning tactics in conflict resolution (P = 0.072) and physical aggression tactics (P = 0.83) of self and mother was not seen significant relationship. CONCLUSION: The majority of girls (91.2%) had a moderate religious attitude (48.4%) at low levels of conflict. There was a significant relationship between religious attitude and the total score of There was no significant relationship between religious attitude and individuals' reasoning tactics (P = 0.072) and physical aggression tactics (P = 0.83) of the girls with mother conflict resolution conflict.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vision impairment in children is one of the most severe disabilities that cause stress in parents. Therefore, it seems necessary to establish and conduct interventions for controlling parenting stress and preventing its negative consequences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of life skills training (LST) program on parenting stress of mothers with blind children aged 7 to 12 years. METHODS: This study was a non-blinded randomized controlled trial. 52 mothers with blind children studying at Shoorideh Shirazi educational complex, Shiraz, Iran in 2013 were enrolled, using census sampling method. Balanced block randomization method was used to allocate the participants to groups. The intervention group participated in an LST program consisting of 5 two-hour sessions per week for 5 consecutive weeks but the control group didn't. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and Parenting Stress Index; they were completed three times by the participants of both groups before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. Collected data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent t-test and repeated measures analysis of variances (ANOVA). RESULTS: The LST program could decrease parenting stress in the intervention group mothers (P<0/001). This statistically significant reduction in the mean scores of parenting stress was observed in both children and parents. CONCLUSION: LST program could reduce parenting stress in mothers with blind children. Therefore, it can be used as an efficient, cost-effective and simple technique for managing parenting stress in such parents. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: IRCT201405147531N6.
